Difference in data transfer rates between winXP and Linux server?
Hello all,
I am using a winXP laptop to act as my server (all usb external hard drives are connected to it) but the data transfer rates can be really slow. Is Linux faster in that regard? Can a Linux based server provide faster data transfer rates?
Thanks for any help.
Bmora96
Linux cannot make hardware go any faster - so if WinXP and its drivers are making optimal use of those USB drives and the USB data transfer pipe, Linux will not make it faster. (but installing Linux and going Tux are always excellent ideas that need no real reason either ;-) )
Real question you should be asking is if using a notebook in a server role is wise thing to do?

Slow Transfer Rate Between iTunes and iPhone 3GS
Hi,
My iTunes recently failed to recognise my iPhone 3GS and suggested a restore followed by a back up.
I followed the steps and after a short while it started to transfer from iTunes library back onto my iPhone. However, the rate of song transfer appears to be very slow. 3,000 songs in 10 hours, there is still 1,800 to go.
Is there anything I can check to speed to process up, I don't remember it being this slow when I first got the iPhone?
ThanksI'm having the same problem with very slow transfer and it's even more mystifying.
I got a 3GS a while ago and always very impressed by its transfer rates (300mb video file syncs in about 30 seconds). My partner also got a 3GS last week, but I noticed when setting it up that it was very slow (did some tests - the same 300mb file takes about 6 minutes to transfer). Since I was syncing to the same itunes library, on the same computer, using the same cables, I assumed it was something wrong with the new phone. Tried restore couple of times but no change, so I took it to the local genius bar who checked it, couldn't find anything wrong with it and swapped it out.
The only thing they suggested that I hadn't tried was reinstall iTunes - never occurred to me as my original phone still syncs at normal speed. So I've now reinstalled iTunes, (having deleted the new phone's backups) plugged in the new phone and asked it to sync using my original (fast phone) back up, but it still runs at the slow transfer rate even though this is a new phone! Tried restore again and still no change.
This is very frustrating. My original phone still syncs very fast. Getting the phone swapped means that it is unlikely to be a hardware fault with the new phone but it seems no matter what I do (delete the new phone's backups, sync to my normal phone's backup, install as a new phone, reinstall itunes) it still transfers at about 1/12 the speed of my original.
I'm completely stumped and would welcome any suggestions as to what I could try next. -
Transfer rate between PC and Mac painfully slow! Linksys WRT150N
Hey everyone, I have my new Macbook Pro wirelessly connected to my Linksys WRT150N, while my PC (running Windows XP SP3) is connected through wired.
I originally had dd-wrt on the router, but took it off due to the signal would randomly drop. Now that I have the original firmware back installed, the transfer rate is painfully slow. Just trying to transfer any type of media it goes about a MB per min.
Is there anything I can try to change on my Mac or my router? This is what you are after I think....

Data Transfer methods between FPGA and RT
I have 10 values that I combined into a cluster that I want to send to the RT controller. The problem is if I just the read/write FPGA, I only get 1/10th of the data. I am assuming that it is the time taking to transfer from FPGA to RT. So I looked into DMA FIFO. When I use this, I do capture the data, but I notice jumps/shifts in the data. It's almost like the buffer fills up, and then dumps it at the last sec. To reduce this, I went from 10 values from the cluster to 2, and there were not shifts/jumps. The problem is I need all 10 values. So I'm wondering if I need to increase my DMA FIFO or if there is another meathod I need to use like Shared Varibles?
Thanks,
guilioThe one thing I still don't understand is what you mean by this "jump" in your data. Can you be a bit more specific about this? What I mean by jump. The elements coming from the FIFO in the RT controller will display on my array visual aid normally. Then you will see the data jump. Here is an example. I am bringing out 3 elements, X Y Z into an array. I'll read lets say 9 elements at a time. So my array, after I transform it into a 2D array for saving will look like this. [x y z;x y z;x y z]. At some points in time, the array will jump and look like this. [x y z;z x y ;z x y]. Then it will go back to how I expect it to look [z x y;x y z;x y z]. Right now, I am reading ~3000 elements. The elements remaining depends on what else is going on. If the visual aids are deleted, then elements remaining will never max out and thus, I won't get jumps. If I put visual aids in, then I get jumps because elements remaining maxes out. This leads me to believe that the FIFO is filling up and since it can't release all the information fast enough, then it just dumps it and fill it up again. The weird thing about it, It doesn't happen in a pattern (every 3000 elements). I tried putting them in seperate loops, it still slows things down. I tried queing/dequeing, still slows it down. I need to be able to read all elements fo all 3 DMA transfers at once. Maybe it will help us locate the problem. Otherwise, your DMA FIFO looks OK. Can you verify the number of times your data is written to the FIFO from the FPGA? When I put a clock in to measure loops speed, it was showing 8-9us. I can't have this no more than 10us or I will missed data. I would like to see a definite count of this. Then on the RT side, what does the "Elements Remaining" output look like? As before, elements remaining depends on what else is going on. If I just have the DMA FIFO's, then I can adjust the read elements number so all three don't max out, but as soon as I put something else in, it will max out. Since this is a FIFO we should be able to keep very close track of elements in and out.
Let me know if you need more info. I know about the FXP point transfer, unfotunately, not all my FXP elements are the same data type.
Thanks,

Slow transfer rate between external hard disk and TC
Hi all,
Yesterday I installed a new 1TB TC and attached to it an external LaCie 500 GB HD and a printer (HP 3325) via a USB hub to it. The thing is that although the transfer from the LaCie to my Mac is smooth via wifi, I can't say the same about the data transfer rate between my LaCie and the TC. Whilst they are connceted via USB, it seems that the speed is just half that from the LaCie to my Mac.
Any of you have faced the same problem or know why that is happening?
Thanks in advance,
Ramon M.Ramon, Welcome to the discussion area!
You have to remember that the data is not simply going through the USB port from the hard drive to the Time Capsule.
The data is actually going from the hard drive to your Mac (through the Time Capsule) and then from your Mac to the Time Capsule. Therefore it is causing twice as much traffic as a simple transfer between your Mac and the Time Capsule. -
K9N SLI PLATINUM low data transfer rate
Hi, (sorry for my pour english) I had to go back to Winxp native SATA/IDE drivers and my pc crash & BSOD problem it's gone! :D (BSOD when i install some programs or some games, listening music and moving data at the same time, etc.) now i'm available to execute multitasks without any troubles. But now the transference it's quite poor , I think this is an easy and temporary solution for this big problem.
I bought my PC on 2006 and the Windows XP drivers are from 2001, aren't new Nvidia/MSI drivers to fix this annoying problem?
Thanks.
AM2 3800+ X2
MSI K9N SLI PLATINUM, bios 1.4
2 x 1GB OCZ DDR2 6400 Platinum
PSU PowerCooler 550w
HD WD3200 SATAII
NX7900GTI've got nearly the same problem, but a little worse. My data transfer rate seems very slow for a 100mb network and if I start copying files over the network, after only a couple of megs I lose connectivity to the network completely! I've removed the network cable and windows notices this, and when I put it back in windows also notices the change, but the green and orange lights on the port itself stay on solid. If I reboot windows everything comes back. I don't have problems browsing the web, seems to only happen when the ethernat port is running close to full load (for the connection speed of 100mb as apposed to 1gb).
Anyone else seen this? I'm on the latest drivers, the latest bios and I've tried disabling on of the network ports in the bios but his didn't work.

How to find the max data transfer rate(disk speed) supported by mobo?

Last edited by Inxsible (2011-03-27 04:40:49)I just checked my BIOS and my current setting is set at IDE although it also mentions that the default should be AHCI. Currently I have a dual boot of Windows 7 (need it for Tax software) and Arch
So I guess, when I get the new HDD, I will first set it to AHCI and then install the OSes on it. See if NCQ helps any, and if not I will turn it back and re-install (if I have to). I am planning to have Windows only in virtualbox in the new drive.
Anyhoo, while I was in the BIOS I found two things which I had questions about :
1) Under Onboard Devices --> Integrated NIC , my setting is currently set at "On w/PXE" and it says the default should be just "On". Would it be ok to change it back to On since its a single machine and its not booting an OS on any server. I just don't want to have to re-install anything now since I will be doing that in the new HDD.
2) How would I know whether my BIOS would support a 64 bit OS in Virtualbox? I checked some setting under Virtualization, but they weren't very clear.
I will edit this post and let you know exactly what settings were present under the Virtualization sub-section. -
Linksys WRT54GS vs Dlink DI-524 data transfer rate different.
I was moving some files from one PC to another with the Linksys router and noticed it was slow so I ran DU Meter and Max speed of transfer was 156kb. I then hooked up my Dlink and did the same test and was getting7mg. Why the difference in data transfer speed?

Message Edited by Chadb on 08-23-2007 04:00 PMI installed the new firmware last week. I'm here because of it. I now have intermittent drop/hang/mixed mode problem everybody's complaining about, which I never had before on my GS, till I went from 1.52.0 to the latest 1.52.2 on a v5 GS. Nobodys responded to me, so I'm rolling back.... I can't keep swapping to G only everytime the kids want to use thier PSP's

Determining Data transfer rate through modem in java
Hi,
I want to write an application in java which will communicate with
connected modem of the system and it will detect the data transfer rate.
I want to know how much data is transferring(upload/download)through modem and in a specific time how much data is transferred.
I will give some max upload/downloading limit for a specific time and if data transfer exceeds that limit,it will show message.
e.g if i fix max upload/download data transfer limit by the modem is say 10GB/20GB for a specific time span say for 15 days. Then my program automatically will start when the Modem will be connected and keep a log of data transfer(upload/download)and if data transfer goes beyond limit then it will show message. Also i would be able to see how much data is transferred for any specific day.
I want to know this type of application is possible in java.If yes then
which API's i need to use.
If this type of program is available in some site in other language then also i will be helpful.Pl give the links.

PradiptoHi,
i want to do it in java only to explore the power of
java.I agree with Abuse, Java is not designed for such applications. I'm not even sure if you can solve your problems with Java. -
Disk data transfer rate - iMac 2013
Good morning Apple fellows
First of all, sorry for my troubled English speaking, I'll do my best to explain the issue I'm having in the best way possible.
Yesterday I finally received my new iMac (I'm a proud Apple user since 2006), the machine has these specifications: 16 GB Ram, i7 processor, nVidia GT 780M, and a SSD drive of 1TB of capacity.
Under Mavericks everything runs smooth and fine, no issues at all, just perfect, the fastest machine I've ever had. Unfortunately, I had to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp (I'm a mechanical engineer and I use Autodesk Inventor to do my stuff).
After completing the installation of the Microsoft OS, I instantly noticed some laggy performance while running Windows: I installed as asked all the Bootcamp drivers with the USB pendrive that I prepared, but both the startup of the system and the normal use were a bit slow, even slower than my old '09 iMac.
In order to understand what the problem was, I ran the system performance test included in Windows: all the ratings I have are maxed out at 7.9 (7.9 is the top I think), in exception of the "Disk Data Transfer Rate", that is 5.9. As far as I remember, this value is typical for a mechanical disk drive, not for an SSD drive supported with PCIe connections.
Does anybody here got a similar issue? Is there any driver package that I have to install in addition to the Bootcamp drivers?
Thanks in advanceThat is because the WEI uses your boot disk as the default device to measure performance, and, for instance, a Velociraptor 10 K disk, does not score more than 5.9. The story changes when the test is run on other disks, like my array:
However, this measurement is totally worthless in real life. You should look at practical benchmarks like PPBM5 Benchmark -
Question about transfer between oracle and sql server
Could i program to transfer lots of data between Oracle and SQL Server quickly?
I have tried make two connection between two databases, but it took me lots of time to transfer data.
How could I do it?
ThanksHi,
If you need to move data fast, then use the Oracle Migration Workbench to Generate SQL Server BCP data extraction scripts and Oracle SQL Loader files.
This is the fastest way to migrate the data.
In the Oracle Model UI tab of the Oracle Migration Workbench, right mouse click on the tables folder. there is a menu option to 'Generate SQL Loader ...' scripts. This will help you migrate your data efficiently.

Limit Hyper-V Replication Data Transfer Rate
Hello,
i need to limit data transfer rate for Hyper-v replication because between two Datacenter have bandwidth limitation.
Please suggestYou can use the New-NetQoSPolicy cmdlet to set the throttling limits -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh967468.aspx. Based on the destination port (the port on which the replica server has been configured to receive replication traffic - maybe it's port 80 in your case) or the destination subnet, you can specify
a throttling value (-ThrottleRateActionBitsPerSecond) or assign a weight (MinBandwidthWeightAction).
Eg: New-NetQosPolicy "Replica traffic to 8080" –DestinationPort 8080 –ThrottleRateActionBitsPerSecond 100000
or check the link to Thomas blog
http://www.thomasmaurer.ch/2013/12/throttling-hyper-v-replica-traffic/ -
Data transfer rate Airport Extreme
which is the data transfer rate of the USB port in the Airport Extreme (4ta. Generation)...???
The HDD installed in that port, reads and writes very slowI executed the test and I have a rate of data transfer of 1.9 escrtura of Mb/s and 2.7 reading Mb/s…. this is very under… What I can do.?
I even reinitiated the Airport and itself with the problem. I directly tested with the ports of iMac, and have DRT of 25.8 and 18.4 Mb/s
Ok, I am assuming that your measurements are in Mega Bytes per Second (MB/s) and not Mega Bits per Second (Mb/s). Even so, I would agree that you are getting low data transfer rates.
What is the make and model of the USB HDD that you have attached to the AirPort Extreme? Is it formatted in HFS+ or FAT32?
Also, the 25.8 & 18.4 readings when you have this drive attached directly is a bit low as well. I would expect something more like: 35 MB/s (read) & 25 MB/s (write) for a USB 2.0-connected HDD. -
Hi - I would like to build the logic in which it should accomodate the communication redundancy using serial RS-232 for Data Transfer b/w Host and RT irrespective of TCP/IP Data Transfer.
I want to do data transfer b/w host and RT through RS232 VISA portal whenever TCP/IP ethernet cable has been unplugged from the controller continuosly , it should keep on checking for TCP/IP link re-establishing also , when ever the tcp/ip link established again that time the communication should be using in that link only. This is accomplished by deploying the RT vi as execuatbale file. I made some logic regards to the above said logic , bur it was not working as much I expected.
I request you to go through the attached two VI's and let me know , what I did wrong in that,
Please do the needful.

Is it possible to transfer music between iPhones and iPods with out using iTunes
Is it possible to transfer music between iPhones and iPods with out using iTunes
Nope. Both require iTunes on a computer to sync music from.
Unless the iPod is an iPod Touch and the music was bought from iTunes. In which case the Touch can simply go to the iTunes App, under Purchased and download the purchased songs for free.
