Difference b/w Hardware & Software based firewall

How can i differenciate the Hardware & Software based firewall?
What are the key advantages of Hardware based firewall?
what are the limitation of software based firewall?
Regards,

Hi Syed
Software based firewalls are the firewalls which are provided by software for eg you install an antivirus program Mcafee the firewall which will be provided by Mcafee is software based firewall. Windows inbuilt firewall is another example of software based firewall.
Hardware based firewall are those where we require a different hardware to perform packet check. For eg Cisco FWSM,PIX,Fortigate are all example of hardware based firewall.
Limitation of Software based firewall:
Software-based firewalls aren't the ultimate security tool, however. A personal firewall can't prevent viruses from entering your system through legitimate sources such as a web browser or through email. An anti-virus program with constantly updated virus signatures must always be included in an overall security strategy.
Personal firewalls also can't protect an entire network unless the software-based firewall is installed on every computer. In medium and large-scale environments, software-based firewalls must be managed properly to ensure optimal security coverage.

  • Hardware or software based menu encoding?

Under DVDSP preferences, under Menu options, how do I know which is preferable, hardware or software based encoding. Can someone please explain the difference?
    Thank you.

    Pamela:
how do I know which is preferable, hardware or software based encoding.
That depends on your graphic board (GPU) configuration. If you have a slow/old GPU board, you better start using software based and check results. Ussually that must work fine.
Under certain combinations of FCS + OS + GPU, changing from one to the enother settings have solved some weird encoding issues (missing fonts, images, ...) to some users.
But remember that those settings only affect Menu elements encoding, not your video tracks encoding.
    Hope that helps !

  • Non-software based security to prevent theft?

I recently purchases a Macbook, and I've already been looking at software based security tracking. I've discovered Lojack, Orbicule's Undercover, and U Washington's Adeona (which is free), and I've written my own perl script too. I don't have valuable data on my laptop, but because i'm a poor student i'd like to keep the laptop itself.
However, it seems that almost any software based security can be overcome, so I'm wondering what about a hardware based security device? Something that doesn't matter if the hard drive is removed? It's the lojack for cars idea -- install a transmitting device somewhere inside the car.
I think a simple solution would be to attach a tiny processor to the wireless router which can run a simple emailing script sending encrypted messages to my email account. Or a "fake ram card" which is actually a wireless transmitter or something else that can not be easily noticed or removed?
    Does anybody have a recommendation?

I am on a campus... And my computer and ipod are registered with Apple, so I assume those actions help.
Look, seriously, there have got to be some simple solutions for tracking down a stolen laptop. Here's some ideas:
    1) A processor (or something?) lock to the harddrive. That is, you can't simply swap out the hard drive to disable the security software. the bootstrap os will refuse to load an os that's not on the harddrive it was keyed to. this way, they have to put the harddrive back in, and my software can resume emailing location markers.
    2) A modified battery (or ram card), by appearances identical to the normal battery. Nobody suspects the battery... but take out 25% of the battery, and replace it with a wireless router (they fit on a usb stick these days) that can reactivate the security software or to send the regular (encrypted) location updates to my personal email account whenever it finds an open network. So I can notify the police or campus security etc.
    3) blah blah blah
In this day of advanced technology... it should be impossible to steal a laptop and get away with it. somebody (or company) just needs to sit down and work out the details. i suspect some people already have, i just don't know where.

  • Software based hard drive tests?

Is there a software based hard drive tester out there? I have no idea how to test my now 7 year old hard drive on my MDD,just wondering if there are software based solutions as well as hardware, and where to get them, thanks!

Excellent, thank you, just one more question, can the power supply be tested the same way, with software?Or am I stuck using a power supply tester, which I dont currently have(a link to a decent one would be nice,if I cant do this with software, that is).Again thanks for this,as I totally forgot which ones were the best :)Oh,and BTW,japamac,I just joined the Quicksilver club(if one exists )and found your blog an excellent resource for deciding on which one to get,as well as which upgrade parts to use.Recieving one this week, with an Radion 9800Pro card.Alraedy have a Firmtec card and am using a 1TB Hitachi jupiter series hard drive. The Quicksilver is a DP 800,and I'm running Leopard.I for one just want to take this time to thank you for all the help you have been to me and everyone who loves their Power PC G4's!!

  • Codec/ hardware/software for jumbo-frame size video playback on desktop?

    Hello all,
I am looking for a codec that I can render to from AE and FCP, and can preview 1/2 or 3/4 scaled and actual scle (partial) on my 30" mac desktop.
    ideal size: 3840x2160 (16:9) 25 fps 604 MB/sec CODEC for desktop PB
the AJA whack test on Dulce RX shows (720MB/sec.)easily enough disk throughput to handle 604MB/sec,
but apple uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 won't play more than 5sec.
my problem is not editing and rendering of which I will do a variety of methods, but rather
?????what uncompressed codec etc. to render TO????....how to see it,
1/2 or 3/4 scale or actual scale (partial)
    on my 30" desktop
so I can check composition...before we finnally have it chopped up for seperate projectors or in the very fancy installation projection system
or to identify the hardware/software bottle necks to playing such a frame size on my desktop.
    thanks,
    Hilary

Wow, you are definitely on the bleeding edge, Hilary, trying to produce quad-HDTV on a Mac. One thing you might want to try, if you haven't already, is to post your questions at the AVScience forum. I think you will find a more focused audience there.
I don't really have answers for you, but I do have more questions and possibly some things to think about. First question; is the source material really quad-HDTV or is it lower res, like normal HDTV, and the plan is to show it through four, 1080p projectors onto a video wall? The reason I ask is, if the source material is lower res, then it seems pointless to try and encode it as quad-HD. You could just encode as HD (1080p) and then chop it up into four 960 x 540 chunks and project that.
You mention that you have encoded Apple uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 but that the file will only play for five seconds. What happens after that? Does it get choppy or does it just altogether stop playing? The answer may hold clues as to what the problem is.
What will the be the final platform for playing this video through the four projectors? Will it be the same G5 PowerMac that you are producing on or is the playback system based on different hardware? That could influence the encoding choice.
It seems the most ideal development system for what you are trying to do would not be on a 30" monitor but instead on four 23" Cinema Displays connected to two graphics boards installed in your G5. Then you could be working at full scale aross all the monitors and you wouldn't have to worry about 1/2 scale or 3/4 scale or partial full scale viewing.
It sounds like you have verified there to be adequate throughput off the disk to play the file at 25 fps but it's hard to imagine that a ~0.6 GBytes per second data stream isn't going to bottleneck somewhere on the G5. That's like 10x the data rate of FW800 if I am reading your post correctly. Maybe you meant 604 Mbps? That's just inside the (theoretical) envelope of FW800, but still a lot of data to be streaming real time without interruption. But where is the pinch point? That is the question. I'm guessing that it is disk related inspite of what the AJA whack test says. Are you using a raid by any chance? That should improve the AJA score and make for more headroom, especially if run off a SATA card.
Personally, I rarely use anything more powerful than Apple's Activity Monitor as a system monitoring tool. But I doubt that it has enough diagnostic power for this application. If you are running Leopard, DTrace might be helpful, but I have no experience with it personally. Just trying to find the bottleneck could turn into a whole project of its own. Again I refer you to the AVScience forum as a possible shortcut to the answers you seek. Good luck with your project.

  • Site-to-Site VPN with Sophos Software-Based UTM

I'm looking to build out a cloud environment with a vendor, and need a site-to-site VPN to be established between the vendor's environment and my environment. Since I am using a Cisco ASA 5510, they have suggested the use of the software-based Sophos UTM firewall on their end to establish the tunnel.
Has anyone had any experience with configuring VPN tunnels between Sophos and Cisco firewalls? If so, what are your experiences? Any drawbacks or shortcomings?

Go over these links, best way is to do them through cli, it is easier to understand the implementation flow.

  • Software Based Waveform Monitors

I would like to know if anybody out there knows if there is a software based waveform monitor available like the "Serious Magic DV Rack 2" which is sold by Adobe and only PC based. I don't necessarily want to have to be running FCP in order to use it, all I want to do is get a waveform and vectorscope up on the Powerbook I use on location.

I've used Videoscope and it's ok. Though it's not a piece of hardware, either. And it gets confused sometimes when FCP or Quicktime is open. So if you want to use the same computer to capture the video, you have to make your measurements, shut it down, and then open up whatever you're using to capture. I admit to only using it as the free tryout, so maybe this gets fixed when you buy
    $30 after the trial.

  • Deleting Root CA Software based key after Migrating the Key to HSM ?

    Hi ALL,
I have migrated my Software based Root CA key to HSM successfully but my challenge is how to delete the old Software based key so that I am sure that my CA is using the key which migrated to the HSM .

therefore, this approach doesn't guarantee software key removal. And I don't know either how certutil works internally, so I wouldn't be safe with this solution. I'll try to ask someone who knows this and will return asap.
to OP: how did you perform key migration to HSM? Did you export software-based key to PFX and imported to HSM, or just instructed HSM to pick the certificate and private key?

  • How to determine the hardware requirements based on the Services' payload

    hello,Guys
i am wondering if i can calculate the hardware requirements based on the services' payload ?
what factors should i consider when to determine the hardware requirements?
is there any documents related to my questions? ;)
    Thanks
    Regards
    Wen

Payload size is not the only factor while determining size of the system (h/w). You need to consider number of services, nature of services (sync/async), payload size, frequency of messages (load), peak load value, security constraints, performance requirements etc..
You may contact your local Oracle Sales Representative/ Oracle Support to get help in determining size of the system. They will provide you a sizing questionarre and on the basis of that they may suggest sizing as well (Oracle has an internal tool for proposing sizing)
