Difference betyween stock 6600 and 7800 Quad graphic cards

Ref: getting ready to buy a Quad PM.
I'm hearing that the 7800 vs. 6600 improves (reduces) rendering time. I'd like to get some kind of metric that I can use to justify or not to buy the 7800 card rather than stock. The +$350 for the 7800 isn't small change but would be a good investment if it save a bunch of render time over the weeks and months of being used. FCP is the main App in use.
Also, just how does the 7800 card help in reducing the rendering time. Is it that Apple's Core Image technology somehow offloads some of its CPU work to the card and some cards accept this while others don't ?
Thanks... Barry

Barry,
There are a lot of 6600 owners (some with quads) who post in the Aperture forum. A few managed to use a 3rd party video upgrade website - strangedogs. Bottom line is the 6600 is detested by Aperture users, those who upgraded have found a much improved experience. UI sliders are instant and adjustments are visible in real-time, unlike the multi SBBOD experience using the 6600.
Don't get locked-into the 6600 as its not upgradeable from Apple - a SHOCKING disgrace.
So from an Aperture users point of view, Aperture is a heavy user of coreimage, don't buy anything less than the 7800. Check out the Aperture forums for more info. Also check barefeats website where they did a comparison of various graphics cards in heavy coreimage tests. Needless to say the 6600 was lowest, even than some 3-4 year-old AGP cards. For what its worth...

    Hello,
Transfer posting may involve or not involve the physical goods transfer.  In the system you might do transfer posting from quality to unrestricted, or from one store location to another.
In transfer posting you remove and or replace materials from storage in one storage location and place them in another storage location.
That transction code you use for transfer posting MB1B with following movement types may be used
    301, 303,305,311,411,309.
301 is Stock Transfer Between Plants in One Step
303 & 305 : Stock Transfer Between Plants in Two Steps
In stock transfer, it always involves physical movement of goods, like transfer between plants under same company code or different company codes.
Following types are possible with STO's
    Stock Transport Order Without Delivery
Stock Transport Order with Delivery via Shipping
Stock Transport Order with Delivery and Billing Document/Invoice

  • Way to stop NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT graphics card from running?

I have 2 graphics cards in my Power Mac G5, one is a NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT graphics card which i believe came with it, the other is a NVIDIA GeForce 6600. The problem I have is that the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT card makes a horrible fan noise, and I am looking for a way to unplug it, or cut it off from the power supply safely. Any advise is welcome.

    Here is a sample video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkMGFyB8wig&feature=related
Keep in mind that video cards have an extra tab at the tail end so don't forget to gently push the tab to the side.
The video card fans typically plug into power pins on the video card so removal of the card will expose the connection.  Otherwise, just follow the fan power leads.

  • Looking for a Nvidea GeForce 6600 OR Similar Type Graphics Card for Quad G5

    Hi there!
Wishing a Happy New Year to yo'all!
Was wondering whether someone might help me out with a minor issue I'm having...
I have recently acquired a Quad 2.5GHz PPC G5. When I bought it, it came installed with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 graphics card, which works just fine. Heard these cards are very good for 3D rendering, etc...
However... As I am an audio engineer, I don't need a flashy graphics card... Instead I need "flashy" sound cards...
I have two PCIe UAD-2 Quad cards for all my UAD plugin needs within Logic Pro... And I have PCIe Symphony X card for my Apogee (AD16X & DA16X) front end sound conversion. All which sound and work very well... So far so good!
But here's the problem... My Quad PPC has 4 PCIe slots, which should be fine for my arrangement i.e. one slot for graphics card, one for PCIe Symphony card, two for UAD-2 Quad cards... BUT the damnable NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 takes up two PCIe slots!!!
I have looked on line to find out what the Quad 2.5GHz G5 PPC was originally supplied with: an Apple OEM Nvidea GeForce 6600. However these are rare and hard to come by now-a-days... And I can't wait forever till one pops up for sale.
So... Can anyone recommend to me a graphics card that will work in the Quad 2.5GHz G5 PPC... AND take up only one PCIe slot and be able to run a 30 inch DVI Apple display i.e. it needs two DVI ports???
    Cheers in advance!

Hi, Polynomial. Try posting the question in one of the G5 forums. Most MacBook Pro owners aren't likely to be of much help with it.

  • Updating G5 Quad Graphics Card woes

    Hey everyone,
I have a PowerMac G5 (Quad) and the Graphics card is woefully inadequate (GeForce 6600).
I checked the Current Mac Pro specs and thought I could use the same graphics cards with my Quad - bought a Geforce 8800 GT - got home and ... OOPS!!
After putting the old card back, I checked out this message board and read a post titled "Graphics Updates" (probably just a few posts down from this one) where I found out that the Nvidia 8800GT and ATI X1900XT are incompatible with the PowerMacs, but the Nvidia 7800GT and ATI X1900GT should work.
Since there is no official Apple store in China yet, and I'd rather not make the same stupid mistake twice, can anyone tell me if there is a special "Mac Version" of these cards that I need, or can I just go and pick up one of them (Nvidia 7800GT or ATI X1900GT) up from a store and have no problems?
Just in case: do I need any power cord / adapter / other part for either of those cards to work?
    Thank you,
    Tim

Yes, there is a special Mac version of these (and any) card. The ROM on the card is different for the PC, as it needs to work with the PC's BIOS. A Mac card needs a different ROM to work with either Open Firmware (G5s) or EFI (Mac Pros). As you discovered, the Mac Pro cards work only Mac Pros, and you'd find the same to be true of the G5 cards, also due to the ROM differences.
You'll find it much easier to find the ATI X1900GT (aka G5 Edition). The 7800GT is generally only available as a replacement part, and as such, is very expensive. OWC has/had some in stock for a very reasonable price, but I have no idea if they can or will ship to China.

  • G5 Quad graphics card upgrades available?

I haven't been able to determine what graphics cards are available as an upgrade to the 6600 that came in my G5 Quad PCI Express machine. I bought the machine refurbed from Apple, so I couldn't get the 7800 upgrade when I bought it.
Is anything available that would seriously improve Motion 2 speed?
    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   3 PCI-Express slots, 4.5 gigs of RAM

    My understanding, sadly, is no.
AFAIK, the 7800 or the Quadro is only available as a BTO...

  • Can I upgrade my HP ENVY dv7-7300 Quad graphic card?

I've heard that most laptops graphic cards now a days can't be upgraded, but I have an HP ENVY dv7-7300 Quad and I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade its graphic card to Nvidia GT 635m?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Basically you can, nothing can stop you, with a cost and I believe this cost may be more expensive than buying a new computer because you have to take into account:
New card price,  and WHERE you can buy it because laptop cards are not the same as desktop cards. You can't buy from any normal shop,
Need new system board (may be),
Need new cooling system because generally speaking more powerfull card pumps out more heat (you want more powerfull card don't you?).
May need new PSU because your current PSU may not suitbale to the card. (I ordered a machine with Nvidia card and I needed to order a 90W charger at the same time, not the normal 65W charger. They simply rejected my order).
    Labor cost.
    Many, many packets of Asprin.
    Hope this helps.

  • T61 with Advanced Dock and PCI-e graphics card?

Purchased T61 laptop with NVidia Quadro NVS 140M graphics (Type: 7662-CTO).
Purchased ThinkPad Advanced Dock for use with PCI-e graphics card for multi-monitors.  (Type: 2553)
    OS = Vista Ultimate
Purchased PCI-e graphics card:   NVidia Quadro NVS 440  1x
Purchased four Samsung SyncMaster 740bx monitors
Opened Advanced Dock.  Installed Quadro NVS 440 card in PCI-e slot.  Card fits perfectly.
Laptop using most recent BIOS v 1.26
Set BIOS config for PCI-e graphics and DVI default monitor.
Connected all four monitors via DVI.
Laptop in dock, turned on.  BIOS screen displays correctly on external monitors.  Microsoft Corp. screen displays with progress bar.  Screen then goes blank and next step should be the Windows login.  Login screen never displays, however.  Boot-up of laptop halts at this point and never proceeds.
Removed PCI-e card from dock, and placed laptop back in dock.  Laptop boots correctly to Windows.
Assumed faulty dock.  Called Lenovo for replacement dock.  Replacement dock also fails to boot with PCI-e graphics card.
Next assumed bad card.  Tried different card.  ATI FireMV 2400 1x.  Card fits in dock perfectly.  Laptop still fails to boot with card in dock.
Called Lenovo.  Asked for a list of cards that will work in the dock.  Tech support did not know.  I asked if anyone at Lenovo has ever seen a T61 laptop work with the Advanced Dock and a PCI-e graphics card.  Tech said no.  Issue has been escalated to engineering.  I still do not have an answer as to which PCI-e cards, if any, will work in the Advanced Dock.
    Help please.

I spent some time surfing through product release letters and data sheets for the grafic cards offered by Lenovo, no where, as far as I could see, does it say that they are compatible with the advanced dock. What is also interesting, they say for PCs they are only tested for 2 screens, but you found the document MIGR-67464 where they show how to configure 4. [confused smiley]
It looks as though you and RBS have found possible solutions for 4 screens, congrats to all
However, I don't want to be the "party pooper" here, but why doesn't your T61 boot in the dock with graphics card? This is still puzzling me, and to be honest I haven't as yet been able to come up with a reason or probable cause as to why

  • MacBook Pro and Adobe CS5 graphics card upgrade

I have a few questions that I can't seem to get answers to from Adobe. I have a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.8 with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR2 SDRam, and GeForce 8600M GT graphics card. I currently have Adobe CS3 on it, but would like to upgrade to CS5. I know that I'll need to upgrade to Snow Leopard, but I believe I'll need to upgrade my graphics card also. According to Adobe's site, the compatible cards listed are the Nvidia quadro fx ones. the one they suggest is for a macbook pro, however, and costs about $1500. I'm trying to find out if I can even upgrade the graphics card on my MacBook, and if so is there anything that costs about a tenth of that price. CS5 specs can be found here http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/mastercollection/systemreqs/
My MacBook also has the dual boot (windows and Mac). I have never booted in Windows and have a windows laptop, so I'm wondering if it would be better to get rid of that, so that CS5 would run better when installed. any ideas/suggestions?

"... I know that I'll need to upgrade to Snow Leopard, but I believe I'll need to upgrade my graphics card also."
Why do you have to upgrade to Snow Leopard?
The graphics card is not upgradeable.
I would query the forum for users of CS5 and Leopard with your hardware configuration and see if they have any problems.

  • Oracle support and compatibility with graphics cards

I have been going through 2 weeks of hell getting any kind of meaningful information on Oracle linux 6.2 support for various graphics cards. I started with an ATI FireGl card that would not work with OEL 6.2. I am swapping that out in the seemingly futile hope that I can get an Nvidia GEFORCE 8800 to work. Either I am conducting my search using the wrong verbage(hard to imagine, but possible) or totally incompetant! I am here in one last desperate gamble that SOMEONE has gone through this pain before me. Maybe I am asking too much to be able to install 11GR2 on my server and still be able to use a Gnome desktop. Linux Mint worked perfectly with the ATI card, but alas, I could not install Oracle.
    Thank you in advance
    Dean

From what I understand, the error means that the X Window server cannot find a display attached to your DVI output, which actually means it does not support the DVI port where your display has been attached to. This is a problem of the video driver that simply lacks support for your graphics adapter.
I suggest to start by connecting only one display and verify it is connected to the DVI-1 port of the adapter. Support for DVI-2 requires support by the video driver.
Enterprise Linux should work with graphics adapters that are standard with server hardware sold by HP and Dell. Graphics adapters you can buy over the desk from ATI and NVIDIA are usually designed for the end-user desktop/game market and are all difficult to get fully working under Enterprise Linux. You can check the vendor support page to see if they provide driver support for SUSE and RHEL, but I doubt that it will work with the Oracle Linux UEK kernel. Driver software from these vendors are not open source and require a specific Linux kernel. Alternative drivers exist for http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/ for NVIDIA, but your success will vary, in particular if you need to support 2 monitors, which is not a typical server system setup.
You might have more luck using a Linux distribution for desktop systems, such as Fedora or Ubuntu. What you are planning to install from Oracle? It is easier to get Oracle Database working on unsupported Linux than trying to hack a video driver to support advanced features on an unsupported operating system. Or try a complete different approach and install Windows and use virtualization, like Oracle VirtualBox to run Oracle Linux out of the box. I would prefer to use virtualization even if my desktop computer would run Linux. There are just too many advantages I would not want to miss anymore.

  • Leopard and 3rd party graphics cards

Has anyone else noticed the requirements for Leopard, especially the last one on this list (from Leopard FAQ on the Apple store)
What is the Leopard system requirement?
    * Intel, G5, G4 (867MHz min) Processor
    * 512MB RAM (additional recommended)
    * DVD drive
    * 9GB Hard Disk Space
    * Built-in Display or Display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by computer.
This seems to imply that some or all replacement/upgraded graphics cards may not run leopard. This could have serious implications for those of us with older PowerMacs who have replaced the graphics card specifically to run Aperture.
This is especially worrying as Aperture relies so much on core graphics, and may eventually need some feature only available in Leopard or later versions.

When new hardware and/or software come out, what works and what is listed as "supported" are usually two different things. Apple cannot fully vet every legacy app, driver and piece of third party hardware on the planet. Best is to simply wait for Leopard to be on the street before assuming something will or will not play well with OS 10.5.

  • Aperture and Nvidia GT120 Graphics Card

I'm ready to order the Mac Pro 8 Core with Aperture installed. I have two questions.
    1. when Aperture is preinstalled is a card copy of the manual shipped, and
    2. will the GT120 graphics card work well with Aperture?
I will converting Canon 5DMKII raw files to 16 bit tiff.
    Thanks in advance

Coming from a G5 and a MBP, I now have a 2.66 eight core with 12Gb of ram. I have the standard GT120 installed and am waiting for a GTX 285 which is on backorder with Apple.
FWIW the GT120 is fine with my Sony 24Mpx files. I presume you'll import the raws and export as 16bit Tiffs, not work with 16bit tiffs?.
Aperture relies on GPU and I stayed away from the ATI due to the 512Mb of on board ram rather than the 1Gb of the GTX 285. I won't know if my decision was justified until the 5th Jan 2010 when I should finally be able to drop the last piece of hardware into my system.
In the meantime, aperture is fully usable and very speedy compared to my G5 and even the MBP.

  • 10.5.2 and geforce 730 graphics card - graphical errors & freezes

    Hi there!
I am writing this on behalfof a good friend, who is experiencing computer troubles, since updating to 10.5.2, specifically the graphics update.
    +His machine specs: 24' iMac G5, purchased November 2006 - without apple care.+
He has noted system freezes, and strange graphical errors, such as black lines and squares, since updating his system several days ago.
No steps have been taken as of yet, apart from the norm of clearing caches, restarting, and repairing permissions etc, which have not helped unfortunately.
As the errors are being output graphically, he believes the problem to be the *geforce 730* graphics card, which allegedly has a reputation.
Could you possibly help me please; have you experienced similar, what are his options, is this unit replaceable and at what cost, etc?
Although he does not have apple care, do apple have a responsibility to him, as it's a hardware failure, on a machine not even a year and a half old!
Thanks so much in advance of your help, and I'll keep searching in the mean time

I have the same issue, although I am running 10.4.11, ATI Radeon X1600
    Welcome to Discussions, SGiambalvo!
With all due respect, you'd get more, and better, advice from starting your own thread or looking at Tiger related threads. Those with similar experience to yours may just skip reading this thread.
Seems to be a hardware issue.
First things everyone will want to know are:
    1. is the iMac's firmware up-to-date? There were two. Refer to this Apple Support article: Firmware updates for Intel-based Macs
    2. the result, or not, from running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test (located on your iMac's grey system Install Disc)?
    3. when did this start, has it gotten worse, if sudden was there an event that was a coincidence?
    4. if you have AppleCare, what did they say when you called?
got a 'grey screen of death'
If it was the message to restart your Mac, that's a kernel panic. Can be due to hardware or software problem.
the video card updates seem to only be for Aluminum iMacs...so I have not downloaded this pack
Don't bother with it, as it will not allow an install after you've downloaded it.
While your problem may very well be the video card or logic board, it could be the hard drive going out. Regardless which, you'll of course want to backup all important data immediately.
