Diffcult location for Wireless

Hope someone here can help. I have a client that lives in a large home with an external mother in law building. AP is in this building. His wife uses the computer in the main house and consistently getting dropped connections. Originally they had a Dlink AP and extender and it dropped consistently. I was convinced by Cisco sales to purchase a 1240 AG for this location. Installed and configured for "range" and I still have to use the extender. Should it but set to throughput? Is there a suggested config for diffcult areas? Thanks in advance.

I can describe the location a bit more. Is this information needed? The house and external building a separated by a court yard that spans about 150 feet. The house construction is metal beams and rock facing. About 10 inch in all. Thick oak doors and lots of dual pane windows.
I moved the AP router 5 feet closer to the house and it seems to be a bit better. I removed the Dlink extender as it seemed to be an added problem.
But the question remains. Should I adjust the AP for throughput or range for a difficult environment?
I also read that doing a channel search over the next several days may lock in a better channel than the initial search. Honestly they are located in the middle of the desert so I don't suspect they will be any channel interference.

  • Best Location for Wireless Router in 2 Story House

Hello. There was a similar post to this before, but it didn't quite address my concern. I live in a two story house. The router is currently placed in one half of the first floor. I am connected to with my dekstop wirelessly via an extended-range usb adapter. Everything else held equal, is it better to place the router in the highest location possible? In other words, am I more likely to get better reception anywhere in the house if I place the router upstairs (and as close to the center of the house as possible)? Most of the people in my house use their laptops downstairs while I am stuck upstairs with my desktop and wireless adapter getting a decent but not entirely desirable connection (it was very low and would turn off randomly, but I changed the router channel to 11 and now it seems to be consistent but at around 3 to 4 out of what seems to be 10 bars. Ideally, since I like to game and desire the highest speed, I would set up the router via ethernet to my pc upstairs while putting it in a location that will not severely limit the connection downstairs... that is why I ask if it is better to have the router upstairs; if it is, then I will have all the justification I need to try to reposition it.
Also, as something of a more techinical question. How does the radio broadcast from the wireless routers work? Does the signal shoot up and out from the antenna tips? Can it shoot down? Even if it shoots up, is it still better to have it in a higher location?
Sorry for the rambling, but I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

Your router will broadcast the signals in all directions(not just upstair or downstairs)...You should place your router in the center of your house...
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna (if external) should be vertical...

  • What to look for in a location for setting up an Extreme?

I have a router, cable modem, cell phone extender, and hub in a bedroom closet because that is the way it was setup when I moved into my house. It is messy and there are lots of messy cables. I want to move all of this into another part of my house. What do I need to look for when deciding a location for all of this gear? What technical requirements do I need to ensure that it will work? Do I just need power and an ethernet port on the wall? Anything else?
    Thanks.

    Why adequate ventillation?
To keep electronics running cooler, so they will last longer. If you are not concerned about component life, then you can ignore the advice about ventilation.
The gear is on one side of my house and I plan to add another Express device to use to extend the Wi-Fi signal. In this case, I'm assuming your sprinkler example does not matter?
Then why did you not tell us this originally? We could have saved you some time.
You told us that you planned to move all of the gear in the closet, and now you seem to be saying that is not the plan.
Locate the AirPort Express approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
Extending this way always results in compromises. The Express needs to be close to the AirPort Extreme to get a good strong signal, and yet it also needs to be close to the wireless devices to deliver a strong signal to the devices.
It cannot be located both near the Extreme and your devices at the same time, so the best "compromise" is about half way between the Extreme and the area where you need more wireless signal coverage. Avoid walls or ceilings in the signal path as much as possible.
Remember that the Express can only "extend" the quality and speed of signal that it receives. It cannot "boost" the speed of the connection, it can only make it go further.
A much better solution if possible would be to connect the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet cable connection. Then, you can locate the Express exactly where it will be most needed, since there is no signal loss in a wire.

  • My wired Apple Magic Mouse is frozen and I am unable to move around on my Mini Mac.  I receive a window saying the computer cannot locate a wireless mouse.  How do I get my mouse to work again.

My Magic Mouse is frozen.  How do I get it to work again?  Also I keep getting a window that says it cannot locate my wireless mouse.  I do not have a wireless mouse.

Got confused between your header question about a wired mouse and the main question about a wireless mouse.  You said your magic mouse was frozen and added you do not have a wireless mouse.   Problem is ... the magic mouse is wireless.   The original mighty mouse was the corded version.
The wired mouse is a regular problem.  After two to three years it tends to clog up. You can clean it (to a degree) as follows.
Using an alcohol moistened, not wet, cotton bud, scratch at the mouse ball for a minute or so.   Then turn it upside down and on a clean piece of thick white paper or card on a firm surface, vigorously rub the mouse ball on the paper in a regular figure of eight.  Do this for a minute or so and occasionally tap the mouse on the paper.   This will help dislodge bits of fluff etc.   Then try again

  • Setting up security and such for wireless router wrt54g without admin rights (work computer)

We are moving, I am in a new location with a new company and my only computer is this one from work. Trying to get my home network setup, I'm locked out of admin rights on this thing and am trying to set up the above router. I thought I had a modem problem at first, but finally I am online wired for now to the cable modem. I would like to get this router up and running, but I can't use the easy setup disk, and I just tried using the easy setup download and it is locked out as well. How can I get my router setup with security, with no admin rights on the pc?
This will be my first wireless router, so I am very green on the specifics and terminology. Any help is most appreciated.
    Many thanks,

    Thank you toomanydonuts!
I will do this when I get back to the townhouse this evening.
Just so that I am prepared for tonight - I want to confirm and ask a few questions on the "options" and note a couple things I noticed that may help with answers...
Internet connection type - should be easy, I assume there is a "cable modem" option.
SSID - I do not know what this means or what to choose
wireless encryption method (WEP, WPA, WPA2) - Which is best, or is there one I must pick due to computer used and such, I also want to get my Nintendo Wii accessing correctly, I saw these options on that setup, though it didn't work per my first message on the board. I assume whatever encryption method used needs to be chosen for the Wii?
wireless encryption password - I think I can handle this one
    A couple of notes -
this laptop has this always on radar looking for wireless connections - how can I name my router so I know it's mine, other than the fact that it is the strongest signal. Maybe that's a network setting?
Thanks again, glad I came here.
Edit: I suppose I should add, just to ensure - in order to do this process through the url provided above, I need to be ethernet wired through the router to the modem? in order to access last night, I was straight into the modem, didn't seem to work wired through the router.

  • Where is the official documentation for Wireless OTA Enterprise App Distribution?

Where is the official documentation for Wireless OTA Enterprise App Distribution? It used to be here:
    http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#featuredarticles/FA_Wireless_Enterprise_ App_Distribution/Introduction/Introduction.html
The above link is present in many posts in these forums (cf. More Like This below this question.
The information I seek may also have been here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=answerlink&url=http://manuals.info.apple. com/en_US/Enterprise_Deployment_Guide.pd…
The article in question had official details on
    the itms-services:// link,
the app manifest file format and
    the general information.
Currently I cannot find anything official on enterprise app distribution - only third party information. Has something changed, or is this a documentation glitch? Surely wireless OTA enterprise app distribution is still available via the enterprise developer program?
Note: We currently use this for one of our enterprise clients. But before recommending other clients to join the enterprise developer program, we would like an official citation on whether this mechanism still exists.

OK, the link in my question is no longer a 404. It's been replaced by a redirect to a new iOS Enterprise Deployment subsite which has been remade for iOS 8.
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/business/it/deployment.html
My actual question about the technical reference is now located in the iOS Deployment Reference section of Apple Help:

I am trying to log onto my wireless connection but it keeps telling me I'm unable to locate any wireless network.  I know there are several networks nearby. Is this a problem with my phone or my router?

I found a solution that has worked on both iPhone 4's I have that have had the same issues, and also including not being able to download updates in the App store.
Go to Settings > WiFi and turn it OFF.
Next go to General > Cellular > Cellular Data and turn it OFF
Next go back to Settings > WiFi and turn it ON, (wait a few seconds for it to sync with your network)
Finally go back to General > Cellular > Cellular Data and turn it ON.
I had the same issues on both my wife's phone, and my own, and it fixed it immediately without changing any proxy settings or reboots, (which I did try on my phone and did not work, but did not try on my wife's phone)
    Hope this helps!

  • Alternate fix for Wireless Networking

    Hi all,
I haven't gone through the board lately, so I'm not sure if this has already appeared or not, but if you are still having issues with Leopard dropping your networking and refusing to reconnect even if it is a remembered/saved network, this is something that I stumbled upon that may help.
    1) Go into System Preferences
    2) Click on Network
    3) Click on Airport
    4) Click on Advance...
    5) Select your wireless network that is shown in the list (click on it only once!)
    5) Click the "-" button to remove the network
    6) Click Ok
    7) Click Apply
    8) Close System Preferences
    9) Open Keychain Access (use Spotlight to find it if you need to)
    10) Click on login under the Keychains list
    11) Click on Passwords under the Category list
    12) Select the name of your wireless network under the Name list (click only once!)
    13) Delete it (Note: You may be required to enter an administrator password when performing this step)
    14) Click on System under the Keychains list
    15) Click on Passwords under the Category list
    16) Click on the name of your wireless network under the Name list (click only once!)
    17) Delete it (Note: You may be required to enter an administrator password when performing this step)
    18) Quit Keychain Access
    19) Click on your AirPort status icon in the Apple toolbar at the top of your screen (click only once!)
    20) Select Join Other Network... (do this EVEN IF your network is showing in the list already!!)
    21) Type in the name of your network under Network Name
    22) Select the type of security your network uses under Security
    23) Enter your password/key into the Password field
    24) Ensure that Remember this network IS CHECKED
    25) Click on Join
With any luck, you should be successfully reconnected to your wireless network. This seems to work every time I try it when my PowerBook refuses to reconnect to the network.
NOTE: If the above steps don't work right away, I've found it also to be useful to still perform the steps and then restart the computer and perform them again to ensure everything is cleared.

I have been searching high and low for a fix to this and none have worked…until now!
I spotted a fix to this problem that strangely centered on the specific location of the “System Preferences.app”, if other than the standard location of the root of the “Applications” folder. I had in fact moved mine and would NEVER have thought it related to this bug. Hmmm!
If you have moved the System Preferences application (not alias, actual app) to any other location for any reason, your newly joined preferred network will NOT be properly remembered and will NEVER be properly rejoined. Apparently one of the multi-step system procedures involved in properly saving a preferred network assumes the location of System Preferences to be the standard location. Period.
    FIX:
    1) Move “System Preferences.app” back to “Applications\”.
    2) Delete all instances of “Preferred Networks” in “Network Preferences”.
    3) Delete all “Airport network password” instances in “Keychain Access”.
    4) Restart your Mac.
    5) Add/Join applicable preferred network using the Airport pulldown menu or in Network Preferences (as if for the first time). Use “Advanced” in “Network Preferences” to confirm the existence of your preferred network and the correct settings. Use “Keychain Access” to confirm the existence of the applicable “Airport network password” instance and the correct settings.
    6) Restart your Mac. The OS should now find your preferred network and join it on its own. Good Luck!
NOTE: Simply moving back System Preferences will NOT suffice. Deleting and re-adding/joining the preferred network is a must after the app has been moved.

  • Best Physical Location for AEBS

By the end of the summer I plan on upgrading my old Airport base station to the current model. What is the consensus on the best physical location for the station? We have a two-story brick home with a basement and I plan on using the AEBS for wireless and as a router to my computer, Directv receiver and gaming system. The easiest install would be for me to mount it between the floor joists in the basement (the basement "ceiling"), however I don't know if that will severely restrict the range. I could install it in a closet on the first floor, but would need to run a phone line, cat5e cable and power to make it work.
We are really only looking to have the wi-fi available within the structure of the house and maybe the back yard- not the entire neighborhood.

As a follow up, here's what I ended up doing:
I mounted my AEBS in a first-floor closet located in the middle of our home. Since the AEBS has three ethernet ports out, I ran cat5e cable to the 1st floor Directv receiver, the office and the basement gaming system. The only things running wirelessly at this point is the Wii, my old G4 iBook, my son's DSi and a couple of iPod Touch's. The range is good and I've found no dead spots within our home or our yard.

  • HT1178 Best Location for Time capsule (Does it help if placed Higher in the room?)

1500 Sq Ft Ranch - Hallway between computer room and open sapce of living room, kitchen, & dinning room + entrance to Master bedroom
and would it be better to locate in the very center of the home.
Our Older time Capsule reaches to the open area in the center but at times will only pick up in the center of the open space. Other times it very stron in the entire center living area.
I'm expecting the capsule to reach all of the area up to the master Bed room. Not used in the bed room. On our back deck, (52 feet by 18' long) with roof over deck it will be strong on entire deck when the window in the computer room is very small opening at the top. ( old time capsule)
Can place the Newtime capsule in any area.
    Computer backs up to Hallway
Can run Cat6 cablesto any area in home.
We operate off Hughes Net New Gen4 satelite (Very Fast Like our T! connection On long Island NY. ( retired to vermont - Normal conections on Phone etc up here would take 24 hours to down load Max osx updates and that is starting it at midnight.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Ron

Well, as you know it is impossible to ever predict wireless performance in advance....but the general rule would be that it is better to locate the Time Capsule higher, rather than lower.
Ideally, the Time Capsule will be located where wireless devices have a clear line-of-sight signal path to the Time Capsule. Another way of saying the same thing is to imagine that the Time Capsule is a water sprinkler and you want to get as much of the house as wet as possible.
Or, think of the Time Capsule as a strong light. You want to light up as much of the house as possible where wireless devices will be used.
You will likely have to make compromises keeping in mind that a typical wall constructed of sheetrock and 2 by 4s will absorb...on average....about 15-20% of the wireless signal. Brick, cement, or plaster over lathe will absorb a much higher percentage of the signal. Users often forget that large mirrors are in fact a large metal barrier, not allowing much of the signal to pass through.
If you find that the signal will not cover all of the areas where you need a wireless signal, you will need to consider adding an AirPort Express to "extend" the wireless signal further in one direction.

For the last couple of days I have been getting a message, "Could not scan for wireless networks" when I try to connect to WiFi. WiFi connection is sporadic and intermitent at best when I do mange to connect. My phone is set to automatically recognize and connect to familiar networks. All other devices in the area currently have no issue recognizing and connecting to my home WiFi network. I have reset, turned on and off phone. Thanks for anyones suggestions. I have a feeling a trip dowtown to visit Apple is in the cards?

    Hello there, MattBrear.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some in-depth steps to try in resolving your wi-fi connectivity issues:

  • The storage location for Time Machine backups can't be found

I recently purchased a Time Capsule and have successfully backed-up both a PC (via ethernet) and my MacBookPro via wireless. However, after a few hours of inactivity on my MacBook Pro, the Time Capsule icon on my desktop is gone. When I launch Time Machine, I get the following message:
"The storage location for Time Machine backups can't be found". I have browsed the forums and noticed some answers to similar queries to check the "Remember password" option when establishing the connection. I do not have this option when I reconnect. What am I missing?

    Glasses,
It does work! I have successfully use DW on my TC both wirelessly and via ethernet. Ethernet is of course much quicker. And I have run into more DW errors trying wirelessly, so I avoid that method whenever possible. As for other NAS device - I wouldn't know.

It sounds like if you open Preferences in Word there will be a place where you can specify where to store autorecover files. Right now it sounds like it's pointing to somewhere that doesn't exist.
