"did not respond"-i've tried everything

I have been spending the last 2 weeks trying to get the AV to work to no avail. I've spent over 40 hours of my time. As a first time Apple user, I wish I had stayed with XP and saved myself $2500 and lot's of frustration.
How can Apple market this software? There are hundreds of people on this forum experiencing the same problem.
I have Netgeat WGT624v3 connected to a Westell DSL modem in bridge mode and Verizon was my ISP. At home I can only connect to the Apple test buddies.
I have been able to connect from my office and from a friends house, both of which use a different ISP.
My router supports UPnP and it's enabled. I've tried all combinations of settings (portforwarding, disabling SIP firewall, DMZ, turning UPnP on/off several times).
I've added the iChat ports to the OS X firewall, I've set the Quicktime streaming speed to the correct setting. I have my Airport TCP/IP settings set to manual.
I have tried connecting directly to the modem last week and had no luck. That and the fact that everything worked when I connected from work or a friend's made it seemed like Verizon was the problem.
So I switched to DSL Extreme, which was activated today. I've now spent 4 hours trying everything again.
I tried connecting directly to the modem (bypassing the Netgear router) once again and was surprised to get it to work. So now it seems like the router is the problem
I went back and retried everything with the router again but can't get iChat to connect to anything but Apple. When I take the router out of the chain, iChat works fine.
I don't know what else I can do except to return the router and try another one. I'm on hold for the past hour trying to get to Netgear support. I'm a few days past my 30-day return period with Best Buy so I don't know how difficult it will be to return it.

Best Buy let me return my Netgear wireless router (WGT624v3) without a problem.
I had been looking at Apple document 93333, which lists compatible routers for iChat. Best Buy didn't have the Belkin F5D5231-4 but they did have the F5D7231-4 and I figured since it's only off by one number (5 vs. 7) and Belkin seems to be pretty Apple friendly, I'd give it a shot.
Took it home and finally, after 2 weeks and 40+ hours, I got iChat AV to work from my house while on my wireless router. Here are the settings I used:
1. Open the ports on the OS X firewall as indicated in Apple document 93280. I named mine iChat AV.
2. Set System Preferences/Quicktime/Streaming to the maximum download speed of my ISP. I did not use the default Automatic setting.
3. Set System Preferences/Network/Airport TCI/IP settings to Manually as indicated at www.portforward.com.
4. Although the portforward.com instructions for this Belkin for iChat instructs to do the portforwarding thing, this step is not necessary since the Belkin supports UPnP. However it comes with UPnP defaulted to Disable. So you need to go into the router settings and set UPnP to Enable.
5. After this, I was able to AV chat with Ralph and Tony. Thanks to both of you for your admirable support on this forum.
Do not use a Netgear WGT624v3 router. I spent two weeks trying to get it to work and went so far as to switch ISPs only to find the router was the problem. The Belkin F5D5231-4 at Best Buy is actually $10 cheaper and it will save you countless hours of frustration.

  • How can I delete purchases from my itunes account that I DID NOT PURCHASE I have tried everything for a VERY LONG TIME please please help

    I have had an iTunes account for 3 years. I have tried for at least two years to delete these purchases that I did not purchase off my iTunes downloads. I have tried everything. I took iTunes off my computer, redownloaded . I have tried deleting and removing them. I do not know how they got there but everytime I go to download anything these 8 purchases start to download. I then have to pause them all and back to the agganizing termoil of trying to delete them off my account. Can you please please help meI am beyond aggrevated because nothing I do deletes these things off, and I have tried for two years with no results but more aggrivation.

    I would contact Apple Support either on the phone or via e-mail and have them check if they could remove these questionable purchases off your account.
    There is currently no way to do this on your own.
    And re-installing iTunes does not help as all the purchase info is stored on Apple's servers.

    Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom
    Hello joejoe186, any luck if you boot the computer in [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-hk/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows Safe mode with network support] (press F8 on the boot screen) ?
    (If works in Windows Safe mode then probably you have problem with other software, like security software or maybe a system driver, that is running on your computer).
    thank you
  • "did not respond"
    I am a new iMac user. I can connect with someone in the States and with the Apple test connection without any problems. I got the "User did not respond" message when trying to connect with someone in Israel. My firewall is off. We use a Comcast cable modem. I called Comcast and they have no issues recorded in their database with IChat.
    We have a Netscreen 5GT firewall. I am assuming that because we connected fine here in the States and with the Apple test site that my ports are open. Is that a correct assumption?
    thanks!
    Hi Sandy,
    When adding Buddies you do need to Add then as the
    right type of Acount.
    When this is Done with the Add Buddy button/menu at
    the Bottom of the Buddy list you do not have to Add
    the @mac.com bit as it is added for you.
    However if Editing the Addres Card in iChat with
    Apple key + i keys (Get Info) then you do have to
    type the @mac.com to change an AIM name into a .mac
    one.
    Having a succesful chat is not always indicative of
    complete onward success.
    Your IT guys should have enabled ports 5190, 5060,
    5678, 16384-16403 to allow iChat to work.
    Better succes can be had with the appleu3testxx
    accounts maily because of their connection speeds to
    the internet.
    Hi Ralph,
    After much searching in the firewall interface I found the place to enable ports. I need more info. Each port must be identified as TCP or UDP. I also need to know if it is a source or destination port and then under those categories I need to fill in high or low. I am assuming that will indicate a range if necessary. Please correct me if I am wrong. I have a paper copy of this page in the firewall interface and I could scan it and email it if necessary.
    Thanks for all your help
  • User did Not respond issues!! Please help, tried everything...
    Hi,
    I'm having some problems with the whole Audio/Video chat option on Ichat. I'm trying to connect to my girlfriend who also is running on Mac. When we try to connect, it says, "USER NAME, did not respond".
    I've read almost every post on this thing, and seems that the solutions either don't work, or are specific to router/modem setups.
    Now, just as a test to ensure it is from my end, I got my mom... who has an new Intel Imac to connect to my girlfriend, and their video sessions worked fine... so something is wrong with my end for sure.
    I have 2 macs, an Imac and a Macbook pro, and they both experience the same problems, they are running on an Airport Extreme, and our service is through Bell Sympatico, which is a DSL service. I am using a Speed Stream 5200 modem.
    Now both computers are running wirelessly, and I've tried different things like only having one computer connected... hardwiring the computer and even connecting one of the computers directly to the modem... all configurations didn't work. I've also turned off any firewall settings, and unchecked the Distribute IP address option in my airport.
    Personally I believe there is an issue with my ISP or modem, and not sure where to go from here.
    Please if you have any solutions get back to me through this, or through IChat directly my user name is: [email protected]
    Thanks so much
    Kosta
    Dear Stakis,
    You are very welcome. As you might have noticed this discussionforum has been redisigned with profound and intelligent architectural troubleshooting design. I'm sure you will find an answer because all problems are directed towards narrowing down the possible problem and direct you forward to your best way to address your configuration in a way that has the biggest change of successfuley solving your problem. Some peers have been thinking in a very analitical way and almost build a verbal software support applet
    Regarding your trouble. You ran your Ichat behind a router and used the book Pro to host the iChat traffic. I think you should use the iMac to have the router pointforward to as first terminal to regulate iChat traffic. You can use bonjour to have your bookpro chat with the outside world as a network computer using the imac as ichat traffic controller. I noticed you run games on your bookpro . The output you pasted in your reply indicates that your Probook will get in trouble since the code for Xvid is meant for your iMac and your probook needs the universal version.
    QuickTime/XviD_Codec-r58 (ppc).component/Contents/MacOS/XviD.
    IT should be: QuickTime/XviD_Codec-r58 (intel).component/Contents/MacOS/XviD. (not available yet but comming very soon)
    This might cause trouble that destabilises your computer set up and indicates the iMac is the one that is first in line to iChat and your pro is not able.
    Any way you might wonder, what is all this and why this hassle? Basicaly it is something that happened years ago when OSX 10.3.9 was updated to xcode and a simple routine was replaeced by a newer and importand for future addressing compatibility of account/password/id in the future. Apple changed its policy of two account/password/id per user into one. Remember the two different passwords long ago? Well a smart move but badly implented because a lot of developers had the old routine implemented in their personal lybraries and toolkits and did not take notice to replace the old string by the new one wich was paramount to x10.4 account/pas/id addressing. This problem first came to light in mail, there were very strange and inconsistent account and ip malfunctions which where unexplainable at the time. IT took an enormous effort to get a work arround this problem. Especially since it was not analised to the bit. Anyway, this is the cause of suddendeath of iChat inititiation a/v functionality and the did not respond issue. The information to make the connection is inconsistend to the hard/software of the wireless functionality. AIM is also to blame. They chose the easy way out and get the bill now.
    There are some more (not so relevant) issues as time will solve them (quicktime codec h264).
    So please read the new discussionboard trouble shooting pages and i am pretty sure you'll be iChatting (2 way only for now) withing no time thanks to the men who had the patience to allow Apple some time for a fix and kept peers iChatting all over the world with almost individual counseling.
  • Please help me with this 'did not respond' problem.
    So, I too have this same old 'user did not respond' problem. I know there are lot of similar problems but this was the last thing left to do – post here. So, audio and video are not working.
    My setup:
    ADSL-line -> A-Link RoadRunner 44E –modem --(wired)--> Airport Express –(wireless)--> My PowerBook
    More information about the modem can be found here: http://www.a-link.com/uk/RR44.html?id=H4phxx3p
    A-Link:
    IP = 10.0.0.2
    Subnet = 255.255.255.0
    NAT = Enabled (only way to get AirTunes to work)
    Firewall = Disabled
    Port forward = Disabled (tried it but no difference)
    DHCP = Enabled 10.0.0.3-10.0.0.99 Subnet 255.255.255.0
    UPnP = Don’t have it
    Airport Express:
    IP = 10.0.0.3
    Subnet = 255.255.255.0
    NAT = Disabled
    DHCP = Disabled
    PowerBook (10.4.4):
    IP = 10.0.0.22 (using dhcp)
    Subnet = 255.255.255.0
    Firewall = Off (On or off no difference. Yes, I added all the necessary ports)
    QuickTime Streaming Speed is set to match my Download
    iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit is set to NONE
    Tried 10.4.4 combo installer but no luck.
    Everything else works (Internet, Skype, AirTunes…) and I can text chat in iChat. I don’t know what else to try anymore . By-the-way this has worked with these same settings one time before, then it went dead. Don’t understand…
    I tried to connect and this is what /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7 had to say (looong and some is in finnish):
  • 'User did not respond' - Has something changed with ichat?
    This seems to be an issue for nearly everyone. I have been using ichat video succesfully for over a year now. For some reason, in the last month or so, the video has stopped working on all three of my macs (powerbook G4 Tit, new mbpro, and imac g5 at home)
    From my tibook (10.3.9)...I can sucessfully connect to the apple test video without problem. The person I am trying to videochat with can also connect to the same apple test video with no problem. However, we cannot chat with video OR audio with each other.
    I have done a bandwidth test, and I am on a 1.5 T1. I am behind a company NAT (cisco 1700 router, Novell server handling the nat/pat) He is in LA and has succesfully be chatting with people on the east coast, so I don't think he is the issue.
    Here is the log from the connection doctor:
    As it has been for nearly everyone else on the list, I am extremely frustrated. I have never had an issue using ichat, but now I can't get it to work from anywhere. I have been able to get everyone in my family to switch to imacs so they can chat with my kids....and now we can't get it to work at all.
    What am I missing? I find it hard to believe that this is so hard to use that so many people are not able to use it.
    Any help or new suggestions would be most appreciated.
    sqe
    I'm new to Macs and bought a MacBook Pro for myself and partner mostly for the iChat AV feature. Neadless to say, I'm frustrated beyond belief. I've spent over 25 hours trying to get it to work to no avail.
    Each of us can connect with the Apple test buddies with no problem. We can't connect with each other though, except for two times that it actually worked.
    I've troubleshooted everything I can think of. I've called my ISP (Verizon), Netgear (my wireless router), and just this morning I called Apple. I was at work so, I'll have to call them back when I get home but they don't seem to even know about the problem. Which is astonishing considering how many people are reporting this on the forum.
    I can connect to anyone while on my office wi-fi but only to the Apple test buddies when at home. That's why I called my ISP and Netgear. I took the router out of the picture and still had the same problem at home.
    It makes no sense that the Apple test buddies do work but not real people.
  • User did not respond (not another one!!!)
    Hello, I recently purched a Macbook Pro and I can't get the video chat feature in iChat to work. I have tried all the tutorials, everything to try and get this **** thing to work.
    I have turned my firewall off, changed the port that AIM uses, and just about everthing else that has been recomended. I am cureently using a Linksys WRT54GX2, and I havent changed a think on there. I am trying to connect to a person over AIM. He has a Macbook and a Airport Extreme. We are both getting the "user did not respond" error when we try to connect to each other.
    Hi Masterchief,
    Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
    I understand the WRT45GX2 is a MIMO device.
    There is a problem with these and iChat.
  • Another ichat question:  user (me) did not respond redux
    Hi,
    I have been unable to invite a video chat with someone, getting the 'I' did not respond message. I have tried everything that I can think of:
    changing the port from 5190 to 443 (or whichever is recommended)
    turned off my firewall
    do not use a router
    adjusted QT settings to 1.5 mbps and bandwidth limit to NONE
    The person I am trying to connect with (on a PC using AIM) ends up having to invite me, which may or may not work on the 1st try. Also, when I do the invite, it immediately responds and goes to 'starting chat' and just hangs there for a while until I get the inevitable 'user (me) did not respond' with the option of reporting to apple, which I do everytime.
    I know that I had this problem before and did everything that was needed/recommended, which ended up working in the end, but I am baffled now. Any other ideas? They will be greatly appreciated!!!
    Have a good day!
    Greg
    imac 2.0 intel duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Dave,
    I have a Scientific Atlanta DP2100 series as given through Comcast (my ISP). According to Comcast, once I hook everything up, it is set. I have recently reset it by simply unplugging everything, letting it sit for at least a minute, and then hooking it back up, power, ethernet and cable. It does it's little startup thing, and it theoretically should be good to go. I have talked to Comcast recently, due to internet lags and tv problems, and they have said that though there have been outages around my area (but not directly here), things look good on their end. A few grains of salt with that one!
    For some reason, when I try to access the modems settings via the dns address, it doesn't open that address, so that may be playing a part in it. I am not too knowledgeable on that, so if you have some ideas, that would be great.
    Thanks,
    Greg
  • "I did not respond" due to 10.4.6 update-confirmed
    We have 2 PowerBooks on a DSL connection via Airport Express. Mine was updated to 10.4.6 and the other is still on 10.4.5. Immediately after the update, I was no longer able to have video or audio chats with other users (text chats still function)—I get the dreaded "I did not respond" error. The other PB can still initiate and accept video/audio chats no problem. I have seen lots of other posts here about this problem, and it seems that most advice tends to suggest checking modem connections and settings, etc. But in my case it's clear what the problem is: 10.4.6. IChat was working just fine before the update, and still works fine on the other computer that wasn't updated. Arrrrghh! My best friend just bought an iSight to be able to video chat with me, and I've been stuck for 2 weeks unable to chat!
    I'm with disconnekt.
    This used to work just fine, why am I spending HOURS troubleshooting something that worked flawlwssly before the 10.4.6 update?
    I too can not talk to my children now.
    I work on the road a lot and this is very annoying.
    Everything was great before the 10.4.6 update.
    There have been no other changes made at my home or at the office where I work, so it has to be the update.
    Will Apple please at least cop to the problem and tell us that they're working on it?
    BTW, I tried reinstalling with the 'combo updater' and that did nothing but waste more of my time.
  • "[myself] did not respond": iChat 3 iChat 2
    Hello,
    A very simple disapointement : when upgrading to Tiger, my iChat 3 stopped working behind my DSL router :
    I have 2 macs :
    - a Panther (10.3.9) iMac G4, iChat 2.1 that works perfectly fine, audio, video, everything, connected to my DSL modem/router (no firewall, no fancy NAT rules, nothing)
    - a Tiger-upgraded (10.4.5) Powerbook G4 17", connected by airport to the same modem/router (it's got a wifi broadcast), that reproducibly refuses any iChat AV connection. When I call my buddy, it says that "[myself] did not respond" or "refused the connection". This is plain stupid, as I called him myself! I mean, how could I answer the call when I'm calling ?
    The modem/router is a French Freebox v3 (one of the most common ones here). No UPnP available, sorry.
    I have spent the whole day trying to find a solution without success.
    Before I downgrade back to Panther, anybody could help ?
    I could redirect the iChat ports (5060, 5190, 16xxx, etc.) to my Powerbook, but I still want to use both my computers for iChat.
    A note: if I VPN from home to my university network, iChat 3 accept to call my buddy there.
    Hi Sylvian,
    Actually, if you look carefully on page :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208
    ...you'll see they extended the last set (16xxx-) to 16384-16834 instead of -16403.
    Have you actually looked at that Doc since Feb 8th ?
    That was the day that Apple posted the correction I asked for.
    As far as I am aware the Freebox has no problem with SIP.
    Can you tell me if it has Alcatel Firmware as this might indicate that it has ?
    Tentative d’envoi du message SIP "invite" UDP aux adresses IP et ports suivants :
    134.xxx.xxx.87:5060, 134.xxx.xxx.250:5060
    This bit shows me that your are connected to the modem with no other device and the modem is set in Bridge mode which means all it's ports are open.
    EDIT: Can I clarify the bit after that error log from the COnnection Doctor ?
    You say the first is your Work IP.
    Do you mean this is the Public IP ?
    Or do you mean this is a number issued on your LAN ?
    IF you open Sytem Preferences > Network.
    Select the connection method to your Modem in the second drop down.
    Select the TCP/IP tab if it is not already.
    Does this list those numbers ?
    The second .250 should be your IP and the other should be the "router" IP further down and will be the ISP server that issues you your Public IP.
    The fact that it shows port 5060 at the end on both IPs means that the problem is from that part to the computer.
    This suggests that port 16384-16403 are not available to make the complete connection.
    That would lead me to say double check the Mac Firewall.
    Go to System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall Tab
    Check if there is any listing for iChat other than the iChat Bonjour one.
    IF there use the Edit button and check that the ports are in the proper lines.
    TCP 5190, 5298, 5220, 5222, 5223 (for AIM, Bonjour and Jabber)
    UDP 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 16384-16403
    IF these, or rather the Bonour and AIM ones were set in Panther they get brought through as TCP.
    You can see this with the IChat Bonjour preset that brings 5297 and 5298 through as TCP ports.
    UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is a setting on many devices that allow the applications on the computer to open the ports when needed.
    From what you post about the Connection Doctor Error Log the modem is set in Bridge mode.
    Can you confirm what your computer's IP is please ?
  • From Panther to Tiger to DID NOT RESPOND
    Hi there:
    My iChat with my bud had been working perfectly when I started out with Panther... then I switched to Tiger. My iChat freaked and we kept getting the "User did not respond." So, not thinking, I reloaded the Panther CD and ended up completely having to restore everything. Everything works fine and we're both still on v2.1 except we still get the "User did not respond" signal. When I check connection doctor, it says it Tried to send UDP SIP "invite" to the following IP addresses and ports: and then it lists two IP addresses - the first does not belong to my friend, the second one is correct and has :5060 after it.
    What should we do? We messed around with our setting with firewalls a bit and need some guidance. We're not "Apple gurus." Think you can help us out?
    Thanks in advance, much appreciated if you can.
