Difference between internal and external drive on Airport extreme

I have one of the original Airport Extremes and I'm wondering if the new software that comes with the new Airport (Time Capsule) will allow me to use it with an external drive for Time Machine. I know it currently doesn't work as currently configured, but I would think it would be a trivial matter to make it work, How about it Apple?

Presumably the only software which will ship with Time Capsule is "AirPort Utility" to configure Time Capsule.
Speculation on whether any version of Time Capsule's firmware will be compatible with the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is forbidden in this discussion area.
No one here knows and you could guess yourself to death. On one hand you would think Time Capsule is so similar to the square AEBS that it wouldn't be a problem. On the other hand even though the features are very similar, the square AEBS's firmware is not usable on the round AEBS.

    Hello,
While creating an organization, when do we use Internal and External? Basically whats the difference between these two options in the Work Structure screen while defining organizations?
    Thank You
    Kumar

    Hello,
    Just to add on information.
Internal organizations are such as departments, divisions, and sections
External organizations are such as benefits carriers, tax authorities, and recruiting agencies.Organization classification Payee Organization when defining an external organization that is the recipient of a third party payment from an employee, for example a court-ordered payment. You can then select this organization on the Personal Payment Method window when entering a third party payment method.
Generally we do not tag employees(Organization classification HR Organization) to external organizations.

  • Difference between internal and external session

    Hi experts,
I tried to read it many times but I am still very confused with it.
    1. Each logon through Sap Logon will create a new external session? New Mode created through /o will create another internal session in this external session? Is it OK?
    2. When are the data deleted from Sap Memory which are allocated through the command SET PARAMETER?
Thank you very much for your answers,

    2. When You Free Memory ID, it clear the data stored in Internal or external session, else internal session memory remains till you end your current session and external memory till you log out from the system.

Leopard.  Did a full restore from Time Machine.  Now I can't access my other internal and external drives.  I get the following error: The folder “Capture Video” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  I have repaired permissions pn the main harddrive.  When I try too click on a disk I get the previously stated error.  I can't even open up information to see what permission/access there is.  It simply will not let me see the content.  It shows the content of my main hard drive when I have clicked the other harddrive's name.

    Solved:
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"

  • Cannot install Yosemite as it keeps telling me both my internal and external drives are time machine backups

Cannot install Yosemite. Keeps telling me that both my internal and external
drives are backing up with TIme Machine. Any suggestions?

Is it actively backing up, or are you encountering a dialog stating that Yosemite cannot be installed because the disk is being used for Time Machine backups?
Read OS X: Cannot install on a volume used by Time Machine for backups
If for some reason you have a folder called Backups.backupdb at the root level of the hard disk on which you want to install Yosemite, move it to the Trash.

    Jorge,
With this type of Mapping (also called Reverse Mapping) you can map the context of an using component, to that of the used component.
You can find an example of this concept in WDA ALV: If you look at component SALV_WD_TABLE (which you declare as used when you intend to use ALV), you'll see that it has a node DATA declared as external. In your using component, you map your actual data node to this node.
This allows the ALV to leave the DATA node type open and so to be reused, adjusting it's structure depending on the using component's data.

Made a mistake! Have not used this in a while...Ext. mapping is the OTHER way...Using -map-> Used Fixed.

  • ITunes Settings for Media on External Drive via Airport Extreme...

iTunes Settings for Media on External Drive via Airport Extreme base station versus plugging directly into laptop.
My current configuration is that my iTunes Media (700gb) are all stored in an External Drive that's plugged into my Airport Extreme Base Station. This works great for me having wireless access to my iTunes external drive.
Whenever I need to back up that hard drive with Time Machine, I just plug it directly to my laptop...
But how do I let iTunes (or iTunes library) know that this is the same hard drive where all my media is stored when it's plugged directly into the laptop as opposed to trying to access it from my Airport Extreme network?

No there isnt any files call library in the folder i created I am now in the process of copying them back but I guess I will loose all my playlists and playcounts. I do have a Copy of my drive that i made with carbon copy cloner. So maybe it will be best to boot from there, restore and start again.
Chris it was just the media folder. I was following the instructions on the apple support page. Got to point 14 didn't get the warning but did seen to have a brand new itunes, so emptied the trash as they said expecting everything to be fine but it wasnt.

  • Splitting music files between internal and external HDs

I have a 300Gb external hard drive that I primarily use for storage/backup of rarely accessed files. I have seen a number of topics about moving your entire library to an external drive, but that's not what I want. I leave my external drive at home when I travel, and I don't want to leave all my music at home when I do.
Is there any way to set up iTunes so that part of my music library -- say, new/frequently accessed files reside on my PowerBook's HD and older files sit on the external HD? (Obviously I wouldn't ask iTunes to make the decision of what files go where, I would do that myself.)
    Thanks!

No, in a word. But you could create a second library on the external HD and switch between them as you need. You already have a link to the iTunes Library Manager.

  • I have lost space on my drives - both internal and external drives.

I am new to Mac.  I have a Macbookpro using 10.6.7.
I used boot camp to add a partition to my internal drive so I could add some much needed PC apps.  Before adding apps I decided to rough it and deleted the partition,  But when I use get info for the drive I do not see the space added back to the total available.  Is there something that I forgot to do?  The boot camp partition no  longer appears in the sidebar of finder.
For external drives I run get info on the single folder in the drive and it tells me that I am using 200G - it is a 650G drive.  When I run get info on the drive it tells me I have 39G available.  Where has the other 411G gone?  Could there be hidden files that I can't see?  If so, how do I make hidden files visible on a Mac.  Could it be backup files from the automatic backup (time feature) feature?  If so, would they be hidden files?
I really am having a hard time with this Mac but am learning - I keep pushing it and bought books and read anything I can get to learn but it is frustrating sometimes.  However, I refused to give it.  Sites like this one are a real blessing and I can't say enough about all the help I get from all of you.
    Thanks.

You should repair both disk with disk utility, open the program and click repair also repair your permissions. You can also use Omni Disksweeper to  check your file usage.

  • Using both internal and external drives for iTunes

    Hi
I know this is a basic question . I did a few searches and my head started spinning .
I've been using an external drive for my music but it only has 3GB left .
My internal drive has 12GB so I would like to start to use it for storage of music along with the external . (I'll be getting a new mac soon)
In Importing I have >Create file names with track number
    Advanced>Keep iTunes Music folder organized
This is on my Panther eMac with iTunes 4.7.1
thanks in advance for any help
    ----------bob
Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Panther eMac

The only thing you have to do is to click the 'Reset' button in Preferences>Advanced>General.
Your 'iTunes Music folder location' will be reset to the default location on the internal disk.
All new imported music will be stored there.
New added music will be stored there if you have the checked 'copy files to iTunes Music folder location when adding to library' in Preferences>Advanced>General.
When your new Mac arrives and you want to transfer the library, first copy the entire 'iTunes' folder (in ./Users/YourUsername/Music) from your eMac to the exact same location on the new Mac.
To transfer the iTunes folder, you can burn it on CD or DVD, but a lot easier is to put the eMac in Firewire target mode.
This article tells you how to do that:
How to use FireWire target disk mode
After the transfer of the iTunes folder is completed, connect your external drive and run iTunes.
The new Mac will have a newer iTunes version and it will take some time to convert the old library format to the new format.
Once all works OK and If you want all your music on your new Mac, use the 'Consolidate Library...' command from the Advanced menu in the menubar.
All music from the external disk will be copied to the internal disk.
    Hope this helps.

  • Internal and External Drive Recording Sequences

I have a QIP 7232 MR DVR (500 MD internal drive) with an eSata 1T WD drive attached.  This external drive is one of those specified by VZ for this application.  The system operates according to specifications and performs quite well.  Just thought I'd pass along a recent observation about where content is recorded on the system.
As is well known, a setup like mine will record content to the external drive preferentially until it is full.  When that happens, the system will record content on the internal drive.  However evidently that's not always the case, as I learned recently while recording  the French Open tennis tournament.
The program is being broadcast on Tennis channel HD, ESPN2, NBC, and probably a few other channels.  I have chosen to record as much of the tournament as possible using the "Record Series" option for all channels.  This results in quite a bit of recording time, somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 plus hours per day (20 hours a day on selected weekend days).  That's almost more tennis than I can stand to watch, but so be it.
What I noticed is that the system does not in fact record exclusively to the external drive until it is full, but instead records some of the material to the internal drive well before the external drive is exhausted.  This is the first time I've observed this behavior since setting up the equipment.
Some of the recordings are 9 hours long, so it appears that the system is taking that into account somehow and trying not to get into a situation with insufficient space on the external drive.  However when this recording pattern was first observed, my external drive was showing about 80 hours HD content and roughly 53 % used capacity.  It's possible that at some time during the last few days there actually was much more recorded material on the external drive and it defaulted to the internal drive for that reason.  If that's the case, I did not notice it at the time, but in any case I don't recall ever seeing an indication of higher than approximately 73% on the external drive.  I make it a practice to record selected material to DVD if I want to hold it permanently.
As I said all's working well but I just thought I'd pass along this apparently anomalous behavior.

I want to share the space on external drive with all users on Time Capsule network and at the same time I want to be the only one who can access the internal TC disk. • Library on an External Drive via Airport Extreme - STAY AWAKE!

Sorry for the cross-post, but this is related to both iTunes and the Airport Extreme.
I've gone around in circles on this for a few months now, but wanted to see if anyone had any new ideas. I have a 1TB drive attached to my Airport Extreme that holds my iTunes library on it. I have had some stability issues with the disk as follows, as well as a couple of nagging problems.
Once the disk is mounted and iTunes starts, the disk remains available as long as iTunes is playing music. If iTunes stops playing music but stays open, the disk will go to sleep and will become unavailable to Finder. About 50% of the time the disk can be remounted by selecting from the AE shared directory, but often the disk hangs and cannot be accessed any further. I have to either reboot the disk or even reboot the AE as well in order to get everything working again. I sometimes have the same issue with a secondary AE attached disk that is used for Time Machine backups, so I suspect that it is related to something in OSX that insists that external disks sleep in this manner. Overall, my experience with these AE-attached disks has been sketchy at best. They are fantastic when they work, but something in the mix is causing communication between the MacBook, the external disk, and the AE to just go haywire at times.
    Ideally, this would happen:
    1) All external disks would mount automatically on startup
    2) As long as iTunes was open (even if not playing), the disk would remain mounted and available.
    3) The disk(s) would only sleep and/or dismount if directly instructed to do so.
Any thoughts that the gurus have would be appreciated. Seems like I might be able to do some of this through scripting, but I am not sure where to start on something like that.
    Thanks in advance.

In addition to Bob's solution, I use the following Apple Script for mounting my attached HDD to the desktop without it opening. That is, it just shows up as an icon on the desktop.
    try
mount volume "afp://<basestation_name>.local/<disk_volumename>" as user name "<enter disk username>" with password "<enter disk password>"
    end try
I then run this script as an application from my user profile's Login Items pane. (ref: System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items)
