Did I get a lemon?

I installed an Airport Extreme router purchased new from Apple.com two days ago. The initial installation appeared to go well and it recognized all of my computers (iMac, Vista, Tivo, etc.), the speed was excellent.
The trouble started when I tried to access the web sites for my school's distance ed program. The WebCT software requires that I use RealPlayer 11 to download & view lesson videos; my old router allowed my MacBook to do this just fine. With the AE running I get an error message stating that the socket is not available. I tried programming in the TCP/UDP ports necessary, but still no joy.
Today, I tried logging into Adobe Connect Pro for an online class and encountered poor speeds and the inability to use my USB Logitech headphone/mic with the online software as I had in the past. I tried rebooting (habit from Windows days) and logging back into the web site, but things only got worse.
In frustration I removed the AE router from my network and replaced it with the old D-Link router. All is good again; I can view the videos and was able to login and participate in the online class without a glitch.
Finally, the AE won't recognize the USB hard drive that I connected to it.
Scanning the forums reveals that AEs don't play well with RealPlayer. However, I don't understand why it had problems with Adobe's Connect Pro or why the USB disk won't show up.
I absolutely have to be able to reliably connect to the school's systems for classwork - this level of incompatibility is surprising from Apple. Is there anyway to fix this or should I just send it back?

It's fixed. A little user error involved here, at least WRT the drive issue:
1. The disk drive wasn't visible from the router because it was not formatted properly. To be visible, disks attached to the AEBS must be in a Mac OS format.
2. The RealPlayer streaming download issue was corrected by going into the preferences menu in RP 11 and selecting the "Transport" settings, checking "Use manually configured RTSP and PNA transport settings, then "configure", and finally un-checking all but the HTTP RTSP & PNA settings. Once that was done RealPlayer worked just fine.
My thanks to Apple Tech Support, specifically Daniel, for running the Real Player issue to ground. It wasn't an obvious fix and since it worked with my old router, I assumed it was the new router that was somehow blocking access to RP. (Could come up with a few conspiracy theories here if I had my tin foil hat on.) But it turned out to be a RP issue.
Now I'm up and running with my network, happy as can be.

    Time machine backup and restore from an external HDD. Or, use Archive and Install with Preserve Users and Network Settings.
    Sorry for your troubles - my 1st gen MBP has worked flawlessly for over three years now, the only problem being a bad battery (Sony's fault), which Apple replaced for free several months after my warranty expired.

    Try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.
    There's more to try but let's go a bit at a time.

    1. iTunes won't offer cloud downloads for songs that it "thinks" are in your library, even if it "knows" the files are missing. If you've exhaustively searched for the missing files and there is no prospect of repair by restoring to them to their original locations, or connecting to new ones, then delete that tracks that display both the missing exclamation mark and are of media kind Purchased/Protected AAC audio file. Don't hide from iTunes in the cloud when asked, close iTunes, then reopen. You can download from the cloud links or iTunes Store > Quicklinks > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer > All songs > Download all.
    2. Why? Not sure, perhaps 3rd party tools or accidental key presses combined with previously hidden warning messages when trying to organize the library. There is a hint that using the feature to downsample media as it is synced to a device may also be involved, though I've not replicated it. Whatever the reason a backup would protect your media.

    (The x64 would most likely mean 64 bit). It may be a Windows based application/plugin, but since I had never heard of either, I'm only guessing there. If you do a search systemwide for it and don't find it plus don't know why it's there, I'd say throw it in the trash (don't empty it yet - make a note of the file path just in case you do have something installed that needs it so you can move it back).
    Glad to hear it's not a torrent; some people use those not realizing that quite often there is a price to pay for downloading stuff for free that costs money elsewhere - the software packages quite often include little "add-ons" = malware which you really don't want.

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
    It sounds like you have photos in your Photo Stream that you would like to download. The photos are not actually stored on your Apple TV, it sounds like they are being displayed from your Photo Stream. Please read over the attached article for information on your Photo Stream and how to download these photos.

    Because your Mac and PC have more storage than your iOS devices, you can choose to download all of your My Photo Stream photos automatically.
    In iPhoto or Aperture preferences on your Mac, select Photos (or Photo Stream) > My Photo Stream > Automatic Import. All of your photo stream photos will import into your Events, Projects, Photos, Faces, and Places folders in iPhoto or Aperture.
    On your PC with My Photo Stream on in the Control Panel, all of your photos will import intoC:\\Users\<user name>\Pictures\iCloud Photos\My Photo Stream

    These are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple here.
    If it was an audiobook then they are one-time only downloads, to get it on your other devices you need to sync it to them and not re-download it oneach. You can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will refund or credit you for the second and third downloads : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

Some people like my self have reported that they can not get the Update as there phone is getting an inability to connect to the network error, or the update window simply disappears with out a response (This is what is happening to me).
    Many have reported that they got the update it fixed the reboot bug, and that they are seeing improvement in the phones functionality in general. Some people have reported that they have heard that the update is causing more problems. What I have yet to see (And I might have simply missed them) is reports from users that this has actually happened to them. So I started this Thread to see if we can't get a straight answer from the people that are actually using the phone (Because it seems VZW and HTC don't' seem to know or want to tell us right now) 
    So hear is what Im asking 
    1) Did you get the Update

  • Where did I get System 10.2.8?

    This has me completely baffled. I have two CRT iMacs, a Dalmation, and another much older machine. both are running system 10.2.8. Where the heck did I get that system? I need to completely erase and reload the HD in the Dalmation. It was horribly abused by college kids and is so jammed up with crap, conflicts, and ickyness that I just want to start fresh. There is nothing in it to save. But..I don't seem to have a system around to install! Every version of system 10 point anything that I have is on a DVD, and this machine does not have a DVD drive. Have I lost a system someplace? Or did I have 9.2.2 in it, and go thru upgrades to get it to 10.2.8? I'm completely baffled. That's just like my other even older imac with only a CD drive...how the heck did I get 10.2.8 into it? Was 10.2.8 once available to buy, or bundled with this machine? Can I copy a system 10 DVD install disc to an external HD, plug it in, and install from there? I have plenty of varying system 10 versions laying around..all legal paid for systems..saved from computers I've long since killed and retired, but how the heck can I install one?

    Yes you could buy OS 10.2 at one time. Once you install OS 10.2 you can download the updates to get to OS 10.2.8.

    Your entire second paragraph is so confusing I am going to ignore it.
    But I may be able to answer your first and third paragraphs, which seem to address the same question.
    I wonder where your iPhone states it was backed up yesterday.  I am going to assume that you see this under Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
    If that is true, then the backup from yesterday is in iCloud.  The one and only way to restore an iCloud backup is to do this on your iPhone:
    Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
    That will cause your iPhone to begin a setup process.  As part of that process, assuming you enter the same Apple ID you used when you created the iCloud backup, you will be offered the opportunity to restore from it.
