Difference between 8X Super Drive and 8X 'Double Layer' Superdrive?

Can someone advise me the difference, if any, between 8X Super Drive and
8X 'Double 'Layer' Super Drive. I often see both used in advertisments for
Apple Computers. Thanks.

DVDs can be single-layer (4.7 GB) or dual-layer (8.5 GB). All drives can read both types, and burn single-layer, but only a dual-layer drive can burn dual layer. Macs have all shipped with dual-layer drives for several years. I think all drives currently sold are dual-layer, so it may just be an omission in some of the ads, unless they are for older equipment.

I don't understand the difference between regular hard drive ( i guess) and the solid states one.  what are the benefits of a solid state hard drive? are there any cons?   Also 128 gb flash drive versus 500 gb hard drive.  New to Apple so confused. Need Help!

http://techtalker.quickanddirtytips.com/the-difference-between-a-SSD-and-a-HDD.a spx.  The difference between 128gb and 500gb is simply the amount of storage space available, 500 being greater capacity.

  • Differences In "Combo Drive" vs. the "Double-Layer Superdrive" ?

i was looking at the base macbooks on the apple mac website and there is two different white models and one has the "combo drive" and the other has the "double-layer superdrive". is there much of a difference?
also, on those two base models, one has a 2.0Ghz processor and the other is a 2.2Ghz... is there really going to be much of a noticeable difference?
    thanks!

The difference is that the combo drive cannot burn DVD - it can only burn CD. The SuperDrive can burn CD or DVD.
Both combo and SuperDrive can play cd's and DVD's.

  • What's the difference between LaCie d2 drives and LaCie Porsche drives

Does anyone have any advice? I need to get a 500gig drive and can't figure out what the difference is between these two drives. They have different enclosures but is there any other major difference?
    Thanks a lot

As many posters here will tell you LaCie drives have a variable history concerning reliability.
I used to be a staunch supporter of LaCie drives but we've had four of their units fail in the last few months (not the hard drives, just the FW bridge boards). Very disappointed, not to mention expensive.
We now (almost exclusively) use these Macpower Taurus enclosures:
    http://www.span.com/catalog/productinfo.php?cPath=19_1302_1324&productsid=16308
But G-Tech, Iomega and Glyph also make decent external drives, although IMO they are mostly overpriced, particularly Glyph. But regardless of manufacturer: ALWAYS have a back-up drive... and use it.

  • What is the difference between combo dive (24x) and Double layer (8x) ???

    Hi everyone,
I am helping my girlfriend to purchase a new Macbook, so I would like to know (I guess she) what is the difference between the combo drive (24x) and double layer (8x) divers? Although I have a Macbook Pro, I could not give to her an right answer about this simple question—what a shame!
    Thanks,
    M

From my P.O.V, being able to burn DVD's is a fairly standard feature these days and is very useful. I have the 2.4 and am very happy with it, i would always buy the best one can afford at the time as it goes out of date so quickly, so i would personally go for the 2.4, yes, but it depends on whether she thinks she is actually going to need that DVD burning facility.

  • Difference Between A Support User and Super User in CRM

    Hi All,
May I know what is the difference between a support user and a super user in CRM?
    Please advice, thank

    HI Plaban
not sure if you answered your own question here?
Change User - by itself would allow update of address data, user parameters, defaults, etc
Assign Object - as you mentioned roles and profiles.
However, if assigning, I think you need to have both actions: change and assign
I recall (ages ago) that change was only the user details and not the role or profiles. As a result, there were a few threads where people had to update the action for the request type of provisioning would not occur.
This is something you could test

  • What is the difference between Wine, Wineskin, Winery and Wine Bottler, and how do I get Wine to *ACTUALLY* work in Mountain Lion?

Ok, so this is my first post here and I am admittedly terrible at forums. Someone might say, "This was addressed in the ___________ thread by __________! Go read it!" --- that may be so but I've spent enough hours trying to google this problem into submission to no avail based on what is apparently working for others, so I would like a chance to get specific answers to specific questions that aren't from Mar 2011, etc.
So first of all, I'm confused by all the various Wine programs/apps/whatevers. I've seen Wine, Wineskin, Winery, Wine Bottler, and at this point I wouldn't be surprised if there are even more than that. What's the difference between all of these and how do they work with one another? What do I actually need to get windows programs working?
All of my google searches have led me to people giving out fish, but no one giving out fishing lessons. I'm not a pro at mac and windows and all that, but I'm a fairly bright individual who gets VERY frustrated, very quickly, when I don't understand the why and how of something I'm attempting.
I've also found "answers" where the person attempting to help starts off helpful enough, but degrades into the most archaic of techno-babble after about 5-6 sentences. On the other hand, I've watched tutorials on youtube where the poster decides to skip (apparently crucial) sections of the tutorial, and mutters such gems as: "... you might wanna have to run Wine first before you can do anything, cuz I think it has to configure it and set up a bunch of stuff"
    O.o
A happy medium between techno-babble and the most basic of explanations would be ideal for me, and I'd imagine for others as well.
Here is a summarized history of my relationship with Wine:
Diablo II - I downloaded this awesome thing which ended up being... uh... I guess Diablo II in a Wineskin "wrapper". I'm not sure, all I know is that it's a D2 icon, and if I go to 'show package contents', it's got C drive, Program Files, et cetera inside of it. I double click it, it launches D2, and it works like a dream. <3
'Vanilla Install' - That's what I heard someone call it. It was the command/terminal style install using xquartz and xcode found at http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/. I followed every instruction to the letter, and got all the way to '$ sudo port install wine', at which point it started going smoothly, free from the possible error he described regarding the installation of xcode, and then just failed after I left the room to use the restroom and came back. Please don't ask me to repeat what the error was, because honestly, after reading more things on the interwebs, I'm confused as to why it's even necessary to go through all of that, so I'd rather not try that route again anyways, rendering the error message quite possibly irrelevant.
Wine + Wine Bottler - So I decided to try to seek out an easier method, as I know that one must exist that doesn't involve command lines. I found a video tutorial at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0BBkISOcEA, and oh man would it be great if that method had actually worked. Again, I followed all instructions provided to procure my free fish, and at the point in the video where he declares that "xquarts or x11 will open" - it doesn't open. Nothing opens. I was trying to install Star Sonata, btw.
So here I am, thoroughly worn out, frustrated at all the random places Wine is installed on my mac now, and just want someone to explain it all, from top down, without getting toooooooo technical on me. I know that might be asking a lot...

    ## I know that the poster has already found a solution, but the following is a possible answer for others that have similar issues.
For Winebottler, just go to their website and download it. Run the program. Choose .wine as your prefix (best choice) or whatever suits you best. You'll need a functional X11. If you can't use the one that comes with your mac, download the latest one from the website.
If your issue is one with Winebottler's Wine not running correctly due to X11, then you have a pretty ugly problem, although a simple upgrade is the best solution (Upgrade XQuartz.app).
    http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/#part-1
The above website is the easiest way to get REAL wine on your computer. First of all, Wineskin WInery, etc. are NOT WINE. They are 3rd party apps that may use Wine or may have originally part of Wine, but they are no longer up to date with Wine. WineBottler is currently up to date with the stable releases of Wine (but not the maintenence releases).
For the website tutorial and to run Wine on your mac without using a thrid party app, you will need to know a few things.
First, you will need to know basic control of the command line. That means, sudo (you must know the administrator password to your computer), and the forms of cd (change directory).
Second, you will need Xcode. Download 4.2 (stable) or whatever other versions you want, but beware: It is over 1 GB, and you will need time for it to work.
Third, you will need to get MacPorts and configure it. The tutorial should have this data.
When you download wine (use sudo port install wine-devel for the latest development release of wine), it will first download a lot of dependencies. This will take a while. After that, it will download wine itself.
After obtaining wine, to run a program, open the terminal.app window.
    cd desktop/XYZ/ZYZ\ WRQ
The above will first enter the desktop, then folder XYZ, then folder ZYZ WRQ. From here,
    wine th11e.exe
Or whatever executable you are trying to open. (Using Subterranean Animism as my example).
It should, in theory, run the program. Watch the terminal for errors. If there is an X11 problem, then it's not wine acting up. If the app crashes or has other issues, check the Wine Application Database to see if your app is compatible with wine.
If you have any further questions or other things, feel free to reply; I may or may not get back to you, but there's a good chance that someone will come in eventually. Otherwise, the Wine Wiki should have some information.

  • Difference between a master DVD and a regular DVD

Can anyone explain to me the difference between a master DVD and a regular DVD. What is the workflow from FCP to compressor then DVDSP as far as bitrate settings etc? Thanks in advance!!

LOL - I wouldn't let it worry you... we all start somewhere.
When you click on 'Build and Format' you get a window appearing which lets you set all kinds of different parameters. At the bottom you will see two drop down boxes. Choose 'Hard Drive' in the top one, and '.img' in the second. This will tell DVDSP to create a disc image and put it in the location that you then specify. When done, you can double click this image and it will open like a DVD disc would - if you have got DVD Player running then your project will run as if it was on a physical disc (although slightly quicker).

  • The difference between a OS server and an HD

Could someone explain to me the difference between a hard drive on a network an an OS based server? Right now I have all my captured raw footage on a 1 terabyte HD on the network. My wife and I access these files from different computers. What would a server do that would be different.

    Michael O'Brien wrote:
Does OSX server do the same thing?
    No.
OS X Server is a general server-spec version of Mac OS X. Final Cut Server is an application that can run on either Mac OS X client or Mac OS X Server. Mac OS X Server includes several functional differences from Mac OS X client that make it easy to operate as a Mail server, DNS server, Directory server, web server, database server, etc.
Many of those same functions and operations are possible with Mac OS X Client, but you'd be running them all from the command line and the slick GUI and integrations that are part of OS X Server would be absent.

  • I did re-set my password and when I click on Install for Mavericks, I still get a box for "administrator password" and it still won't accept my new password. Is there a difference between my Apple ID and the administrator password they're asking for?

I downloaded Mavericks and it won't install. I did re-set my password and when I click on Install for Mavericks, I still get a box for "administrator password" and it still won't accept my new password. Is there a difference between my Apple ID and the administrator password they're asking for? I never had an administrator password-- I just hit enter and have never had a problem before with previous installations. I'm on an iMac, from 2007, running Mt. Lion (version 10.8.5). I've been looking for other's posts who may be having the same problem, but haven't found any. Can anyone help?

Ugh. The 'no password, no work' thing is a recent Apple development. I ran into it on my system and ended up having to do a clean install on a partition I fully erased.
I suppose, if you have the ability to, go online and look up how to burn a bootable DVD image. Download the 10.8.4 image then use the Disk Utility to make a boot image of it. You'll need a dual-layer DVD or a USB drive (or memory stick at least 8GB) If you've got an optical drive, burn the disk, if you've a USB device, use that.
Then get a pocket drive and copy your important files off the system or let Time Machine do a full backup.
When the backup is done, insert the disk and hold down the C key until the machine boots off of the DVD. At the point you get to the start window, go to the menu and choose the Disk Utility.
In the Disk Utility, reformat the drive. You go to the actual DRIVE (not the Macintosh HD, but the root above it that is the actual hard drive device)
I always do this and *partition* it into several volumes, the benefit being, you can store all of your music, documents and importans stuff on that secondary storage volume you make - it will have it's own index and then the first volume is where you put the OS and it will have it's own index as well. That way, if the OS throws a wobbler and you need to reinstall, you don't lose your data.
Depending on the size of your hard drive, it is good to give your OS partition at least 60GB and optimally 100GB, and the rest for storage.
Name your volumes, use the little box sliders to manually size them or put that number in the size window, select for the format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and hit Apply and then the Disk Utility will quickly create your new partitions.
Once finished, quit the Utility and it will return you to the OS installer. Select the volume you want to install to and it should start up and install.
Once the installation is done, you'll get the new machine startup then you MUST put in a password for the computer. Once you're in, and to the desktop, don't bother with any Mountain Lion updates, go right to the App Store and get the Mavericks update and let it install the app to your Applicaitons folder, then do that install.
On a side note, there MAY be a way to make a disk image from the Mavericks application and avoid the entire Mountain Lion step.. I honestly do not know, but a bit of hitting the search engines may find out if there is. I think that if you looked for "make Mavericks boot disk or boot image' you may find something.
    Good luck!

  • Difference between Oracle Testing Center and Prometric?

what is the Difference between Oracle Testing Center and Prometric?

Notes for an Oracle Testing Center are here:
The cancellation policies are possibly harder than a Standard Testing Center Vendor.
I would suggest that Oracle Testing Centers possilbly offer exams more on an event or batch basis; (Oracle Openworld is an example; though thats not what one would think of as an Oracle Test Center).
In general I suspect most people will find it just as easy to take the exam through a prometric(or new testing vendor) center. and there will often typically be more slots available. And the testing center will be typically be examing for other testing suppliers, perhaps mosting microsoft and cisco, but there's a mryiad of others out there as well. So the'll probably be well set up for it.
Here in the UK (south) we have a fairly (very) dense population. I've used 4 centers myself:
One 5 miles from me, a college, thats dual Pearson VUE/Prometric; though there only offering Pearson VUE at present until they moved to a bigger suite, with 4 stations. Nice and friendly. 5 days week.
One 25 miles from me, a training center, that offer dual Pearson VUE/Prometric; 4/8 stations; very friendly, cup of coffe offered; I usually go by Puff Puff to this one.
One 10 miles from me, maybe a 12 workstation suite, they offer usually prometric (but not oracle) on one a week. Felt Conveyor like compared to other two above; but very friendly and efficient.
One 35 miles from me, Prometric only including oracle only, maybe a 12 workstation suite, CRT's, and not necessarily of the best quality. This one really felt conveyor like to me, though staff were friendly. This is effectively a drive for me. Also whereas the others I've usd sit one down to sign the forms in a room this one was done at building reception.
The city center ones can sometimes be a little noisy and earplugs are recommended, though the one city center one I've used has provided them others don't have to.
In general from once I used a particular center I feel more comfortable; I'll know exactly where it is; where I have have a quick cup of coffee (with sugar) beforehand going over notes. This all helps me to be a little less anxious before the exam. When I get that prepartion wrong, and I certainly did once, if probably cost me maybe 2/3/4 %.
Getting to know your local test center and routine is one reason why I encourage people to take 1z0-007 and 1z0-051 proctored so they know the procedure and get to know a local Promteric etc Test Center before taking a more advanced and expensive exam.
    Rgds -bigdelboy.
PS: I expect comments from some people who live 100 (+) miles from a test center and have no alternative choice. And those in some places will probably say they feel they are treated like cattle by the test center.

  • Difference between SAP/APO/DP and the SAP/CRM solution for forecasting

    Hi,
Can you please help me identifying the main differences between SAP/APO/DP and the SAP/CRM solution for forecasting? Advantages and disadvantages?
    Thanks a lot

    Hi LCD777,
Forecasting at DP & CRM are altogether at different entities.  CRM involves webbased data transfer mechanism tool whereas DP is database/livecache driven tool.
In CRM, you dont get optimised solution of forecasting out of it whereas in DP you can get as much as
optimised solution & flexibility as per your requirements.
DP is majorly a forecasting tool where in huge statistical method functionalities are embedded in
whereas CRM is majorly a transactional tool wherein it involves gathering of forecast data and executing it.
Typically, CRM will be integrated with DP containing GATP environment & ECC so that DP will plan for forecast data, ECC system drives sales order data & GATP calls for availability check and finally
the forecast execution& transactions will be controlled by CRM

  • Re: DIfference between Schemas, PCRS' FUnctions and Operations

    Dear SAPExperts,
Can anybody pls tell me what is difference between Schemas, PCRS' Functions and Operations.
    Thanx in advance
    Regards
    Aniruddha

    Hi Aniruddha
When the payroll driver is executed (for ex: PC00_M40_CALC for INDIA is executed) the schema IN00 (standard schema) is executed and it calls certain functions (functions may use Rules. Rules contain Operation) and also subschemas.
Functions could be of four types
    1. Performing some payroll computations (E.g. INEPF function calculates the PF amount of an employee during payroll run)
    2. Calling rules (E.g. P0045 function calls a rule INLN to compute the loan details of a personnel number).
    3. Getting data from Infotypes (E.g. P0581 will get the data from Infotype-581 for payroll processing).
    4. For some decisions. (E.g. IF & ENDIF function is used to execute as per the true and false decisions) etc.
When the PY is executed SAP uses lot of Internal Tables to store data and also provides data to other internal tables.
The read and change access to Internal Tables is enabled using functions that are executed in a personnel calculation schema and using operations that are executed in personnel calculation rules.
The following is just an attempt to provide some info on how Functions are processed during the PY Run. For ex: (functionality of subschema XIN0 and INBD)
    1. INITIALIZATION OF PAYROLL: When the Payroll is executed first the subschema XIN0 is called,   This subschema comprises the following main steps:
    I.     Specify program type (payroll or evaluation)
II.     Set switch for database updates (YES/NO) all database updates are controlled via this switch (otherwise simulation)
III.     Only infotypes from the HR master record which apply to the selected personnel number are read.
IV.     All Time Management infotypes are imported.
    V.     Specify check against control record PA03 (test or live).
    2. READ BASIC DATA: Once the Initialization of Payroll is successful, the subschema INBD is called. This subschema reads the Basic data of an employee who is there in the Payroll execution. Basic Data includes, determining Employee Name, Reading Work Center/Basic Pay Data, Setting Financial Year Dates and Allowance Grouping Tables, Reading Previous Employment Tax Details, Reading Housing (HRA/CLA/COA), Reading Exemptions, Reading Income from Other Sources, Reading Section 80 Deductions, Reading Investment Details (Sec 88), Reading Provident Fund Contributions, Reading Other Statutory Deductions, Reading Car and Conveyance, Reading Long Term Reimbursements, Read ID Details. Function GON checks whether all the master data has been imported, no further processing of schema will occur unless certain data is present.
The Subschema INBD calls the following functions in order to read the Basic Data:
    ENAME :
Function ENAME reads the last valid name of the employee in the payroll period. The formatting used for the country in question is used when displaying this name.
    WPBP
If an employee receives a pay increase within a payroll period, the Basic Pay infotype (0008) is changed and delimited as of a specific date. Two data records exist for one payroll period.
During payroll, the system writes the Basic Pay wage type to the results table with two different indicators. These split indicators are a link to the WPBP table that contains the relevant values. The system takes into consideration both data records for the corresponding partial periods when calculating remuneration.
    ININI
    P0580
    P0581
    P0582
    P0584
    P0585
    P0586
    P0587
    P0588
    P0583
    P0590
    P185I
    GON :
Function GON checks whether all the master data has been imported. No further processing of the schema will occur unless certain data is present. Checking procedures vary from country to country. There must always, however, be a work center (P007).
[Def. of Functions, Rules and Operations (copied from Raju's answer)
Schema is a collection of functions
A Rule is a collection of operations.
An operation is a very basic piece of logic that is used, mostly, to manipulate wage types

  • Any real difference between a 1.83 and 2.0 MacBook Pro?

    Hi all,
I have recently bought a MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz model. It was on sale at my local computer store and I thought it was a good find, as it was brand new and was selling for £1099, a £300 saving on the 2.0 GHz model. Before I start using it, I just wanted to know if anyone knew if there was a real performance difference between the two and should I have paid the extra £300 to get the 2.0 GHz machine?
I only ask this, as I know that over time Apple sometimes tweak the machine to improve it and (after talking with someone at Apple), I've been told that there have been 5 or 6 changes to the inner workings (or revisions as they called them), and I wondered if this changed the performance or if it was just minor improvements regarding heat and noise and so on.
To finish, does anyone have any speculation as if this is a good time to buy a MacBook Pro with the introduction of the Core 2 Duo chips in the new iMacs?
    Many thanks.
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.83GHz Core Duo / 512MB / 80GB

So what you are saying is that the 170 MHZ difference between the 1.83 and the 2.0 is noticeable, but the 160 MHZ difference between the 2.0 and the 2.16 is not?
I thought we were passed the marketing gimmicks and the clock speed race, but I guess not.
Clock speed doesn't tell you anything about the performance of a CPU. Intel almost ran themselves into the ground by trying to pump up their clock speeds and feeding that tripe to the masses. AMD focused on a solid architecture that created a robust chip. As a result AMD took the lead in performance and stability.
Intel's greatest achievement to date has been the PIII Coppermine. So good was this architecture that they have gone back to it. The Centrinos are based off the Coppermines as are the dual cores.
The point of the story is that clock speed means nothing. Save your cash and put it to better use by getting a 7200 rpm drive or more RAM.
