Dictionary in iBooks

Hello,
If I touched a word in the book I am reading, comes some options related to that word; one is Dictionary. If I choose it, comes a error message: "Dictionary not available for this language". How come? I am reading a book in English. I would like to have 2 dictionaries — in English and in Portuguese. I would understand if the Portuguese dictionary were not available but I can not believe that even the English one is not available.
In my iPhone 3G apps, appear "Dictionary.com" and "Dicionário Priberam".
They should work as when I am reading on the web on my Mac. I press the shortcut for the dictionary clicking on a word and the meaning of the word appears. What can I do?

If those apps don't work the way they are supposed to, you need to contact the people who made them.
Apple's built in dictionary for iBooks is only English and Japanese.  Is the English book you are reading an epub version?  It should work.  Have you tried other English Books?  Have you tried resetting your device?

I've got to agree with Allan. It sounds like the hard drive is corrupt at least. It's possible it might be physically failing. Without backups, it's possible your data is already gone. You need a professional to help you.
If you do not have an Apple Store near you or simply don't have the time to spare, there are some things you can try, but you must understand that it's possible these things could make the chances of recovering your data worse than they already are. Perform the instructions to follow at your own risk!
First, you can try repairing your hard drive with Disk Utility. If that works, see if you can start up the machine. If you can, the very first thing you need to do is back up any data you don't want to lose. You may still need to take other steps, as your system may be damaged as well, but getting the data is the important part.
If Disk Utility cannot repair the problems, you can try DiskWarrior. It can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. However, it also increases the risk of destroying your data if it fails. If it works and you can start up the machine, do the same as I advised for following success with Disk Utility.
If repairs (with either) were successful, but the machine still won't start up, you can try reinstalling the system. Hold down command-R at startup and then just install right on top of the existing system. If all goes well, you'll be able to start up afterwards and can get your data backed up. If all goes badly, it'll further decrease the chances of getting your data back.
If neither can repair the damage, you're in bad shape. You will need a professional to help you, unless you are willing to lose all your data.

  • Any one having trouble with the dictionary in iBooks after downloading iOS 7?

After downloading iOS7, dictionary in iBooks produces a "no definition found" response after every word i seek a definition for...anyone know how to fix it?

When you elect to look up a definition, you will note a button (lower left of definition pop up) called Manage. Tap that, and select the dictionaries you wish to download.

  • HT5557 Is there a way to install a Portuguese dictionary in iBooks?

Is there a way to install a Portuguese dictionary in iBooks? I understand it only has English, German, Spanish, French, Simplified Chinese.

I don't think that Portuguese is an option yet - as well as the ones that you list I also see (by selecting a word in an ibook, then 'define' on the popup, and then 'manage') Korean, Korean-to-English, Italian, Dutch, Simplified Chinese-to-English, Japanese and Japanese-to-English, as being downloadable but not Portuguese. Assuming that you also don't get an option to download a Portuguese dictionary via that then you could try leaving feedback for Apple : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ibooks_ios.html

  • Transcription definition for ipad built-in dictionary in iBooks

Could you please give me information where i can find Pronunciation Symbols (transcription definition) for ipad built-in dictionary in iBooks?

Take a look at the ios4 upgrade for the iPad coming in November, keyboard and dictionary.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/software-update/
I don't know if this means a separate dictionary for the iPad. If so, I dough third party apps will have access to the dictionary. Third party app developers would probably need to build a dictionary function into their app. Who knows...? We won't untill ios4 comes out.
You can give Apple feedback for the ipad about you idea:

  • Arabic dictionary in ibook

How can I add Arabic dictionary to ibook or any other reading apps?

You can't add anything like that to ibooks or any other Apple app.  For non-Apple apps, you will have to ask the people who make them.

  • Spanish dictionary for ibooks

I use iBooks for Spanish books.  On my iPad I easily associate iBooks with a built-in Spanish dictioinary.  This must exist in my new Mavericks Mac operating system but I cannot see how to load it.  Also, my iBooks are not sychronized between iMac and iPad.  Any ideas?

Thanks, Tom - this is helpful.  However, the selection this app gives me is four English-language dictionaries when I select "All":  New Oxford American Dictionary, Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus, Apple Dictionary and Wikipedia.  I know there are dictionaries in other languages lurking in there somewhere, and they are readily available on iPad.  But where do I find them in Mavericks?

  • English dictionary from iBooks missing since IOS 6 update

After updating IOS 6 the English IBook's dictionary stopped working.
Can anyone tell please how to fix it?

Try to turn off selection to speak option in general prefs / accessibility. That is a workaround only, but works.

  • Dictionary for iBooks on iPad

One disappointment for iPad has been that I am unable to find how the dictionary works, or if there is even a dictionary. On my Kindle, it wa as easy as putting the curser over any unfamiliar word. Is any such similar feature available for iBooks on iPad ?( I purchased The New Oxford american Dictionary on Amazon.com)

    Hi,
Try the help here. iPad iBooks - Dictionary, Search and Bookmark Features
I've had good luck using the instructions at that link. The iPad uses a built in dictionary.
Works on PDF files as well.
