Did my DVD drive magically downgrade itself?

So, over the weekend I upgraded to leopard. I backed up all my data to an external server. Did a clean install, and looked around at the system preferences, my internal DVD drive showed me as having +R DL capabilities. Based on what I have seen from users over the internet is common for my make and model of drive.
However, due to some issues with importing my user accounts off the which I finally got sorted out, I had to go back and install from the original 10.4 disks I got with my macbook, then import my user data, and then upgrade to 10.5. Problem is that once I did that my drive magically lost the ability to burn DL disks.

Is this akin to apple disabling certain functionality in it's hardware because I didn't buy the "pro" version. I did some digging last night and have seen various similar posts of people who have the exact same drive and have MUCH more burning options.
I am at a loss, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried a dual layer disc last night, and it spit it out saying (now I don't remember the exact error) but something akin to "this format isn't supported". Also by "pro" I mean things like the safe sleep functionality which is something that comes as part of the OS, but is only enabled works on the macbook pros (even though there is no hardware limitation which prevents it from being used on the macbooks). However I don't want to get caught up in particulars the basic problem is that my hardware SHOULD be able to burn dual layer discs, but for some reason I can't.
