Difference between Oracle 8.1.7 and Oracle 8.1.6
Dear all,
I introduce myselves as Lakshmikanth,Software Engineer,India.
I need help from you all.
In one of our client sites,Oracle Database server (Oracle 8.1.6 ) is installed in Sun Sparc Solaris and the clients are to be installed in Windows 98.
Unfortunately,we dont have Oracle 8.1.6 Client. We are planning to install Oracle 8.1.7.
What may be the results if I use Oracle 8.1.7 Client and access the Oracle 8.1.6 Server ?
Note:
1. I am not using PL /SQL Gateway.
2. No XML Transactions.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Looking for comparison between MS Visual Source Safe and Oracle SCM
Hi,
I am looking for some comparison between MS Visual Source Safe and Oracle SCM.
What I need is technical feature comparison (not just marketing comparison stating that Oracle SCM is better for everything is stored in the very reliable Oracle database(although this is a good point)).
Any help in this area will be helpfull.
Best regards,
Mihail DaskalovThanks you for your answer,
I like very much Oracle SCM, which I use extensively.
I have very little experience with MS VSS (only on my local machine). I have never tested it in a network environment with multiple developers.
I would like to convince other developers to switch to Oracle SCM, but I need to know what to tell them.
I'm actually both a developer and DBA, and I do like the safety the Oracle Database offers for storing files inside.
I like very much the opportunity to connect with Oracle Repository Navigator from a remote location to my database through Connection Manager and to be able to work with my projects. (There is an issue with this configuration due to the JDBC driver used I'm unable to compare files).
But to convince people I need to know more about the differences between MS VSS and Oracle SCM.
I would appreciate if any of the developers share experience with VSS and SCM.

Difference between ALC Forms ES module and ALC Output ES module
Hi,
I would like to know if anyone has implemented just the Adobe Output ES module in any of the projects.
I am into a project where we are integrating ALC with one of the insurance application for document generation and correspondence generation.
Confused whether to go with Forms ES module, Output ES module or both?
Can someone please throw light on these modules? I know there is info on the website but would like to know the advantages and disadvnantages of using either one of the module or both?
If just Output module is used how will the insurance application interact with ALC?Jianghuai,
The link you have gotten from Ivan provides great information sources.
Note that those are not four different distributions, meaning linux-based operating systems, all are RHEL -- check out the FAQ, items 1 and 2. I would say main differences between family members are licensing and support offerings or subscriptions. AS, ES for "server" and WS, Desktop for the "desktop".
"ES is licensed for servers with up to 2 CPUs and 16GB of main memory while AS is licensed for servers of any size and any architecture."
Oracle products are generally not supported on the desktop variants. -
Difference between use of decision table and if/then in business rules
Hello ,
Could some one please explain me difference between use of decision table and if/then in business rules in short.
- ShirishHi,
They are equivalent, pretty much what you can do with a decision table you can also do with if/then...
However, decision tables provide automated features that can reduce the number of required rules, as compared to the if/then rules (this is called rule coalescing).
Have a look on this document... Search for 5.1.1 What is a Decision Table?

Difference between SYNC/ASYNC, LGWR/ARCH, and AFFIRM/NOAFFIRM?

I believe information about the terms mentioned are well explained in the document link shared by Suntrupth so I won't explain all of them. But one thing that I believe is requiring a little clarity and that's the use of the term LGWR with the SYNCH and ASYNCH. The usual understanding is it's the LGWR that sends the message to the LNS which further would forward the change vectors to the standby site. But actually its always the LNS that reads the change vectors directly from the log buffer. That's the reason that 11g docs no longer mentions the keyword LGWR along with the SYNC and ASYNC.

Hi,
Please let me know about difference between sm$ts_avail, sm$ts_free and sm$ts_used?
As far as i know, sm$ts_free shows same free space as the dba_free_space.
But what about sm$ts_avail and sm$ts_used?
Thanks.Views you are talking about are now almost paleolithic dictionary structures of oracle rdbms, still present in the newer releases probably only due to
the some sort of internal compatibility and/or dependencies that are very likely too complicated to be removed and left out 'just like that' from the future releases.
Werner is absolutely right, but it seems you forgot to mention those few relevant and often very useful informations that are here so often requested abd missed by the OP...maybe you were under the impressions of the '$' objects.
Those objects you asking about are views that were originally installed and created with the [Server Manager|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/A57673_01/DOC/dcommon/oin/indexj.htm] installation.
I guess they are still somehow related to now-days similar system management tools like for example Oracle enterprise manager or Grid control.
Differences can be observed in several ways :
One would be:

What is the difference between a tablespace, a segment and an extent ?
What is the difference between a tablespace, a segment and an extent ? Please explain in layman terms since I'm a total newbie to Oracle.
Regards
GonyHi,
These are logical structure of database
1. Tablespace : A database is divided into logical storage units called tablespaces, which group related logical structures together. For example, tablespaces commonly group together all application objects to simplify some administrative operations.
2.Segments
Above extents, the level of logical database storage is a segment. A segment is a set of extents allocated for a certain logical structure. The following table describes the different types of segments.
Segment Description
Data segment
Each nonclustered table has a data segment. All table data is stored in the extents of the data segment.
For a partitioned table, each partition has a data segment.
Each cluster has a data segment. The data of every table in the cluster is stored in the cluster's data segment.
Index segment
Each index has an index segment that stores all of its data.
For a partitioned index, each partition has an index segment.
Temporary segment
Temporary segments are created by Oracle when a SQL statement needs a temporary work area to complete execution. When the statement finishes execution, the extents in the temporary segment are returned to the system for future use.
Rollback segment
If you are operating in automatic undo management mode, then the database server manages undo space using tablespaces. Oracle Corporation recommends that you use "Automatic Undo Management" management.
3. Extents
The next level of logical database space is an extent. An extent is a specific number of contiguous data blocks, obtained in a single allocation, used to store a specific type of information. -
What is the difference between UIButton's [Custom] Background and Image ?
What is the difference between UIButton's [Custom] Background and Image property ?
They seems to both do the same thing...and they both works...why would I prefer one over the other ?Ok, your company pays for support, and has a CSI number. Presumably, other people at the company already have MOS accounts? If so, one of them is probably the administrator for your company's CSI. When you go to http://support.oracle.com/ and open a new account, you'll provide your email, and your company's CSI. At that point, whoever has been designated administrator for your CSI will get an email from Oracle, letting them know you've created an account w/ their CSI, and asking them to accept or reject your account request. If they accept it, your account will then be functional, and you'll be able to login to MOS.
So, find out who the admin is for your CSI, talk to them, go from there.
Hope that helps,

Tinu.Hi;
But, to be specific i need to know the functionality difference between these releases for Financial modules. As I said AFAIK there are no fuc. difference between 12.04 and 12.0.6.
Lets say, some major/minor functionality has been added to modules like AP, GL, CM. which we need to take care while migrating the objects. When you apply 12.0.6 patch it could be change some field in forms, its mean if you have custom code than some field can be add or remove wiht new patches and your custom related object can be fail.
Please see:
Upgrade 12.0.4 to 12.0.6
difference between Patchset 12.0.4 ( R12.IBE.A.4) and 12.0.6 (R12.IBE.A.6)
