Diferent Docks on Diferent Spaces

OK I have never thought about any use for myself for spaces I think is a great technology and I am pretty sure that lots of people use it.
Today I stated using it, because I want some stuff that I want to keep to myself (not ****) and make a switch between one screen to the other and I thought about opening another user account and I was reminded about spaces.
So I started to play around and it does do what I want it to do, but I have an issue, and here is my question.
Different spaces allow me to separate different programs to work on, but what about the dock, how can I set it up so an application shows up on one dock and not on the other when is open.
Can it be done?
I want an application to be open on space one, but I don;t want it open on space 2 and I don't want it to be on the dock either.

no, there is no such option in spaces. but there may be some 3rd party tools that simulate this kind of behavior. Dock Spaces seems to be able to do it but I've never tried it myself

  • Hide dock in certain Spaces?

I use VMWare to run Windows, unfortunately, in Mac OS X Leopard for some web apps that require IE.
I was just thinking it would be nice to be able to hide the dock for the Space I have assigned to VMWare to reduce the clutter in that Space. No preference is immediately apparent to me in System Preferences to do this. Curious if anyone else has thought of this and if there is a solution, Terminal or otherwise, that might accomplish this.
    Cheers!

this is definitely impossible right now. You can request that apple add this feature here:

  • Possible Simultaneous Corruption in Dock, Exposé and Spaces?

I upgraded to 10.5 a couple of weeks ago, and it was running smoothly, save for some Time Machine issues, until yesterday morning. I woke my computer up and exposé would no longer work--none of my F quick keys were functional, I couldn't Tab+~ to cycle through applications, nothing. Spaces also shut down (or more correctly, the menu bar icon said that I had not yet enabled Spaces even though I had been using it the entire time I've had Leopard), but the Dock was acting even stranger.
I normally keep my Dock at the bottom of the screen and hidden, but since yesterday I can neither hide nor show it at will. I can't change the side it's on, and now it randomly shows itself (it's come up at least 3 times since I've been writing this), but either disappears when I try to click on it, or seems frozen for a second and then vanishes. I've been able to launch one application--Safari--one time from the Dock in two days. I can't make changes to the Dock, or Spaces or Exposé, for that matter, through System Preferences.
I've deleted the Dock preferences several times, run disk utilities several times, started in Safe mode, turned off all my peripherals, reinstalled my Waccom driver (out of pure desperation) and done a clean reinstall of Leopard, but so far nothing has worked. Disk utilities says everything is fine, and though I've run into the same problems repairing my permissions that others here have found--the LONG run time, the barber pole without progress, the weird messages--it seemed to have worked okay.
I can manually launch programs from the Applications folder, and they seem to be working pretty well when they are launched. The only thing that I've noticed that could be out of the ordinary, though I don't know, is that when I delete the Dock preferences--both com.apple.dock.db, and com.apple.dock.plist--another file, com.apple.dock.db-journal, will flash every so often, though not necessarily when the dock reappears.
(right this second half the dock peeked up, disappeared and then after a beat, appeared fully and disappeared again--in roughly the same amount of time it took me to write this sentence).
As you can probably guess, by now I'm desperate and completely out of ideas. Does anyone have any insight?
    Thanks.

Can't find the edit button, so I'll add two things onto the list:
    7. Terminal - sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
    8. Reinstalling OS X
    ...and nothing has worked.
And for some reason, there is some screen tearing while scrolling... could this be a problem with core video/animation?

  • Dock functions (expose, spaces, etc) lagging

    Hi guys,
Earlier today, I tried to see how well my computer could handle having a lot of applications open. In total, I opened about 40 or 50, and then closed them all. It was totally smooth, no problems whatsoever. A few hours later, though, some things and lagging. Hiding and showing the dock lags, moving icons in and out, and also, exposé lags, and so does spaces. Some things come later than others, and the framerate leaves a lot to be desired. Keep in mind, this was as smooth as could be just a few hours ago.
I've pulled all the stops trying to fix this, so I'll name everything I've tried so hopefully someone will have a new idea.
    1. Terminal - killall Dock
    2. Restarting
    3. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    4. Deleting com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.dock.db.plist
    5. Booting into single user mode and doing /sbin/fsck -fy
    6. Repairing disk permissions
But still, nothing has worked. Does anyone know what could be causing this, or how to fix it?

  • Dock dissapear, Exposse, Spaces not work

Dock is dissapear, Exposse and Spaces not work, i had repaired permissions from disk utillity but all is de the same, restart and all is not working, command + tab either work, and if a try to minimizar a window nothings happend

I am experiencing this same problem. I have been fine for a few weeks after my Leopard update, but then all of a sudden today I could not find my dock. I wasn't able to get it back at all, so I tried to shut down. It would not shut down so I had to do a hard shut down by holding in the power button. When it rebooted, the dock was still non-existent. I did some googling and learned it might be a corrupt preference. I then deleted the preferences, and immediately a dock (the original default installed) came up. It seemed ok for about 30 seconds, then it quit, and keeps flashing, reappearing, poking out. I deleted the preferences again, same result.
I ran disk utility. It found some permissions problems and "repaired" them. Now the activity monitor shows that my dock is starting and quitting, as stated above, and I can't see it at all. It's gone.
I am pretty upset about this, I rely on the dock heavily for my drag and drop applications in CS3.
    Any solutions to this yet?

  • How do you customize different dock on each space mac lion?

I just installed mac lion os and I want to have a different dock and put different apps on different spaces. For example I want my desktop1 to be a "play" desktop. Where I put all my games and msn and stuff. But I want my desktop 2 to be a "work" desktop, with all my microsoft words, keynote etc. I don't want the keynote and microsoft apps to appear on desktop1. How do I do it?

I heard they simplified that and made it not possible anymore. Typical apple constricting people to be a certain way by decreasing options.
I've beeing searching all over how to do that. No luck

  • App switcher and dock not switching spaces for application

The app switcher occassionally stops switching spaces to bring up the application. When this happens clicking on the dock icon doesn't work to switch spaces either. A logout and log back in are needed for the functionality to return.

Because my dock's already too full with apps that are even more frequently used. Using the app switcher became part of my workflow long ago, and I'm sorry to lose it.

  • Spaces is not shown in Dock

I'm using Spaces en selected "Visuable in Dock", but the Spaces icon isn't shown in the Dock.

    It's in Applications/Utilities/.

  • Define which apps are the in dock for spaces

Is there a way to have certain apps only showing up on the dock in defined spaces?
i.e. Calendar is only showing on the dock when you switch to space 2. So it does NOT show in the dock of space 1.
    Thx,

There may be more like this out there.
I don't know how compatible these are with Liion.
And third party stuff like this eventually bites your back-end.
    But here you go.

  • A workaround to get open documents in different Spaces to the allocated PS space

A small workaround for Spaces CS5 Mac.
If you have CS5 documents spread over different Spaces due to clicking them in the finder and want to get them all back in to the allocated PS Space, here's a workaround.
You do need one doc open in the correct space I'm afraid for it to work. Create a new doc in there if you have to. I tend to leave one small doc open in the right Space all the time now.
Go to the allocated PS space. Select the menu option "Consolidate all to tabs" from the  Window>Arrange menu.
This will bring all the open docs from their spaces to the correct space as tabs.
That might be enough for you but you can't drag adjustments layers and layers with alphas etc to another doc in Tab view, something I do all the time when I'm retouching 20-30 shots and I'm trying to match them.
Hard to do that with tab view obviously.
Next select "Float all in windows" and you'll have your docs viewable, side by side in the right space.
If you assign a key command to those options, it becomes a quick tap 1-2 and you're done.
As far as I can tell, if you want floating windows, and all your docs in the right place, and don't want to open your images from the PS open dialogue (who does when you have 6 windows of 50 images on your dual 30" monitor setup?) then this will do it.
It's not great for all things but it's better than "It's all Apple's fault"

there is certainly no built in way to do it. In fact Dock Spaces is the only program I've ever heard of that allows you to have different docks in different spaces. if it can't do it, it's impossible.

  • Assign a space at a file level (not an application)

I use Parallels desktop all the time and I love being able to assign a full screen Windows VM to Space 2, easily flipping back and forth. I'd like to do this with other VM's - Linux on Space 3 for example. However, it appears I can not assign the VM files - only Parallels as an application, which removes the possibility of assigning another full screen VM to Space 3. Any way to make this happen? Also, any way to hide the dock in one space and show it in another. Thanks

It's a known issue with TextEdit that it adds the "quarantine" attribute to some files when opening them. The best solution is to use a different editor for editing XML and other files that contain code. A good free option is "TextWrangler."

  • FaceTime pauses in different spaces

During a FaceTime video call, when I try to switch to a different space from my desktop, the camera turns off.
Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I am using a Mid-2011 Macbook Air with Mavericks and FaceTime version 3.0.

  • Different minimised documents in different spaces.

    Fellow Mac lovers.... help, please!
It would be a great help if, when I minimise a document, it didn't appear in the Docks of all the differing Spaces I have set up on my computer. In fact, I would like to be able to have differing minimised documents available in Dock of differing Spaces. Does anyone know if this is possible?
I did download a neat program, DockSpaces, that allows you to have multiple docks, but it doesn't seem to allow having different minimised documents in the differing docks.
Any suggestions or ideas on this would be very gratefully received.

  • Can you make an alias of Grab and place in the dock

How can I add a alias of Grab and add to the dock when I have maverick OS?

Open the Utilities folder and drag Grab to the Dock. A space should open up to accommodate it - let go and it should remain in the Dock.
