Did my airport express die?

Have had my airport express for a few years now. Lately, it has a flashing amber light and i can no longer print wireless. I tried resetting it by inserting a paper clip in the reset button, holding it for 10 to 15 seconds and plugging it back in. It turns solid amber than flashes amber. Have done this numerous times to no avail. I opened airport utility and scan for the airport, it never finds it. Do these things have a limit as to how long they last? Wondering if i need to purchase a new one?

Bandit,
I'm pleased you are back up and running, in the event you need to do a reset again that is done with the power on. Pressing the reset button with the AX unplugged does nothing. The correct procedure is:
1. Power on the AX
2. Using a paperclip (or similar) depress the reset button until the amber light begins flashing rapidly.
3. Remove paperclip and restart Airport Utility to begin installation.

  • Airport Express died

    Hi there
I was happily surfing away on my PowerBook via Airport Express the other day when there was a pop from the speakers via AirTunes and my wireless connection died.
Since then there has been no power light on the front of the Airport Express unit.
Could this be a blown fuse? If so, how easy is it to replace?
The unit is out of warranty. What else could it be? Am I better off just buying a new one or is there hope for resurecting this one do you think?
    Cheers

Same thing happened to mine not more than 10 minutes
ago. I hope it can be resurrected...
Mine conked out last night, but only now have I had the time to look at it. No power light comes on. Tried different power outlets. Nothing. I think it's just inside its warranty, so I'll be going back to the retailer to get this sorted out. Unless anyone here has any experience solving this...

  • Is my Airport Express dying?

Lately, I have been experiencing frequent connection problems with my Airport Express (Model No. A1264) that I bought back in 2008. Most of the time the AirPort icon will be at a full signal everywhere in the house but mysterious cannot connect to the internet. The AirPort is constantly connected to two MacBooks and two iPhones. In addition, a Wii and PS3 whenever they are on.
I have done more hard resets which usually solve the problem but only for a couple days until this happens all over again. This leads me to believe that maybe the AirPort is old and just dying. Does or can this happen? Any feedback would be helpful before I go to the Apple Store and grab a new one.
    Thanks!

Welcome to the discussion area, csullivan1980!
It is reasonable to expect an AirPort Express to function for 4-5 years or more on average. While it is possible that your device may be declining, the symptoms you describe sound much more like a probable wireless interference issue. If that's the case, a new Express will have exactly the same type of problems.
Any other nearby wireless networks, cordless phones (even at the neighbors), or wireless camera/security systems can cause connection issues with a given wireless network. See this Apple Support Document for more information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365?viewlocale=en_US
All you can really do is try different wireless channels on your AirPort Express to see if you can find some clear airspace. If you live in a dense area with a lot of other wireless networks and cordless phones around you, it may be difficult to find a good channel.
To do this, you would do the following:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab/label just under the row of icons
Experiment with different Wireless Channel settings. Start at 11 and work down from there
Click the Update button to save your changes
Try to locate the AirPort Express away from any other electronic devices and if possible, get it up high rather than down low on the wall. An extension cord will come in handy for this.

  • My airport express died and stop after 2 years

What is the waranty period for airport express as my other router D-Link still running after 6 years

Depends where you are - consumer law almost certainly gives you more protection than Apple's warranty.
Airports do seem to break down very frequently - I've had several die. I think it's caused by the lack of ventilation but I could be wrong. I usually buy them second hand these days from eBay - interestingly enough these seem to last longer than new ones from Apple. I suspect that's because if they have survived long enough to get on eBay they are the "good" ones.

  • Airport Express "died" - no lights - no power? cannot reset - help!

I have had my airport express both extending my airport G network and have been using it to stream airtunes. I have had this thing hooked up for quite a while. always on. i woke up this morning and the light was off. i checked in itunes and it couldn't see it. so i unplugged it and tested the outlet and the outlet works. so i plugged it back in and still no light. i swapped the power cord attachment and still no light. i tried to soft, hard and factory reset but none of these seem to do anything. can't tell if they're working anyway since the light just stays off. i can't access the firmware or anything obviously because i think i can't even turn it on... any suggestions?
Airport Express A1084   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Using Airport G, Intel iMac and PowerBook G4

Just for the record, since I have no warranty coverage and can't get it fixed, but my 30 month old airport express is dead.
Even though it lived longer than the average lifespan of the AX, nevertheless it isn't my dream to buy a new base station.
Now I'm stuck with a PowerBook doing the ADSL connection distribution.
I must say I found it infuriating coming back home and finding the light is not aglow.
    Cheers!

  • Airport express died  n/s  HS5100FYR4N

"I contacted the DK Apple Store (where it was purchased) and asked for a replacement because - as stated on hardmac.com and in this thread - the APX clearly has a manufacturing error. I was told to go to the nearest Apple retailer and - while stating an Apple case no.- get them to confirm that it is in fact a manufacturing error. "Then we can talk about replacement," the supporter said. But that took like 25 mins. on hold. So here's hoping..."

+"When I use my Express to extend I can't select a radio mode. I think it's only possible to select a radio mode on a device that creates a wireless network. The only option is just to extend a selected network."+
Yes, you are correct. But, make sure that you have a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients" on the setup page for the AirPort Express.
I assume that you also have a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended" on the setup page for the Time Capsule.
If you are trying 802.11n only 5 GHz, remember that the higher frequency signals of this band are absorbed by walls and any obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals.
You could test for proper operation at 5 GHz by powering down the Express and then moving your MBP close to the Time Capsule to see if you can connect that way. Then move further away and test other locations, especially the location where the Express is now positioned. If the Express can't "see" the 5 GHz signal, it obviously won't be able to "extend" it.
I've found that a good starting point for the Express is a position that is approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance from the base station and the area that you want to cover.
Once you have the network back up, you can check to make sure that your MBP is really connecting to the Express (not the Time Capsule), by holding down the option key on your computer and clicking the fan shaped airport icon at the top of your screen. Right below the name of the network, you will see a MAC address. That should be the MAC address of the AirPort Express.

    Hello JBrans!

  • I cannot setup my AirPort Express

Trying to change over to an AirPort Express from old D-Link router.  Initially tried to use as an extender, but would not connect to my network.  Tried to disconnect my router and use the the Express as router.  This did not work.  Repeated attempts to reset system have not worked.  Help.

I had same problem also, 1st make sure you have downloaded CD airport utility on to computer, open utility so it is looking for new base station, plug airport express into wall plug, turn power on and wait for computer to find it, if fails as mine did - reset airport express while switched on with a paper clip, wait till orange light flashes and release , hopefully then your computer will find it. The user name on express has also been reset to XXXXXX password public. Good luck.

  • Airport Express is shutting off when running newer firmwares including the latest 7.6.1

    Hi All,
My Airport Express has started shutting off in the past month or so after upgrading to the newer firmwares 7.6 & 7.6.1
When the Airport Express shuts off, the status light goes dark and the only way to reset it is to unplug it, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in.
After I plug the unit back in, it works for maybe 15 to 20 minutes and shuts off again.
I googled the problem and I have noticed that others are having similar problem. Some people say that the hardware is failing or has failed. Others have mentioned resetting the unit to defaults and or downgrading the firmware.
So I reset my unit to factory, but it didnt seem to help and the unit still kept turning off.
Next I tried downgrading the firmware.
I tried looking for a way to downgrade using the new Airport Utility on my Mac thats running Lion. However i could not find such and option. So i found the older version (AirPort Utility 5.6) on Apples website that would allow me to do the fimware downgrade.
After installing the older version I managed to find the firmware downgrade function in Manual Setup. I downgraded the firmware to Version 7.3 (the oldest one I could choose). Once the unit has flashed itself it rebooted and came up in the Airport Utility. However It wouldnt allow me to configure the airport. The configuration options wouldnt load at all. This was fixed by resetting the unit to default. After it came back up I managed to set it up to how I had it before.
And since then its been running problem free without any hiccups for the past two days!!
My question is, has anyone seen this before? What could this be? Did Apple release the wrong firmware for my Airport Express Hardware? Did my Airport Express Flash the newer firmware imporperly? Were the settings from the old firmware incompatible with the newer firmware? Is the newer firmware causing the Aiport Express to oveheat or run out of spec? Or does Apple simply not put much effort into testing the firmware updates that it releases?
It would be nice if the Airport Express would flash a colored light instead of shutting down completely if something firmware/software related is causing the unit to crash or overheat.
I would like to know if anyone else has dealt with this problem.

    Two likely possibilities:
    1) An internal electronic component is on the verge of failure. It works until it gets hot, at which point it changes value and causes a shut down of the device.
    2) An internal connector is right on the verge of losing contact. When the device heats up, heat expansion causes a loss of physical contact.
I assume that the Express is out of warranty. It is a real longshot, but you might try to carefully saw open the AirPort Express along the center seam to split the case in half to expose the internal electronics. There might be something obvious.....but unfortunately, more likely not.
Chances are, you will need to replace the device.

  • Airport Express Problems w/Setup Assistant

My old Airport Express died yesterday. I got a new one tonight, but I can't make it connect to the internet. Ran through Airport Utility a few times; kept getting message that device can't get an IP address.
Computer connects OK (via PPPoE) when I connect the ethernet cable directly. Two computers connect wirelessly (via the Express) to each other. So I'm confident that the modem and both computers are functioning normally.
Called Verizon (my DSL provider), went through utility again, still no luck. He asked me to go to Airport Setup Assistant, but when I click on it, I get an error that says assistant can't help me with this Airport device. Message says to download proper assistant from Apple site, but I can't find whatever it is I need.
Another note: he says I need to select DHCP options for Express. As I said above, when I connect the ethernet cable directly to my iBook, I have to connect to the internet via PPPoE. Could this be part of the problem?
    Please help....

So, you're telling me that I need to somehow configure the AX for PPPoE, and then configure my computer(s) for DHCP?
    Yes.
For the AX, you configure PPPoE as follows:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network, or temporarily, connect directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, using the AirPort Utility (in Manual Setup), configure the following settings:
    Internet - Internet Connection
    o Connect Using: PPPoE
    o Username: <enter your PPPoE username>
    o Password: <enter your PPPoE password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter your PPPoE password>
    Internet - PPPoE
    o Connection: Always On
    o DNS Server(s): (optional)
    o Domain Name: (optional)

  • Original version of airport express

I have a wireless network set up using one of the original airport extremes, A few years ago I added an original model airport express into the system to serve as a repeater at the other side of the house. All has worked well until two days ago when the airport express died. I have moved it around to different electrical outlets with out success. It appears to be stone cold dead! No blinking light, nothing.
Any suggestion or insight would be appreciated.
The network is still up and running thanks to the airport extreme base station.
    Thanks

    Hello, Hugh,
You'll be more likely to get a quick response if you post in the appropriate Airport forum. This forum is intended for older, pre-G3 hardware, and so not the most likely place for those experienced with Airport issues to see your post.
    Good luck.

  • Airport Express not locking to DAC

    Hello
My old Airport Express died and Apple wouldn't get it fixed for me so I bought the new generation.
It doesn't work, when I play through iTunes to my DAC, there are audible pauses in the audio that occur at the same time my DAC displays "no lock".
The DAC is an Audiolab 8200 CD.
My old express worked without any issue.
The computer, a MBA 13 2013 is in the same room as the express.
    Express has latest firmware update
Mac is running latest Apple SW
The Audiolab 8200 CD DAC works with the same optical cable using my AppleTV 2nd generation, on the same wireless newtwork and the same MBA.
    --------How can I resolve this?

Ironically, after having discovered and reporting this issue with the airport express, I investigated it on computeraudiophile.com and an article mentioned jitter on the latest iteration of the airport express is very problematic, such that even expensive DACs with reputable ICs could not cope. The result of which is audio cutoffs. One thing is clear, I tested this against my Apple TV (all other variables remain the same, cable,  hardware, software, iTunes library etc and the issue was not reproducible). I intend on calling AppleCare to report this. I spent thousands of dollars this year on Apple equipment, I deserve to see a proper evaluation of the symptoms reported. I think we all do. It's even in Apple's interest to learn about this so that they can improve their product.
My DAC is an Audiolab 8200CD. I don't have the firmware version on hand.
I am not here posting this to put down Apple but I do feel a little cheated. I am looking for a logical explanation. I even tried different firmware on the express. My previous express worked fine until it died suddenly.

    Contact HP for support.
Explain that you are using a Mac, anticipate the inevitable groan, and wait patiently for their resident Mac expert to return from vacation.
Until then download and install its driver here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=5058338&cc=us&dlc=en &lc=en
Otherwise return the printer and purchase one from a company that visibly supports OS X. HP isn't on that list.
