Difference in BDC & CATT

am working on IS-U/CCS.
pl tell me whats the difference between BDC and CATT ? +- points.
tia.

hi Sudeep,
BDC(Batch Data Communication) and ECATT(Computer Aided Testing tool), both serve the purpose of Data Migration, CATT is a tool to achieve the above and BDC is programming part to achieve the same, The advantage of BDC is we(ABAP programmers) can develop custom programs to upload the transaction data mainly(we can also upload master data). CATT is a preconfigured tool to achieve data migration, generally used by Functional conultants, u can make use of one more tool LSMW(Legacy System Migration Workbench) to achieve the same.

  • Differences between  BDC , LSMW, BAPI,CATT

    Hi ABAP Gurus,
Just I have completed my ABAP course. Could you please explain the differences between BDC(Session and Call Transaction),LSMW,CATT and BAPI. Their advantages & limitions.
    Thanks in advance.
    Chandra Mohan

    BDC techniques used in programs:
    1) Building a BDC table and calling a transaction,
    2) Building a session and a set of BDC scenarios and keeping the session available in SM35,
    3) Building a session and lauching the transaction right after closing the session.
    BDC using Call Transaction
    LSMW:
The Data Transfer Workbench (or DX Workbench, transaction SXDA) is an integrated SAP tool that supports data transfer and analysis. It does not have the built-in features for mapping for source structures to target structures, but it will allow you to integrate Legacy System Migration Workbench (LSMW) objects as processing tasks within a run definition. The DX workbench has many features for creating test data and performing data migrations - for example, logging of data migration runs. However, if you need to map or convert data, you should use the LSMW. Or, you can integrate your LSMW objects as task within a more user-friendly data migration run, in which the LSMW project steps "Read data", "Convert data," and "Start IDoc processing" are automated and use the features of both tools. If you donot need logging and automated data migration runs, you can perform your data migration without the DX Workbench.
    BDC:
Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the oldest batch interfacing technique that SAP provided since the early versions of R/3. BDC is not a typical integration tool, in the sense that, it can be only be used for uploading data into R/3 and so it is not bi-directional. BDC works on the principle of simulating user input for transactional screen, via an ABAP program. Typically the input comes in the form of a flat file. The ABAP program reads this file and formats the input data screen by screen into an internal table (BDCDATA). The transaction is then started using this internal table as the input and executed.
BDC using Call transaction involves calling an SAP transaction in back ground from within the ABAP
program. The process involves building an Internal BDC table containing the screen information needed to
execute the required transaction and then passing this to the Call transaction command (See code example).
The full procedure for creating a BDC program is as follows:
What is the difference between batch input and call transaction in BDC?
    Session method.
    1) synchronous processing.
    2) can tranfer large amount of data.
    3) processing is slower.
    4) error log is created
    5) data is not updated until session is processed.
    Call transaction.
    1) asynchronous processing
    2) can transfer small amount of data
    3) processing is faster.
    4) errors need to be handled explicitly
    5) data is updated automatically
    BATINPUT/DIRECT INPUT
A: Batch-inputs can not be used to fill the "delivery due list" screen because it is not a dynpro. This is a standard SAP report. A SAP report (check with "System -> Status") may be called using SUBMIT sentence with the appropriate options . It is preferred to call a report than create a Batch-input program.

  • Differences between BDC and LSMW

    Hello SAP Gurus,
Kindly let me know the various differences between BDC and LSMW.
Also, please tell me the STEPS of the CUT-OVER PLANNING (Shifting of Data from the Legacy System to the SAP System). Here, the "Data" means which data? Please explain in details.
    Looking for your early feedback.
    Regards,
    Kaushik.

    Hi,
BDC- It is Batch data communication. Its used for data conversion from legacy system to SAP system. Only technical people can do it. Tcode is SHDB.
LSMW- It is legacy system migration workbench. Its also used for data conversion from legacy system to SAP system. But it is role of functional consultant.
There are 14 steps in LSMW. As soon as you complete the one step, automatically it will go to next step.
In general you can use LSMW. But if you want to transfer more than 40,000 data, then it is not possible in LSMW. That time you can take help of BDC.
Cutover strategy depends upon how the organizations design their data load strategies. Normally, you decide the sequence of Data loads for Configuration  settings, Master data, Transaction data which follows whom and then you make a copy of the system as a  Production system a day before and after checking the successful data loads, you go-live 100% or partial again  depending upon organizational setup and policies.
Cutover planning is highly site specific. There's no thumb rule. The stock data as on the date of going live should be correctly entered. But stock being a highly dynamic quantity, the strategy for loading should be crystal clear. Then you have to load all the back dated transaction on the stock. Some stock comes into your plant/storage location as return and some stock is actually delivered to your customer through sales orders of various kinds.

  • Difference among bdc,rfc,bapi

    hi,
    differences among BDC,RFC,BAPI
When  do we go  for BDC?
when do we go for RFC?
when do we go for BAPI?
    devi.

    HI,
When do we go for BDC?
Batch Data Communication or BDC is a batch interfacing
technique that SAP developed.  It is mainly used for
uploading data into the SAP R/3 system.   BDC works by
simulating the user input from transactional screen via an
    ABAP program.
The data input data file will come in the form of a flat
file which the user save as file type txt file or prn file
from the Microsoft Excel program.  An Abaper will create a
program to read the text file and upload into the SAP system.
Normally, the tcode SHDB will be used to record the
transaction code the user used.  After, the simulation, the
Abaper can generate a sample program and modify from there.
It makes the programming easier and faster.
when do we go for RFC?
    Purpose
Communication between applications in different systems in the SAP environment includes connections between SAP systems as well as between SAP systems and non-SAP systems. Remote Function Call (RFC) is the standard SAP interface for communication between SAP systems. RFC calls a function to be executed in a remote system.

  • What is the Tcodes for Uploading of data using BDC & CATT

    PP members:
I was going through the <b>cutover activities</b> ,  and what I understood is  we transfer all the legacy system data into SAP before going live
The data upload follows certain steps (depends on the organizational design load strategies)
First we upload all the master data ( material master, BOM, W/C's & Routings)
Then the transaction data ( Ideally speaking, there should no open orders i.e. WIP as on the day of cutoff )
If the WIP (Work in Process) is unavoidable then the materials consumed shall be treated as <b>materials of the previous stage</b> and necessary adjustments shall be made after cutover day
At this point, I could not able to understand what does the author mean <b>materials of the previous stage</b>
Now comming to the uploading of data into SAP from legacy system, we use tools like LSMW, CATT & BDC
Is it a must to use <b>only LSMW tool</b> to upload master data or any other upload tools are fine
Lastly,. I am not sure about the Tcode of CATT & BDC
    Summary of the questions:
1.What does the author mean  <b>material of previous stage</b>, for WIP materials during cutover activities
    2. Is it mandatory to use only LSMW tool for uploading for master data
    3. What are the Tcodes for upload tools CATT & BDC ?
    Thanks for your time
    Suren R

    Dear,
1.What does the author mean material of previous stage, for WIP materials during cutover activities - as i understood, what is the stage of material..like it must have gone through 2 work centers and other 2 is left. i.e. you need to create Production order with only 2 operation as other 2 is already over. - usually it is done in such a way that we will create Production order and confirm till 2 operations and WIp is calculated so thatb FI will tally the books in SAP and lagacy.
    2. Is it mandatory to use only LSMW tool for uploading for master data - no you can use any tool as required and suits yr requirement
    3. What are the Tcodes for upload tools CATT & BDC- BDC through a prog in SE38. CATT through - SCEM.

  • Diff b/w BDC and LSMW

    hi
i want know what is the difference between BDC and LSMW and which is best also tell me BDC and LSMW using for which type data (like master or transactional data)
    thanka in advance
    deepak

    Hi deepak,
LSMW and BDC are vastly different.
BDC (Batch Data Communication) is a technology used for data transfer. it is meant for transferring data thru SAP transactions itself. when u use BDC for data transfer, the sequence of steps is the same as when u use standard sap transaction screens for data upload. the only difference is that u can use different options for foreground/background processing.
LSMW on the other hand is a tool that helps migrate data from a legacy system (non-sap system ) to SAP system. it offers u various options to use either batch input, direct input, BAPIs or idocs. it involves a series of some 17-18 steps to migrate data.
    BDC:
Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the process of transferring data from one SAP System to another SAP system or from a non-SAP system to SAP System.
    Features :
    BDC is an automatic procedure.
This method is used to transfer large amount of data that is available in electronic medium.
BDC can be used primarily when installing the SAP system and when transferring data from a legacy system (external system).
BDC uses normal transaction codes to transfer data.
    Types of BDC :
    CLASSICAL BATCH INPUT (Session Method)
    CALL TRANSACTION
    BATCH INPUT METHOD:
This method is also called as ‘CLASSICAL METHOD’.
    Features:
    Asynchronous processing.
    Synchronous Processing in database update.
Transfer data for more than one transaction.
Batch input processing log will be generated.
During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
    CALL TRANSACTION METHOD :
This is another method to transfer data from the legacy system.
    Features:
Synchronous processing. The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
Updating the database can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The program specifies the update type.
Transfer data for a single transaction.
Transfers data for a sequence of dialog screens.
No batch input processing log is generated.
    For BDC:

    http://www.sapbrain.com/TUTORIALS/TECHNICAL/BDC_tutorial.html
    LSMW:
The LSM Workbench is an R/3-based tool that supports You when transferring data from non-SAP systems ("Legacy Systems") to R/3 once or periodically.
The tool supports conversion of data of the legacy system in a convenient way. The data can then be imported into the R/3 system via batch input, direct input, BAPIs or IDocs.
Furthermore, the LSM Workbench provides a recording function that allows to generate a "data migration object" in an entry or change transaction.
The main advantages of the LSM Workbench:
    • Part of R/3 and thus independent of individual platforms
    • A variety of technical possibilities of data conversion:
    • Data consistency due to standard import techniques:
    Batch input
    Direct input
    BAPIs (Business Application Programming Interfaces)
    IDocs (Intermediate Documents)
The import technique to be used in an individual case depends on the business object.
    • Generation of the conversion program on the basis of defined rules
    • Clear interactive process guide
    • Interface for data in spreadsheet format
    • Creation of data migration objects on the basis of recorded transactions
    • Charge-free for SAP customers and SAP partners

    Hi,
LSMW IS JUST A TOOL TO GET THE DATA FROM A LEGACY SYSTEM.
IN BDC WE HAVE 2 WRITE THE CODE AND CALL THE REQUIRED METHOD
THATS IT. IN FUNCTIONALITY PERSPECTIVE THERE IS NO
    DIFFERENCE.
BDC is Batch Data Communication. It is basically a program
either generated by SAP after a recording or programmed by a
abaper. Its like running the transaction manually but all the
data is populated on the screens automatically. It is a
little complex when the screens contain table controls.
LSMW is legacy system migration workbench is a more user-
friendly tool thru which one can do the same as a BDC. One
just has to follow some 14 steps, click buttons and the data
is set to be uploaded &#8230;.LSMW offer you 4 ways to import data
into SAP, they are BDC, Direct Input, BAPI(BO), IDOC.

    hello all,
please tell me about difference between bdc , lsmw, bapi
Moderator Message: Search for available information before posting.
Edited by: kishan P on Dec 28, 2010 4:32 PM

    Hi Karthik,
All the 3 can be used for the same purpose.
BDC - was the first provided by SAP for mass data entry in to SAP Database with Screen checks
LSMW - Originated as a 3rd party tool with many more functionalities and ease of use
BAPI - Some times the transaction screens changes, in those cases the BDC's fail as they purely refer to the screen elements. BAPI's provide a more consistent way to make entries in SAP systems without referencing the screen elements but still adhering to the underlying business logic, so the data entry is syntactically and semantically correct.
    Hope this helps.

  • PA - OM Integration not happening via BDC

    Hi,
In the HR system PA and OM are linked. So any position filled via Hire / re-hire is reflected in the org structure.
In our system, when we do a manual quick hire via PA40 of a person then the Org assignment is also done.
However we have implemented a BDC program to perform quick hire.
When we are using BDC the record is created in PA infotypes correctly (in 0000 and 0001 the position is occupied by the person ), however in Org structure the position still appears to be Empty and not occupied by this personnel.
Any reasons or solution ?  Why is there a difference between BDC and a manual hire?
If we run RHINTE00 after running the BDC rogram the PA-OM integration is happening fine.
But RHINTE00 is supposed to be run initially and not everytime we hire an employee right?
Also the integrations flags are: PLOGI PLOGI = 01
                           PLOGI ORGA  = X
                             PLOGI PRELU = 0
    Regards,

    Dear Sai
I hope there is a problem in BDC, take the help of ABAB and check the recording once again.  This is will solve your problem.

  • Dif betwen BDC call transaction and session method

    Hi to all,
This is my problem. I want to know, what is the difference between BDC call Transaction method and Session method. where the situation we can use these methods.
I will be thankfull to all.

    Session Method :
       Asynchronous Processing.
       Transfers Data for Multiple Transactions
      Synchronous Database Update
During Processing, No Transaction is started until the previous transction has been written to the database.
A Batch Input Processing log is generated for each session
Sessions can not be generated in Parallel.
The Batch Input Porgram must not open a Session until it has closed the preceding Session.
    Call Transaction :
       Synchronous Processing.
Transfers Data for a single transaction.
Synchronous and Asynchronous Database updating both Possible.
The Program Specifies which kind of updating is desired.
      Seperate LUW for the transaction.
The System Performs a database commit immediately before and after the  CALL TRANSACTION Using Statement.
No Batch Input Processing Log is generated.
These are the differences between session and call transaction method.
Call transaction is faster then session method. But usually we use session method in real time...because we can transfer large amount of data from internal table to database and if any errors in a session. Process will not complete until session get correct.
