Did I make a mistake in coming to BT?

Hi there
Transferred from O2 broadband where i was on their 24mb contract (getting 8.5mb). I moved because BT are rolling out their Infinity (which at the time was advertised End of Sept, but now God only Knows). I've now been with BT for 3 months.
I waited patiently during the "Training" period for my speed to stabilise, and when it did, it stabilised at about 4mb (which is obviously less than half of the O2 speed. I was not happy so i contacted support and went through the troubleshooting (plug into master, disconnect any extensions, change filter, reboot router etc etc.) and it went up to about 5.5 mb, or so i thought. when i checked the speed the next day...it had dropped back down. I then noticed that everytime I unplugged /replugged the ADSL line, i would get a good rate for about 1/2 an hour nad then it would drop again.
Last week i noticed that my speed had dropped significantly, and when i ran the various speedtests (speedtest.net / speedtester.bt.com) I was getting about 2.5 mb. I rang support went through the standard troubleshoot motions, passed to 2nd level, recieved a callback 10 mins later...then another one 4 hours later and it was still causing issue, that they booked an engineer.
The engineer came round yesterday (Sat) and checked all my wiring, and the master socket. he swapped out the Home Hub ("Just in Case") and after he did everything i was getting 6.8 mb (which i was happy with, given the low speeds i'd been getting previously). The engineer left and closed the job down. later on saturday night, when i checked the line, it had dropped back down to 3.5 mb.
I've woken up this morning to a really bad connection. ive rebooted a few times and unplugged / replugged in the ADSL line, but nothings improved. I rang the helpline again and i'm waiting for a call back.
my home hub manager connection screen shows:

96kbps???!?!??!?! OMG!! i've tested most of the day and its always been around this  (tell a lie, i got 22kbps earlier).
My line is connected DIRECTLY into the master socket (faceplate has been taken off) and i have no extensions. I've changed the filter and checked my phone line for quality and it seems ok. I have disconnected anything else on my LAN including printers and NAS.
Any Ideas....am at my wits end as i work from home a lot and my management team must think i'm taking the pi55 with not being online at all!!
Thanks

Ok
Working from the office today, so remoted in (thanks TeamViewer!)  ran the test, exited the remote session (as to not skew the results) and then logged back in to get my results:

Looks as if some things are happening on the line which is good, and my download speed is now 1.3kbps but still a long way off from where i want to be (i'd be haappy around the 6mb rate)

    I just add the 34970A Initialize.vi and 34970A Close.vi together with 34970A switch.vi. I tried the experiment again and again. I still can not open/close the 34903A switches indepedently on slot2. Please see the attached vi. Did I make any mistakes?

    You're calling initialize every time. If you look inside this VI, you'll see that if you don't choose reset, the command SYSTRES is issued which will preset the instrument to a known configuration. You do not want to call initialize every time. It is enough to call it at the very beginning of your program and then just call HP34970A Switch.vi by itself whenever you want to open and close a relay.

  • I bought a Panasonic SD-90 for its 1080/60p feature, did I make a mistake?

    I bought a Panasonic SD-90 for its1080/60p features hoping to have the best quality possible for iMovie and eventually Final Cut Pro.
    Did I make a mistake?
    I found out that iMovie cannot import natively mts files in 1080/60p.  Is there another format or Camcoder that can?
    Are there some Camcoders that offer 1080/60p quality that are more compatible with iMovie?
    I hear Canons are more compatible with Mac. Is that true?  If so, in what way would they be more compatible?  They use .MOV instead of .MTS?
    Thanks for your help
    Andre

    You cannot import 60P into iMovie without a bit of fiddling. If you have a comfort level in editing hexadecimal files, this may work for you.
    Otherwise, your Panasonic probably has different shooting modes. The best for iMovie would be 30P or 60i.

  • Did I make a mistake upgrading to ML?  Count the costs!

    Talk about your string of circumstances.  All I really needed was to eliminate hum from the soundtrack of an oral-history video recording.  The simplest solution seemed to be to update iMovie.  I was using '09, which has virtually no capability to edit audio.
    Well, when I tried to download iMovie '11 I learned that it would not work with Snow Leopard.  Since I'd been considering upgrading for some time (but NOT read any fine print), I back-tracked and downloaded Mountain Lion.  Then I downloaded and installed iMovie '11.
    THEN, I noticed thosse funny marks in my dock.  When I tried these icons I got the dreaded message "You can't open the application [AppName] because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
    Apps effected: Adobe CS2; Adobe Bridge; Microsoft Office (2004); Epson Scan.
    This was brand-new news to me.  I have tried to find out what if anything I can do about the loss of these apps (everyone of them legally-purchased items), and apparently I'm just without alternatives.  Current version of CS6, about $600.  Cheapest MS Office, $80.  This is a BAD TRADE for a $20 OS upgrade!
    And Epson Scan?  There's one for the books.  Epson sends me to the Apple Store, saying that is the only place to get an upgrade.  Apple Store sees no problems, and informs me that there are no upgrades available or needed.  System Preferences/Print & Scan sees the scanner, so that's not the problem.
    About the internal optical drive:  Before the OSX upgrade, the drive was working nominally.  I know, because I burned a number of disks within the last week or two.  Now?  The drive appears to recognize music CDs, but it WILL NOT recognize blank disk media.  I have tried both Toast Titanium 7 (most recent) and since that wouldn't work I tried OSX's native disk burning function.  In neither case will the drive admit that it has a blank disk inserted.  I just ruminates for 15-20 seconds and spits the disk out.
    I also have an older Plextor external optical drive.  But Apple Support itself gives completely mixed counsel regarding whether or not Mountain Lion can be used with an external optical drive.  One place says it will work; another place tells you to use a networked computer's optical drive (!); many other places say an external drive won't work at all.  Hey Apple, make up your mind!
    Now, I'm sure somewhere in fine legal print they informed me that PowerPC apps would no longer work with ML.  But that information was well-hidden, and did not surface in any professional reviews I read.  So these behaviors were a complete surprise to me, and not the pleasant sort.
    Needless to say, I'm left feeling really ill-used by Apple.  Sure, I've got an up-to-date operating system, but now I'm left counting the costs.  And so should you.  The technically-oriented in this community will perhaps sneer at my naivete.  But you need to recognize that not all Apple clients are technically up to your standards.  Give us a break!!  [I myself have been using PCs intensively since the second-generation IBM PC in the late 1970's.]
    I'm ticked.  In case it's not obvious.  And feeling let down by Apple.  And I've been a cheer-leader for them for many years.

    I feel your pain!  This happened to me with I replaced my dead iMac G5 with a new Mac Mini in August, 2011 and did not do my usual due diligence on Lion!
    Try Apple's Image Capture application, provided for free in the Applications folder with your Epson.  I use it all the time for my Epson Artisan 810.
    Toast 7 is way too old; I think they are up to 11 or 12 now.  But you should be able to burn discs from the Finder in any event.
    Which iMac do you have; check the Model Identifier in About this Mac, More Info, System Report.
    Since my Mac Mini has no optical drive, I use one that I purchased for $39 from Fry's some years ago to get the ability to burn DL DVDs and it seems to run fine in Lion with Toast 10.
    Here is a "canned" answer I give for many in your situation.  Study all of this and respond with more information so we can guide you to your solution:
    Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
    However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open your data files, modify them and save them;
    4.  Install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion for concurrent use of your PowerPC applications with Lion or Mt. Lion:
                                  [click on image to enlarge]
    Apple has now restarted to sell Snow Leopard Server at a 95% discount over its original price: only $19.99 + sales tax & shipping; telephone orders only, call 800-MYAPPLE (800-692-7753) -  Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A
    NOTE:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics may not work well or at all in virtualization.
    I am surprised that the professional reviews did not mention the lack of Rosetta in Mountain Lion.
    When one similarly frustrated poster here on this forum expressed his sentiment that Apple should have posted a big red flag about Mountain Lion not having Rosetta, I pulled out my PowerPC version of Photoshop and created the image above!

  • Did I make major mistake buying this product? Tungsten E2

    Somebody...anybody...if you feel you want to make a difference in somebody's life, and are not sure where to start, please start here and help this poor sucker out with any information you might have.
    I recently purchased a Palm Tungsten E2 ("TE2"), and it was a bit of an impulse buy which I didn't think through fully.  I blew almost $300 on the thing at BestBuy (not counting the softward upgrade I had to buy so I could convert PDFs and view them on the device), which my wife is already on my case about.
    It looks like I made the wrong purchase altogether, but maybe someone can help me understand how to overcome the apparent shortcomings, or understand the advantages of the device a little better (so I can feel better about the purchase, and try and convince my wife I'm not a total idiot-- although that ship has sailed really.  Can't blame Palm for that).  Solving some of these problems could well preserve my marriage and really improve the overall quality of life of the family.
    1. The TE2 doesn't appear to be able to be recognized as a simple USB storage device on a Windows PC (which is what I use at work). So I can't move any info back and forth without loading up the PalmOne software (let alone opening and reading office files or PDF's).  At work, they won't allow me to load that software, because they're afraid I could accidentally introduce a virus or compromise confidential customer data stored on the network.  So I can't do away with my flash drive-- I still need to keep it with me and copy anything to it that I want to take home, convert and load up to the PDA there.
    2. The TE2 doesn't appear to have the capability of storing MP3 files without the purchase of an additional SD card (whatever that is...some kind of memory card? can you tell I'm illiterate? And did I tell you I've already spent plenty of dough?). I really love music, and I would love to be able to just play MP3's from the thing without spending another hard-earned cent.
    3. The TE2 can't connect to the internet wirelessly (or by wire, to my knowledge), unless you count blue tooth connection to a compatible cellular phone or PC or laptop with blue-tooth adapter (within 10 or 15 feet of where you're standing).  If I'm within fifteen feet of such a device, why not just log onto that device and browse that way?  Why bother trying to figure out if it's compatible/blue-tooth capable?  And if I'm within 15 feet of my home PC, I might as well just plug in via USB port to "hot-sync", instead of blue tooth.  I mean, I'm right there anyway, so what's the point?  So I can't just pull out my TE2 and check the weather, or movie showtimes, or mapquest.
    4. To make efficient use of my contacts on the TE2, I would need a telephone with blue tooth feature, which I don't currently have.  (Same for web surfing.)  So that's more expense, and even then I'm working with 2 devices.  (Although I'm told it can be frustrating to do things on a blackberry while you're in a telephone conversation.  So writing down honey-do lists would still be easier on the TE2.)
    5. In order to share/"beam" any files to my wife's handheld (when she purchases one-- she hasn't yet), she would have to have a compatible one, I think.  But so far she's not impressed, so I wonder if she'll even buy a Palm product.
    6. In a real life writing situation, when I'm not staring at the device and concentrating on every stroke of the stylus, I get about a 50% success rate, as far as the device recognizing the letters I print (very frustrating).  I'm trying to go paperless and ramp up my personal efficiency, but my wife is rolling her eyes and I'm starting to stress her out.  By the time I get her to-do-list down (and it's usually sizeable), she has forgotten the rest of what she wanted to put on the list.  You may think that works to my benefit, but not so-- not in the long run. There does not appear to be a way to 'train' the device to recognize the way I draw an 'r' when I'm in a hurry.  It just let's you pick one or two pre-set variations on how to write a handful of letters or symbols.
    7. By the time I get a PDF loaded to the PalmOne software at home, or god-help-me if I've scanned a document on my HP (a 15 minute process in itself, minimum for one page even) and then 'hot-sync'd', I've waited about as long as I can bare to wait.  But the converted pdf pages take over 15 seconds to load just to view, even if already on the TE2.  (Like if I'm on page one, finish, and go to page 2, that transition takes over 15 seconds).  In this day and age, 15 seconds to load a single page is actually a long time.  There is no high-speed toggling back and forth, so you better really be done with that page. It'll take you another 15 seconds if you change your mind.  I never realized how awkward 15 minutes of waiting can be, when you're trying to justify a purchase.
    8. Ideally I can work on converted excel and word files on the TE2, but then I can't just walk into work and transfer that to my PC, unless I have the PalmOne software loaded at work-- which as I stated was a no-no.
    9.  The entire owner's manual should just automatically come as an e-book loaded on the device, but it doesn't. I have to get to a PC and go surfing in order to read up on how to do anything on this device, and it's really cumbersome (because I have a lot of kids, and there's just no time to do anything...).
    10.  I bought the geek-squad protection from BestBuy, and out of the gate they appear to have given me bad info.
    Anyway, anyone care to field some of these concerns, and help get me on track to increased productivity and happier marriage with some helpful hints?  Anything to avoid more hardship and heartbreak would also be good.  Oh, and sorry I sounded whiny...
    Thanks!

    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

    I blew almost $300 on the thing at BestBuy (not counting the softward upgrade I had to buy so I could convert PDFs and view them on the device), which my wife is already on my case about.
    ...maybe someone can help me understand how to overcome the apparent shortcomings, or understand the advantages of the device a little better (so I can feel better about the purchase, and try and convince my wife I'm not a total idiot-- although that ship has sailed really...).
    That sounds pretty harsh, unless you have been doing *other* things to antagonize your Spousal Unit.  You are among friends here, where purchasing a Palm handheld is presumptive evidence of one's intelligence and good judgment (not to mention good looks).  Even "impulse purchases" are usually made for at least one good reason, even if it's only: "I've always wanted one of those..."
    Curious what they added to the $199 E2 to make it come out to $300?  And what software did you purchase to view PDFs?  The E2 comes with Adobe Reader for Palm (more below).  If you are referring to upgraded Documents To Go, PDF files require no conversion for viewing on the handheld.
    That is correct, you cannot simply plug the E2 into any old computer with a USB cable if the Palm Desktop software isn't installed, at least out of the box.  The older (and discontinued) T5 and also the LifeDrive used to have this capability which was called "Drive Mode."  There are third-party software alternatives such as http://www.softick.com/cardexport2/ which will let a SD card inserted in your E2 to be read as any other external storage card.  It is a "try before you buy" application, so you can give it a test drive for free.  I have not used it, and I think there are also others.
    That is also correct...you will need a SD card to load .mp3 files for playback.  They are ridiculously inexpensive these days, compared with what they used to cost, at least. For your E2, you need a 1GB maximum size, regular, plain-jane SD card, not a SDHC (high capacity) card.  Shouldn't cost more than $15.
    If you do have a Bluetooth phone, and a carrier that allows this connectivity, you can use your E2 anywhere you have a cell phone signal to browse the internet and check email.  Now, you are correct that if your phone is already so enabled, you *can* just do those things on your phone without having to go through the setup, etc.  But many people think the email and web functionality of the E2 is pretty superior to what you get on most cell phones.  If it's Wi-Fi you want, you can get a Palm Wi-Fi card.  It is apparently a discontinued item, but still available at many online vendors including amazon.
    All depends on what you need to be able to do.  I have a Centro smartphone now, but I also have a couple of TX handhelds (two being better than one  ) , and if one of them is handy I use the Contacts database all the time to look up people and places.  Depending on the phone, you might also be able to sync contacts between your phone and E2 using Bluetooth.
    5. In order to share/"beam" any files to my wife's handheld (when she purchases one-- she hasn't yet), she would have to have a compatible one, I think.  But so far she's not impressed, so I wonder if she'll even buy a Palm product.
    Tough call, trying to impress the unimpressed (or unimpressable) Spousal Unit.  I've been there for years, and long ago stopped trying.  I do like to show her up every now and then when I can search for movie information on my Palms with Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide much, much faster than she can with that 4" thick book.  That said, any Palm handheld, even an old used one, will be able to share contact and calendar info with your new E2 via IR beaming.  There is also a third-party application called SyncUs which lets multiple users with separate Hotsync IDs synchronize selected databases using the desktop Hotsync...perfect for families who need to share contact or calendar info.
    Graffiti is something that you can get pretty good at over time.  Are you using a screen protector?  Some of them can either make Graffiti stroke recognition better or worse.  The ones I like the best are the hard plastic "ClearTouch" ones from Boxwave.  There are also a few "word completion" applications out there which will pop up suggested words when you start entering characters.  On my Centro I use TextPlus which I think will also work for graffiti-input.
    Some people swear by the "virtual" on-screen keyboard in lieu of graffiti data entry.  In addition to the built-in one, there are third-party virtual keyboards which are configurable.  I tried one and didn't particularly care for it.
    A wireless keyboard is also an excellent option for longer data-entering chores like editing documents or longer memos.  Either the Palm Universal Wireless Keyboard (uses the IR port) or the Palm Bluetooth Keyboard would work well for you.
    But the rolling of the eyes thing is a sign of disrespect, which is a learned behavior and all too prevalent among wives these days.  Does your wife watch a lot of TV shows and commercials where the wife and children are the intelligent, worldly, sophisticated and attractive people who add to society, while the husband is nothing but a clueless dolt and an object of scorn and ridicule whose only value is the income he brings home?  They should let me write for TV.  But I digress...
    Adobe Reader for Palm is an old and outdated application.  Try the freeware PalmPDF which gets mostly rave reviews here and elsewhere, and does *not* require conversion on your desktop first.  Another application which can read "native" pdf files (i.e. without conversion) is the current version of Documents To Go, which is a $30 (I think) paid upgrade from the version which comes with the E2.
    8. Ideally I can work on converted excel and word files on the TE2, but then I can't just walk into work and transfer that to my PC, unless I have the PalmOne software loaded at work-- which as I stated was a no-no.
    Well, you can move the files to your PC if you have a USB SD card reader.  Make sure the files are on the card.  Pop the card into a card reader, plug it into your PC, and off you go.  You could also email the file to yourself at work from the E2 (requires wireless email, discussed above), or Bluetooth it to your PC if your PC is Bluetooth-enabled.
    9.  The entire owner's manual should just automatically come as an e-book loaded on the device, but it doesn't. I have to get to a PC and go surfing in order to read up on how to do anything on this device, and it's really cumbersome (because I have a lot of kids, and there's just no time to do anything...).
    You can put the owners manual onto a SD card if you want.  It comes as a .pdf on the installation disc, and is also downloadable from the E2 support site.  It's a pretty large file and reading it/navigating around it on the E2 might be a little clunky, even with PalmPDF or Documents To Go v.10.  I would not even *try* using Adobe Reader for Palm to put it onto the E2 that way.
    10.  I bought the geek-squad protection from BestBuy, and out of the gate they appear to have given me bad info.
    I don't know exactly what that gets you.  What did they say it was, and how much did that cost you?  If it includes an extended warranty, then maybe there's some benefit.
    Anyway, anyone care to field some of these concerns, and help get me on track to increased productivity and happier marriage with some helpful hints?  Anything to avoid more hardship and heartbreak would also be good.  Oh, and sorry I sounded whiny...
    Hope some of this helps.  Do you have an idea of what other types of things you'd like to do with your E2.  There are many more things you can do with the E2, you probably haven't scratched the surface yet.  It doesn't sound like many of them would help your relationship with the Spousal Unit, as I am guessing that she is already predisposed against anything cool like Palm PDAs.  It is a heavy burden which many of us share, but most of us learn to manage.  If you really want to impress her, you can show her how your new E2 can also double as a replacement remote control for your TV, stereo, cable, etc.  Most wives really go for that extra functionality.
    If I were to give any piece of unsolicited advice (it being much easier to risk someone else's life than one's own, and spend someone else's money than one's own), you might consider trying to navigate your way into a Palm TX instead of the E2.  Do you have return privileges at BestBuy if you don't like the E2?  If so, I'd jump on it, spring for the TX (bigger screen, more memory, built-in Wi-Fi), and gird yourself for whatever tongue-lashing you'll get.  It'll be worth it.
    Good luck.  If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Used Sound Check on my iTunes library-did I make a mistake?

    Hi all,
    I have some rudimentary questions about iTunes, and the "Sound Check" feature in particular.
    I've just completed converting my 18K FLAC song library into ALAC, mainly to use iTunes Genius mixes and to be more compatible with my iPhone and Touch. My library was ripped a few years ago when I bought my Sonos system to get whole-house music. At that time, I ripped my CD's into the FLAC to maintain the highest sound quality possible. No equalization was applied during the ripping.
    Once I loaded my new ALAC songs into iTunes (converted using XLD), I began experimenting with Sound Check to normalize the volume among my songs, especially where the Genius mixes are concerned (I have quite a bit of classical music). While iTunes started the long conversion of my music to use Sound Check, I started reading about volume normalization and the effects of the quality of the sound. I read that Sound Check was really not the right way to go if I wanted to just normalize the volume; that it also affected the sound quality.
    After reading this, I stopped the iTunes Sound Check conversion. Luckily, iTunes had only converted around 400 songs into Sound Check. But now I'm worried about those songs that iTunes did convert, and if I have compromised the sound quality of my ALAC tracks.
    How does iTunes determine the Sound Check settings? I initially thought that Sound Check only affected the playback volume of the songs, but upon reading the discussions, it seems to change other things?
    Does Sound Check store its parameters in a tag(s)? Or does it physically change the songs themselves? I hope that it does not change the songs, or I'll have to reconvert those 400 songs again.
    Is there another program that I can use to just normalize the volume of the songs across my library? In the discussions I read, iVolume was mentioned, but I don't (obviously) have any experience with this program nor any others that affect song playback. Any suggestions as to other apps to investigate would be appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.
    Mike

    Thanks for the reply Jim and for the link to the KB article. I looked through all the tags by showing each one, but I didn't see any that looked like they were populated by Sound Check. I'll read the link you provided to find out more.

    I have used iVolume for some time and have been very satisfied. Of course, at age 64 I no longer have audiophile hearing. You can get information here: http://www.mani.de/ivolume/index.html
    I have 52 year-old ears, both of which have tinnitus, so I know about my lack of audiophile hearing I just want to make sure that I don't mess up the audio quality of my songs for the next generation
    Thanks again. I'll look at iVolume more closely.

  • Help, my first Apple product.  Is this normal or did I make a mistake?

    Hi I just bought my first ever Apple product ever.  New to me is an old 17 inch iMac (late 2006 build) that according to the serial number was actually assembled in May 2007.  Anyways I hear how Macs never crash....  I bought this on EBAY with only a guarantee not to be dead on arrival.  Appearance wise this thing looks new.  It came with 10.7.0 installed.  I ran this for a few hours no problem.  It asked me to update so I did.  During the update to 10.7.5 the process was going slow so I walked away.  When I came back the screen was dark and the light on the front was on solid.  The system would not respond to the mouse or any keys.  I held the power button and it shut off eventually.  I started it back up again with no problems and spent a few more hours on it.  Then I decided to look at the serial number to find out what I actually got.  I had it turned on when I gently laid it back to see the number on the stand.  When I tilted it forward back onto the stand the screen was frozen.  It is possible my big belly hit some keys when I did this.  The brightness logo was on the screen along with the web page I had up.  However the mouse or keyboard did not do anything.  I see these had a high rate of logic board failures and I am worried about that.  I repowered again with no issues yet. (about two more hours)
    So what I want to know is if this is normal or not.  A windows machine freezing during an update I would not think twice about it.  I also have no idea if it has a safety that would be triggered by laying it back?  Would the system ignore the mouse or keyboard if my big belly rested on it thinking it had stuck keys or something?  Your ideas and thoughts please.  I only need this computer for in the kitchen use and also to retrieve old videos from a even older camcorder.  However I do not want to waste money on something that is broke.    Thank You.

    Thanks everybody.  It looks to me that the seller gets these in bulk from either schools, libraries that are updating equipment or something.  That would explain the no discs.  He sells a lot of them.  It is very clean, taking the access cover off no dust or anything.  Appearance wise not a mark on it except for some residue from tape that I was able to clean off.  It looks showroom condition, not faded or anything.   I paid only $130.00 for it.  For another $47 I can get a two year warranty for it.  I guess that is what I will do since they are dumb enough to offer such a warranty on a old computer.
    I will take the advice and buy retail of Snow Leopard.  I was thinking it may be a better choice for me anyways for what I want it to do.  Look up and store recipes, play music over bluetooth, perhaps watch a video.  I also bought it for the old firewire port that I need for my 15 year old camcorder before that stops working or the tapes go bad.  I see the new ones have Thunderbolt ports that I would need to adapt to Firewire 800 then to 400 and again down to the small 4 pin port for the cam.... and hope it works on an old cam.
    Anyways curiosity got the best of me so that is why I dipped my foot into an Apple.  I did not want to blow a grand to find out if I like it or not.  With some other upgrades, larger hard drive, one more GB of memory, wireless mouse, keyboard, Snow Leopard, and the extended warranty I will have about $250 invested in it total.  I would be happy if that gets me through two years of mundane use.  Perhaps I will be hooked along the way....

  • Please read..did I make a mistake with this computer?

    Ok I'm a guy who a year ago just took a leap and starting to learn 3d graphics and spent my wife and my savings on a mac quadcore power pc, maya 7 at the time and now 8.5, photoshop and zbrush.
    I did the research and hear that this mac was the right workstation for me. They said it was fast with ps cs2 and maya. They had graphs proving it. So I talked my wife in to it and boom.
    Now I feel like I screwed up. I did a benchmark test at zoorender.com and realized that it was taking twice as long as some of the comparable computers even ones with just two cores. But I just lived with it . I did do some searches trying to find a way to speed things up. I even posted on sites ( this one too ) but nothing. So I grind and bared it. Now I'm in the process of learning nCloth and the tutorial that I am watching this guy is moving the cloth around like nothing in realtime. When I try doing what he is doing ( same thing just a 40x 40 plane that is pinned in one corner and moving it around ) it takes forever. just to move half an inch. And the guy in the tutorial is moving all over the screen and the cloth is just following and acting like real cloth in real time.
    I've been watching my processors when I do stuff and it seems that its only using one of them when I'm doing the ncloth stuff. And only two when I am rendering in mental ray. Maya render is using all four so I guess thats o.k. but I like working in mental ray with final gather GI and... Heck I just want all my processors to work with it. Same with modeling and ncloth.
    I even bought more ram. Not realizing at the time anything over 4 gigs is just a waste. And none of the programs I use will use the 8 gigs I have...
    In zbrush Its fine till it gets to one million polygons then it slows down big time.
    What am I doing wrong.
    Did I screw up by buying this mac? Dont get me wronge I love the mac style of the osx. But the programs I need to run are just so slow. I feel terrible. My wife hears me complaining.. and I feel Like I just through our savings away for nothing. When I could of spent less on a pc running windows and saved some money. I don't know..... I love the feel of the osx operating system but thats not helping me with the things I need its just windows dressing.
    Please any help any of you can give would be so appreciated. If I am just an idiot and I have some setting wrong please just tell how I can fix it . My mac info is posted below.
    By the way you will be seeing this a lot I am going to try and post it where ever I think I can get some help. So sorry if you get tired of seeing it : )
    Thanks for reading.

  • Can you guys help me find where did I make the mistake?

    Hi guys...
    I am working in two different frames, where in one of them I have a user input text field and besides I have a button that takes me to the next frame.
    In the next frame I have the output box, but I dont get there what I typed in the input one.
    Any help?
    This is what I have:
    FRAME 1
    import flash.utils.Timer;
    import flash.events.TimerEvent;
    import flash.text.Font;
    import flash.text.FontStyle;
    import flash.text.FontType;
    import flash.display.SimpleButton;
    var txt_inp:TextField = new TextField();
    txt_inp.x = 20;
    txt_inp.y = 700;
    txt_inp.width = 400;
    txt_inp.height = 50;
    txt_inp.restrict = "0-9 a-z A-Z";
    txt_inp.maxChars = 28;
    var myText:String = "Type your name here / Escriba su nombre aqui";
    var format:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
    format.font = "CooperBlack";
    format.size = 20;
    txt_inp.defaultTextFormat = format;
    var ok:Ok = new Ok();
    captureText();
    function captureText():void
                txt_inp.type = TextFieldType.INPUT;
                txt_inp.background = true;
                addChild(txt_inp);
                txt_inp.text = myText;
                txt_inp.addEventListener(TextEvent.TEXT_INPUT, textInputCapture);
    function textInputCapture(event:TextEvent):void

                                  ok.y = 720;
                                  ok.width = 80
                                  ok.height = 80;
      addChild(ok);
    var str:String = txt_inp.text;
    ok.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, toGameOver);
    function toGameOver (e:MouseEvent):void {
              ok.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, toGameOver)
              gotoAndStop(5);
    FRAME 2
    removeChild(ok);
    removeChild(txt_inp);
    var myOutputBox:TextField = new TextField();
    var GOver:gameOver = new gameOver();
    GOver.x = 300;
    GOver.y = 337,85;
    GOver.width = 1500;
    GOver.height = 1000;
    myOutputBox.x = 420;
    myOutputBox.y = 700;
    myOutputBox.width = 400;
    myOutputBox.height = 50;
    myOutputBox.defaultTextFormat = format;
    addChild(GOver);
    createOutputBox(str);
    function createOutputBox(str:String):void
    myOutputBox.background = true;
    myOutputBox.x = 200;
    addChild(myOutputBox);
    myOutputBox.text = str;
    Thanks a lot!!!

    You need to be mindful of when you assign the str value....
    var str:String = txt_inp.text;
    The way you have it as shown, it is going to assign the nothing that is in the textfield since that line will execute before any text gets assigned.
    You would want to have that assignment done after the text in the textfield changes.  You still need to declare the variable outside any function so that it can be available to frame two in terms of scope, but the assignment needs to happen in your textInputCapture function.
    Also, using the TextEvent.TEXT_INPUT event will likely miss the mark as well since it triggers before the text is changed in the textfield, which will cause the text to be missing the last character entered.  You should use the Event.CHANGE event instead.

  • I can no longer get my MacBook to recognize the same camera (Sony DCR-SR68) I've been doing this with for the last year.  I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.1 - did I make a mistake to upgrade my software ????!!!!

    I am trying not lose my mind - and I won't even go into the Paralells issues.
    My Grandmother just had a stroke, and I just want to get the video from some of this summer's parties with her.
    Same MacBook,  Same Sony DCR-SR68 Handycam,  Same IMovie
    The only difference is the 'new'  'upgrade'd software.  The time I could be spending with my family, I am just drowning in all my computer issues
    that I never had before this upgrade.
    Help !

    After plugging in your camcorder, I would run Software update just one more time.
    I would also try to see if the app "Image Capture" doesn't see your camcorder. This is found in your applications folder but you can get to it easily by hitting command and space bar to bring up spotlight and then typing "Image Capture".
    the current version of iMovie is 9.0.7
    you could try creating a new user and seeing if the camera doesn't connect from there.
    if it doesn't then you might need to find a friend with a compatible OS until Sony decides to update it's support for OSX.
    I looked on their site but it doesn't seem like they've ever supported it with your model.
    you might also want to send feedback to apple as to your experience, although their support is limited to their own hardware, so calling Sony might be a better idea...

  • Did i make mistake?

    hi ,
    i bought fresh new ThinkPad X201, about 10 days ago or so, probably it was the last X201 in my country, i directly bought it from distributor.
    but after desire to upgrade some parts of it,  i realized it is difficult to find its compatible parts such as RAM .. etc.
    i asked a price from IBM-Lenovo technical service about some original parts via FRU numbers and they gave me double of the laptop's price just for 2 single parts. 8gb RAM + 256gb SSD.. ( i bought laptop about 800 dollars and 2 parts are about 1700 dollars )  because it is 4 years old technology and it has rare parts which some are not producing anymore.
    thankfully i bought normal intel ssd from one of online store about 260 dollars.
    now i began to ask myself, did i make a mistake by buying 4 years old technology because of my love for traditional IBM Designed Thinkpads not to buy new lenovo X240 crap ?
    X201 was the last X series ThinkPad which had been produced in Traditional ThinkPad design ( with 7-row keyboard, thinklight, blue enter key, lid..etc )
    why is it so difficult to upgrade my ThinkPad X201 ?
    + ThinkPad X201 3626-FBG / Intel Core i5 M520 2.4Ghz / DDR3 8Gb / Intel SSD 730 Series 240Gb / 12.1" WXGA 1280x800px / Dual boot Win7 Pro x64 - Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64bit + X200 Ultrabase + ThinkVision L2250p

    Hi,
    I gave you my opinion about RAM incompatibility in your laptop. I know tens of owners of more powerful laptops based on SandyBridge with the same KVR sticks you bought w/o issues. IMHO Not Kingston VAR is a reason of issue but parameters of the RAM sticks you've got and your laptop. Anyway there are tons of compatible RAM sticks and other original parts at the market (ebay, amazon, aliexpress...)
    x201 is very good, reliable laptop with classic traditional design in IBM traditions. It's very good choice especially your laptop is not used.
    x220 actually is the last "looks like classic" laptop, of course, it's not IBM already but not modern pop Lenovo yet. The only disadvantage of x201 I see is the old CPU and GPU.
    x220 | i5-2520m | Intel ssd 320 series | Gobi 2000 3G GPS | WiFi
    x220 | i5-2520m | hdd 320 | Intel msata ssd 310 series | 3G GPS | WiFi
    Do it well, worse becomes itself

  • Did I make mistake leaving virgin? Losing internet...

    Hi, I had this worry when I changed to BT and it has unfortunately it's turned out to be true despite people on forum saying unlikely. For morning and aftermoon I don't notice reliability issues. Videos steam fine but every evening I lose internet for 30sec to 5 min few times. Streaming videos stop works and rather frustratingly it makes it impossible to play any online games during this hour.
    I haven't had this problem on virgin for past 5 years at all. They been completely solid in terms of reliability.
    Did I make mistake leaving virgin?
    What's the best way to try to have this problem solved? Should I call BT?
    I know how frustrating and very possibly unhelpful support on phone can be. What do you guys recommend?
    PS/Edit: On positive side I near just down the road from cabinet and get 69-74mb speed and when it works I can stream HD no problem unlike virgin where they cap ur 30mb after few hours so HD can't be streamed any more for rest of the day.

    Do you lose connection while connected using an Ethernet connection?

Should have I let it to get discharged in order to fully charge it ? Somebody told me I should have let it discharged and then to fully charge, but I didn't do it, my iphone is working very well, the battery too but I'm worried if the battery lifespan is gonna get worsen soon if I didn't abide by the rules and procedures of battery charging.
    I had problems on my previous iPhone 4s, it died because I didn't replaced the battery with a new one because my battery never worked well and I never knew it , the battery used to overheat my iPhone and it caused to damage my processor completely to death. Who does the replacement of the iphone processor?  I need help how to maintain with the iphone battery. And also let me know if I did something wrong that I should get worried about or not ?!?!

    Apple does not fix the iPhone 4S, they replace the phone. If not covered by warranty, called an out of warranty exchange. Cost is US $199. Make an appointment at any Apple store.
    Be aware, Apple does not sell iPhone parts, thus there is no legitimate source for genuine parts.
