Difference in ASA module, ASA 5510

Folks,
I am trying to get some comparison good data on the Cisco ASA(5585 probably) module and the Cisco 5510 physical device.
We are looking to create contexts and most of these contexts are dynamic in nature.
What could be the advantages and disadvantages of using one and the other.
I know the ASA 5510 supports virtual contexts but not sure how much are supported by the base license and how much could be added.
Futher the communication between the Switch and the ASA module goes via the backplane and in case of physical device will go over the LAN cable(mostly a 1Gig). Will this be slower?

    All, I am looking to add the IPS module to my ASA 5510's. I am contemplating only purchasing one module and placing it in the active ASA. I am willing to accept that in a failure scenario I will loose the IPS functionality until the primary ASA is recovered. I have not had a chance to talk to my SE to see if this is even possible. Has anyone attempted a deployment such as this? Will it work and is it supported?

    Ok, that is what I needed to know.  The purpose of us having an active/standby ASA is to keep the business up and going for the very rare times there could be an active ASA failure.  The purpose for the IPS would be to help protect and inspect traffic and is not necessary to keep the business running.  If we implement IPS I am not worried at all if during the times when the primary ASA is down (hasn't been down for over three years now) we lose the IPS funcationality.  This is not worth the $1000 extra per year to us.

  • ASA 5510 anti spam module issue need help

    hi all,
    i have ASA5510 my E0 interface is having public ip and E1 is having 192.168.1.0/24 network and my DMZ E2 is 172.16.2.0/24 network.
    my management interface ip address is 10.10.10.1 and ive put 10.10.10.5 for SSM module. but im not receiving the updates from net bcoz there is no connection to the internet from 10.10.10.0/24 network.
    how can i do that, and ASA 5510 has got 4 ports E0,E1,E2,E3 but i can see that port E3 is activated if i chk the sh run there is no port E3.
    now my issue is i would like to allow 10.10.10.0/24 to access internet to update the module.
    pls help, i will rate all the posts.

  • ASA 5510 with Cisco 2811 Router Behind it - Not forwarding traffic

    Hi all,
    Some might know that I have been dealing with an issue where I cannot seem to get forwarded packets to reach their destinations behind an ASA 5510 that has a Cisco 2811 connected directly behind it.
    Some examples that work.
    I can SSH into the ASA.
    I can SSH to the Cisco Routers behind the ASA.
    I cannot reach items beind the Cisco Routers.
    My Configuration is this (I am sure I included a bunch of info I didn't need to, but I am hoping it'll help!):
    I have a static Ip assigned to my Ouside Interface Ethernet 0/1
    It has an IP address of 199.195.xxx.xxx
    I am trying to learn how to shape network traffic (this is all new to me) via the ASA and the Routers to specific devices.
    The Inside Interface on the ASA is 10.10.1.1 255.255.255.252
    The Outside Interface on the 2811 is 10.10.1.2 255.255.255.252
    I can ping the router from the ASA. I can SSH through the ASA to the router.
    BUT I CANNOT ACCESS DEVICES BEHIND THE ROUTER.
    So, I wanted to BAM that statement above because I just don't kjnow where the issue is. Is the issue on the router or the ASA, my guess is, the router, but I just don't know.
    Here are my configs, helpfully someone can help.
    ASA errors on the ASDM when I try and hit resources; specifically a web device behind the ASA and the 2811. It's Ip address 192.168.1.5 it's listening on port 80.Static IP, not assigned via DHCP.

    I ran those commands while I had the nat off on the router and here are the results. note, i didn't make any changes to the ASA as you only said to remove the router RIP which I did and reloaded and no change.
    As long as the statements ip nat outside on the Fastethernet 0/0 is off and the ip nat inside is off on the vlan and the overload statement is taken out, I cannot hit the internet.

  • ASA 5510 'bounces' UDP packets. Why?

    Hi. I hope to find someone who can shed a light on something that is bugging me for days now. We have an ASA (5510, running 7.2(2)) to connect our subnets to the backbone of the ISP. I received complaints about one specific connection, which I'll "draw" here:
    [ remote host 192.87.x.y (A) ] -- {"Internet"} -- [ Telecity Router ] -- [ Our ASA ] -- [ switch ] -- [ fibre ] -- [ switch ] -- [ our host 82.199.c.d (B) ]
    What happens is the following: I can successfully ping from A to B and back. I can also traceroute (UDP) from A to B and back. But a specific UDP packet sent by A (port 9001) to B (port 5432) is causing a problem. "Our ASA" does not route the packet to the correct interface, but sends it back to the Telecity router instead. Which in turn sends it back to "Our ASA" (since it is destined for our subnet). This goes back and forth for 60 times and then the TTL is expired.
    I have no idear what is happening here. The access-lists are correctly configured (as far as I know), but even if they weren't I would expect the packets to get dropped rather than put back on the sending interface. This packet is bounced (on ethernetlevel, the IP part remains the same apart from the TTL) to the sending router.
    Any pointers as to where to look for what is causing this and how to investigate this further are highly appreciated.

    You will need to purchase an SSM/IPS card for your ASA box. I'm not sure of the licensing although I donlt believe it is per-user. You should contact Customer service for that information.

  • ASA 5510 - Memory : 1 Slot or 4 Slots?

    Is there a way of ascertaining whether my 5510's have 1 memory slot or 4 memory slots without having to open the chassis?
    I need to order the appropriate memory  upgradfe kits.

    The original ASA-5510s shipped with 4 DIMM sockets.  Only after production for
    about a year was the 5510 re-worked and we came out with a cost reduced model
    which reduced the DIMM sockets from 4 to 1.  This was verified by MFG.

    Prerequisites for Active/Standby Failover
    Active/Standby failover has the following prerequisites:
    •Both units must be identical security appliances that are connected to each other through a dedicated failover link and, optionally, a Stateful Failover link.
    •Both units must have the same software configuration and the proper license.
    •Both units must be in the same mode (single or multiple, transparent or routed).

  • Cisco IPS SSM 10 Sensor can't update signature file from ASA 5510

    Cisco ASA 5510 IPS Firewall with ASA-SSM-10 Module.  I am trying to do a manual update of the signature file and get the following error:
    Error: execUpgradeSoftware : couldn't connect to host
    I have confirmed that I can ping the ftp server successfully from the ASA and the command I am trying to use from the configure terminal of the module is:
    upgrade ftp://[email protected]//IPS-sig-S813-req-E4.pkg
    I have also tried via http and it does not work as well.  Any thoughts?

    to connect to ftp there should be username usually anonymous and password whitch can be any. check in ftp server

  • ASA 5510 in Transparent Mode-Guidelines.

    Dear all,
    I need to convert routed mode to transparent mode on my ASA-5510 with inbuilt IPS.
    let me know which of the following features configured on my firewall will have issue if converted to transparent mode:
    1. static routes.
    2. object-groups.
    3. ACLS.
    4. URL-filter (Websense).
    5. IPS . ( i doubt this )
    6. have 3 data and 1 Mgmt interfaces.
    7. syslog.
    8. SNMP
    I'm sure point 5 and 6 will have issues, need to confirm.

    Does not participate in routing protocols but can still pass routing protocol traffic through it. You can define static routes for the traffic originated by the ASA.
    in transparante mode the devices dehind and infront of the firewall will be in the same ip subnet as the firewall will be a L2 device!!
    ACLs can be configured normally
    syslog as well
    obgect groups as well
    Address translation is inherent when a firewall is configured for routed mode. Beginning with
    ASA 8.0, address translation can be used in transparent mode as well
    Does not participate in multicast. However, it allows passing the multicast traffic through it using the ACLs.
    Does not support QoS.
    Inspects Layer 2 and higher packet headers
    as long as u can use
    policy-map global_policy
    then u can integrate with IPS if u mean AIP-ssm modul
    transparent also known as a Layer 2 firewall or a stealth firewall, because its
    interfaces have no IP addresses and cannot be detected or manipulated. Only a single
    management address can be configured on the firewall
    In transparent mode, a firewall can support only two interfaces-the inside and the outside. If
    your firewall supports more than two interfaces from a physical and licensing standpoint, you
    can assign the inside and outside to two interfaces arbitrarily. As soon as those interfaces are
    configured, the firewall does not permit a third interface to be configured.
    Some platforms also support a dedicated management interface, which can be used for all
    firewall management traffic. However, the management interface cannot be involved in
    accepting or inspecting user traffic
    Configure a management address:
    Firewall(config)# ip address ip_address subnet_mask
    The firewall can support only a single IP address for management purposes. The address is
    not bound to an interface, as in routed mode. Rather, it is assigned to the firewall itself,
    accessible from either of the bridged interfaces.
    The management address is used for all types of firewall management traffic, such as Telnet,
    SSH, HTTP, SNMP, Syslog, TFTP, FTP, and so on.
    A transparent firewall can also support multiple security contexts. In that case, interface IP
    addresses must be configured from the respective context. The system execution space uses
    the admin context interfaces and IP addresses for its management traffic
    You do not have to configure a static route for the subnet directly connected to the firewall
    interfaces. However, you should define one static route as a default route toward the outside
    public network

  • Configuring ASA 5510

    I have turned on the aaa command authorization without applying adequate privileges to the user. I can now login through that user but the ASA 5510 displays an error :ASA5510# show run
    ERROR: % Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
    ERROR: Command authorization failed .need your help to resolvr this issue

    Sorta, you can ssh to the ASA and from there establish a backplane connection to the module.
    Can I assign the management port an external IP address and to establish  a L2L VPN tunnel for remote management and tunnel syslog and IPS logs  through it?
    Would I be able to route Syslog and IPS event through the Management port to a remote event collector?
    Yes, but you can't do the IPS part though.
    The IPS is an independant unit and will use its own management interface to send logs, the only way you can do this is to log into the ASA, then into the IPS and get the logs you are looking for.

    Cabling clarification: internal switch connected to the ASA's management interface and to the IPS' management interface.
    This is ok, if you want the units to communicate make sure they are part of the same vlan.

  • Unable to see interface on ASA 5510 Firewall

    I am unable to see 4th interface on my firewall i.e fastether0/3 on my firewall ASA 5510.
    Below is the output.

    Hi Ramraj,
    Even i have the base license for my ASA 5510 which is showing all the 4 interfaces in sh ver. I don't think so license would be an issue. There should be some IOS code bug that needs to be upgraded. If this goes for an OS upgrade it should get resolved.
    Its not showing up in sh ver . As Karsten said he might be running on old IOS version.
