ITunes 11 removed Display duplicates option

I downloaded iTunes 11 and there is no longer an option to Display Dupicates in the File menu. Am I missing it somewhere or did they get rid of it?

I don't think implementation would have been an issue. Much of the behind the scenes code won't have been changed. The duplicates filter will most likely be a pretty standard SQL query.
One of the problems with the old display duplicates feature was that novice users would select all the displayed items and delete them, only to discover that their library now contained no copies of the tracks that had previously been duplicated. Even when this is understood there are a number of different ways of generating duplicates in iTunes, some of which create extra files on the hard drive, some of which don't. When deleting it is important to know which you have otherwise you can delete the only physical copy of a track in error. This is one of the reasons I wrote the DeDuper script, not because I needed it, but because I was interested to see if it could be done automatically and safely. I haven't completely achieved the second goal yet (problems with a special case where one file is added to the library from two different paths), but automating the process allows preservation & amalgamation of ratings, play counts, playlist membership which just isn't possible by hand. HT2905 I updated the latest itunes software and Display Duplicates is no longer under the file menu. How do I get rid of all the duplicates?

Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin. Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. (If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)
Note if some of the duplicate items have the iCloud link icon sign out of the store, then sign in again.

Why doesn't the new itunes find and display duplicates?

it's annoying. Also, I can't display just a single artist and display by song, so I can see the duplicates by artist.

Unfortunately this feature isn't part of iTunes 11. Apple announced though they want to restore the feature with a small update.
To display a single artist and display by song, you could use the search option in the "song" tab. Disable "Search entire library" in the search options.

Is there a new way to Display Duplicates in iTunes 11?

Used to be under file Display Duplicates but now it is gone. Anyone found the new way? Is there one? Did they really take away that functionality??

I not this is no consolation, and I am upset that this functionaliy is missing. But I think the best thing we can do is let them know that we want it back. I've already sent off a feedback form to Apple. I'm sure it'll fall on deaf ears, but maybe if enough people do it asking for "Display Duplicates" back mayb we'll see it in an update. I think it's been removed, which is frankly astonishing. It wasn't a perfect tool but did help when you have a large library. It needs putting back ASAP. I've submitted feedback via http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

In the meantime I have written two Windows scripts to make playlists of Duplicates and Exact Duplicates, either from a selection of tracks or the entire library. Note that, as with the iTunes feature, this list makes no distinction between "originals" and "dupes", you have to decide which is which.

If you've paused the download (they are partially greyed out on the duplicates screen ?) then you will need to delete them from download window, you can't (as far as I know) delete partially downloaded items from that screen. When you have items downloading, or downloads that are paused, you should have a downward pointing arrow at the top right of the iTunes screen
If you click that arrow you should get a popup window with the items that are downloading/paused - and you should be able to select and delete them (or resume their download) from there.

Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes does not create duplicates.
Only the user importing content multiple times creates duplicates.
Delete the duplicates and stop importing the same content multiple times.
