Difference between running FCP on PB or macbook?

I am in between buying refurb PB 12 for 1,200 or a 1.83 macbook for 2,500, will the macbook be substantially superior to the 12 PB in running FCP or FCP HD?
This will be my first mac as well as my first expereince with editing but I am really into it and I don't think this will be a phase, In fact I am taking two video making classes and a photoshop class.
I am also concerned about buying technology that seems to be on its way out, but the price differeance is to big to disregard, i could always buy a 12 Pb and then sell it later and then buy a macbook. Please help me decide my macbook ships in two days and I would have to cancel it by then.

First of all, I will say that the idea of editing on a 12" screen sounds like torture to me. Screen real estate is crucial - you can NEVER have enough. So for that reason alone, I'd (personally) never even consider a 12".
Secondly, no one is going to be able to speak much about the performance of FCP on a MacBook Pro because FCP will not run on it at all right now. We'll know more in March: "...The current version of Final Cut Studio is not supported on Intel-based Mac computers with Rosetta. A Universal version of Final Cut Studio will be available before the end of March 2006..."
Finally, you're sort of in a rock & a hard place I think. The 12" is virtually dead technology. But the MacBook Pro, being so brand new, could have it's own set of issues, like many "Revision 'A" computers do.
Sorry that I may not have helped out much here. I will say though, if it were me, I'd probably go MacBook Pro. (If I were choosing between these items you've stated....)

Does anyone know the difference between the Applecare Warranty for the Macbook Pro and the Applecare Protection Plan Auto Enroll 607-8192-B APP FOR MacBook

AFAIK, the difference is that the auto-enroll occurs automatically when you purchase the device and you will have to disburse the cost right there and then. Whereas the other comes in a box, can be purchased separately later and you must manually enroll your device into the system to activate the additional protection. This must occur before the base one year warranty is over.
So, if you don't want to pay up at the moment you buy the computer, you can wait up to say 11 months and buy the AppleCare warranty extension later. Just be sure to complete the enrollment BEFORE the base warranty is over, else Apple will not honor the extension (all in the fine print). This applies to all devices that offer an AppleCare option: notebooks, desktops, iStuff, etc.

  • Difference between upgraded Mac Book Air and Macbook Pro

    Hi All,
So I was recently gifted a MacBook Air with unexpected upgrades. Here are the specs:
1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
    8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
    512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
The MacBook Air ended up with a severe battery issue and The Mac Store okayed an exchange on it. Upon realizing I had such an upgraded Macbook Air I started looking at exchanging it for a Pro. The sales folks really didn't answer my questions thouroughly, though I did end up going for the pro, I just feel it's a more solid computer. I got the one with a solid state hard drive, a 2.6 GHZ i5 processer and 8 GB 1600MHz DDR3 of memory.
Today I came across the specs on that Air and realized how much the processor had been upgraded. I'm frustruated that none of the sales folks really went over that with me, they just told me the Pro was nicer.
But now looking at the differences, I'm wondering if that MacBook Air with all it's upgrades actually nicer?
I'm hoping folks on this forum can explain the differences between these specs, especially the processors and how I'd experience the difference.

You shouldn't do. I'm infamous at multitasking. I will have a video paused, watching a few different youtube videos, had a few projects in word open. The Macbook Air never missed a beat. THanks to the SSD. If you're looking for portability go with the Air.
When it comes to Photoshop, it woud really depend on what you're doing in it. The SSD and Processor in the Air would help you a lot. But if you're editing larger pictures you might notice a bit of slug.
    I have a 13 Macbook Air 2011 1.7ghz, 4gb, 128gb SSD for reference .

  • Difference between running pm-suspend and closing the lid.

    Hi!
Today i noticed this strange thing: i'm using xfce4.10 and pm-utils to suspend.
This morning i noticed that running a "pm-suspend" from my terminal, won't switch off my wireless card, while suspending with xfce buttons or closing the lid, would do it.
Why? What is the difference between these two actions (running pm-suspend and closing the lid)? As far as i know, the only difference is that there is no call to upower running pm-suspend from terminal.
ps: sorry for the subject, that is not describing the question the best!

Uhm yes, i know SUSPEND_MODULES array can do it.
What i was wondering is: xfce4-power-manager uses pm-suspend to suspend. So why does it something pm-suspend alone doesn't? As i said, the only difference for me, is that that button relies upon upower too. So i suspect it is upower that switch off my wireless card, isn't it?
My question is not how can i reach the same behaviour with pm-suspend alone, but what does that button in the xfce4-panel.
    I'm only curious!

  • Performance Difference Between 2gb and 4gb on a MacBook Pro

    Hi Guys,
About to make the big purchase. I am wondering what is the proformance difference between 2gb of ram and 4gb of ram on the new MacBook Pro?
    Thanks
    ll

I upgraded my new late 208 mbp and have been having ram problems ever since. My computer keeps locking up usually during video play and makes screeching noises and has weird 1 inch thick horizontal lines that go across my screen when it happens. I have to do a hard shutdown. I called macsales.com where i got the OWC memory and they said there is an issue with the video drivers and the third party memory. I have already had a replacement computer from Apple and it is still happening on a different computer. i did a fresh install of the OS but still having it. So be aware....it's already happened on two computers for me!

  • Difference between FCEHD & FCP

    Hi,
This topic might have been posted before and I'm quite new to these 2 pro apps.
My school currently has FCEHD and I'm more interested in FCP and may be attending courses for it.
What is the difference between these 2 apps and will I be able to incorperate skills from my FCP course into the FCEHD?
    Thanks

I believe the biggest difference between the two is the fact that FCP comes bundled w/ DVD Studio Pro, Compressor, and Motion.
Other than that as far as the Final Cut programs go there's really not much of a difference it seems execpt for Muti-cam, Setting default transitions, stuff like that. I dunno I might be missing something but I've owned FC express 2 and I just HAD to purchas Motion 2 because I didn't have it w/ FC Express then I took advantage of the Motion Crossgrade to Final Cut Studio and that's my story.
What I missed between FX Express 2 and Final Cut Pro is the Keyframing and 3-way Color Corrector but since this is now available in FC Express 3.5 I can't really see the difference between the two as far as editing goes unless it's a convience issue but if you want more than just editing video (ie. professional DVD authoring, encoding, Motion graphics) then Final Cut Studio is definitely worth the $$$!
If you ask me though; sooner or later you ARE going to feel the need for the programs bundled w/ FC Studio (Motion and DVD Studio Pro) and since you can not upgrade from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Studio it might be worth it to use the $300 USD that you would of spent on Final Cut Express and put that towards you investment in Final Cut Studio.
    Do it!
Oh and Welcome to the Discussions!!!!

  • Difference between running a java application as jar or via batch file?Hi,

    Hi,
I'm facing some strange differences in the behavior of my application , only caused by different methods to execute the application . So I have know the potential difference between these methods to locate the error.
    1) running my application it with java -jar (via batch-file or command-prompt) or in eclipse works fine
    2) executing the jar by double click causes problems.
The difference I know are that you can easily pass arguments to jvm, when using the jar.Maybe there is a differences in thread scheduling, but I'm not sure about that.
Can anyone tell me, the differences between these to methods of execution?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Greetings Michael

    Hi,
to get a clue I have redirected the System.err and System.out to a TextArea
(see code below) and suddenly the error was gone. So according to the behavior that it had worked before in the ide and via batch file where the System stream can do unlimited writing. I think it is obvious, that something goes wrong with streams of System.
Does anyone knows what happens to messages which are send to the default streams, when running the app as jar? I normally would assume that they would point to /dev/null or something else, but as I have experienced it seems that they are blocking after a certain amount, which prevented my app from working. (By the way invoking it with javaw has the same effect.)
This goes a little bit off topic, perhaps I should post a new thread.
But this is a huge difference between java and and javaw (jar), I wasn't aware of i t until now.
Hope someone can explain me how javaw handles System.err and System.out.
    Thanks for your participation.

  • Format and Partitoin Disk - Difference Between Running TS/LiteTouch.vbs from Desktop Vs. Bootable Flash Drive.

    Hello,
I have a question about disk formatting. If run our TS from the Run box, the HD is not cleaned. The image will be applied successfully but if there were any extra partitions, HP Recovery partitions for example, they will still be present.
If run the same TS form a bootable USB drive, the HD is completely erased.
Can anyone explain the difference in running the TS from the Desktop/Run box vs. running it from a bootable drive?
    Thanks.

From LiteTouch.log, the DeploymentType is NEWCOMPUTER when run off the flash drive but REFRESH when run from the desktop. LT must detect that its running in an OS and decides not to clean the drive. We do not have DeploymentType set in our
    rules.
Ah, glad you found it. That's what I was going to suggest, based on what environment the TS runs from.

  • Difference between running Disk Utility and "Archive and Install"

    Hi all,
I'm one of the poor souls who is having trouble with the software update 10.4.6. My iMac stopped halfway while doing the update, and when it attempted to do a restart, the iMac froze. I did the mistake of forcing it to shutdown, instead of just letting it take its time.
Last night, I attempted the Safe Boot but it did not work. The progress indicator kept on spinning for hours! SHOULD I TRY IT AGAIN?
Also, can someone tell me the difference between unning Disk Utility and "Archive and Install"? I figure I might have to do one of them to repair my iMac. I just want to do something that will reduce the chances of me wiping out my files. I also have the TechTool Deluxe CD with me. Should I be using that instead?
    Please help.

i just had a simialr issue with my powerbook. I stress similar, but in the end i had the same issue with the start up screen (light blue, apple icon and the spinning indicator below it. I could not get past it.
I ran disk utility from the boot disk, and got a kernel panic on verifying and and repairing permissions.
So (and this is what Im suggesting you try) in disk utility I made a disk image of my internal hard drive and saved it to an external hard drive. Takes a while but a worthy precaustion.
Second I went ahead and installed the OS on the external drive. Once that was done I boted from the external to oprn the disk image back up of my powerbooks internal drive. After that checked out i wnet back to the boot disk and did a clean install of the OS (wiping the internal) and things were fine after that.
maybe wait and see how other people respond to this before jumping into it, but its smart to back everything up on an external any day.
    much luck to you

    Official answer
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303572#faq1
Why is the time different between Mac OS X and Windows XP on my computer?
The Windows XP and Mac OS X operating systems handle your computer's date and time information differently, so the date and time may be different when you switch operating systems. For best results, use a network time server and resync the date and time whenever you switch operating systems. In Mac OS X, use the “Set date & time automatically” option in the Date & Time preferences. In Windows XP, click the Update Now button in the “Date and Time Properties” control panel.
    Nice solution

"I found a better solution to this whole thing. The problem with the Windows clock being off is because the hardware clock (the one on your actual motherboard) is being set to "Universal" time, or GMT, when you shut down your MacOS bootup. When you boot Windows, Windows assumes your clock is set to your local timezone because that's what Windows does by default. This explains why the people who set their MacOS clock to GMT got the right time in Windows... If the hardware clock is being set to "GMT," when it's actually the local time, Windows will pick this setting up as local time as it did before.
To fix this, you need to add a key to your Windows system registry to tell Windows that your hardware clock will always be GMT.
    * WARNING: Editing your registry improperly can render your Windows installation inoperable. Proceed VERY carefully. I am not responsible if you mess something up. *
The short solution for people who know how to edit the registry:
A DWORD key called HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation\RealTimeIsUniversal needs to have the value of "1"
The step-by-step solution is as follows:
    1. Boot Windows
    2. Click Start --> Run and type regedit. Click OK
    3. The Windows Registry Editor should pop up. Navigate within the explorer to:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation
    4. Click on the TimeZoneInformation "folder" from the navigation pane if you haven't already done so.
    5. This assumes the correct key doesn't exist. If it does, you will just change the existing key's value: Right click on the white space within the folder (If you don't have a right mouse button, you may need to download a program called applemouse to emulate the "control-click" of the apple 1-button mouse). Select new --> DWORD Value. Title the key "RealTimeIsUniversal" (No quotes). Set the value to "1" (No quotes again). Hexidecimal should be fine.
    6. Either reboot and set the clock in MacOS or set the clock in Windows. You should now be able to reboot into either OS and have a correct clock."

  • Difference between Garage Band in MacPro and MacBook - Help

    Hi,
Recently I've bought two new macs (a macbook and a macpro). Both of them came with Garage Band '08 as known. I've updated both of them to the latest version (4.1.1. (248)) but I find a difference when I press the track options: (cmd + I) which is, there are more "synthesizer" effects in my macpro, including for instance, a "CHOIR", a couple of extra guitars and so forth. But on my macbook version (which is apparently fully updated) I don't know how to activate or add (if possible) said features. Any help? I hope Im making myself clear... Thanks

Make sure you have installed all instruments and loops from your DVD - the first installation doesn't do that.

  • What is the differences between running windows with parallels or boot camp?

I am a Drafting and Design student so I need Windows for AutoDesk programs Revit and Inventor. I have a Mid 2014 MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz 16GB.

    nkriss wrote:

A couple of differences which don't often get mentioned:
First, in Bootcamp, the size of the partition you create for Windows is fully taken over by Bootcamp. In a virtual machine, you can give Windows 100GB for the C: drive but if you're only using 20GB on it, that's about what gets taken up on your SSD - it expands and contracts based on actual use.
Second, a virtual machine is a file like most other files (actually, it's a collection of files in a folder) and that means you can duplicate it for backup purposes. You can also take snapshots to try things out and restore to the snapshot's state to eliminate everything done since the snapshot was taken. Try that with a real PC, or Bootcamp, which is pretty much the same thing.

  • What's the difference between running apps in 64bit vs 32bit?

Just curious...  I know there are numerous advantages to running in 64bit mode but I'm curious as to what they are...  Right now I run pretty much everything in 32bit mode...  And with the new OS coming out I was wondering what the advantages were?  Some of my Apps still aren't even ready to run in 64 bit mode w/ OS X Lion.
    Thanks!

You can take advantage oven more RAM if your MP model can boot the 64-bit kernel. Have you seen:
Mac OS X- 64-bit kernel frequently asked questions
OS X v10.6- Macs that use the 64-bit kernel

  • Difference between the 13" MacBook Pros.

    Hi!
Can anyone tell me if there is a big difference between the 13" 2,4 ghz MacBook Pro and the 13" 2,8 ghz?

Of course there are differences in processors. The i7 is a more powerful processor than the i5. Visit Intel to get information on them.
What you want to know is easily found at the online Apple Store and by doing some Google searching. It's difficult for us to give answers to such general questions.
