Difference between EP & BI Portal

Hi All,
Can some body tell me what is the difference between EP & BI portal.
As I need to work on a new project where i need to display the list of available reports for the user categorized and displayed as menu in BI portal.
on selection of the report I need to execute Query and display the results.
I am compltly new to this area just had a basic knowledge on Webdynpro.
Your help will be well appriciated in this aspect.
Thanmks & regards,
Sai Krishna.

Hi,
There is nothing called BI portal. It is SAP Enterprise/NetWeaver Portal but based on the organizational purpose like if the portal is being used majorly for displaying BI related data, then people call it BI portal.
Now SAP provides standard packages to integrate BI data to portal. Based on the standard package, you can create the iViews to display BI data.
In case your portal is EP7.0, then you can refer to http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/9d/24ff4009b8f223e10000000a155106/frameset.htm
Else if it is EP6.0, you can refer to http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/9d/24ff4009b8f223e10000000a155106/frameset.htm

https://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/SRM/SRM+Portal - see portal info - SSO access upon a role.
SRM GUI - Application server  - DIALOG screens - configuration done here.
    SRM Browser- HTM l screens
All your dialog screens are converted in to HTML screens by INTERNET  TRANSACTION SERVER . now a days it is in built with srm server.
but beauty here is the end user/purchaser  needs just browser to create his request. he does not want any client software on his machine.

  • Difference between using the Enterprise Portal and SAP GUI

    Hi Gurus,
Could one of you please send me a document that lists the differences between the Enterprise Portal and SAP GUI?
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
For groups, managedBy is an administrative convenience to designate “group admins”. Whatever principal listed in
managedBy gets permission to update a group’s membership (the actual security is updated on the group’s AD object to allow this).
In Win2008 and later managedBy also became the way you delegated local administration on an RODC, allowing branch admins to install patches, manage shares, etc. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755310(WS.10).aspx).
On the RODC, this is updating the RepairAdmin registry value within RODCRoles.
So the difference between them should be only the way they do the same thing.

  • Difference between Portal Transport and Basis Transport

    Hi Experts,
    I have few questions .
    1. What's the difference between transport in portal and transport in Basis.
2 . In user admin , we create users and assign them roles. Even Basis people will create
new userids and assign them roles. Whats the difference between these two.
    3. In useradmin whats the difference between assigned roles and assigned groups.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi,
I don't see any differnece in portal and basis transport
Content transport generally done from one landscape to other landscape. say  from dev to test system
    or test  to production system.
we create user id using user admin role in portal ume or we can get users externally by using LDAP funtionality.
Using user admin role we can assingn users to rolese and groups.
Groups are used for a group of users. IF certain users have similar authorizations in portal then we group them in single user group and then assing this group to the roles. This is called authorization.
Role is used to display the portal content to the users and is the top level navigation in portal.
If I miss anything at basis level then someone can help you.

  • Difference between developer workplace and full blown portal

    Hello,
Can anybody tell me what the difference is between the developer workplace and a full blown portal?
    Thanks,
    Elmar

Last time I checked, there was no functional difference between the two portal environments - the Developer Workplace, however, must run on Windows, whereas with a generic portal install you can install it on either Windows, or one of the various Unix variants.  The only reason for this restriction is that the Dev Studio has some Windows DLLs that will not work under Unix (although some people have made the Dev Studio mostly work under Unix, this is an unsupported configuration and is therefore not recommended).
You may also get some extra 'developer-specific' content in the DWP installation that you won't get as part of a generic installation.  That's not to say you couldn't get the content after the fact, and install it on the generic portal install.
We don't use the Dev Workplace, since our PC desktops are quite restricted, and constantly scanned (in other words, performance is horrible).  We have Unix environments that run multiple portal developer instances (one per developer) - we just point our Dev Studio at those environments and deploy there.

    Hi Vivek,
Please search before you post any thread, as this is very basic question.
The answer is, using 3.5 Infopackage you can load data in PSA as well as in target. But using 7.0 Infopackage you can load data only till PSA.
I don't think there is any other difference than this.

  • What is difference between Portal on NW 7.3 and Portal on NW 7.0 Ehp 2?

I am checking out the features of NW 7.3 (Java server related) and NW 7.0 Ehp 2 (ABAP server / Business Suite related).
If I think about NW 7.3 I am think NWDS, Web Dynpro Java, Visual Composer, Composition Environment, PI, Mobile, Portal etc. so basically everthing that's Java related.
If I think about NW 7.02 I am think Business Suite applications, classic Dynpro,Web Dynpro ABAP, BSP etc. so basically everthing that's ABAP related.
Now that I am reading the features I see Portal in both areas: featurs in NW 7.02 but alos features in NW 7.3?
Are we talking about 2 different kinds of Enterprise Portals? Is there a difference between Enterprise Portal installed in Java environment (so basically the CE Portal) and an Enterprise Portal installed on top of e.g. SAP CRM or ERP?
So when are Portal features NW 7.3 applicable and when are features NW 7.0 EhP x applicable? Or are both applicable and does a Portal have an ABAP based piece and a Java based Piece???
    kind regards,
    Angelique Heutinck

    Hi,
to be honest - this is nothing a forum should clarify about. You are asking for the universe. Obviously the architecture is completely unknown by you so take a look at help.sap.com and start with architectural things. This also explains where the portal is located and if there is java and abap or not.
Regarding release cycle: for the portal it works like for all other netweaver components. In 7.02 you have a 7.02 portal while in 7.3 you have a 7.3 portal. Its the same application just a new release with new features.
By the way: features and so on are also described at help.sap.com including the new ones for every release and stack.
Be aware of the fact that there is also a huge difference in CE and non-CE installation (I'm sure you already know - see help.sap.com).
I close this thread for now. If there is some detailed question - feel free to ask.

  • What is the difference between CE Portal and normal Portal

Can someone tell me the difference between CE Portal & Normal Portal. I mean, I keep hearing that SAP EP 7.2 is CE portal whereas SAP EP 7.3 is not CE portal.
Can I assume that CE (Composite environment) is a failure model so SAP switched back to Non-CE environment ? Your inputs please.

    Hello,
SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment 7.1 and 7.2 have been introduced as a lean "side-car" approach to complement the SAP NetWeaver standard release. Main reason was to provide composition tools and services based on a enhanced Java technology stack (back the time).
The official successor of SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (or any of the enhancements packages) has been SAP NetWeaver 7.3 (where we brougth various tools together back into one SAP NetWeaver codeline.) Nowadays we recommend the latest release: SAP NetWeaver 7.4 including the Enterprise Portal 7.4.
Customers & Partners who did not want to install the full SAP NetWeaver Java stack had the chance to only go with the Composition Environment - that contained selected portal core services. These are mainly used for application integration / launching scenarios and not supportin full enterprise portal (intranet / extranet) scenarios - that's why there is no KM included.
Hope this helps to get a better understanding.

    Thomas

  • Difference between Abstract portal Component and JSPDyn page.

    Hi Experts,
What is the difference between Abstract portal Component and JSPDyn page.
    Thanks,
    Jay.

    Hi,
The PDK provides two methods for creating a portal component:
    Abstract Portal Component
The Abstract Portal Component class offers a lean method for writing HTML commands to the Web client as well as for basic event handling. It is an implementation of the IPortalComponent, which is the central abstraction of the Portal Component API.
    DynPage
The Page Processor Component, which extends the Abstract Portal Component, returns a DynPage. It provides more sophisticated event handling. Controls that produce events (such as buttons and checkboxes) have an event attribute that contains the name of the event handling method. This event handling method is invoked by the DynPage when it occurs.
The JSPDynPage is an implementation of the DynPage and allows the use of the DynPage in combination with JSP (Java Server Pages).
The PDK documentation and examples focus on the DynPage. Easier event handling and the separatation of content development (JSP) from application development (Java) make the DynPage a better choice for components with interaction and changing content.

  • Differences between showing smartform in Portal and Backend

    Hi SAP Experts,
we have developed a smartform which should be opened by clicking on a button integrated in a BSP-Application. All seems to be ok except for one little piece of text that is not shown (Exactly, the text is a calculated value).
We tested the same smart form in backend-system and there the text is shown. There are no problems.
So is there a difference between showing the same smartform in enterprise portal at the one hand  and in sap backend at the other hand?

  • Similarities and Differences between HTML DB an Portal

Hi, I have several years of experience with Oracle Technology as DBA and Developer (Forms and Reports mainly). I'm excited and willing to familiarize with new technologies like Portal and HTML DB. I've been reading about both products and it seems they share similar principles in their arquitecture: both use dynamic page concepts, templates, and DB centric approach for building html apps.
It seems like HTML DB is like some sort of "little brother" version of Portal: you don't need and application server and others licence purchase for deploying database centric web apps using HTML DB.
So in short, can anyone portrait basic similarities and differences between these two products?.
    Thanks ...!

    "319071" and Doug:
The products have different purposes. Portal provides content aggregation, application integration and personalization. Together with the Oracle Application Server infrastructure you also get identity management capabilities such as a centralized LDAP-based user directory and Single Sign-On. HTML DB is a tool for rapid development of database centric web applications. Nothing more, nothing less. Portal allows you to bring together applications built using a variety of technologies. HTML DB is just one of those technologies that happens to be optimized for web development on an Oracle database.
Once you have built your application with HTML DB, you may choose to place a link to it on a portal page. You may even choose to make authentication seamless by making the HTML DB application a Single Sign-On partner application (see: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/htmldb/howtos/sso_partner_app.html). Or, you may want to display some data from a report developed in HTML DB inside a portlet (see: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/htmldb/howtos/omniportlet_index.html)
Granted, Portal does have database centric development capabilities (what used to be called WebDB), but they are not nearly as flexible as HTML DB's. HTML DB lets you control page flow while maintaining session state, has quite sophisticated report building capabilities such as column based sorting and pagination, form building capabilities such as declarative field level data validations, built in field level help, etc.

  • Difference between portal component and portal service?

    Hi I am kishore...
I worked on portal components but not on portal services... Would anybody tell the difference between the portal components and portal services...? What is a portal service..?
How we know which one to choose in the scenario.?
        Thanks in adavance

    Hi kishore,
A portal component is custom Java code that is executed according to user requests, and generates HTML output for display on the client.
    Portal components:
    Page builder, which assembles pages
Admin tools, such as logger, which is comprised of user interface messages.
    Pages
Technically, the page is also an iView. A page includes iViews or pages (nested) and Layout components
    iViews
There are two different isolation levels (iView types)
Embedded: iViews’ html is embedded as part of page html. iViews are called synchronically on the server, and retrieved in one response, to  the client (this is the page response)..  Each iView reloading reloads all iViews on page.
URL (Isolated): iViews are fetched by an IFRAME element in an “own” request. One response for the page followed by additional request-response for each iView (depending on browser 2-4 requests simultaneously).
    Portal Services:
A portal service is a component that offers a globally accessible function in the portal.
A portal service act as the middleware, that is, interfaces that are enabled to exchange procedures and data. They offer functionality to portal components, and other services.
There are two groups of portal services:
Portal services (part of the PRT)
    Caching
    Notification
    iView service
    Application Repository
    System Landscape
    Role, pages, worksets
    Web Services
    Unification service
Portal services (external to the PRT)
    Client Eventing
    URL generator
    Logger
    JCO client service
    Hope this helps.
