Difference between importing images from iphoto via drag & drop vs 'media' button

Hi (long time reader of this community, but my first post),
i'm creating a huge document (approximately 200 pages) in Pages (5.0.1, Using Maverick on a 27 inch iMac).
In the new version of Pages the "Media" button only produces small images that makes it difficult for me to choose which photo i want.
Is there a difference between importing images from iphoto drag & drop vs 'media' button.
Or is it better to just drag and drop the original jpegs (which i also have in a folder).
Is Pages the best program to use for this type of project? it is a profolio with about 4 photos, text, text boxes etc on each of the 200+ pages.
any help much appreciated.

Pages 4.3 might be up to the job. I very much doubt Page 5.0.1 is.  It lacks more than 90 features of its predecessor and is very buggy to boot. You probably have an iwork09 folder in your Applications folder. I suggest you trash Pages 5.0.1 and use Pages 4.3 until Apple makestheir new "Eddie Cue" ready for prime time (if, that is, they ever do).

  • Importing images from iPhoto to LightRoom 2

    Hello Community!
Would there be any difference in importing images from the latest iPhoto into the older version of LR2, then when I upgrade to the latest LR would there be any issues with those (iPhoto) images imported into LR2 into the newer LR?
Just trying to avoid any issues that may come up when transferring images.
    thank you in advance!
    ~A~

       Sounds perfect.
I use iPhoto at the moment to organize personal/candid images.
LR has gotten little use as I found myself jumping over to PS to retouch, etc..
But want to start getting familiar with LR so when I upgrade the learning curve won't be as high.
Thank you for following up. I appreciate you reply!

  • How can I import images from iphoto with the albums and folders?

How can I import images from iphoto without losing the albums and folders I already created?

In Organizer, you can choose File>get Photos and Videos>From iPhoto.
Importing from iPhoto'09: If in iPhoto, you organize your media using photo references, that is, the media actually does not reside inside iPhoto library package, and are referenced through original locations, Organizer does not create new copies of those media and just refer to the original location. but if your iPhoto media reside inside iPhoto library, Organizer creates a copy all media in your pictures folder, also imports albums and tags and other metadata.
Importing from iPhoto'011: In this case, Organizer always creates a copy of your photos in your pictures folder which resides inside iPohto package. It does not import the albums and other metadata like star rating, caption etc.
    Hope this information helps!

  • Importing Images from iPhoto 11 into Elements 12 Organizer

A friend is having lots of trouble trying to move his images from iPhoto 11 into the Elements Organizer, version 12.
Someone tried to do it for him and he has hundreds of folders in the organizer that don't make any sense and often have only one image in them.
To help him I would like to do two things:
    1.  How can we delete the entire import and start over?
    2.  What is the correct way to move these images into the elements organizer?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mary Lou
PS:  It occurs to me that perhaps he needs to export them to his hard drive and then import then into the Organizer.  Might this be correct? If it is, he will still need to get rid of all the folder there now.

To anwser the two questions you asked-
    1.  How can we delete the entire import and start over? : You may select all media in Elements Organizer grid (which he imported from iPhoto) and hit Delete key
    2.  What is the correct way to move these images into the elements organizer? : The correct way is what he already did. Actually the folder naming convention is same as that of iPhoto. If you see the package contents of iPhoto Library, these folders can be seen there as well. When importing in Elements Organizer, it creates a copy of the iPhoto folder structure and then imports in the catalog.
    Thanks

  • Importing images from iPhoto

I created an event in iPhoto containing 761 images and imported those images from my iPhoto library into Aperture.
After importing only 700 images where present in Aperture.
Where are the remaining 61 images?
What I found out so far:
In the iPhoto Library file there are really 761 imagefiles in the eventfolder.
When I select the event during import (shown as a folder in the import dialog) I can only see (and import) 700 images instead of 761.
    I use iPhoto 08 and Aperture 2.1

I am also having similar problems. I have several events in iPhoto that I tried to import into Aperture 2.1. When using the function presented upon starting Aperture (Import Your iPhoto Library) several photos under various events were not imported. I then tried to use the "Import" function to browse to the events under my iPhoto Library. This time several of the events did not show any photos at all under them for being able to import. I also tried to "drag-and-drop" events from iPhoto to Aperture, which resulted in files being copied over, but not in the "raw" format (.DNG) of the original master files (came over as .JPG instead). Any assistance in being able to trouble shoot this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Other notes: iPhoto Library has not been acting incorrectly (no corruption to the library is apparent).
Aperture imported the sample projects with the install correctly as well.
Hardware: MacBook (OS X 10.5.4) 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo
    Software: Aperture 2.1, iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.4)

  • How to import images from web via CSV in Indesign CS4?

    Hi,
I am using Indesign CS4 and i want to import pictures from my homepage.
I have a CSV export from a database with products and the url to the
product picture. I want to import the information for the products and
the picture via data merge. I added the @ in the name of the column
where the url to the pictures is. Everything works perfect when I use
a lokal path, but I need to get the pictures from the website.
Is it possible to import pictures from a website via CSV data merge?
What steps are needed for that?
Would be great if you could help me.
    Best Regards.

thank you all for your answers, that was what i thought.
yes, it starts with http://domainnaime.... it's from an extern webspace
then i will backup all pictures and put them in the local network and try over ip-address if that also won't work then I'll copy then locally
altough, it would be great if it works via ip-address

  • What is the best way to import pictures from iPhoto without compression?

I'm trying to create a slide show using Final Cut Pro. No, I'm not interested in using iDVD slide show function because it doesn't allow me to do a whole lot. I would like to add titles and music for certain segments with video inserted here and there.
Anyway, when I used the slide show function in iPhoto, exported it out as a quick movie file, and then imported it into Final Cut Pro, I noticed a significant downgrade in quality of images. It obviously looks different from when I play the slide show in iPhoto. What would be the best way to import pictures into Final Cut Pro without any compression?
    Thanks in advance.

I only see Share > Export.
Some versions of iPhoto work that way -it's just Apple moving things around.
what's the difference between exporting it from iPhoto then import it into FCP vs. just importing directly from FCP?
Your first post mentioned exporting a slide show from iPhoto -I assumed that is where your images are stored.
I do not want to import pictures one by one...
You don't have to. iPhoto will let you select as many as you want, or if the images are elsewhere, you can also select multiple files from FCP's Import dialog.
    ...and stick them together manually.
Editing is an art and involves some effort on your part. It is not an automated process. This method opens up far more possibilities, access to filters and color correction and the opportunity to use Motion for even more sophisticated animation.
But, it only allows me to export it as 720 x 480. The original size of my photos is 3872 x 2592. Is there any way I can create a quicktime file in the original size?
You should be aware that 3872 x 2592 is not a standard pixel aspect ratio that is used in video. The images will be resized to the Sequence settings that you set up in Final Cut Pro.
I have never used iPhoto to make a slideshow before, but I just gave it a try and was able to export one with the images in their native size, simply by typing the pixel dimensions into the boxes in the dialog window:
I don't have PhotoMagico myself, but it comes highly recommended by several of the forum regulars.
Perhaps one of them will see this discussion and help with your last question.

  • Aperture cannot import anything from iPhoto and other bugs!!

Aperture is buggy. Recently, I just updated Mac OS X to 10.4.5 and also updated iLife 06. Now I cannot import anything from iPhoto. I tried import images from iphoto or import iphoto library, both not working. I can import images from other directories but jut could not see anything display under iphoto library directory. Trying to use import iphoto library, click choose and then nothing happens.
If you create a smart web gallery, all photos will be automatically duplicated.

I used Pacifist.app to find iPhoto in the iLife '06 install package and then installed the app in the default location replacing the bundle that was there.
the normal method gave me an install error.
Thank you to the person who discovered this.
I was going nuts trying. I have 6 iphoto libraries with 30,000 photos in total and some would import fine and others would not. couldn't tell the difference between them and had forgotten the update. just got a new iMac intel and wasn't paying attention. Causality

  • How do I Export Raw images from Iphoto to Adobe Photo Elements 4

I recently purchased Photo elements 4 because I could import images from Iphoto in Raw format and work with them. Everything I have read and the instructional video sent to me by Adobe make it look and sound very easy but so far I have had no success.
I have been able to open Bridge and view photos from Iphoto so it seems to me that everything that I have in Iphoto is automatically transfered to Elements 4. However I can not find my Raw images. What am I doing wrong or failing to do and is there some logical sequence that I have to follow to import Raw images.
I am using a Nikon D200 and just to be safe I have been shooting so the images are saved both in JPEG and RAW.
Thanks for any help you can provide

    dakota8,
iPhoto and Adobe Bridge are incompatible, so you need to decide which one you want to use (for which photos). iPhoto is a database, with many flexible features for organizing your library and finding your photos. Bridge is a file browser with some organizing capabilities. You absolutely should not use Bridge or any other application (Finder included) to browse the files inside your iPhoto Library folder, as it will damage the iPhoto database. To verify, click on iPhoto's Help and read the section "About using the iPhoto Library."
If you want to keep your RAW files in iPhoto, then you'll need to open them from iPhoto. As Dave E said, this can be done by setting the iPhoto pref to export RAW files. You also need to set PE 4 as the external editor in iPhoto's preferences. With this setup, you can select photos using iPhoto, open the RAW files into PE 4, then edit. Now comes the wrinkle in the workflow. Normally, you would do a Save to cause your edited file to be saved back into the iPhoto library. This Save, not Save As, requires that the filename and extension stay the same. Works great with jpeg files. However, once you edit the RAW, the extension (and file format) must change. Save will not work, because any save at this point is treated like a Save As. So you have to Save As to a folder OUTside of your iPhoto Library, and then import it in as a new file. There will be no link between the edited version and its unedited RAW file. You could organize inside iPhoto to display the edited file beside its original RAW, or keep separate rolls for the originals and edits.
With that in mind, you might not want to save the RAW files in iPhoto at all. You could create your own filing system for them, which you would browse using Bridge. Upload using Image Capture to save your files to a folder of your choice. Once you edit the RAW files and save as another format, you could them import into iPhoto for cataloging or further editing. You'll just have to find the system that works best for you.
BTW, don't save your edited RAW files as Adobe RAW. I tried and discovered that iPhoto refuses to import them at all.
I have been able to open Bridge and view photos from Iphoto so it seems to me that everything that I have in Iphoto is automatically transfered to Elements 4.
There's no transferring involved at all. Bridge is rooting directly inside the iPhoto Library folder. Did I mention that it's best to avoid this?
However I can not find my Raw images.
When you import a file it is saved into the Originals folder. Your RAW files are there, along with any video clips you may have imported.
iPhoto automatically creates a jpeg version of your RAW files and stores it in the Modified folder. It has to do this in order to display the picture on your screen. With video clips, a jpeg of the first frame is created for display purposes.
I am using a Nikon D200 and just to be safe I have been shooting so the images are saved both in JPEG and RAW.
If you import both versions into iPhoto, then you have
    Originals - RAW
    Modified - jpeg
    Originals - jpeg
(Modified - jpeg - if you edit the jpeg version or if they are auto-rotated to portrait orientation)
I don't shoot in RAW, so I can't really comment about which workflow would be the most efficient. I just played with it long enough to realize that there is no easy way to do it.
    Regards.

  • Importing RAW images from iPhoto to Elements 8

I just successfully downloaded Elements 8 (the free trial version). I have an iMac, and until now have used iPhoto for all of my photo file storage and editing needs.
I need to import some of my original RAW files from iPhoto into Elements 8. How is this accomplished?
I got the images I wanted into Elements 8 by selecting all the images I wanted to import, then dragging and dropping. The result? The images all got imported into Elements 8, but they are showing up there as jPegs.
The images were originally brought into iPhoto as RAW files, and I never converted them into jPegs, so they should still be RAW files in iPhoto. Why, then, do they show up in Elements 8 as jPegs? And how do I import directly from iPhoto into Elements 8 and keep the images being imported as RAW files?
Any insights/help would be greatly appreciated.

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..

  • Trouble importing images from Canon EOS to iPhoto

When I returned from my daughter's wedding with about 400 irreplacable photos I discovered that I could not import photos from my Canon EOS to iPhoto on my iMac.  When I initially connect my camera to the computer the images display perfectly. However, when I click "import all" the downloaded images all appear completely blank (gray).  I don't have any difficulty importing images from my iPhone.

I have had a similar experience with a few greyed out images I did not bother too much because it was not important at the time. I was wondering if you could save them into another format or file and then try importing them from there.

  • If I barrow an image from iPhoto, that is drag it to another file or the desktop it seems to half disappear.  It still shows until I try to enlarge it then I get a triangle exclamation mark in the enlarged field, once I return to Photos or an Album it is

If I barrow an image from iPhoto, that is drag it to another file or the desktop it seems to half disappear.  It still shows until I try to enlarge it then I get a triangle exclamation mark in the enlarged field, once I return to Photos or an Album it is there.  However it can no longer be dragged into another file.  How can I recover these images?  Is there a better way to duplicate a image to locate in outside of iPhoto?
I never had this problem in previous versions of iPhoto.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the link to the original file.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Portrait-mode images from iPhoto get imported unrotated as landscape

    hi there
when i imported my iphoto library i noticed that portrait-mode (upright) images from iPhoto get imported unrotated as landscape.
if i had edited them in iPhoto i get in aperture a stack with the original wrongly in landscape and the edited one correctly upright.
seems to be the case that aperture does not handle the EXIF orientation tag properly.
anybody an idea what i can do?
    thanks, olli

So, iPhoto *does not* respect the Exif tag, just like I said. When it imports a photo so tagged it creates a new version and that's what you are seeing - tagged iPhoto Edited. The Original file (including the Exif rotation instructions) is not actually touched - non-rotated.
    This is by design.
Apps like iPhoto and Aperture don't respect these tags because of the apps that integrate with them. If, for instance, you pulled a Rotate-Tagged image from your Library to a Pages document then the result would be the wrong way round in Pages, as it, and most other applications, are not aware of Exif display tags.

  • When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture....

When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture 3 it shows two versions of each image. One is original and one is iphoto edited.  It shows this for every picture even if it was never edited in iphoto.  Has anyone ever experienced this?  Is so, what image should I use to edit in iphoto?

This is asked and covered a lot here, a search of the list will bring up numerous other threads covering this. Also the More Like This box on the right side of the page will show you other posts on this topic.
This post, Duplicates when importing from iPhoto is the most recent example.
Briefly iPhoto took even the most trivial change to an image as an edit and created a new image. The most common reason for this is rotated images.
As for which image of the two you want to keep, that's entirely up to you. If there is really no difference between the two then you can keep either it makes no difference.
The thread I linked to above will explain how to use Aperture's filters to gather up all of one or the other.

  • Import Photos from IPhoto into 3rd party Photo Book Maker?

Using BookSmart from Blurb, to make a photo book, this a GREAT piece of software BTW, I need to import photos from IPhoto and can't seem to see how do it? Not sure I even can. Any help??

Assuming the program has an Import option that brings up an Open/Save/Attach file browser window, look in the left hand sidebar for Photos, under the Media heading at the bottom. It will show you your iPhoto library. Probably easiest if you first create an album in iPhoto for the photos you think you are likely to use.
Alternatively, browse the Blurb site for an FAQ and find:
    http://blurb.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/blurb.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=74&p_sid=44cbAnHj&purl=
How do I use iPhoto pictures with BookSmart?
To view JPGs and PNGs that are stored in iPhoto, click the My iPhoto Images bar in the left content column of BookSmart. Choose which album you’d like to view via the dropdown menu, and then drag and drop the images into your book. BookSmart will only make copies of images you actually drag (or autoflow) to pages of your book.
