Difference between Reader, Pro and Preview

I'm running Leopard 10.5.7 with Preview. I also have Acrobat Reader 9.1 and Acrobat Pro 9.2 installed. What is the difference between the 3 programs? My default when opening PDF's from Safari is Acrobat Pro. I can open PDF's just fine with Pro. But when I launch the Reader it asks me if I want to use that program as the default.
I also like the ability to use the built-in Preview function because it seems to use less resources (ram) than Acrobat Pro.
Can someone explain the difference of the 3 programs and what the advantages of one over the other are?
I create PDF's all the time with In Design and know that with Reader I can't save any changes to the PDF I can only print and read from them.
Do I even need Reader installed or is this overkill?

I would say it depends on what (if anything) you need to do when viewing the PDF files in one of those 3 applications.
Acrobat Pro: Provides useful tools in examining the document as well as making some basic corrections. These tools include Output Preview (color warnings, ink viewing, object inspector) and Preflight.
Preview: Has some limitations when viewing documents. Most notably, overprinting cannot be simulated but there may be others. Some transparency blending modes are displayed quite as expected either.
Reader: Lighter weight than Acrobat Pro, but I am not aware of any viewing limitations as compared with Acrobat Pro (and it does support simulating overprinting in viewing)

  • Difference between Mac Pro and Mac XServer

    Hi,
I wanted to know if there is any difference between Mac Pro and the Mac XServer - at the OS level? Meaning, if I design an application on Mac Pro would it run seamlessly on XServer or do I need to care about a few things.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Abhishek

Both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server are presently at the Tiger 10.4.10 release, with Mac OS X Server having various added pieces and features, and having a few structural and configuration differences.
    * Do both of them support the ipv6 protocol
Yes; both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server both offer IPv6.
    * do both of them support LDAP and PAM based authentication
Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server have LDAP support, yes. Mac OS X Server has LDAP authentication, DNS and a variety of other servers built in. Mac OS X is configured as a client, though there is the Apache web server.
Haven't looked for PAM for either platform.
    * Do both of them support the same level of Java ( I understand we need 1.5 or higher for Tiger / Leapord)
Java itself is the same on both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server, though Mac OS X Server has server-oriented pieces of Java present. And it's still write once, debug everywhere.
No Leopard questions are permissible here at this time; Leopard details are NDA.
    * Do the compilers (gcc) have different compilation options - maybe xServer uses some better optimized flags that handle large volumes of data and network traffic.
AFAIK, there are no differences in gcc defaults. Nor would I expect any. Handling volumes of data is left to the programmer. (I'm not even sure how a compiler author would even implement that sort of difference.)
    * Is there any difference in the behavior of the way the libraries ...
I'd expect the exact same behavior the programmer requested would occur with both platforms.
Now as for what I expect is the root of your question, yes, you'll likely want to test your application on both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server software platforms. There can exist very hard to predict details such as cases where dual NICs or the aforementioned directory differences that have tossed a few applications off the rails and into the weeds; have caused applications to fail.
You can choose to install Mac OS X Server on a Mac Pro. Probably the 10-client, because you probably aren't planning to serve piles of clients from the Mac Pro.
An overview of Mac OS X Server is here:
    http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/specs.html
Now as to whether or not I would expect run-time differences, no. But I've been at this way too long and have chased way to many weird bugs to make any promises here.

  • Is there a difference between Logic Pro and Logic Pro X?

Maybe this is a stupid question, but is there a difference between Logic Pro and Logic Pro X?
    Already thx!

    Hi
    Short answer: No
    Longer answer:
Logic Pro X is the latest release version of the DAw known as "Logic Pro". Previous versions were: Logic Pro 9, Logic Pro 8 etc.
There was also a "Logic Express" (no longer available) which, though similar to Logic Pro, was missing a few features of Logic Pro in it's later versions)
    This might add more details:

What is the difference between Read Later and Read Later Fast?

I have been...they both seem to do the same thing. Since they both seem to also be Mozilla software and not intended to compete with each other, I'm thinking I'm missing some advantage that one has over the other.

  • Fixing cosmetic differences between Reader 8 and 9

When Reader 9 starts up, by default it clicks the Highlight Fields toggle button. In Reader 8, this was unchecked by default.
In general, this is a good thing. It makes it much more obvious to end-users which documents are fillable/editable PDFs, and which are plain PDFs that can only be printed.
However, in some cases, where your user-base is already expecting fillable forms, this means that all your carefully color-coordinated forms now dont look as good on startup.
Another issue is when you have required fields, which show up with red borders - apart from looking a bit garish, our usability testing has indicated that it can make new users freak out, thinking theyve already made a mistake before theyve even done anything.
This is compounded if you have fields with caption above the field, which in Reader 9 is rendering as two red borders.
There is a very simple way to preserve the Reader 8 behavior. Here's how:

  • DVD Rendering and Burning: differences between Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements

I am landscape photogapher and wish to either create slide shows in Premerie or import them to Premiere  from H264 1080 quicktime files generated by Ligthroom 3.  I do not do frame by frame video editing.  My only goal in using Premiere is to be able to render and/or burn DVD's and eventually Bluetooh compatible DVD's for play back on commercial flat panel TV's, e.g., Samsung flat panel dvd's.
Are the DVD rendering and burning capablity of Pemiere CS5 Pro and Premiere 9 Elements equivalent , i.e, are that both as likely to produce DVD's that render with natural color on commercial flat panel TV's?
My prior experience is that my Lightroom generated 1080, H264 quicktime movies  have perfectly natural color on Mac LCD and other computer monitors but see very over saturated color on commecial flat panel tv's.
Discussions with Adobe tech support folks are contradictory on this matter.

The main differences between the authoring capabilities (the assembly of DVD/BD, navigation and Menus, plus burning) of Encore (the authoring program, that ships and installs with PrPro) and PrE 9 are:
1.) Encore is a full-featured authoring program, offering a lot more power and flexibility, but at the expense of having to do it "by hand," where PrE 9 is very limited in the navigation that can be employed, and it uses Menu Sets for that automation. Though PSD's, like the Menus in Encore, they have many special aspects, that must be considered, when doing any customization.
A.) In Encore, one can create almost all sorts of navigation in the DVD/BD, limited almost exclusively to the limits imposed by the DVD, or BD specs.
B.) PrE 9 will allow Autoplay, with no Menu, or will automatically create Scene Menus, per the Chapter Markers that you add - and that is ALL. There will      be no Into AV material. No Subtiltes. No supplemental Audio streams. Only linear navigation, or no navigation.
C.) Menus for Encore are much more easily customized, where there are some major conventions in those from PrE, that MUST be addressed.
2.) Encore can Burn an Image (ISO) - no Image in PrE, and can Burn a BD to Folder, which cannot be done in PrE - only for DVD.
3.) Encore offers the capability to adjust Layer Breaks for DL discs.
4.) Encore allows one to adjust the Burn speed, and in PrE, one is stuck with the "fastest" based on the speed of the media + the burner
5.) Encore allows output to a Flash delivery with pretty much full navigation.
6.) Encore allows for changes in the Subpicture Highlight Color Sets, and PrE will only do that, with some Menu Set editing.
7.) Encore offers a SlideShow feature, but I feel that it is rudimentary and limited, and assemble mine in PrPro, then go to Encore for authoring.
8.) Encore is a separate program, though interfaces with PrPro with ADL (Adobe Dynamic Link), and is NOT available as a stand-alone any more - only with      PrPro.
There are probably more differences, and some of the above might not make any difference to you. Things can probably be summed up as: Encore = great power and flexibility, but with things being done manually, and PrE lacks the power and flexibility, but is semi-automatic, so probably easier to use on simple Projects.
Good luck, and hope this helps you make the decision,
    Hunt
[Edit] Sorry that some of the formatting for the Outline did not translate well. Gotta' explore the Outline formatting in the editing screen more, 'cause it would probably have fixed things. Sorry about that.

  • Difference between Elite Pro and Elite Pro L

Hi I will soon buy the Elite Pro but I have newly seen that there is two models of this card availble the "old" one and the new L6. The pricedifference is about euro less for the L6 (at my local netdealer) but no specifications availble yet for this card.
I have looked at soundblaster.com but only find the elite pro not L6.
    Anyone here who knows ?

How could anybody know? There is no available info about a?"L6" card, official or unofficial. Is it in stock where you saw it advertised? have you tried to contact the store to ask for the differences?

  • Question about Hz difference between MacBook Pro and iMac?

Some will think I'm crazy for saying this, but my new MacBook is driving me nuts.
In a nutshell, I have tinnitus as a result of an accident some years ago. I can hear an intermittent high pitch sound coming from the back left of the machine. I used to hear a similar sound from old TVs back when I first got tinnitus. After some deduction I realised that it was to do (I think) with the fequency. I sold my old TV and brought a new one that was a 100Hz. My theory was somewhat confirmed when they delivered it and it was the 50Hz version and yes, the high pitch sound was very evident! Upon receipt of the 100Hz model and I immediately noticed the difference.
I'm guessing then that the MacBook has something inside emitting 50-60Hz - someone on this forum mentioned that too.
Although I want the portability, I can't stand that sound all day long, so I'm thinking of taking it back and swapping it for an iMac.
The question is, will I find the same problem? I'm not sure of the technical specifications in terms of Hz's between the two machines.
It's too noisy in the shop to tell.
    Any advice appreciated.
PS - did not have this issue with my 2008 MacBook pro.
PPS - makes no difference if it's plugged in or not.

Isolating the source of the high frequency would take a technician with the instruments to deteermine what components emit sound...actually very easy to do with the proper test instruments, but essential to tell you what is causing the offending sound.  Unless you know that it will be very hard to determine if the iMac will not do the same thing.
Only qualitative way to find out is go to an Apple store or reseller with a good selection of hardware, work with the different hardware and see if it bothers you.  Preferably with few people around and low background noise level so the sound isn't masked.

  • Difference between Logic Pro and Logic Express?

A buddy wants me to show him how to use Logic Express. I'm fairly up on Logic Pro, have used it for years. I'm wondering if I can get a trial version of Express to try out for an hour before embarrassing myself in front of him?
Or if there is a huge amount of difference in the basic setup?

There is very little difference, mostly in content (Jampacks, Waveburner, Mainstage..and a few of the high end plugins). Other than that they're functionally identical. same audio engine, you wouldn't know the difference just by looking at them.

  • What's the biggest difference between Premiere Pro and other options?

    Thanks!

"Other options" ... as in NLE's? You're not very specific there ... so all I can do is note that all other video processing programs are designed to realistically do one part of the task, with the need to pass-off to different programs typically by different makers to do the Whole Job. Adobe's pro video programs are designed to work together, and do so pretty well in all. PrPro for editing your footage into a viewable form/timeline, AfterEffects for any specific needs for Fx work, SpeedGrade for colorist/grading work (making it pretty or day-to-night or whatnot) and Audition for cleaning up, augmenting, or building your audio, then to Adobe Media Encoder for outputting to all sorts of codecs/formats for final use.

  • Upgrades and difference between Premiere Pro and Elements

When upgrading software, can I switch from Premiere Pro to Elements? If so, is Elements set up using similar menus and tools? Can Elements create short videos for broadcasting on tv and the web?

Premiere pro is the product for professional video editing and Elements is designed for consumer video editing.
You can see what Premiere Elements has to offer here:

I understand that it is difficult to determine which forum to post in since there are so many. This particular forum (sharing and storage) was created to help those transitioning from Photoshop.com to Adobe Revel. I am moving your post to the correct forum so that it can get proper attention.
I'll put this posting in the premiere elements community so it is in the right place.
