Did I do something to make my Mac Mini not reboot?

Bad bad news for me. It appears I have a broken Mac Mini, very suddenly.
I decided to upgrade RAM, and decided to take it to the store to have them install it for me.
I shut down my Mac Mini at home. I had an external hard drive attached to it at the time. I think I 'ejected' it on the computer. I forgot to actually physically take it out of the USB port. I remember the computer and/or the hard drive 'complained' when the computer shut down but didn't think anything too much about it (made noises).
I take it carefully in a box to the store and give it to them.
Then, even though I had just used it hours ago, they now say it is broken and cannot be robooted. They say their usual process is to boot it up, then intall the Ram, and there is no point in intalling the RAM now since it is broken. They will take a look at it for $45 to see what is wrong with it. Then call me with further repair costs before doing anything.
I didn't use packing material in the box. I don't beleive it moved an inch though. Could the Mac Mini really be that fragile? I didn't drive far to the store. No sudden stops. Careful in carrying it. They insinuate something could have happened to it as I carried it. I can't believe it would be that fragile though. Like I said, I don't think I moved it barely an inch.
Could it be I shut it down improperly somehow, and this has caused it to completely break?
could it be the external hard drive somehow? Maybe if I take it home and try to attach the hard drive, it will be happy?
It just seems so odd that it broke so suddenly.
Should I pay the $45 for them to check it out, or try taking it home and seeing what I can do with it?
ANY help much apprecaited.

It's an odd thing that the system fails to boot and sticks at the grey screen with no external drive attached, yet you haven't (at least knowingly) installed MacOS on the external. It's possible you dragged something over that you shouldn't have, but that should have resulted in the mini, with no external attached, giving some indication of the failure to boot up, such as the flashing question mark.
It's also possible of course that the act or reconnecting the external and booting the system were coincidental, and that there's really no relationship between the two events!
If it were my system, I'd run Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) and see which drive the system is booted from, and use the Verify Disk tool to check for errors on the drive. One thing seems pretty certain however, and that is that even though the system runs fairly slowly, there's nothing much wrong with it in hardware terms, thus aside from new memory, it should not be a major problem to get it running well. Backing up your data to the external and then doing an Erase and Install of MacOS before restoring your data from the backup should be all it takes.
After that, if your external drive is the same size or bigger than the internal, and since you haven't seemed to use it much, you might want to consider using a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper! (I prefer the latter) to do a regular complete backup of your drive, such that if anything goes wrong, not only will you have a backup of your data, but also a full duplicate of the boot drive. That would get you readily back in business is the drive failed or your data was corrupted, and could be automated so you don't have to mess with dragging files yourself.

  • Trouble with Lion upgrade: 2009 Mac Mini not rebooting.

    Hi folks,
I'm having trouble with the Lion upgrade. My 2009 Mac Mini (running Snow Leopard) won't reboot. Everything looked fine, but it just went black after the gray and white Apple symbol screen on the restart and I can't get it to get past this. I should mention I'm using wireless keyboard and trackpad (both Apple) and a Philips HDTV via HDMI cable as monitor. Any thought? Looking forward to using Lion.
    Thanks,
    Chris.

Is anyone else having this problem (an infinite loop of "You need to restart your computer" messages)?
Any thoughts or suggestions? I don't know how I can fix the problem, since I can't properly boot into the OS. I tried holding down the shift button to boot into Safe mode, only to achieve the same results.
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm really looking forward to using Lion.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Just to make certain, you inserted the original installation disk and started the MBP holding down the C key?  Did the Optical drive reject the disk or did it just spin?  If the former, the lens in the drive may be dirty and needs to be cleaned.  If the latter, you will have to take it to an Apple repair facility.

After 10.6.5 update my mac will not reboot. It just spins at the white apple screen. Luckily boot camp works but, all of my important stuff is on the mac side. What can I do? I did not backup(I know that was bad), can I get my old settings and files back? What do I do?

  • Internal HD on mac mini not well... need to boot in Single User Mode

Internal HD on mac mini not well... need to boot in Single User Mode.
I only have a Bluetooth Keyboard and Bluetooth Mouse so when I try to boot in Single User Mode (to do the /sbin/fsck hard drive fix thing) it doesn't see the Bluetooth Keyboard. What's the solution?
I also used SuperDuper to use as a boot drive but it won't unmount my internal HD. arghh..
    Help

I have a corrupt drive and was unable to repair all the errors after booting from OS X installer disk and choosing Disk Utility...
I followed the "boot into single user mode" instructions hoping to complete my repair with fsck, however once I got to the localhost:/ root# prompt, my keyboard seemed to be unrecognized!
I tried 3 different USB keyboards - original Apple USB keyboard, Kensington Mac USB keyboard and an old SGI USB windows keyboard. All were able to enter the apple-S key to get into single user mode but NONE of them were able to type any commands whatsoever.....
I'm thinking my only option is to boot the mini as a target drive off my laptop and try to backup my 30GB of music and photos before wiping the drive...
2nd option might be to try Disk Warrior for $79??
Anyone else have ideas for me?

  • Mac mini not booting up with 8GB memory after 10.7.2 update

My mac mini is not booting up with 8GB of memory after the 10.7.2 update. It just keeps on beeping and flashing the led.
If I take out the upper DIMM (Bank 1) It boots just fine, and it does so with either one of the 4GB DIMMs in Bank 0, so the DIMMs are fine. It also boots up fine with two 1GB DIMMs installed simultaneously, so the Bank 1 seems to be somehow working as well.
This trouble started right after the Lion recovery update, meaning the mini has never booted with the full 8GB installed after the update.
It worked just fine before that, with the full 8GB of memory installed.
    Anyone else having similar problems?

  • Mac Mini not displaying on two screens - was fine, but now it is not!

    Hello,
At my work we have a Mac Mini running Keynote with videos and various slides looping round, displaying on a LG 42" LCD screen in our display window. On the other side of the window - the bit the public does not see - is a monitor to start the presentations and run the computer.
This was working fine, running both screens simultaneously. However recently, it had to be turned off to carry out some work in the display area, and a few days later upon setting it up again its not working with both screens.
The mini boots up and will run fine @ 1024 x 768 60hz on the inside monitor. This is connected to the mini DVI port, with a DVI to VGA adapter. However, when I plug in the LG 42" LCD at the same time (Connected via the mini display port, to an HDMI connector/adapter, the monitor will change to display an "out of range" message, while the LG will display as normal.
I really need both screens running simultaneously as they were before! Nothing has changed in the setup and both screens will run fine by themselves, so I know that they are functioning correctly.
    Any suggestions are much appreciated!
    Any thoughts

It sounds like perhaps the displays got set to mirror mode somehow. This means both displays are trying to display the same thing instead of working independently as you want them to.
Which screen is set to primary, e.g. which one shows the menu bar when both are active? Are you able to get into Displays preferences and make changes? If so, I would check the mirror setting.
Something else that may be worth trying is to start the mini in Safe mode with both displays connected. Hopefully the result will be useable screens on both displays. If so, go into Displays preferences and set the respective displays to the desired setting and restart normally. The selections made under Safe mode should persist through a normal restart.

  • Mac mini not seeing keyboard

I came home yesterday and my Mac Mini 2012 would not wake up. I did a forced shut down then powered it back up. I got the grey screen with login, but could not enter anything from my Logitech K760 bluetooth keyboard. No messages, just no response. The apple Magic Mouse was working so I shut it down and tried again. Still no keyboard.
Additional Mac Mini info: Intel i7, Samsung 840 SSD, 16GB Kingston RAM. Everything has been in place for over a year with no issues. I have time machine on external FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0. It has been 2-4 weeks since any third party software has been added. I do not recall there even being any updates for anything this last week.
    Here is a couple observations:
1a. Mac Mini OFF, keyboard ON
1b. Turn Mac Mini ON, Mac Mini acts as if there is no keyboard, but no messages, no errors.
2a. Mac Mini OFF, Keyboard OFF
2b. Mac Mini ON, Keyboard still OFF; Bluetooth Setup Assistant window opens, "There isn't a keyboard connected" says....Looking....
2c. Turn Keyboard on; push button, Make Discoverable; Computer - Keyboard found - ID's Logitech K760; Setup Assistant window closes.
2d. Still no keyboard input; push any key and Keyboard goes into pairing mode.
Notes: Keyboard will pair and work with other devices. I used it to type this up on my ipad. The bluetooth mouse works. Attached a USB keyboard to my Mac Mini with result of no keyboard input.

  • Apple TV - iTunes Home Sharing - Mac mini - Not Working!!!

Hi everyone, I am in urgent need of help here!
I use the latest Mac mini to hold my iTunes Library to stream it over to my Apple TV with Home Sharing; however, there is a problem - it doesn't work anymore!
If I use my iMac or MacBook Pro, the Home Sharing works great to the Apple TV, without a single problem. For the past week and a half now though, my Mac mini just doesn't want to stream anything over, despite still appearing under the "Computers" column on the home screen of the Apple TV interface.
When I select my Mac mini, I get this seemingly endless loading screen:
    http://goo.gl/s0Qg1
When that loading screen does end though, I get this:
    http://goo.gl/xj3eY
It says "Could not connect to the Mac mini Library - Make sure your computer has iTunes open, and that it's on the same network as Apple TV."
I always verify that my iTunes is open on the Mac mini and that both the Mac mini and Apple TV are on the same network, and still nothing works.
Is there just some kind of issue with streaming the iTunes Library to the Apple TV via Home Sharing that I'm missing? There shouldn't be, but it's a very consistant problem that has come and gone away at random times, but now it seems to be a permanent and upsetting problem.
If anyone can help me on this matter, please send your helpful words because I would like to fix this problem and not deem my Mac mini as a waste of money. I actually bought the Mac mini for the purpose of streaming my iTunes Library, rather than to bog down my iMac with lag and memory being chewed up, because I need it being fast for my work.
    Thank you!

I've got the same problem. Bought a second Apple TV2 a couple of weeks ago and set it up to work with both my iMac and MBP - no problems. Both Apple TV's worked perfectly from both computers until... after a long night at work, the newest one decided to display a message telling me an update was available. Yes, you guessed it! I updated!
Now, although this new Apple Tv displays the libraries from both machines, I get the messages in the original post when I try to access my iMac account - no problem though with my MBP account. Both machines have the up-to-date versions of iTunes. Thank goodness I did not update the older Apple TV2 box!
I echo the sentiments of all the other posts - it is about time Apple pulled their finger out and sorted this mess.
I wonder how many other people have the same problem?

  • Mac Mini not connecting to Wi Fi network - 10.5.5?

My Mac Mini won't connect to my wirelss network - although my iPhone, iMac and laptop are fine. It used to, but suddenly not any more. Is this related to the 10.5.5 update? I'm having a stab at trying to fix the Time Machine "can't get MAC address" bug, and thought I'd switch from wired to wireless to see if it made any difference, but I can't. Anyone any ideas?

It did briefly once, but now Airport just says "scanning" all the time. I'm plugged in via ethernet usually which continues to work fine. My wireless network is also visible and working fine to my 2 iMacs, iPhone and (non Apple) laptop. No error messages, just can't see the wireless network. The network has WEP security. I tried switching it off but that didn't make any difference.
