Difference Btwn Trash Can and Red Minus Sign when Deleting Documents
Hello, can someone please confirm for me the technical difference between the Trash Can button and the Red Minus sign button in the Documentation tabs? For instance, does the red minus sign delete the document from the project whereas the trash can also removes the document from the Knowledge Warehouse database? Also, how does this translate to deleting links to documents from the documentation tabs?
Thank you,
M. Neal
Hello Megan,
1. Trash can icon indicates basically as you stated it: With this button you can physically delete documents from the Knowledge Warehouse. Before doing so, however, the system automatically checks if the document to be deleted is still used by any other element in a structure, let's say another process (where-used). If so, you first have to detach this document from the affected processes - which takes us to the red minus icon.
2. Red minus icon: This translates to removing your document assignment from the documentation tabs (so basically to deleting document links). The document is not physically deleted - it stays in the Knowledge Warehouse database and can be re-assigned - if needed.
I hope this answers your questions.

Long story short, I downloaded garageband and deleted it in the trash can and emptied it. When i o to the apple store it says that its installed but i cant find it nowhere in the iMac. Please help
Yet another example of why it's a VERY BAD IDEA to do a clean install of Lion unless you are already VERY familiar with how to tweak the Mac OS. There's a reason Apple engineers removed it as an option. To accomplish it you have to erase your disk; not for the faint hearted.
Do you have a backup? PLEASE don't tell us you did this without a robust backup.
You erased the operating machine, so your computer went to the only place it could find one, the Recovery partition. And it's minimal, so it has to download everything in small chunks to reinstall itself. So yeah, it could take 10 hours.
Here's another option. Do you still have the original disks that came with your machine? Put one in and restart from it. You can reinstall your old system much faster. Then go to the Mac App Store and your purchase history and see if you can redownload Lion (I think that still works).
And this time just do yourself a favor and install per Apple's instructions. When the machine starts into Lion, use Setup ***'t (the first thing that fires up) to migrate from your backup.

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?
Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions. -
In mail the messages come up, but do not open. Striking the home button twice produces red minus signs above the mail, safari
apps. etc and they start shaking. Clicking he "settings" app twice produces the settings page briefly before returning to the home page.
Pressing the settings app once does nothing. Prior to opening up the I Pad with these conditions everything worked okay. Turned it
off overnight and upon opening the above conditions are there. Any thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated.Tapping the minus sign will close the app and free up some working memory.

Having trouble with Red minus signs on folders shared to my computer
Here's the situation as best as I can describe it.
We are working on 2 imacs. iMac A as a 1TB harddrive attached to it via USB that has all the folders on it that we use to work. iMac B is connected to A wirelessly and can "usually" access the contents of the harddrive through A with no problems. However, every once in a while I click a folder on the harddrive and I get access (I'm on iMac B) to that folder but the subfolder inside that I need to access (the others are fine) has a red minus sign on it which is infuriating. So far the only way we've been able to re-grant access to the folder for me is to either restart my computer or unplug and replug the harddrive into iMac A.
Steps we have taken:
Added full "read & write" permissions to both computers and users on both the folder, the sub folder, and the harddrive itself
Attempted to set up additional users to access the folder differently
Checked and unchecked "ignore ownership" on all of the above access points
We find it strange that it's only sometimes I get locked out of the folder and other times I'm not. It has to be some sort of glitch unless there's some sort of setting that locks me out if I make too many changes to the contents in that specific folder. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. The procedure below will reset the permissions of a home folder in OS X 10.7.4 or later. If you're running an earlier version of 10.7, update to the latest version first. This procedure should not be used in OS X versions older than 10.7.4.
Back up all data before you begin.
Step 1
Click the Finder icon in the Dock. A Finder window will open.
Step 2
Press the following key combinations, in the order given:
Command-3
Shift-command-H
Command-I
The Info window of your home folder will open.
Step 3
Click the lock icon in the lower right corner and authenticate with the name and login password of an administrator on the system. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Step 4
In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, verify that you have "Read & Write" privileges. If not, use the "+" and "-" buttons in the lower left corner to make the necessary changes.
Step 5
By default, the groups "staff" and "everyone" have "Read Only" privileges. With those settings, the files at the top level of your home folder will be readable by other local users. You can change the privileges to "No Access" if you wish, but then your Public and Drop Box folders will be inaccessible to others, and Personal Web Sharing won't work. Most likely, you don't need to change these settings.
Step 6
If there are entries in the Sharing & Permissions list for users or groups besides "me," "staff," and "everyone," delete them.
Step 7
Click the gear icon at the bottom of the Info window and select Apply to enclosed items... from the drop-down menu. Confirm. The operation may take several minutes to complete. When it does, close the Info window. -
Iphone 5 - can't delete albums in the albums no minus sign when in edit
I need to free up storage on my Iphone 5...when I am in ALBUMS ...I chose EDIT and NO MINUS sign appears to the left. I have old photo albums from a blackberry torch and photos from various camers got loaded up I am guessing through Itunes on a PC that no longer works. I do not want these photos on my phone I have them stored on a external drive. I love my phone I just don't want all these darn photos taking up so much room. What the heck can I do??? ahhh! HELP
You need a 3rd party iPhone file browser such as TouchCopy. See: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141. This covers more than photos, but it should still be useful.
Note, however, that if the photos were taken with a higher resolution camera than the iPhones the images that you copy back to your computer will be lower quality than the originals, as images in the Photo app are optimized for the iPhone's screen. -
I was trying to update my Garmin and Firefox is now locked down on the righthand page next to my trash can and will not open---I have an Imac desktop.
We need a lot more information - like exactly waht you are doing, what version of iPhoto you have and what happens

Is there any way to retrieve photos that were put in the trash can and then it was emptied? Or is there a way to move photos from an imovie to iphoto?
If you've emptied the trash, ehtn no. However if you have a backup, like Time Machine, or a recent backup copy of your photo library you could recover the photos from the trash.
The answer to getting a snapshot form iMovie depends on what version you have.
I should add it technically may be possible to recover the emptied trash, but if you really want to do that you would need to download a utility software that can attempt to recover deleted files. Do it soon before you start writing more data to that disk. At the moment I don't have a recommendation for such a program. Maybe someone else out there will offer suggestion. -
I mistakenly moved my apple keyboard layout bundle to the trash can and now I am unable to log onto my computer. I can't type anything so I can't access my account to get back onto my computer.
restart and hold Command+r to enter in recovery mode and ill allow you to repair your OS X installation. If you cannot repair it, then just create a new user, as usually issues with keyboards are rooted in the user's account.
Good luck -
My mail 3.6 (Mac OSX 10.5.8) lost its 'trash' folder and won't let me delete msgs.
Good news, thanks!

Can't enter minus sign in Google Docs spreadsheet
In a Google Docs spreadsheet, I can't enter a minus sign (hyphen) in a cell until I've typed in a number, then I can go back and enter the minus sign. I think this started with Firefox 15.0, and I have replicated it on another Mac, both running OS 10.7.4.
This is not just Mozilla problem, but same for all browsers. You can use the minus key on the numpad of your keyboard, but not the dash key. Unfortunately, if you are not using full-size keyboard, you can't easily access the numpad minus.
I have been using this method myself on my laptop: hit any number/letter, then quickly hit backspace and then dash. This for some reason lets the dash key to enter as a minus sign.
Graendal's way is much better, but still, I don't understand why Google decided not to allow the dash sign to be used as a minus sign. -
URL Boundary Rules and the minus sign "-"
Hi!
I need to set a Boundary Rule which contains one or more minus signs "-" in the hostname/domain, but Ultra Search doesn't accept such a rule and displays "Hostname can not contain multibyte characters.
I've searched the net for hours now, but haven't found a single explanation, hint or fix for this problem.
All help is welcome,
KarstenHi Dominique & Chris,
I'm having the similar problem - trying to limit the crawler to a specific website. I did set the crawler's source to www.x.com and set the URL Boundary Rule to Include host x.com. The crawler is only caching the first page and nothing else. If I dont include any rule it goes out the x.com website. I cant use depth cos' the leaf pages are at variable depth. Any suggestions??
thx!

Difference btwn at new and on change of
Hi all,
can i know the difference between 'at new' and 'on change of'.Hi,
at new - > means inside the loop, the new value.
eg :
1
1
2
3
4
5
5
loop at itab
at new matnr
write matnr.
end at.
end loop.
1
2
3
4
5
On change of -> chnage of particular value inside the loop.
The Major Difference is :
a) When AT NEW occurs,
the alpha-numeric fields have ******* in their value,
b) where as in case of ON CHANGE,
the alpha-numeric fields have their corresponding value,
of that particular record,
where the Event gets fired.
Other differences are :
ON CHANGE OF can be used any where in the program..
on change of differs from at new in the following respects:
1.It can be used in any loop construct, not just loop at. For example, it can be used within select and endselect, do and enddo, or while and endwhile, as well as inside get events.
2.A single on change of can be triggered by a change within one or more fields named after of and separated by or. These fields can be elementary fields or field strings. If you are within a loop, these fields do not have to belong to the loop.
3.When used within a loop, a change in a field to the left of the control level does not trigger a control break.
4.When used within a loop, fields to the right still contain their original values; they are not changed to contain zeros or asterisks.
5.You can use else between on change of and endon.
6.You can use it with loop at it where . . ..
7.You can use sum with on change of. It sums all numeric fields except the one(s) named after of.
8.Any values changed within on change of remain changed after endon. The contents of the header line are not restored as they are for at and endat.
while
AT NEW can be used only within a loop of an INTERNAL TABLE..
5. Sample program to get the taste of it
(just copy paste)
6.
REPORT ABC.
DATA : BEGIN OF ITAB OCCURS 0,
bukrs like t001-bukrs,
f1(10) type c,
end of itab.
itab-bukrs = '1000'.
itab-f1 = '1111111'.
append itab.
itab-bukrs = '1100'.
itab-f1 = '3333333'.
append itab.
itab-bukrs = '1200'.
itab-f1 = '555555'.
append itab.
AT NEW
loop at itab.
at new bukrs.
write :/ itab-bukrs , itab-f1.
endat.
endloop.
AT ONCHANGE
loop at itab.
ON CHANGE OF ITAB-BUKRS.
write :/ itab-bukrs , itab-f1.
ENDON.

I have a test system which uses a PXI-7352 motion controller with a MID-7602 stepper motor drive to position a 200 step/revolution stepper motor with an attached 1000 line encoder. The MID-7602 is configured for 64 microsteps per step, giving 12,800 microsteps and 4000 encoder counts per revolution. The system is controlled using LabView 7.1 and NI-Motion 6.13. To home the motor, I've defined a sequence in MAX which first finds the reverse limit switch and then moves forward to the encoder index pulse.
When finding its reference in open loop mode, the system its reference at the same microstep each time. When findings its reference in closed loop mode, the system finds its reference somewhere within about a 20 microstep wide range.
I hope somebody out there with more experience with this controller can describe the difference between finding the encoder index in open loop mode and finding the encoder index in closed loop mode.
Thanks,
Mark MossHello Mark,
I suspect that the behavior you are experiencing has today
with the resolution difference between your encoder and your
microstepping. Let me illustrate with an
example:
Example Setup
Stepper
Motor
NI
Motion Controller
10
steps per encoder pulse (Every 10 steps the controller gets an encoder
pulse, therefore positions 0-9 all appear to be 0 to the controller)
The
system has a maximum of 3 pull in moves set
Open Loop Scenario
The
system is commanded to go to position 9.
The
controller sends out 9 pulses.
The
motor moves to position 9.
Closed Loop Scenario
The
system is commanded to go to position 9.
The
controller sends out 9 pulses.
The
motor moves to position 9.
The
controller checks its position and sees that it is still at position 0
because it has not received an encoder pulse.
Because
the controller thinks it is still at position 0, it sends another 9 pulses
as its first pull in move.
The
motor moves to position 18.
The
controller checks its position and sees that it is at position 10 because
it has only received one encoder pulse.
Because
the controller thinks it is still at position 10, it sends1 reverse pulse
as its second pull in move.
The
motor moves to position 17.
The
controller checks its position and sees that it is at position 10 because
it has only received one encoder pulse.
Because
the controller thinks it is still at position 10, it sends and additional
single reverse pulse as its third pull in move.
The
motor moves to its final position of 16.
I believe something similar is happening with your
application as it looks for the index pulse.
Because the controller does not compensate for what it perceives as
position error in open loop mode, the motor always goes to the same commanded
position. In closed loop mode, the motor
is bouncing around inside the single index encoder pulse trying to find a
certain position.
There are several recommendations I can make towards
correcting this behavior. These
recommendations are in order of effectiveness:
Setup
your system so that there are more encoder counts per revolution than
steps per revolution.
Turn
off pull-in moves by setting them to 0 in MAX.
Use an
open loop configuration.
Play
around with the pull in window in MAX.

Why can't I cut and paste email addresses when sending documents?
Why can't I cut and paste email addresses when sending files? I have to type them in each time...And it doesn't remember them for the future, as SendNow did.
Also, it seems that the message I type in is not kept, as it was with SendNow?
Thanks!Hi drlaura,
You're correct on both counts--these features work differently Adobe Send than they do in Adobe SendNow.
If you're sending files from Adobe Reader, you can access your local Address Book, which should make entering email addresses easier. Please see: I’m trying to send a file from Adobe Reader, but I can’t access my computer’s address book to find my contacts. Why not?
Please let us know how it goes.
