Did a manual backup, but update does one itself?

I'm attempting to update my iPad from iOS 3 to the latest version, so I cleared some extra room on my laptop's HD, did a backup, and copied my paid items to iTunes.
After doing this, I have a little over a gig left on my PC hard drive.
When I start the update, iTunes starts a backup of the iPad.
Is this backup exactly what I've already done, and if so, should I delete the manual backup?

I'm really hesitant to delete the manual backup
IIRC, this changed after iOS 4.x.
(Prior to iOS 4, which is what you have) If you select a manual backup, it creates a new backup.
After iOS 4.x, there is only one backup and they are incremental.
This means that you doing a "manual backup" simply tells iTunes to backup now. It does not create a new. separate backup. Then when you updated, it simply backed up anything changed form the previous backup
If you do a Restore, iTunes will then actually create a new backup.
If you only have 1GB free on your boot drive, you should definitely clear some space. As a general rule, you should always maintain at leas 10%-15% free space on the boot drive so the OS has room to work.
If you go into iTunes prefs > Devices, you can delete old backups. Keep the most current backup.

This device is not eligible for the requested build: Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194." If you receive this alert, update to the latest version of iTunes. Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to perform unauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect.  For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the headingBlocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart. Also, using an older or modified .ipsw file can cause this issue. Try moving the current .ipsw file, or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

  • Time Machine does manual backups but not automatic.

Time Machine skips automatic hourly backups but will do a backup if I click "Backup Now".  Any idea why automatic backups are not working and how to enable them?  Thanks.

  • Hi, i have a new toshiba laptop with windows 7 home edition K and first thing i did was download firefox but it does not open... thank you!

Laptop is L630 and i bought it in Korea, language base is korean/english. I downloaded firefox first but it was US-english, so i uninstalled it and re-installed the uk-english version. Before that I set a persona on firefox 9the only add-on i was in time to set)
When i click on the icons it does not launch...
I tried several tiime to relaunch the PC but so far no change...

I can't think of any way to make the Navigation Toolbar appear/disappear based on which direction you move your mouse.
Well, there is full screen view, where the whole toolbar area including the tab bar slides up off the screen, and reappears if you slide the mouse pointer all the way to the top. (You can use the F11 key to turn full screen view on and off.)
Is it possible this is an option of one of your extensions?

  • I am having trouble updating my iphone software. The instructions take me in an endless loop. Says sync is complete, but update does not occur.

I have updated Itunes, backed-up iphone to itunes, but can't update software. When I click update, it takes me back through the syncing process. I have synced wiht Itunes 5 times now and still no update to my iphone software.

When you connect and it says "backing up iPhone" at the top of the iTunes window, there should be a small "x" to the right of the message that will stop the backup. It will then allow you to progress to syncing and updating the iPhone. Once you're updated, try the backup process again to make sure that everything is ok.

  • I reset my phone since I forgot the passcode and its suppose to prompt me to restore from a backup but never does.

I recently forgot my passcode after changing it, and after I reset it to factory new settings it never prompted me to restore from an icloud backup. I had a backup and its called "Matthews iPod Touch" Even though it was an iPhone backup. Thats the backup I want to use but when I reset it, it never asked me to restore from a backup. I have no idea what to do and why it wont ask me. Please help.

  • After a crash, I reinstalled FF, but it looks different. Bookmarks button will not stay on the screen. Thus, I cannot get to the Library, or Restore. I need to restore Bookmarks from external hard drive. I found backups but how does Firefox find them?

I have found 2 versions of my old bookmarks in my backed up data. One is under Owner/AppData/Local.../bookmarkbackup/bookmarks-2011-10-13 , etc. The other is under Firefox Profile/Cache/E7C5F7B4d01. I don't find these places in the new Firefox program just installed.

Have you tried to drag the folder that contains your music files. Locate the folder, while iTunes is open, drag the folder to the Library icon, this may help.

  • HT204088 I installed iphone 5 from iTunes backup but still have one app showing [ ! ] not installed can not find file . How do I get rid of this pop up

I installed iphone 5 from itunes back up and get a pop up [ ! ] app not installed can not find file. I have looked through everything that have with "CANADA" in the app title. That is the only info there is.

If you haven't found out which app it is then if you go into list view in the Apps part of your library do any of the apps have an exclamantion mark against them ? If they do then they are the one(s) that iTunes can't find the actual app file(s) for - if you delete that app from your library then if it is still in then you should be able to re-download it via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage on your computer's iTunes, or you can just download it directly on your phone via the Purchased tab in its App Store app

  • TS2446 Everytime I type my password in it says my ID is disabled.  I did the email thing but still does the same thing.  What can I do?

I do I get my ID from being disabled so I can buy songs?  I tried the email thing about 5 times.

Have you tried logging out of your account and then logging back in to see if that refreshes your account on it ? On and iPod Touch you can log out by tapping on your id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6), and you should then be able to log back in.
If that doesn't fix it then you might need to contact Apple : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

  • Updated to 5.1.5. and restore my backup, but backup was not available.

I just updated to iOS 5.1.1 on my 3GS phone, previously using 5.0, while plugged into the computer and iTunes 10.6.3.  I had the phone set to backup to iCloud, and ran a sync operation before updating.  Does that not also create a backup?
When the restore process began, it asked if I wanted to set up as a new phone or restore from backup.  However the list of available backups did not have anything from today.  The last one listed was from October 2011.
So I cancelled that operation, went through the new phone setup and then it asked if I wanted to restore from iCloud.  So I chose the most recent iCloud backup which was from around 6 AM this morning.  Now it is in the process of downloading all my apps, pics, and perhaps music as well.  I don't know but it's going to take HOURS to finish this.
Anyway I opened some apps that have already downloaded, and some app data appears to be intact.  But other apps have nothing after October 2011.  And I'm talking apps that have tracked my fitness and workout progress over the past 6 months, bike rides in the past few months, car fuel fillup and maintenance history since October, I'm talking LOTS of data that appears to be gone.
What did I do wrong here?  Did I not do what I should have done regarding backups?  What is the point of backing up to iCloud if it's not going to back up all my app data???

Yeah this was my first time connecting my phone to the computer since I went to iOS 5.0 and iCloud, so I wasn't familiar with the fact that it did not automatically create a backup on iTunes during the Sync process.  Should have right-clicked on the phone device and did a manual backup.
But still, after restoring the backup from iCloud, I don't understand why data from certain apps got hosed (anything before October 2011, which was my last iTunes backup), while other apps' data appears to be fully intact.

  • HT5661 will I be able to restore a new iPad with a BackUp from a old one?

I have an iPad Model MD371LL/A that i'm selling. I will buy a new one as sonn it releases the new model.
Will I be able to restore a new iPad with a BackUp from a old one?

    Yes.
The only 'catch' you may encounter. Let's say your old one is running iOS 7.1.1, and your new one is running iOS 7.0.6, you will first need to update your new one to be running 7.1.1, then y ou can restore it from the backup of your old one and make it a near clone of the old one.
Chances are you won't encounter this, but there have been instances where folks get a broken ipad replaced and try to restore the new one from the backup of the old one and since the replacement is running an older iOS than the replaced one it doesn't work. In that case you set up the replacement long enough to update the iOS then restore it.
But, likely what will happen for you is what happened for me when I bought a new iPod Touch. I did a full backup of my old one then wiped it. Brought the new one home and during hte set up process I had a choice 'set up as new or restore from the backup of the old one'. I chose restore and my new one was a near clone of the old one. I still needed to set up wifi and enter a few passwords to websites, but the data and contents crossed over.
If you are selling your old one you may want to read this about wiping your device to make it usable by the buyer. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5661

  • Recover address book from a manual backup

I recently ran a manual backup (copied everything from the user's home folder, and all sub items) for a client before switching machines (and switching from Tiger to Leopard).
I was told he did not use address book, but it turned out that he did.
So how can I go about restoring the address book from the old backup?
    Thank you.

I have a similar situation - with my old Powerbook, i would manually copy all the files inside my user folder (Users/<username>) to an external HD by dragging the files in Finder from the Powerbook to the external drive. However, i never did these manual backups while being logged in as a "root user" the way this support doc outlines. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553?viewlocale=en_US
Since then, my Powerbook has totally failed and I need to set up a new Macbook Pro using the copy of the <username> folder on the HD. But I'm not sure if I can just copy the files over using Finder? I was running Leopard on the Powerbook, and the Macbook Pro also uses Leopard.
In restoring your Address Book, did you have to be logged in as a root user when doing both the manual backup and the restore? I'm not sure how being logged in (or not) as a root user could affect the whole manual file copying/backup and restoration process.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can't see recent backups when trying manual backup or restore

My iphone crashed the second day I had it (2 weeks ago). I immediately did a restore from the summary page in itunes. I have since had other problems caused by an application. All apps and functions working fine right now, except at this point I see no other backups listed other than the one done on the second day when I look in the backup list accessed by starting the MANUAL restore process. I don't even see any manual backups I have performed. I synch my iphone once or more per day. Because of this (I think) I am losing all app data whenever I have to restore after crashes because I can't choose a more recent backup to restore from. I just did a manual backup and it's not in the list. Help!!!

As Allan stated, there is only one backup kept during normal syncing. The backup created when you restore a device is separate from the one created when the device is synced. The backup created prior to a restore is marked in the syncing preferences of iTunes with the date and time when the backup was created. If you manually initiate a backup, I'm not sure which one that overwrites (it may, in fact, overwrite both).

  • How does one approve comments (RH9 - AirHelp output)?

Okay - I may be a bit thick, but I just don't get this AirHelp thing.
I can see that it creates a stand-alone Help Installer on a client system (like a word CHM).
I see that the client user can create a comment, and this comment is written to an intranet-accessilbe XML file.
I assume other client users on which this particular Help was installed could also comment on the file (writing to the same XML file).
I do not understand the Moderate feature works. I have no idea how the "moderator" approves comments (yes - I see there is password protection for moderation - but where does one enter that password and moderate?).
Do unmoderated comments show up on every user's AirHelp (assuming they Send/Receive comments)?
I am only testing this file locally - so even I've installed two separate Airhelp packages, I'm doing so under my own corporate account - so this may explain some confusion.
Sorry - I just don't see this obviously addressed anywhere. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.
    Thanks for any assistance.
    George

Never mind. Just found it. Talk about a hidden feature (or I may just be thick, as stated earlier).
For any others who were wondering ... In your AirHelp installation package, click on Preferences (lower right), select the Comment tab, and check the Show Moderation Pod option.
I can't see my own comments to moderate - but I assume if they were made using a different log-in account, they would show up for approval.
Am I incredibly stupid - or is this documented anywhere that is easy to find?
