Did opening iphone email delete my emails?

So here's some strangeness.
I use Thunderbird for my email, and have all settings set to NOT delete any emails - leave them on server til I delete, etc. I had a meeting coming up and emailed my client for her phone number. She didnt' reply in time, so I opened the email up on my iphone in case it came through en route to the meeting. After getting back to the office, I turned off the iphone email (rendering the state back to 'inactive').
Upon sitting at my desk and going back to Thunderbird (which was open the whole time) to find an older email, I see that my inbox only has emails from early August til now. I know I didn't delete anything, and was confused where these emails may have gone. Upon further investigation, I can see that the inbox has only 50 emails in it. I open the app on the iphone and see that it states 'show 50 most recent messages'. I figure this must have some connection to what I'm seeing in Thunderbird, but no idea why it affected my laptop email - or my email in general. I change the iphone setting to 200, but nothing changes on the phone or the macbook. I log into my webmail via my host - and there are only 50 emails in my inbox online.
So.. my conclusion is that somehow turning on the iphone email deleted everything that was past the '50 newest message mark'. But this confuses me since I have nothing set to delete, and how can the phone, which I assume is only meant to sync, have the ability to delete right off my server?
Any help would be appreciated. While I'm sure I will be fine (and I have a computer at home I need to check which runs backups) I have no clue why this may have happened at all and if it's reversible.
Cheers,
Dave

If it's a POP3 email account, POP downloads messages from the server and deletes them once downloaded.
POP3 is largely obsolete and it does NOT handle synchronization and access by multiple devices well.
I'm guessing what happened was that you downloaded the contents of the inbox to the phone, which deleted them from the server.
Switch to IMAP if your email provider supports it. If they do not... honestly, I'd find a new email provider.

  • Backspace delete of text in email deletes the email- why. With Lion

I use Mail 5.0 and Mac OS X Version 10.7.1 (Lion). If I open an email and highlight text and go backspace it deleted the email rather than the highlighted text which I think used to be the case.  Is there another way to delete part of the text in an email before forwarding? Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
I too have the requirement to modify the content of the email body. Actually i have created one human task which sends the email notification to the Approver. when I check the email, the body of the email does not contain anything. Both the Information header that we give in the Task form and the task details are coming as an attachment to the email.
Could you please let me know, how we can get the Information header as the content of the email and also to customize the Subject of the email as per the requirement.
    Thanks in advance,
    Siva.

  • Iphone 4 deletes exchange emails if they are read on desktop

My iphone 4 is receiving my exchange emails but as soon as I read the emails on my desktop computer, my phone deletes them.  I do not have Outlook set to view "unread" messages only.  It is set to read all messages.  It was working fine last week until we switched to a new Exchange server.  Three other people in our office have the same iphone 4 and their exchange accounts are working fine.  Same thing happens on my ipad so it has to be an outlook setting somewhere.  Thanks for your help.

    Hello,
I would 1st speak to your corporate IT department maybe there is a setting within outlook that needs to be set, as far as you iPhone I would go into setting>Mail> tap the account in question>advanced there is a delete from server setting there you may want to disable.
    Good Luck!

  • IPhone is deleting home email

I am not signed up for mobile me nor is my wifi turned on and yet when I delete mail from any folder on the phone it is mirrored on my MBP. This never happened with my 3G, any thoughts?
    Thanks, Rick

Being connected or not being connected to an available wi-fi network has nothing to do with this.
Who is the email account provider for this email account?
Is this email account a POP or IMAP account?
If you have more than the account's Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and Trash mailboxes available when accessing the account with the iPhone's Mail app, this means the account is an IMAP account. All server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are kept synchronized with the server with each email client used to access the account.

  • IPhone 5 - deleting individual emails

I have configured my new phone with 3 accounts. At the bottom I see a flag, a folder a box a return arrow and write. If I am scrolling through invididual emails, at first I clicked the box and I had the option of delete, archive and cancel. I deleted some junk. Now, the delete options no longer appears? If I go back to my inbox and click edit at top right, I can click several emails and then select move and trash. That's fine, but when you are scrolling through seeing what's what, it'd be nice to delete right there and I see no option to do that. Phone is one day old.

Nope! No trash can. Tap edit doesn't work. I happen to be in the Gmail account now and I see L to R a flag, folder with a down arrow, a file box, a left pointing arrow and a compose.  Earlier, I could have sworn when I hit the box icon, it had a delete (red) archive and cancel option. Now I only see two. It is as if I deleted my "delete" if that is possible. No trash can. If I go into Outlook Exchange I see the trash can. If I go into "all inboxes" I don't see anything until I tap on one. I get the trash can with Outlook and none with Gmail. Can't tell with iCloud, I don't have anything in there yes. I guess I should try that. It appears to be a Gmail issue.

  • TS3899 My iphone 6 deleted all emails by itself - 3 times.  Help ?

When I check my mail now, I'm never sure there's going to be anything there.  3 times over the last month and a half, I open my mail, and there's zero mail - nothing!  Nada.  Zip.  all my past email messages are all gone.  Bizarre!
It's set up to retrieve from my mail server service as an imap.
If I go ahead an check my mail, it will start retrieving mail from this moment forward.  But it's like there is a toilet flush button that gets pushed, and flushes out all the existing mail.  ?
Anyone have an idea what the H is going on?

Are you using the mail account on other devices as well?

  • Iphone 4s deleting emails from POP server

    Hi,
Does anyone know how i can stop my iphone 4s deleting my emails from the HOTMAIL server when i delete them off the phone?
    Thanks

Yes, they have changed the settings in iOS5
    Check this page: http://windowslivehelp.com/solution.aspx?solutionid=6ae4b9c2-1c01-4e9c-bdc5-12da 8728f4c2
My POP account still has this option, but it's not a hotmail account. Maybe you should set up the IMAP version for hotmail accounts.

  • IPhone is deleting emails automatically

My iPhone is deleting my emails after a certain period of time. I move emails to a folder I have named 'To Keep' for a reason but they are still being deleted. They are on my email account on the computer but don't stay on my phone. Please help.

Go to Settings>Mail, Contact, Calendars. Select the account. Look at "Mail Days to Sync". What does it say?
Messages will be deleted from the phone, but left on the server after the specified time period to conserve space. You can set it to "No Limit" if you want.

  • Email deletion on iPhone and Computer

I have an iPhone 4 and use it at work with my Microsoft Outlook Exchange server. When I delete a message on the iPhone it deletes the email on my computer at work.
Is there a way of keeping the email on the computer without having to keep an unread copy of the email on the iPhone?

Sorry, there is not. Exchange synchronizes the mailboxes of all devices that access email so any changes you make on the phone will be made on the computer and the other way too.

  • How does one delete all emails in iOS 8?

Since there isn't an option to mark all for deletion, I am tired of checking or swiping each individual email to delete.  I tried the technique of marking all read, checking one email, press/hold move button while unchecking, moving what appears to be all my mail selected and watching it slide to the trash; but when I check trash to delete all from there, it's empty and all the mail is back where it was.  HELP!  Am I missing something (I am an iPhone newbie but not a techie neophyte) or did something this simple get overlooked?

There is no option/settings on the iphone to delete all email message.  You would need to go to edit - then select the emails you want to delete.
if you have an imap email account, you can do a mass delete on your computer and it will reflect on your iphone.

  • What app iphone can manage all emails

I am looking for a way to manage my email with my:
    Iphone
    Ipad
    PC outlook
Exemple I am on a business trip and check my email on my iphone and delete 3 email and flag 5 emails
And instany it would do the same at my office on the PC Outlook
    Can any one help

    Hi,
Mail applications work slight different than an app like calendar, but it very easy to manage your mail through all devices/computer.
As Allan stated, you need to have your mail set up as as IMAP or Exchange. If you are using POP for your mail, you cannot easily have all devices managed automatically.
To put it simply, POP Mail is stored locally, so runs independently, where as IMAP and Exchange mail, store the mail on a server, so each device that is connected to it is automatically updated to the same state. Examples of IMAP accounts are iCloud and Gmail, however, most service providers offer IMAP services.
Flagging of mail is currently available on the iPad and iPhone. When you have an email open, touch the Mark link and you are presented with Flag/unflag or Mark/Unmark. If your mail is set up as say IMAP, when you flag a message there, it updates your other devices. I cannot test Outlook as I do not use it, but see no reason why if the mail accounts are running as IMAP or Exchange, why this would not work too.
    Hope this helps

  • "Mass" email deletion?

I have several email accounts within my iPhone. E.g., Gmail: although I have deleted all the email in my Gmail spam folder the iPhone shows 50 some odd emails remaining. Is there a way to do a “mass” deletion of email or must I go through and tap each one, one by one until they are purged from the iPhone?

    Hey starkitty,
The iPhone will delete one email at a time. You don't have to view the email to delete it though, just slide your finger across the subject and then click delete.
