Did you upgrade ram at an Apple store...??

my quest to upgrade my mini G4's ram to 1 gig continues.
after numerous calls to the apple store in SoHo and on 5th i was told to just "bring it in" the the store on 5th ave (the soho store being nice enough to tell me they were out of stock on PC3200 RAM -- as it is "so totally old" (their quotes, not mine.)
so i get to the apple store on 5th and am told to proceed to the genius bar for consultation/upgrading. i get to the genius bar and am told that all the slots are filled for the day and have to wait till midnight to make another appointment, even if i want that appointment to be at midnight!
i'm obviously upset. having trecked, not a fantasticly long way, but a pretty long way, in crappy weather, just to have this upgrade done as my bf has a project to do in Flash and would really benifit from having the extra ram this weekend.
so i politely ask what i can do to have the upgrade done today, as i don't want to have to come back, etc etc etc.
i get directed to the cashier line. aparently if i simply buy a stick of ram, they would install it for me for $30 dollars. fair enough -- i was already told over the phone that i would be charged $30 labor and that the whoe thing would be around $200 including the ram.
i get to the cashier, tell her what i need, and she disappears to the back for about 15 minutes and comes back and tells me that they are out of stock on the PC3200 sticks (and makes that fantastic coment mentioned early on in this post.) she then tells me that i might just order it online.
she shows me a list of ram sticks on her iMac screen and points to one that retails for $300.00.. my jaw drops. i can't see much of the specs, but it is PC3200 ram as far as i can see.. and its beyond expensive.
i wish her well, and walk out (well actually i walk around a bit looking for thew MB Pro Core2s, but that dismal experience is for another post enirely.)
so fast forward to right now, and, wanting to link this post to the $300 ram i was shown at the apple store, i poked around the online apple store and found this:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/1.RSLID?nclm= 564A0BD5
i would get a 10% student discount regardless of what apple ram i chose, but obviously $200 is a lot cheaper then $300!
it really phases me every time i see that the people at the apple store are never on the ball. i paid extra money for apple care which means i expect apple to be able to support me (including answering all of my questions) for at least the 3 years that i paid support for. (last time i checked the apple support website, i was still covered under apple care for another 542 days)
in the end i think i am just going to install the ram stick on my own. i already found a modefied putty knife online and its on its way, and i ordered a PC2700 1 gig stick from Newegg as soon as i got back from the apple store.
i'm really tired of this greif. not so much that they were out of stock on the ram -- although i wish they new enough to tell me over the phone like at the SoHo store -- but when they told me the stick would cost $300, it shut me down.
this lil mini is on its way to early retirement, what with a MB Pro Core2 and a 26 inch iMac purschase scheduled for the next few weeks (which i am actually rethinking given the awful experience i had at the apple store last night)
by incorrectly telling me the ram was $300 instead of $200 they helped me make a choice i wouldnt have made if i know the correct price. i would have ordered the ram online and taken it in for installation. it bothers me because it makes me realise that trips to the apple store are useless.
its a shame -- really.
so i'm here venting but also wondering about the experienes you guys have had trying to upgrade the ram at the apple store at some point after the original purhase date. $300 for Ram? c'mon! that's the price of half an entire mini!
would love to know if any of you guys had a more seamless exprience trying to upgrade your ram at the apple store and if any of you had any luck getting them to install 3rd party ram for you.
thanks in advance for taking the time to reply and for indulging me while i vent.

Apple does charge a premium for memory. There must be quite a few other Apple Authorized Service Providers in New York City who can sell you a RAM chip and install it for you while keeping your warranty. You don't have to go to the Apple retail store.

No, Apple does not do trade ins. Sell the iPhone 4s yourself and use
the money received from the sale toward an iPhone 5.

I backed up my iphone 4 and did an upgrade and changed my Apple ID and password but my phone has not recognised the new ID to upgrade my apps via the iphone.  How do I get rid of the old Apple ID when it comes to upgrading apps.
I have been into setting>store and signed out and signed back in and it still asks for old ID and password.

Everything you've had up to now has been tied to your old Apple ID. You cannot switch it over to a new Apple ID. You should contact iTunes support to help you with this:

    1. first try to reboot your ipad
if that don't work then try downloading another app don't matter which one
and if it fix your problem you can just delete it afterwards

  • Does the Apple store give you the Verizon upgrade discount, Does the Apple store give you the Verizon upgrade discount

Does the Apple Store give you the Verizon upgrade discount/

Absolutely not. I've confirmed this both with an brick-and-mortar Apple Store employee by phone and via chat with an online Apple Store representative. Instead, they will tell you that 'some people have called Verizon after buying the phone at the Apple Store and received the discount as a credit toward their bill. Verizon, however, flatly denies this is the case and refuses to transfer the upgrade discount to a bill. Verizon claims that you can receive the upgrade discount only by purchasing an iPhone from a Verizon corporate store or from their website.

  • How do you close updated apps from apple store

    HI
I have just upgraded to ISO7 and was wondering how do I clear any apps that I have upgraded through the Apple Store.
    Many thanks
    Steve

What do you mean by "clear"?
Have a look here: iOS 8: App Store Updates Do Not Clear
If it is the badge count that does not fit, it might be that iTunes is the cause (12.0.1.26).

  • HT1349 how come Apple Apps are sometimes complete rubbish and do not work - do Apple not check what you can buy in the Apple store?

I have just bought a thermometer on Apple Store and it is useless - do Apple not check the apps they sell?  I had to pay for this one.

Take it up with the developer. Apple did not make the app.
Yes, Apple does have a screening process or else there would be floods of scams. When you get your email receipt, click the Report a Problem link, follow the steps and say the item was not as described (depending on how you define "useless"). Sometimes a bad one slips through.

  • When you drop/crack your iPhone 5, and you take back to an Apple store can you get another color of iPhone with your insurance?

I want to know because I have a black iPhone 5 with insurance, and I was wondering if I ever broke it and went to an Apple Store would they give me a new iPhone but a white one. Thanks appreciate it

No. First of all Apple doesn't provide insurance what they provide is a warranty. As soon as you dropped your iPhone the warranty was void.
If you wish you can take it to Apple for a replacement which will be exactly the same color as the one you currently have. You will be charged for the replacement.

  • How do you switch to the Canadian apple store

I live in Canada and I wanted to get an app you can only get in the USA, so I switched to the American apple store and tried to buy it.. Then it said I have to switch to the Canadian apple store to get it but when I do I can't get the app!! How can I get the app??

You can only purchase items from the country's store in which you are located and your account, including the payment method has to be associated with that country. Apple checks the public IP address used by the iPod/computer to determine the country in which you are located.

  • I just bought ipod 5 on ebay and the seller did not know passcode can the apple store fix this problem

i just bought a ipod on ebay and seller does not know passcode if i go to the apple store can they fix my problem?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
The previous owner still has to remove the device from their account in order for you to activate the iPod.

  • Upgrading my iPod at Apple Store?

I heard from a friend that I am able to trade my iPod (32GB, 4th Gen) with a new one at a discounted price at an Apple Store. Is this true? If so, how much of a discount will it be?

Apple does not buy back or have a trade-in program. They do still recycle old iPod's and will pay you a 10% store credit toward the price of a new iPod. You would be better off to wipe / unlock (remove you from the iPod so the new owner can use it) and sell it outright , then use that money to purchase a new iPod. Hope this helps. Cheers.
