Difference between Ipod mini 1st Generation & 2nd Generation?

Wondering the difference between a 1st generation and 2nd generation ipod mini? If you had a choice which would you pick and why? thanks for your help!

Hi harpo,
see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300850 for a full description and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688#ipodmini for an illustration of visual differences.
As well as the differences already mentioned, they came with different accesories (the original model came with a FW charger and FW cable as well as the usb cable) . The original model can also be used with earlier versions of OSX than the later one.
Cheers

Where can I buy a charger for an ipod mini 1st generation

I believe that is a 4th gen iPod.  When you say "charger," do you mean the USB docking cable?  Or do mean a USB power adapter that you connect to a wall outlet to charge the iPod?
If it's the docking cable, it's the standard USB docking cable

If you happen to have a Mac with a FireWire port, the 4th gen iPod actually ALSO works (better) over a FireWire connection.  But you'll have to look for an old FireWire docking cable on eBay (or other online source).
If you are asking about a USB power adapter, this is the lowest power version from Apple, and it works with the 4th gen iPod.

  • Compatible USB cord with iPod mini 1st Generation model number A1051

    Hi,
I've looked everywhere for a place that sells compatible USB cords with the 1st generation mini circa 2005 and can't find one including the Apple store---in the store some seem to say a particular one works and some doesn't, there is conflicting information. Can you help?

    Hello BMSprint,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
A cable such as this one will work. There are several more options available on Amazon. If it's says its compatible specifically with the iPod Mini, then it more than likely is. It might not hurt to read the comments and reviews though to make sure you are choosing a quality product.

    Hope this helps a bit.

  • Ipod mini 1st generation and nike+

Does anybody know if the 1st generation ipod mini has the necessary tools to use it with the Nike+ running system? I'm interested in buying one solely for that purpose. If it isn't, what is the first ipod which has the software?

  • Constant low battery warnings for ipod mini 1st Generation

my ipod mini is doing something weird. When the Battery Meter says it's full, it displays this message that says "No Battery Power Remains, Please plug it into the Power Outlet."
I have already tried the 5 R's and it didn't work.
I sent it into apple, and they found no problem and just sent it back.
I don't know what to do now

The Mini isn't listed, and looking at the prices Apple charges for replacing batteries on current models, you might be best off just buying a new iPod.

  • What is the size difference between iPod nano 1st gen vs 5th gen?

I'm trying to buy an armband for my 1st generation iPod nano to use at the gym and every one I find on Amazon says its for 5th generation. Is it the same size? Will my iPod fit?
If not, can you please suggest me an inexpensive, but good armband to use. Thank you!

    Hi Addicbaddic,
Here is a link to the Apple page that shows all of the iPod Nano generations. You will be able to see which one is yours and compare it to the 5th gen....

  • What is the difference between ipod minis and shuffles

I just wanted to know what the difference is between the two. Which one is better?

Here is what everymac.com has to say: www.everymac.com
The iPod shuffle, is substantially different from other iPod models. Rather than having a hard drive that can hold 1,000 or more songs, the iPod shuffle uses 512 MB or 1.0 GB of "solid state" Flash Memory that can hold approximately 120 or 240 songs (on the 512 MB and 1.0 GB versions respectively) in a tiny (3.3 by 0.98 by 0.33 inch) case with an integrated USB connector, but without a display. Instead of using a "thumbwheel" or "ClickWheel" for navigation, the iPod shuffle uses a simple control pad on the front and a "slider" on the back to toggle between playing the songs in order or at random.
In general, the iPod was designed to allow people to carry their entire music collection, or the vast majority of it, along with other files, and the iPod shuffle was designed for more casual use at a much lower price.

  • Battery iPod mini first generation

I have an iPod mini 1st generation, and was wondering if I took it o an Apple store if they could replace the battery?

The battery is quite common and they will repair it if they get the battery in stock.
In case not, you can google "iPad Mini" battery replacement, I am sure you will find some.
DIY?, it is quite tough for me for iPad Mini, I did break one. So ask a shop to do for you if you are not too sure about it

  • My iPods touch 1st and 2nd generation don´t show up anymore in iTunes after upgrade to iTunes 10.5 and MacOsX 10.6.8 Snow. What can I do??

I was using iPods touch 1st and 2nd generation together with iPod Shuffle 1st generation with inferior versions of iTunes and MacOS X without any problem. After I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6.8, the iPod Shuffle still appears in iTunes normally, but the iPods don´t appear. Its not a problem of the USB because because it happens with two different USB cables which worked just fine before. Any idea how I could get the iPods working again?? Thanks a lot!!!

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen, MacOS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.5, and my iPod still works when I plug it in.
So it's not the software, because mine still works. Do your iPods have a lock on them? If so, try unlocking them and then plugging them in, usually when your iPod has a passcode lock it won't show up in iTunes until you unlock it.

Try putting it into "Disk Mode" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Then with it in this mode connect it to the PC and try to run the latest iPod updater to do a restore and update software if you have the option. the latest iPod updater is 2006-03-23 and can be downloaded here http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

  • Mine is ipod touch 1st generation..its very hard to find the accessories, where can i find it?

mine is ipod touch 1st generation..its very hard to find the accessories, where can i find it? and some application couldnt work, for example: nike+

What "accessories" are you looking for?
The Nike+ app now requires iOS 4, and since that version of iOS won't run on a 1st-generation iPod touch, you will not be able to run that app.
    Regards.

    Hello Jane Benstock,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
It sounds like the next best step to take would be to reset the iPod Shuffle.
Check out this article named Resetting iPod shuffle found here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655.

  • Ipod touch 1st generation battery lifespan?

how long does the average lifespan of the ipod touch 1st generation last? ive had mine since around the time it first came out, i havnt noticed any loss in battery life at all but i was just wondering how long it would take before i would actually have to replace the battery, and if i have to send it in to replace the battery will anything happen to my songs/apps/videos/pictures?

The music is stated by apple to last 22 hours on a full charge for music and 5 hours for movies. The battery efficiency goes down to 80% after about 400 cycles, but your battery could bust at any time, but don't worry about it. It'll be awhile till your battery has to be replaced. If you replace the battery it won't effect any of the content on your iPod as long as it's all on iTunes.
