Difference in my catalog file size in backup

Currently using PSE8 on pc platform.
Just out of curiosity, why is the "my catalog file" which PSE references on the local drive  so much smaller a full backup of the catalog to an external drive?

Thanks, thats what I had expected, however I have never restored a backup so I could not confirm this for myself.

  • Difference in generated PDF file size between distiller 6.0 and 10.0

    Hi,
we are currently using Distiller server 6.0.1 on Windows server 2003 to convert PS to PDF, we want to upgrade our operating system to Windows server 2008 R2 but distiller server is not supported on this,
so we are evaluating Acrobat distiller 10 which comes along with Acrobat pro x but we noticed some slight difference in the generated PDF file size, for the same PS the distiller server 6.0 generated PDF
file size of 55 KB whereas Acrobat distiller 10 generated PDF file is 53 KB. The output looks same but wondering whether is it safe to continue further with the file size difference, it would be good
if you could provide some insight into why the file sizes are different between these two versions.
    Thanks,
    Anand

  • File size in backup

When backing up to TC are the files just being copied in there original format or are they being made smaller? In other words is a 100 mb Quicktime movie file the same thing when its backed up on tc

No. Time Machine does not do compression. Compare the size of your data on your primary drive. Now compare that with the size of the backup file. It's about the SAME size if you have just started backups. But it is LARGER if you have been backing up for some time. This would not be the case if data was being compressed. See the Apple web site quote below:
    *Anatomy of a Backup*
"For the initial backup, Time Machine copies the entire contents of the computer to your backup drive. It copies every file exactly (without compression), skipping caches and other files that aren’t required to restore your Mac to its original state. Following the initial backup, Time Machine makes only incremental backups — copying just the files that have changed since the previous backup. Time Machine creates links to any unchanged files, so when you travel back in time you see the entire contents of your Mac on a given day." [http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/timemachine.html]
    Hopes this clarifies things.

  • List backup; show different a different size to backup pieces

    Hi,
when I exec a "list backup;" with RMAN the show Size values of a backup piece are not equal to file size of backup pieces. Sometime there are differences up to 50%. I found no reason why that both values differ, as "Size" is sometomes smaller and otherwise bigger than the file size.
Does anyone has any idea ?
    thanks in advance,
    greets,
    Rainer

I think You cannot restore 11.2.0.1 database to 11.2.0.2 .You can. See MOS Doc.ID 790559.1 - RMAN Restore of Backups as Part of a Database Upgrade
Said that I've never tried to restore an Enterprise or Standard edition to a XE one, I think the problem here is not the version, but the edition, due to XE limitations.

  • Problem with CS2 edit file size

When I create a new version of a 3-4mb original, make a few simple modifications in CS2 and save back to Aperture the resulting version is almost 70mb. If I export this version from Ap back to my desktop and check file size it is back to near the original size. Yet, when I check the file size stored in my Ap library, it is 70mb. This will fill my hard drive in a hurry! Can someone help explain this ??

I did a little more experimenting by making external edits in PS on a 3.9mb JPG file in both Aperture and Lightroom to see what the resulting file sizes were. In both cases I left the master outside the library so that I could see file additions in both the application library and in the folder containing the originals and revisions. I looked into the file directories to determine real file sizes rather than relying on info from the applications. The increase in library file size was small in both apps. However, there was a significant difference in the revised file size between Aperture & Lightroom in the folders containing the originals. The best I could do in Aperture produced a 24.6mb psd revised file, which showed as a version in the App., in addition to the master. Lightroom gives the option to revise the master or revise a copy of the master when exporting. When revising a copy of the master, the result was a new jpg file approximately the same size as the master - 3.9mb - which appeared as a version. This is what I would like to be able to do in Aperture.
I have been using PS for several years for all my photo enhancements and have developed a pretty comfortable and effective routine. Having used Aperture for a couple of months now, I can see that most minor edits can be done more easily in Aperture, but the same is true of Lightwell. Although I would probably only use PS on less than 25% of my keeper photos, this increased storage requirement seems more trouble than the advantages of Aperture vs Lightroom are worth. Maybe Apple will make a change in the next revision that will effect this situation and make Aperture more desirable for JPG shooters.
    Thanks Again,

  • Export QuickTime file with new audio and maintain the file size and quality as the original.

I shot some footage for a client yesterday and ran into an issue. To make a long story short I have QuickTime mov files shot with my Panasonic GH4 that have a buzzing sound in the audio track. I have clean audio from a recorder that can be sync'd. Is there a way for me to do this for the client and deliver them as the same QuickTime file but with the clean audio and keep the file size close to the original and not have quality loss in the image?
If so I will probably put all of the spanned clips together from each interview and sync the audio before delivery. I am just not sure which codec will give the client the same quality footage compared to the originals and not have a massive difference in the overall file size. They did request that they be Quicktime MOV files though so that is a must.
I don't see this as an option in the codecs in the export settings in PP, but is there a way to export as ProRes or another MAC native codec that will save them from having to convert it on their end? I am on a PC with Adobe CS5.5 so I am not too familiar with MACs, but from what I understand they would need to convert the files if I sent them straight out of the camera.
I found some related search results for this but they pertained to "Best quality" for export. I am not sure how the varying options work but I don't want to create files that are considerably larger, just not less quality.
If anyone has experience with this it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Cole

Here's the workflow: I imported the video footage into iMovie '08 and did my edits. Then I exported it (share) to my desktop with compression set @ 740 X 480. Then I used QuickTime Pro to fix the audio track. The file plays perfectly with both audio tracks working. It's a QuickTime file (.mov).
I hope this jars any replies as to why the file when uploaded to my iWeb gallery drops the second audio track.

  • Images cut from Microsoft Word document being picked up in the file size by Acrobat distiller

    Hello All;
I have a large MS Word document (book manuscript) with almost 400 images (all grayscale) and found that the tiff images needed to be replaced with jpegs to reduce the file size. I created the jpegs, cut the tiff images from the document, and inserted the replacement jpeg image for each tiff image cut. It reduce the file size in Word from 595 Mb to 210Mb. However, when I ran the distiller, it is somehow picking up the file sizes of the tiff files as it still gives roughly the same output (595 Mb) for the Acrobat document. Is there a way I strip out the tiff image overhead from the pdf or a way I can cleanse it from the MS Word document? Thanks in advance.

Acrobat automatically compresses images when a PDF is made, usually doing something equivalent to JPEG (it's your choice, check the creation options).
So, changing from TIFF to JPEG in the original file will usually make not a bit of difference to the original file size.
There is no simple 1 to 1 connection between the size of a Word document and a PDF. Some things are bigger, some are smaller.
You can experiment with Save as ... optimized PDF settings. Also, use Audit Space Usage in that dialog to see what is using the space.

  • InDesign Transparency Effects - Problems with Image Quality and File Size

    Hello,
We are experiencing new problems exporting InDesign files to PDF.
To summarize, though our largest workflow is to create files for offset printing, we also deliver our work to PDF for mounting on a website so our clients can download directly from the web. Our new problem is Transparency Effects, and creating a PDF that will both have a high quality (or resolution), and be a small file size.
We are working with multiple page documents (24 to 48 pages), and would very much like to work with InDesign Transparency Effects. However, after spending much time testing a variety of PDF types, we are finding there is a radical difference between quality and file size. I was curious if anyone has had these problems, and if there is a simple answer. InDesign is an incredible program that allows us to design on the fly with Transparency Effects, but, if we are going to experience these problems, we will have to eliminate these wonderful tools.
Can you help me or lead me to information online that will help.
    Thank you,
    Lain

Please don't post in multiple forums. Your question has nothing to do with the PDF language and specifications, but rather PDF workflow or InDesign. I've responded to your other posting and am closing this thread.

  • Applescript: file size not recognized as changed in script

This is difficult for me to explain.
I'm trying to delay the start of a Folder Action because it's starting before the file has time to finish writing.  So I've written a script to try and sample the file size, wait a few seconds then sample the file size again, compare the two sizes and as long as they are different I figure the file is still being written.  However when I implement the code below I don't see a difference in the two file sizes.  And the delay command does not seem to be working.  I put the display dialogs and the beeps in there for troubleshooting purposes.
    on run
              tell application "Finder"
                        set myDelta to 1.0
                        set mySize1 to 1.0
                        set muSize2 to 1.0
              end tell
              repeat until myDelta = 0.0
                        tell application "Finder"
set myFile1 to item 1 of folder "abc" of desktop
set mySize1 to size of myFile1
      display dialog mySize1 as string
      beep
                                  delay 8
      beep
set myFile2 to item 1 of folder "abc" of desktop
set mySize2 to size of myFile2
      display dialog mySize2 as string
                                  set myDelta to mySize2 - mySize1
      display dialog myDelta as string
                        end tell
              end repeat
    end run
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I find that if I'm copying a big file from a thumb drive Lion will hold off until the file is finished writing (e.g. around 1 minute), however if I'm bouncing a file from ProTools (i.e. 20 min)  the Folder Action starts immediately and the desired action does not work (even with your code or my code.)
Maybe you might want to try another version of the Folder Action script, where I've added a “with timeout” statement:
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
set thisFile to item 1 of added_items
        with timeout of 3600 seconds
            tell application "Finder"
                activate
                repeat
set size1 to size of thisFile
                    delay 1
set size2 to size of thisFile
                    if size2 = size1 then exit repeat
                end repeat
display dialog "Done!" with icon 1
            end tell
        end timeout
    end adding folder items to

  • Reduce image quality (and file size)

Is there a simple way to reduce the quality of all backgroung
images ? (there are all bitmap images, about 3 MB each of them)
I imagine that by reducing the image quality, the file size
    will be less huge...
But I wasn't able to find a way to do that...
(the option about JPEG quality in project/preferences has no
effect, because all background images are bitmap... )
    Any idea is welcome !
    Valérie

    Hi Valerie
I have been doing some research on this -- the issue of file
size (relating to both .cp and .swf) crops up a lot on this forum,
so I wanted to find out which were the critical factors relating to
    images.
My findings show that there are two critical factors:
-- Slide Properties: Quality (High, Standard, JPEG,
    Optimized)
-- Format of original image file (used for slide background
    or inserted image object)
To summarize the results of my testing:
    Slide Quality
Changing the slide quality from High
to Standard or JPEG makes little or no difference to the size of
the .cp file but can *significantly* reduce the size of the
    .swf
This is an especially useful way of
dealing with the very large .swf file sizes caused by importing PPT
    slides
    A .swf consisting entirely of
imported PPT slides with complex backgrounds may be reduced to less
than 10% of its original size by changing the quality setting for
each of the slides to JPEG and using a JPEG image quality setting
    of 75%.
    Format of original image file
For complex images such as photos,
the best image file format to use is (oddly) .bmp -- although it
results in a larger .cp file than other file formats (such as .jpg
or .png), it generates the smallest .swf output.
The benefit of using the .bmp format
is less marked if you have set slide quality to Standard instead of
High, but it can still cut the file size of the .swf output by up
    to 50%
For slides using a quality setting of
JPEG, there appears to be no difference in resulting .swf file size
between .bmp or any other image file format
A final comment: it is interesting to compare the size of the
.cp and resulting .swf for different Captivate projects. There is
typically an assumption that the .swf file will be smaller due to
compression. However, this is not always the case. For example, I
tested one project that used High slide quality and images that had
been inserted from .jpg files -- the generated .swf file was over 4
times larger than the .cp file. However, when I changed the quality
setting for all slides to JPEG, the .swf file reduced to less than
50% of the size of the .cp file.
I hope this information is helpful -- please contact me if
you'd like to see the detailed test data.
    Best regards,
    -Matthew Ellison

  • Styles-manual formatting-file size

Situation: exporting from InDesign (CS4 or CS5) to PDF. Does it make any difference in terms of file size, either in InDesign or in the exported PDF, whether text is formatted manually or with styles? Do unused styles bloat the size of either the InDesign or exported PDF file?
Most simply, an InDesign file with two text colors, and 10-15 tif images set to 150 or 300 dpi and actual size, totals perhaps 4 megs in InD. Exported pdfs configured for online viewing are about 1.2 megs. Is that about right? We would like them closer to 500KB or 800KB. Is that unrealistic?

Don't ake this as gospel, but as far as I know PDFs don't retain any style information, so it hould make no difference in the size.
Why not make a pair of test files, one with and one without styles, and let us know?

  • TIFF File Size

Sometimes when I save a JPEG as a TIFF, it creates a file that shows a file size of say 3MB, but sometimes a JPEG of similar dimensions and resolution will come out as a TIFF that is in the range of 20-30MB. What might be making that difference in the resulting files size?

    Hi,
I am not Up to the mark of your question ..
If you see the V$log you can get it.. Size of the redo logs can be determined either by examining the file system size or by reading the BYTES column on the V$LOG view. Then Check the number of redo Logs avaialble checked whether they are mirrored or etc., Combining the two figures we have a total redo log data at peak in one day. This is the amount of data that any backup facility or storage of Archive Redo Logs would have to take into account. This figure should be mitigated against the fact that manual switching of redo logs means that not all archived redo logs will be the full size.

  • Two drives shows difference in file size, two drives shows difference in file size

i have two drives on 'Lacie' and other 'seagate'. Both the drives have identical data, basically they are backup drives.
File size that shows up at the bottom of finder window is different in both the drives.
They have a difference of 3kb data. Though the indivisual files on the both the drives shows the same size.
My question is why would be there any difference in file size if both the drives contains exactly the same data?

SORRY FOR THE DUPLICATE THREAD.....Heh, there's nothing to be sorry about :)

  • Database backup file size is too small compare to actual database size

    Hi All,
I know that backup file size can be smaller than actual DB size (i.e., MDF size + LDF size). But in my case i am observing huge difference.
My Database size is 16 GB out of which 10 GB consumed by MDF and 6 GB consumed by LDF. But when i took the backup, the backup file size is only 1 GB!!!!!
I am skeptical about whether i am doing anything wrong. Please advice me.

Olaf is right it must be compressed backup:
To check if the backup file is compressed or not
    RESTORE HEADERONLY FROM DISK = 'Path to backup file';
Looks for column labelled "Compressed". 1 = compressed, 0 = not compressed.
If you are skeptical about backup file you can verfiy whether a SQL database backup can be read and restored:
RESTORE VERIFYONLY FROM DISK = 'Path to backup file'
If the backup is valid, the SQL Server Database Engine returns:
The backup set on file 1 is valid
