Did "keep window on top" go away in Safari 7.0.5?

I just upgraded and it seems to be gone.

It was never in Safari. You must have had some third party software (e.g., Afloat) that did it, which is now possibly broken.

Application to pin/keep windows on top?

Does anyone know an app that will keep/pin one (or multiple) window on top of currently open windows? Afloat doesn't seem to work for many apps, and quite often I need to have few different chat windows going while working on something else in full screen. I can't freaking believe something like this is so difficult to find in OS X world!

There used to be a plugin called Afloat that woulkd let you keep a window on top of the others but I can't get it work in 10.10 Yosemite. Is there a new version or another similar program?

Not in QT Player, but here's a nifty trick using Stickies:
Launch Applications/Stickies, create a new note, then with that note active, select "Note > Floating Window".
Now locate the QT mov you wish to view and drag/drop it on the floating Sticky note. Stickies will ask you if you want to Copy or Alias the mov- select "Alias". This will create a pointer to the original mov (smaller) instead of copying it holus bolus into the sticky. Note if you move the original mov file, you'll break the alias.
Back in the sticky, drag the grab handle in the bottom right-hand corner to resize the note so you can see all the mov and the controller bar. For some reason, Stickies will scale a mov to fit a note on the X plane (horizontal) but not the Y plane (vertical) until it's at 100% size. It won't scale up from 100%.
If the floating sticky mov is too big at 100% for your display size, there are 2 possible workarounds:
a) In Stickies, make the mov note active and select "Note > Translucent Window". This will make the note (and the mov) "see through" so you can see other stuff underneath it, even while the mov plays, or;
b) If you have a QT Pro Key, open the mov in QT Player before you drag/drop into Stickies, set it to view at half size (or whatever) then "File > Save As" allowing dependencies. This will create a small reference mov that points to the original, maintaining the smaller viewing size (again, if you move the original, you'll break the reference). Now drag/drop that reference mov into the Sticky note as above and the mov will display at the smaller size.
Hope that all makes sense. No clue how you'd do something similar on Windows.

Keeping a window on top using JNI.

Hi,
We would like to keep a java JFrame as the top window on the screen.
There is plenty of discussion regarding the fact that it's not possible without a native call which I accept (there is a price to pay for system independence). BUT, in my situation this isn't an issue, because it will always run on Windows.
So... my question is how do you use the JNI to keep a window on top? I've never used JNI, so from the top please... ... ...

When Firefox desktop icon click'd for a new window, all existing windows first refresh with the new FF window on top; how to keep other windows minimized?

Oldest FF windows are overlaid by newer FF with the new FF window on top.
This wastes time & monitor-space.
It is likely just a simple setting somewhere ...

This can be caused by a problem with an extension (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

An article in the New York Times yesterday told how to remove unwanted fonts from the Font Book. I followed its instructions (the same as those on the webpage "support.apple.com/kb/ht2509") and was NOT successful in removing fonts. Despite what the newspaper article and the web page stated, my attempts to remove fonts were unsuccessful. I use perhaps 15-20 of the hundreds and hundreds of fonts, and deleting those I don't use would make choosing a font a lot faster. I called support and was told not to try to remove any fonts which I myself had not added to the list(I have not added any) as doing so could cause significant problems elsewhere. The support tech suggested that there might be independent software programs which would keep at the top of the list those fonts I have used, which sure would speed up the process of selecting a font. Anyone know of such a program, or how to safely alter the font list Thanks.

I just spoke again to tech support and this time an answer was provided that works! Choose the font you want to use, drag it to the left, and a new "unnamed" folder will appear. Continue to drag into that folder fonts you want to use. You can click onto that folder to change its name. Then when using font book merely click on that folder to open it and select the font wanted. This tech rep also confirmed that you should NOT try to delete individual fonts as they are part of the basic operating system; he did confirm that the apple web page in parentheses above says otherwise, and will refer that to higher ups to see about removing or modifying that page.

Since I know nothing about your machine (model), I can only have a guess: Normally a PC has a builtin sound card. To install a new sound card you need a spare slot on your machine OR you can use USB sound card now. Which ever way, you machine should already have a sound card. It may not have builtin microphone, speaker(s) but it should have normal jacks/plugs for a microphone and headphones.
To use Skype, all you need is to use a normal headset (with microphone) and plug to the right ports (front or back) of your computer and let Skype know.

Iv'e had my mac for 2 weeks & now have a problem with safari since I changed to a wireless super hub. It will not open a web site I use my iPad & windows lap top will. Apple support say it's the DNS settings cable say there okay please can anyone help

Iv'e had my mac for 2 weeks safari was working great until I changed to a wire less super hub. Safari will not let me open & log into a web site I go on a lot. My ipad & windows lap top will on the same network. Apple have said it's the DNS setting my cable provider say it's not it's a problem with my mac. Iv'e phoned apple lots of times same with cable provider Iv'e tried a few things it has not helped solve the problem. I'm now advised to return my mac to the shop for a check. Has anyone else had this problem I would appreciate any help because I'm going round in circles.

Adding a couple of DNS numbers sometimes helps:
System Preferences>Network, select your wifi or ethernet network on the left and click on the 'advanced' button and then the DNS tab. On the left side of the window make a note of any DNS numbers listed so that you can re-instate them if necessary and then click on the '+" button bottom left of the window. Type 8.8.8.8 and click the + again and type 8.8.4.4 save the settings and try the website again.
BTW, I have the same problem with Firefox not letting me input my password in secure sites. I did find a workround in the network settings in Firefpx prefs, but it didn't stick so I reverted to using Chrome as alternative browser. No problems with that so long as you don't mind Google looking over your shoulder

How to keep screen on top of others

Hi there,
I'm not sure if this is posted already. If it is I apologise.
I have a question which is to do with keeping one screen on top. By this I mean that I would like to watch a movie (keeping this on top)
and at the same time I would like to maybe do my work, play another game or something that is multi-tasking.
I can't stagger the windows around the screen because the screen sizes are locked... so is it possible if I can keep one screen locked on top of another? instead of staggering them around the screen?
I hope my questions is easy to understand. I'm not usually good with technical terminology. Thank you in advance!

Problem placing window on top of adobe reader window

I am using window 7 and adobe reader . When ever I drag a window on top of adobe, it seems to push the window away. The window that I wanted to drag on top of adobe will snap back to a place close to the orgiinal local but it does not got back to exactly the same location. This does not happen with any of the microsoft office windwos like word or excel. I can drap another window on top of excel with no problem. Is there any way to fix this?

Minimizing the Adobe Reader works, but many times I need that document for reference while working. It is paintful to have to minimize ever time I need to move a window. Has anyone seen this problem. Ideally, I like to find out what the underlining issue is and fix that.

CD Burn window will not go away

I hit "stop" while burning a cd. I ejected the cd. the "Burn" window will not go away! it says it is burning and has the middle yellow button, so i cannot get rid of it! ihave restarted multiple times to no avail. I am able to burn other cds... but i cannot get rid of the stupid window! I am sure it is a simple issue... please help! thanks

I have pitched the CD. I had to update the file, which is why i stopped in mid-burn. so i cannot put the same cd back in. i have been able to burn others, i just cannot get the darn window to close.
i have shut down and restarted several times, and it is still there. everything is grayed out except the yellow button on the top left of the window...

"Help" window - unable to impose another window on top of help window

Why isn't it possible to put another application's window, on top of a Help window?
It becomes quite obtrusive when you are reading the Help for an application, and you wish to open another window, and have it sit on top of the Help window, without being able to do so.
If somebody knows a workaround on this, please let me know. I have had this internal complaint on this issue ever since Tiger, and still on Leopard, I don't understand the logic of "Help" windows trying to control your Desktop view. You can basically have only a Help window minimized or as a top layer window, it's impossible (that I am aware of) to have it behind another application's window, etc.

No, what should be the case is that the Help window behaves like any other window: click on another window and it comes forward, click on the Help window and it comes forward, and so on. Truthfully I did not read the article V.K. cited, just clicked the link and saw the default write command was there, and assumed it was the same as the original discovery--which I have used on my own system.

That's all I did. AFAIK nothing else is necessary and the Help window then behaves like any other window. I copied the command from the original MacOSXHints discussion:

How can I keep windows in front while using other apps?

I want to keep a Preview window in front of all windows while I work in photoshop, how can I do that? I know it is possible, because I saw an artist do it on youtube. He had his references opened up in Preview, while working photohsop, and the Preview window some how stays above the Photoshop window. I know I can just have them side by side by using photoshop in window mode, and shtinking it into a half sized window, but I have porblem rotating the canvas and it is just to small to work when it is like that. He mangaed to use phoshop in full window mode (fills the whole screen) and still have his preview window stay in front. I asked him but I got no reply. So I was hoping some here would know.

Yeah, I was also using Afloat before updating to Lion, but now it seems it is not compatible anymore. Mac should have that function (keep a window on top) built in - such an easy thing and so helpful, much more than all claimed "productivity" apps etc. Linux has it since always...

Keep QT on top

Is it possible to keep QuickTime on top of other windows at all times?

You can turn off a preference in FCP's user prefs, to bring all windows to front on activation. That way only the windows you click on come in front of the DVD player.
But probably a better way to handle the problem is to use the tab+apple key to bounce back and forth between the two apps. Try that...
My book will work just fine in FCP 5, comes with a ton of media to work with, and will hone your skills I think.
Also Apple's Pro Training series is much the same, and are written well. I'm working now on a training DVD...

Before you do anything else, I would make a copy of the Windows system on to an external hard disk. Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) will help you do this.
Bootcamp partition needs to be set up using Bootcamp Assistant, from within Lion. There are sometimes problems using third party disk management apps, and the partition order is important too.
I suspect the previous owner should have re-installed his original OS before giving you the computer. Are you saying that there is no Lion on it at present? If so, you will need to get it, or if it was Snow Leopard, the installation disk, from him. In the latter case, with SL 10.6.8 installed, you can then access MAS to buy Lion.
Once you have Lion installed you can setup Bootcamp and restore your Windows system to it, from the external disk.
