Did some updates yesterday so decided to shut down my computer last night. This morning when I turned if back on it came up with a grey screen and a white box with a picture of the computer that says "setting up your Mac". It's been like this for an hour. The display box shows three check marks but it won't do anything. It's like its in a frozen mode

After updating to mavericks on my MacBook, the screen keeps saying "setting up your mac." It has been like this for hours! How can I make it go faster? It's has been like this for 4 hrs.
I don't think your mac is setting up. It's stuck.
I would:
hold the power button until it shuts down
unplug all peripherals
do a safe boot (restart and hold down the shift key until you see the apple logo).
If it starts up in a safe boot, then you can try restarting with a normal boot.
If it does not start with a normal boot, then you probably have some incompatible third party software. Likely culprits are:
MacKeeper
CleanMyMac
third-party antivirus software
any other "cleaning" or "optimizing" or similar third party "utilities".
A good place to start would be to uninstall any of those (while in safe mode) and then restart. -
I downloaded an album last night from iTunes. This morning i noticed it was in my music on my iPhone. I have the auto Sync turned off. How did this happen?

I took all of my devices in to the apple store in ridge hill in Yonkers, the rep helped me set up the new operating system on all my
Devices from my phone to my desk top tower at home. I powered up my desk top this morning and a message came up saying that
The system did not recognize a program that was not compatible with the new operating system and it went right into "Setting up your Mac"
Mode. Do I have to wait for the setup or is there a way to by pass this process?
Dee BrownI think maybe wait for a bit. Usually, on startup and installing the new OS, the assumption is that the user might not know too much, and that compatibility must be checked, which may be helpful, or not. For now, I'd say ignore it, wait until it's done its thing, then update the program that's not compatible. If you can, Mr. Brown, find out which one isn't "making nice" with Mavericks. Hopefully it'll give you a name

Upgrade successful, but this morning after signing in, Mac has locked up on "setting up your Mac" screen. Ive restarted it, and powered down and started again, but the same thing happens. Help!
I had the same problem and found the answer!
In Outlook, go to the Help menu, then Check for Updates.
I downloaded & updated Outlook, then it upgraded my database, and everything worked out fine for me!
Good luck! -
Hi. My wonderful hubby surprised me with a new MacBook Pro last night (he will be deploying soon and won't be home for the holidays, valentines day, my birthday or our anniversary)! I have a great camera and a TON of photos on my laptop that I don't want to lose. So I downloaded the migration software to my Asus and it starts out just fine and then freezes around the 1 hr and 48 minutes left. I have changed the energy settings so that it doesn't sleep, but still likes to freeze. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the screen saver? Can someone help this new Mac user? I feel like I'm learning a new language!
You have posted to the older PPC iMac forum. You need to poster to a newer iMac forum.
I suggest posting here:

Try double clicking on the harddrive icon on your desktop
You should get something like this.
On the left pane is a list of common places.
All the user data is in the /Users folder.
See the magnifying glass on the upper left of the screen. This is spotlight. Type in a file name.

I have had my Macbook Pro since 2011 and it has been great until now. Suddenly, I can no longer get past the grey screen just after I log in. The grey screen appears with a loading bar, and the bar get 1/4 of the way complete, then the computer shuts off. My power cord seems to be working fine because this problem still occurred after using another power cord (from another Macbook). Keyboard does not light up, and the small green lights on the left side of the computer do not light up (this is an older version and these light indicate how charged the computer is). It is using the OS X Yosemite and recently had total clearing of the hard drive as it was transferring from one owner to another, so the hard drive isn't nearly full enough to be causing this problem. I've never run into this problem before with other Macbooks.
Help!Hi. When you were in the recovery drive doing permissions, did you try and run a repair of the boot drive? Did you try single user mode? Try these first and then go back and try to reinstall the operating system. When I say repair boot drive I don't mean permissions. There are both options in disk utilities. When you open disk utilities ,you will see in the left column two drives plus possibly a boot partition that look like an external driv. click on the second drive and in first aid use repair disk. If you still can't boot and it will not let you restore, you may have to do a clean install. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18869?viewlocale=en_US

My iMac won't boot. I have tried putting my DiskWarrior DVD in and starting the computer holding the "c" key down wihile it is powering up. The DVD started to make encouraging sounds like it was trying to boot from it. Then a grey circle comes on the screen and there is a sound of the DVD attempting to read and failing. Now the DVD is stuck in my computer and I can't get it out.
Any suggestions as to what to do next?Hello mheskin,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Also try this - Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

Amazing the new 27 inch I mac has no built in dVD player. Bit like buying a brand new car and finding it doesnt have any doors.
Great analogy - particularly applicable to folks who would buy a new car without looking at it, never mind taking it for a test drive.

When I open my computer and sign in with my password it opens and says setting up your Mac. But from here it never goes forward and even if I restart I cannot get computer to open
This sounds more like a Windows question, than a Firefox question. When you say that an image shows up every time you open your computer, do you mean every time you turn on your computer, or every time you start Firefox?

Why can't we see the details of a picture or video taken with our iphone or Ipad? Detail like when it was taken the picture or when the movie was filmed. I think that this very very important for our memories.
Yes, I know that, but it was easier to see it on the Iphone self, like the other company phones. The name of the picture taken should be the date when it was taken.

I did this and now my videos are not working. They show the pictures aren't there on some and on others it shows they are there, but doesn't show them in the player. When I try to Share anything it just says Waiting for Processing for hours. What do I do?
I also got Motion and can't figure out how to use it with Final Cut Pro X. Any help woud be great. ThanksI have no idea what may have caused your MacBook to stop working, but from your description it kind of sounds like it may have started before you ran Software Update and installed the new Apps. Just the general slow feeling and bugginess is what tips me off. You said that you weren't sure if you had closed all open windows, that doesn't matter if the computer restarts itself. It automatically closes all other open applications when restarting.
As to your data being retrievable, if when you take it in they do a fresh install of the OS, then no, it will not be unless you want to pay several thousand dollars to a software retrieval company.
I am glad to hear that you have taken into the Apple Store to get it fixed, and that you have all of your purchased music backed up to your iPod. You should be able to just transfer it all back to iTunes once you get your computer back should it be necessary.
As a side note, the proper place for this topic would probably in the MacBook forums, not iTunes since there is no evidence that iTunes started the issue.
