Did windows vista kill my ipod?

I recently bought a new computer with windows vista (which I hate, should have gone with the mac). my ipod has been working fine for a very long time now. when I downloaded the newest version of itunes to my new computer and tried to sync my ipod, the ipod froze up and I havnt been able to get the thing working since. I have rebooted, restored, and everything countless times. I decided to go back to my old computer becasue I never had problems with the ipod in the past. I tried all the same things with my old computer numerous times and still nothing. the ipod is on but completly frozen and everytime I reboot or restore the same outcome. the only time that my ipod is not frozen is when it is in diskmode and I have tried rebooting reinstalling numerous times from this mode and still nothing. I realize that there is a new article on the mac website saying that windows vista can currupt your ipod, but this was put on the website after I had apparently killed my ipod. I miss my ipod, can anyone help me????

I have had the same problem- I recently bought a new Windows Vista laptop and plugged in a new Ipod cLASSIC (80gb). It charged up fine and seemed to working, but when I tried to transfer songs onto it and ejected it from the computer, the Ipod just died. It will not turn off or on, cannot be reset and will not charge either on the computer (I've tried it on various computers)or via the mains charger I have. I took it back to the shop, assuming it was a dodgy Ipod and they replaced it. I am now on my 4th new Ipod and the same thing has happened to all of them (each time I plug them in they just stop working). The guys in the Apple Shop (where I took my laptop and Ipod to checked out) can't work out what is going wrong but seem to think it is my laptop. They did not mention anything about Windows Vista not being compatible with Ipods, so I'm not sure what to do for the best. I am currently using my old laptop wich is Windows XP but am considering investing in a new Apple Mac laptop!!

  • Windows Vista not locating iPod Touch

Hello all! I recently got an iPod Touch and have run into a problem. I tried syncing it on my PC (Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit) and was only able to charge it but not sync it. Later today, I tried syncing the iPod Touch on the other PC which has XP on it and it worked. I have tried several times to do it on the Vista computer but nothing seems to be working. I really need help on how to make it so that Windows Vista finds iPod Touch when I plug it in the USB.

  • Windows Vista wont install Ipod drivers

    OK I NEED HELP....
I have Windows Vista and I am trying to install my iPod Nano, but everytime I plug my iPod in it ask me to insert the CD that came with it. As I don't have a CD I just click to install drivers automatically. Than it gives me an error saying 'unable to install drivers'. The divers do show up in the device manger under- other devices but there is a little warning sign next to it. So I right click on it and update driver, which it then tells me that it can't update driver. I have the latest version on iTunes and Quicktime, and I have also done a restore on my pc. Spoken to Apple 4 times!!! got no where with them. My iPod works fine on Windows XP machine, but not my Windows Vista. Has anyone else had any troubles with Vista??

I'm not sure my problem with Vista is the same. New computer with Vista, and I'm trying to transfer my library from old computer to new one. I loaded latest version of iTunes. When I put in my apple ID, my acct balance and items in my shopping cart appeared. When I connect my iPod, it is recognized.
I found an article that gave two options for copying library to new computer. One was to use backup discs to RESTORE, and the other was to use the iPod as a hard drive. It says that it will ask if I want to restore when I insert backup disc, but it does not ask. I tried Import, but tht didn't work either. When I connect my iPod, it doesn't copy the contents from there either. It only gives me the option of erasing iPod and loading what is on new library (which is only about 12 songs). I get a msg that I am synced to another library and can only be synced to one. I still got that msg after I deauthorized the old one.
Any suggestions on how to load music onto new library?
    Thanks in advance!

  • OH MY GOD....did i just KILL my IPOD?!?!??!

Itunes wouldn't start up, so i tried to disconnect my (2nd version of 5gen) iPod my using the "safely remove hardware" option in windows, like this:
    http://helpdesk.dlsu.edu.ph/images/usb/safelyremovehw.gif
because i thought that i read somewhere that is an alternative way. it didnt disconnect and gave me an error. However when i was able to open itunes, i found that ALL MY VIDEOS were gone, and the little icon representing my ipod showed a 1st gen iPod!!!! So i tried to reconnect and resync all my music and videos, but it wouldnt reload my vids!!! So right now im using the "Restore" option, hopefully this will fix it...so does this do any damage to the iPod? Did i do any permanent damage to the hard drive?
(also, when i opened up itunes, it gave me a message to download 1.5 version of iPod software. is this really new or part of the error?)

There is no version 1.5, it's currently at 1.2.
See what occurs after you have restored it. I doubt you did anything serious to the iPod.
You should also consider changing the iPod drive letter.
Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say 'M' or something similar.
The iPod can be confused by any other storage devices assigned a similar drive letter even though they may not connected at the same time.

  • Windows Vista Crashing When Ipod is Plugged In. Blue Screen of Death?

A week ago, my computer suddenly started to reboot whenever I plugged my 5th generation 80 gig Ipod in to sync. A blue screen will pop up, and automatically restart.
I do not believe this is the blue screen of death that appeared 2 months ago. I have upgraded to Itunes 8.0.1 when it was first released, and I had no problems until a week ago. I haven't heard of anyone receiving the blue screen of death since the update to Itunes 8 was released.
I have also lost all of my music from my Ipod, so I am anxious to figure this out.
Here is what the blue screen (certain passages paraphrased, the specifics were copied directly):
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    BADPOOLHEADER
If this is the firs time you've seen this stop error screen, restart yoru computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Make sure all hardware and software is properly installed
If it continues, disable/remove any newly installed hardware and software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shawoding. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 for Advanced Sartup options, then select safe mode.

Have you tried the troubleshooting advice in this article?

Was a file name mentioned in the stop message? usually something.sys That can be a clue to the problem is the Apple advice doesn't help.

  • ITunes 7.6 will not install on Windows Vista 32-bit (iPod Service problem)

Basically, my story is near-identical to the one here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1572880&tstart=0
EXCEPT that after trying EVERYTHING rmurtagh did, I STILL had no success. Specifically, when I try to install iTunes, I get the error "Service 'iPod Service' (iPod Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." and when I try to change anything using services.msc, I get the error, "The system cannot find the file specified." PLEASE HELP!!

when I try to change anything using services.msc, I get the error, "The system cannot find the file specified." PLEASE HELP!!
Are you getting that if you try to manually restart the iPod Service in Services.msc?
If so, do you get an error message number with the message? If so, what number is it?

  • Did Windows XP kill my machine?

    OK...
I'm a pretty Mac savvy guy. I've owned both Windows and Mac machines all my life... and I just ran into a problem that has really floored me....
Last night I went to install Windows XP Professional using Boot Camp on my Mac Mini. It seemed like a pretty basic process so I guess I wasn't paying too much attention. I formatted my partition, popped in my XP disc, and got all the way to where the installer restarts the computer.
    Then Disaster.
I get the famed error "Disk Error Press any key to restart" after the line asking me to press any key to boot from a disc.
    Then nothing.
I read that this happens when your XP disc doesn't give you the option to reformat the partition or something. That's fine. But I have another really serious problem.
Nothing works. No keys, no startup discs, no nothing. No key combinations will bring up a choice of boot disc, verbose mode, target disk mode, or anything. I have tried booting with an XP and Leopard disc in the actual DVD drive on the Mac Mini and a USB DVD drive. Discs that go in the machine's drive will not come out and the computer has to be cracked open to extract the disc.
With the Leopard disc in the external it spins and thinks for about 15 minutes and then eventually goes to the same "disk error" message.
I can't get it to go back to OSX. I am positive that I didn't overwrite my main partition. Even if I did, I should still be able to boot with my OSX disc or at least go into Verbose mode... right?
The machine has been running fine for over a year. It has no garbage on it and I haven't done any updates recently...
    What can I do?

Got the same problem after I unfortunately choose the default option for Windows Setup ('Leave the current file system intact').
Got the message 'Disk Error - Press any key to restart'.
Happy to find this topic. But no 'old USB mac keyboard' at hand, being a newbie in Appleland.
However, after loosing a few more hair I found a helpful entry in the small booklet that came with the new MacBook ('Everything for the Mac' section 4 'Problem Solving'): Swith on the MacBook with the on/off button and immediately press the following 4 keys together (during about 15 seconds or so) until you hear the startup signal for the second time:
    Command + Option + P + R
According to the booklet this will reset the parameter RAM .... and everything works fine again!!!
Don't forget to choose NTFS or FAT for Windows Setup and read the Boot Camp Instalation Guide Step 2 for more details.

  • Vista killed my ipod?

    hi there,
I have a Powerbook G4, a WinXP SP2 PC and a Vista PC. My iPod photo was previously mac formatted, but because I wanted to test Vista I reformatted it on the Vista machine.
Unfortunately, before Apple issued the warning, I removed the ipod from Vista through the system tray.
Now I can't get either the mac or the winxp sp2 machines to recognise the ipod at all.
My most fervent wish is simply to restore the ipod and use it with the mac machines.
What can I do? Is my ipod broken for ever?
    Cheers,
    Renai

    see doing the following helps
    1. Put your iPod into disk mode
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    2.For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
