Difference between Oracle Application Express and Oracle Forms/Reports

hi guys,
i have just use oracle apex to create some report generation tools through the web. know that this is what is known as html db in the past.
however, i have not really touch oracle forms and reports before, neither have i really seen how they work.. but soemhow i feel oracle report/forms seems to be more.. then this oracle apex.
it includes integration with web services, java and pl/sql .
but i still cant really figure out what is the actual general main difference ?
is it that for oracle forms there can be some programming logic inside , whereas for apex , it is just using what is available from what oracle provides ..
i am read oracle form white paper, but seriously, i am not a very web guy. it has alot of components that i am not familiar with.
so i hope you guys can just give me a more general rough idea.
regards,
Noob.

Hi, my .05$
... most Forms & Reports users will tend to be old installed base customers using applications developed many years ago in F&R such as insurance company cores and even banking cores. Going from client/server F&R6 to "web" F&R10g is costly as you have to license an application server and most likely need to migrate to recent versions of the DB in case the customer is still on oracle 8 (common occurrence). So many customers opt. to not migrate or to simply invest in new web enabled solutions.
Using the migration tool f&r installed base will have an easier job of migrating and at a price of whatever DB edition they are using and probably be able to do it with the same people who maintain their f&r systems provided they learn a bit about web technologies.
what might be interesting to see is performance perception of users on f&r vs. apex...

  • Terminology differences between MSSQL 2005/2008 and Oracle 11g

I'm looking for some articles/books/webinars/blogs which discuss the terminology differences between MSSQL 2005/2008 and Oracle 11g in terms of database concepts. I have found this article http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/SQL+Server/67007 so far.
    Thanks.

Thanks sb92075. Those returned results are almost all related to compare the features/functionalities between MSSQL and Oracle not to distinguish the terminology differences between them.

  • Difference Between Web application design and Report Designer

    Hi,
I have searched in the forum as well i Google it but still i am not clear the difference between Web application Designer and report Designer , why especially we go for WAD ? and  what is not possible in Report designer which we can do in WAD  Please some one explain me that would be great helpful to me. i am having lot of confusion in this issue.
    thanks,
    Gal

    Hi,
The Report designer is completely for formating of your query and results. Here you have the flexibility to design your query(one/more) results in your own way.
The WAD is for displaying various web items at one short for a single/multiple query. And here you have the flexibility to do the XML coding on the web items, but not as much you have the flexibility on Report Designer.
But, Report designer will have more performance issues than WAD. So, generally it helps when you need extreme formating of your reports.
    Hope this clears your doubt.
    Regards,
    Srinivas.

  • Any software differences between new airport express and extreme?

I was wondering if there are any features or configuration differences between the two, such as configuring VPN passthrough.
The only difference I can see is using the USB for hard drive use.
Also, do you think the performance will be similar.  I know the time capsule actually rated slower than the extreme even though they use similar hardware.

You can find all the differences between the AirPort Express and Extreme in this website > http://www.apple.com/compare-wifi-models/

What are the differences between a character mode and bitmap mode reports

    hi saikumar
In Oracle Reports Designer, character mode, the
APPLICATIONS STANDARDS REQUIRE the report to be designed in
ONE FONT/ ONE CHARACTER SIZE. Character mode reports
generate ASCII output. In ASCII you cannot dynamically
change the font and character size. The standard is in
effect so a report prints as identically as possible from
    both conventional and postscript printers....

  • The Best Releas Of Oracle Application Server 10g (BI Forms&Reports)

    hi all
i am asking u to loock with me to the best solution for my environment
becuse we want to upgrade our Environment work :
    Current Work Environment:
    - Oracle Database Server R 8i as (database)
    - Oracle Developer 2000 as (Forms & Reports)
our comunity is welling to upgrade our work to 10g
and we are asking for the best release that we can use to a complish the best senario for our environment .
i have the current seggestion :
    - Upgrade the database to R 10gR2 (Export&Import).
    - Install & Migrate the developer side as Infrastruction Appliction Server 10gR(10.1.2.0 ) .
    - Install the Middle Tire as BI Forms&Reports & Migrate our whole system to the new Release using developer Suite 10g .
i am asking you'r seggestions & Best Bractice in my case .
also what is the most Stable relase we can use .
    thanks .

    Hi Ibrahim,
You can do an easier installation by only using base release of 10.1.2.0.2. What I stated would be good practice:
    By * DB 10.2.0.3 ---- > u mean (Database Version) => Yes, use Database version 10.2.0.3
By * Identity Management 10.1.4.0.1 (OID/SSO) -----> u mean (Application Server infrastructure) => Yes, use Identity Management 10.1.4.0.1 instead of the infrastructure on Application Server 10.1.2.0.2
By * Application Server 10.1.2.0.2 -----> u mean (Middle Tire Forms&Report Services) => Yes, use Application Server 10.1.2.0.2 as middle-tier. When installed, upgrade it to 10.1.2.2 (with the latest patchset)
By * Patch Application Server DB client to 10.1.0.5 ----> u mean what? => Before you upgrade AS to 10.1.2.2 it's mandatory to upgrade the Database client software in the Application Server 10.1.2.0.2 home to 10.1.0.5. Default is 10.1.4. You'll see database client version by for instance starting SQL*Plus.
For your Developer (Forms) upgrade: Forms 4.0/4.5 - 6i -> 10g. See: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/htdocs/upgrade/index.html. If you have tons of Forms, then I recommend using a tool like the great PITTS.CON (http://www.pitss.com/en/pcon/index.htm).

  • Difference between Real Application Testing and Application Testing Suite?

We need to find out average time to execute critical reports. Some reports takes about 24 hours to execute. We want to predict the times of future reports after benchmarking our current DB.
(1.) Which of the 2 should we use (RAT or ATS)?
(2.) What are the differences between the 2?
(3.) Can these products be used in both 10g and 11g DBs?
(4.) Are these 2 ''options'' that come with the DB? or
(5.) Do we have to purchase them separately and install separately?
(6.) Does these tools have Windows interfaces?

    Thanks aamat.
Most of our DBs are and will be in 10g. I think it will take at least a year or two to move to 11g. So we are basically stuck with 10g.
So you’re saying we need a 11g DB to run RAT. I.e. you have to install RAT in a 11g. That wont suite our requirements since our DBs are in 10g.
About ATS: The most demanding/frequent requirement from our prospective customers is:
    > "We create an ad-hoc report query. How do we find out the time it will take to execute it?"In order to solve this we are hoping to suggest this to our customers:
1.) Replicate the servers and DB (with real data) in another identical machine.
2.) Select about 10 report queries which normally takes a long time to execute.
3.) Execute them and get the times (For single and multiple users).
4.) These will form the benchmark.
*[Q1.]* Now, can our prospective users, use ATS do this. I.e. Can they, the users on their own operate ATS (of course after giving them training)?
*[Q2.]* Can ATS use the output of the previous (i.e. benchmark) SQL queries (with live data) and if given another SQL, estimate the time it will take to execute it?
-- i.e. can ATS compare the tables, SQL query and times of past results and give us an estimate for our new query?
*[Q3.]* If this is not possible in ATS can it be done it RAT? In this case we will have to demand that they upgrade to 11g.

  • Difference between G/L Balance and Inventory Audit Report

    Hi All,
while checking the G/L ledger for Inventory account and the Inventory Audit report, there is a difference between the amounts posted. The closing balance till 31/03/09 is fine but afterwards the balance is not matchin at all. I hav tried to check between various posting dates but still there are differences. Any suggestions why there are differences and how should i check them??
    Thanks in advance,
    Joseph

The GL account and the Inventory audit report will not tie for a couple of reasons:
    - You have posted directly (JE) to your Inventory account.  These amount since they are NOT tied to a Item in a transaction will not appear in the Inventory audit report.  The Inventory account(s) should be treated like a control account (enthough they
cannot be set as one in SAP B1) and should not be posted to directly outside of the Item Inventory Transaction (GRPO, AP Inv, AR INV, DN, AR CM, AP CM, etc...) I have alos seen these posting when GL determinations are setup incorretly or when users use the inventory account in Stock Posting (staock taking) transactions
    - you have legacy issues resulting in audit report entries relating back to pre SP01 2005 days.
To get these details analyzed by SAP for free along with the recomended corrections please contact your partner for a free Inventory Verification analysis   Your partner can take a copy of your DB backup and create a support message under SBO-MM-IVC and SAP support will analyse these differenes and show you the recommended changes.
    hope this helps

  • Best beginner book for Oracle Application Express?

    Hello Dear members,
I've got 12 years of experience developing Oracle applications using Oracle Forms and PL/SQL, that bit I'm an expert.
But I'm torn between which book to buy to learn Oracle Application Express.
The Expert Oracle Application Express vs Oracle Apex Cookbook is my main competition.
I'm already doing the 2 day Developer guide, but want to go in a bit deeper.
    All of your suggestions welcome.
    Thanks
    Ravi

    Ravi,
If you are not at all familiar with Application Express i would reccomend getting Beginning Oracle Application Express 4 because you will find that Pro Oracle Application Express 4, Second Edition, Expert Oracle Application Express and Oracle Apex Cookbook assume you have more of an unserstanding and some parts wont make sense. I had friend of mine get an advanced book and then immediately go back and get the beginner book because it just didnt have much meaning to him.
    Thanks,

  • Difference Between Application Express and XE

    Hello
I am new and would like to know what is the difference between Application Express(Apex) and XE?
Is XE a standalone version and Apex is more like an enterprise editiion?
    Thanks

    read on http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/apex_and_xe.html
Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Oracle Database XE) includes Oracle Application Express (Oracle APEX) release 2.1, a declarative, graphical development environment for creating database-centric Web applications. Oracle APEX is installed in Oracle Database XE as the primary tool for managing the database and building Web-based applications. The majority of the administration tasks of Oracle Database 10g Express Edition can be performed using the administrative features of Oracle APEX, such as monitor database activity and manage database users, storage, memory and database objects. The simple Web-based interface enables users with minimum Oracle experience to easily manage the database. Application Express is pre-installed and fully configured, and it is immediately available after installation of Oracle Database 10g Express Edition.
Is XE a standalone version and Apex is more like an enterprise editiion?XE is oracle database (free) it for test or using on limit (to 4GB of user data, use up to 1GB of memory, and use one CPU on the host machine)
APEX is application (Web) can integrate on Oracle Database Enterprise, Standard and .... RAC

  • What is diff between oracle application server and weblogic server?

what is the exact difference between oracle application server and weblogic application server?

The difference between Oracle Application Server AND WebLogic Server has been discussed in a lot of forums dated 2008 and earlier comparing OAS10g with WebLogic10.0/WebLogic9.2
But, now since Oracle has taken over WebLogic, this is not really important.
Now, OAS has no further releases post 10g. WebLogic Server will be the Oracle's strategic application server going forward.
So, if your query is for choosing one of them for a new environment, you are better of with WebLogic Server 10.3.6 OR WebLogic Server 12g
As we will not have further releases of OAS and also OAS10g will be end of life soon, we recommend Oracle WebLogic Server.
If you still want to know the differences, here is one such old oracle documentation link that talks about it
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B10467_16/migrate.904/b10425/asmwl02.htm
