Did Your CODEC Utility Say That Adobe/MainConcept CODEC's Were Broken?

You've just run G-Spot, Sherlock the CODEC Detective, or another CODEC utility, and get all sorts of pink or red notations on your Adobe/MainConcept CODEC's, reporting that they are broken, or corrupted. Scary, huh?
What you see in those pink or red highlighted entries are "false positives". Adobe uses a slightly different naming convention for its CODEC's (all MainConcept here), to protect them from being replaced, or corrupted by other programs. Many other programs, like CODEC "packs" will go into one's computer and replace good, commercial CODEC's with hacked, free versions. Sometimes this works OK, but often things just do not work as well after the CODEC pack. By hiding them, there is far less a chance that they will be messed up by another program. Unfortunately, this naming convention is not understood by most CODEC utilities, like G-Spot, or Sherlock the CODEC Detective. They see the correct link to the CODEC in Registry, but cannot find it in the system folders. Hence, they report that there is a problem. This has been heavily documented in the fora, but usually within thread on another problem. This means that the casual user, even with a Search, might not turn up the info. It's too bad that those utilities have not been rewritten to find the Adobe/MainConcept CODEC's, or that they do not have an info message, telling their users that all is really OK.
Hope that this lets you sleep better, and saves your trying to reinstall your Adobe video editing program. That is not necessary.
One thing that CAN happen, even with the naming convention to hide the CODEC's is that other programs, or CODEC "packs" can alter the OS's priority of the CODEC's, effectively telling the system to use another CODEC, other than the Adobe/MainConcept ones, for certain AV files. This can mean that your fully functional Adobe MainConcept CODEC's are down the list, and you're dealing with some hacked, or reverse-engineered version, rather than the commercial version, that was included in your Adobe program. This often goes totally unnoticed, but can also cause issues. The cure for this is to edit the Registry, but this is not for people, who do not know exactly what they are doing. I will not go into the process of this, as anybody, who does know how to safely hack their Registry will know how to do this, but anyone, who does not know what to do, should not attempt to do it - things can go very wrong and in a hurry. Those people would be better off just doing a Repair Installation of the Adobe program, and let that rewrite the entries in the Registry.
Good luck,
Hunt

I can't open the psd file I did yesterday! It says that the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop. I worked in a CS6 version but also tried opening in a CC but nothing happens. Help
    more info:
    Photoshop never crashed or anything.
I was working in my school's mac but running windows, and the file was being saved in the school's network not on the computer. I thought it had been saved and I also copy and pasted the file in my hard drive to guarantee a copy but none of the are opening.
The file size was appox. 1giga
    Thanks a lot

The problem was saving over the network. Working across a network is not supported.
This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.  It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Hello I have downloaded new version of flash player and it says that adobe wants to make changes when I insert password it does not like it?

when installing new version of adobe flash it says that adobe wants to make changes it has my name already inserted and when put password it docent accept it

thank you but where do I get systems administrator and password from?

  • Programs like VIMEO say that adobe flash player isn't installed but it is isntalled

several videos try to play but say you have to install adobe flash player but I Have it installed in firefox. I look at the apps and its there and not disabled.

There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash:
*an '''ActiveX version''' for IE only
*a '''Plugin version''' for most other browsers including Firefox
*On a Windows system, you should always update both individually.
'''''You do not appear to have the Plugin version for Firefox installed. ''''' If you did, in Add-ons > Plugins you would see "Shockwave Flash ''(version)''". If "Shockwave Flash" is there and is disabled, click the "Enable" button.
Check your Plugins often --> http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
*only the most popular/used Plugins are known by this page
*page will detect only installed, '''''enabled''''' Plugins
    '''<u>Install or update Adobe Flash</u>'''<br />
#'''<u>Using Firefox</u>''', go to the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop so you can find it later. Un-check any items on that page that you do not want to download (i.e., "McAfee Security Scan Plus":
#When the download is finished, close Firefox (File > Exit '''''OR''''' Firefox button > Exit)
#Click or double-click on the file you just saved to your desktop
#*In the installation window that appears, click the box to the left of "I have read and...." to place a check mark in the box
#*The "Install" button in the lower right corner will now be highlighted, click it.
    #*The installation is quick.
#Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
#To update/install the ActiveX version for IE '''''only''''', repeat the process, '''<u>but use IE to go to the above website</u>'''.

Not related to your question, but...
You may need to update some plug-ins. Check your plug-ins and update as necessary:

  • After updating to the new version of Firefox, then the Adobe update, when I startup firefox again it says that adobe needs my premision to do something then the GetPlus + (R) crashes. Why?

I just updated to the new version of Firefox, then updated the Adobe flash as suggested by Firefox, but when ever I open Firefox again it says Adobe needs my permission to do something then it says that the GetPlus + (R) has crashed and apparently Adobe never fully updates. Is this a huge problem? If so how do I fix it??
    Thanks
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I updated to the new Firefox, then updated the Adobe flash player as Firefox suggest.

    Hi Charles,
You can just download the direct installer for Flash.
*Save this link to your computer: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe
    *Close Firefox
*In Control Panel -> Programs and Features, uninstall any Adobe Download Manager, GetPlus, or similar entries.
    *Also uninstall Flash.
*Then run the install_flash_player.exe you downloaded earlier.
That should get Flash working again (check that it is listed under Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins)
See also [[Managing the Flash Plugin]]

  • On Mac OS X snow leopard, when I quit firefox 4, all the app tabs I set up get deleted. Is that suppose to happen? on your website it says that when you close firefox and reload the browser the app tabs should be there on start up?

When I close the firefox browser but I do not quit the program entirely, the app tabs remain as I had originally set them up.
But when I fully quit firefox. All the app tabs I set up are gone and I have to set them up all over again every time.

Here's what happened in safe boot mode.
I click on apple logo > software update > see's that Super Drive 3.0 is checked > click install
I wait for the install to go through.
First pop up says " There was a problem installing this update" Quit all apps before installing bla bla bla... I noticed a sound when this pop up appeared. It's the sound of when you restart the macbok. There is another popup behind this saying that software update has been sucessfully installed.
So what I did first was click "quit" on the popup saying "There was a problem installing this update".
then I clicked "ok" where it said that the software installation update was successfully installed.
I get another pop up which is the Software Update window. I let it look for any updates and it then says that my software is up to date. I noticed that Super Drive 3.0 is listed and cannot be checked [x]. There's a Check mark with a green circle around it.
I quit the software update window and click on apple logo > software update and let it do its thing. Next thing you know, It says that Super Drive 3.0 needs to be updated. I also checked the SERIAL ATA and still shows rev. CP06.
I just recently installed this mac os X so there is no "important" data on this laptop. I don't have any money for OS Lion or Mavrick nor meet the system req to run it. 2gb to 4gb is expensive for a ddr2 800 200 pin ram

  • Just got a new iMac. I am using CS5.5, everything except InDesign is working. I can't open it. When I try to run the installer it says that "Adobe Suppor Advisor is no longer in use". I am then led to the online site for 'help', but I can't find anything

I transferred everything over with an ethernet cable. All my apps are working... Photoshop... Illustrator... InDesign won't though.

adobe products are especially prone to problems when 'migrated'.  they should be properly install using the installation files.

Why does adobe close after a few seconds when i open a pdf?  It has worked fine for a year on this computer.
