Did I just ruin my Battery?

So I just did the initial conditioning for my battery. I let it charge, kept it fully charged for about 3 hours and then let it drain . . . . .here is my problem, I left my usb cooling pad plugged in. When it went to sleep the pad kept going and drained it to 0!! It was at empty for several hours. Now fully charged I am only showing about 3:45 on the battery clock. I don't recall my last Macbooks numbers exactly, but in this situation (wifi on, word on and safari) I could have sworn it was more like 4:45.
Can you totally ruin a battery beyond repair by letting it go to zero on the first charge and then leaving it that way for a few hours?
Kalel

Kalel, these batteries take a few days to settle down, so don't take too much notice of the indicated charge life for a while. Its likely that the 4 hours+ time you first saw was inaccurate itself, too. These things change so much depending on what you are doing with the computer that they can never be accurately relaied.
With these batteries the "ruining by running dead flat" thing is an all or nothing situation. They contain circuitry that is designed to prevent a defective battery from doing damage to your charging system etc. This prevents charging altogether. The fact that your battery is still chargable indicates that this circuitary did not get tripped. Your battery will be fine.
Don't unnecessarily run the battery down more than you would in normal use. Lithium batteries have a finite number of charge cycles. There is no need to calibrate them al that often once you have done it once. Every couple of months thereafter is more than enough.
Don't worry. Enjoy your MacBook.
Cheers

  • Would this ruin my battery if I did this ?

I'm getting my new mac this monday .. Well would it ruin my battery if I just turned it on without charging it when I open the box and everything ? Then charged it ?

Using it right out of the box is not... even remotely... harmful to your battery. There is no difference using the partially charged battery that is supplied and using your computer a year from now with a partially charged battery.
The reason for the initial calibration is to make sure your computer and battery are in "sync" so to speak. As you know, notebooks will tell you the percentage of charge and how much time you have remaining when you are running on battery. In order to calculate this properly, the computer needs to know the state of the battery at a full charge down to a complete discharge. With that info, it can accurately provide you with the time remaining while using it on battery.
You can certainly use it when you first get it. It is preferred to allow it to fully charge first so you can get an accurate reading. As ypw indicated, just use it while it is plugged in so that initial full charge can happen. After that just follow the rest of the calibration instructions (which basically involve using the machine on battery until it is fully discharged... but again... follow the instructions).
So... zero harm to your battery if you don't charge it first... but you may not get accurate charge level readings until you do the initial calibration. Also... when the battery isn't calibrated, the computer may "think" it has more time than it actually does. Normally, your computer will go to "sleep" when the battery reaches a certain low level. If your computer thinks it has say 30% power left... but it really only has maybe 2%... it could shut off (due to running out of power) instead of sleeping.
This is why it's recommended to calibrate your battery the first time you use it. It is not because you will damage your battery.

  • Will charging my iPhone 4S with iPad 4th generation 12w power adapter, ruin my battery?

Situation: my iPhone 4S is 4 months old, have had ZERO issues with battery life, until yesterday...
I just bought the newest iPad last week (retina display) and yesterday I plugged the iPhone 4s usb cable into the iPad 12w power adapter, to charge my 4s. Now my iPhone 4S is losing 1% every 4-5 minutes (not exaggerating, in fact it may be draining even faster than that). This is occurring even though all programs are closed and the phone is locked (screen is black)... Normally my battery will lose 5-10% while I sleep, last night it was dead within 5 hours !
I'm pretty disappointed becuz it seems I have ruined the battery. Can anyone think of any other reason for this to be happening?
In an attempt to rule out any software issues or potential malware, I backed up my 4s, put it in recovery mode and proceeded with a factory restore. Following that I restored from backup. To my dismay the freefall battery drainage is continuing :(
What are my options (if any) apart from heading over to apple store tomorrow to get bent over a barrel? Any help would be appreciated ....
Many thanks and happy holidays !

Okay it's been 15 minutes and battery is still at 100%.
I have ton of apps and music as well as photos etc... I'm using 58Gb. So getting my stuff back on is a top priority. The only thing I did on the 24th (day the problem started) that I can think of, was register with talkatone (googles VoIP App). I'm thinking I delete that App from iTunes before restoring from backup?
    Your help is much appreciated!

  • Did OS update ruin my iPod Touch?

Since updating the OS on his iPodTouch last night, the iPod is no longer recognized by any computer and only shows the screen showing it needs to be plugged into iTunes. I did that but iTunes and my PC never recognized that the iPod was plugged in. Did the update ruin my iPod???? Does Apple repair/replace in these instances?

    Hello,
I`m sorry to hear that your Ipod has been wrecked and needs to be plugged into Itunes. I will try my best to help with your problem!
    Try the following things:
-Hold down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 sec. or until Apple Logo appears
-Did you try connecting it to a different computer? Maybe the computer doesnt recognize it, but maybe another computer might?
-Restart the computer. Sometimes this happens to me, it says plug it into Itunes, and then I do, but it pops up an error message. I just restart the computer, then it works again.
    Hope that helps!
If the above things do not work, can you please respond back ASAP as I will try to find another solution.
    Thanks,
    Pizza98704
P.S. I updated my Ipod Touch, 4th generation to IOS 6.0.1 on Wednesday January 30th,2013.
No problems have happened yet, since the update.

  • If I have my iphone 6 on oovoo or any other app on the whole night while the charger is plug in, will that ruin the battery?

If I have my iphone 6 on oovoo or any other app on the whole night while the charger is plug in, will that ruin the battery?

No. The phones are smart enough to stop charging once they are full. Most people plug in their phones overnight, and just unplug it in the morning and you are good to go. I hope this helps!

  • If i keep my computer plugged in all day will that ruin the battery???

if i keep my computer plugged in all day will that ruin the battery???

Absolutely yes, it will ruin it.
*However if you don’t plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise) ..*You don’t want your Macbook both always plugged in AND in sleep mode       (When portable devices are charging and in the on or sleep position, the current that is drawn through the device is called the parasitic load and will alter the dynamics of charge cycle. Battery manufacturers advise against parasitic loading because it induces mini-cycles.)
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time."
Keeping batteries connected to a charger ensures that periodic "top-ups" do very minor but continuous damage to individual cells, hence Apples recommendation above:   “Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time”, …this is because “Li-ion degrades fastest at high state-of-charge”.
This is also the same reason new Apple notebooks are packaged with 50% charges and not 100%.
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles down on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery, but not plugged in all the time. When not being used for several hours, turn it off.
General rule to remember of Lithium batteries is:
Never drain them LOW  & dont always/often store them HIGH
While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
*A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 50-60% remaining of a 100% charge has better battery usage and care than another person who has 300 charge cycles at say 15% remaining on a 100% charge.
DoD (depth of discharge) is far more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count.  *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific.    As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
(as a very rough analogy would be 20,000 hard miles put on a car vs. 80,000 good miles being something similar)
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot overcharge it when plugged in and already fully charged
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your Macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium cells the "80% Rule" ...meaning use 80% of the charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook go into shutdown and safe mode from loss of power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to Lithium cells are instances when often the cells are repeatedly drained very low…. key word being "often"
Contrary to what some might say, Lithium batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity. Same way you don’t take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
Proper treatment is still important. Just because LiPo batteries don’t need conditioning in general, does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesn’t need conditioning.
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
    Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
    Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance.  Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
    Peace

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • My iPod touch isn't connected or did I just did something wrong on it?

I got my iPod touch yesterday and when I used it for the first time it worked.but when I want to use it the second time my iPod is charging but it has not the sign on it that it is connected to the computer!
I tryed everything I but iTunes back out of my computer and I installed it again but right know I have iTunes without music.Or did I just changed the settings on my iPod?but I looked and it is just fine

It did pay for it if your Apple ID has a credit card on it.

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago. What else can I try before just trying to initialize and

Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

    Hey joshuafromisr,
If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:

"just" get crappier is a bit of an outdated statement - MX
2004 is flash version 7 and the currect
version is Flash 8 - MX 2004 came out well over a year ago.
You don't and never have had to "mask" out the work area - I
have no idea what you are referring to
    - can you explain in detail what is or is not happening?
Yes they removed normal mode from the AS panel but brought it
back in flash 8 as "Script Assist"
    which is even better.
You refer to "Macromedia" which is no longer (again, dating

Export PDF converts filled PDF form without the data - Turns filled PDF form onto blank Word doc. Is there a solution to this or did Adobe just sell me a service that doesn't work?

ExportPDF is not for forms. In general, converting forms to Word is a really, really bad idea which can even cause legal problems. Work with the form as a PDF. Acrobat (not Reader) can export form data as simple text for example.

Have you deleted anything from your iTunes library ? Have you checked to see if they are still on your computer, but not listed in your iTunes library ?
If not then do they show in the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage for redownloading ? If they don't show there and others do and they are still in your country's store, then check to see if they are hidden : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919
If they are no longer in your store for redownloading (or you aren't in a country where music videos can be redownloaded) then you will need to copy them back from your backup of your library/downloads.
