Difference in PDF page size when using Save versus Save As

I am having a problem when I save PDFs from Illustrator with the page size changing
When saving as a PDF from Illustrator CC (Mac OS 10.6.8) the page size of the resultant PDF should be the size of the artboard.
Create New File
Save as PDF (Illustrator Default setting)
Open PDF in Acrobat
The page size equals the size of the artboard
Open same file back into Illustrtor
Edit the file in some way (draw a box outside of the artboard)
Reopen the file back into Acrobat, now the Page size is different from the artboard.
If I resave the file using save as, essentially overwriting the old file, the artboard is back as it should be.
It is almost as if Save As is using the artboard, but Save uses artwork bounds.
This appears to be a glitch but I have not been able to isolate the cause. Tried trashing prefs, didn't help. Had th same problem in CS5, couldn't figure it out then either, so I don't think this is version specific problem.
This problem is specific to my workstation, as my co-workers do not have the same problem, unless they start working on a file I created. Could be some kind of virus like problem.
Anyone had expeirences with this issue? I had really hoped upgrading to CC would have cleared this up but it seems to be following me, which is why I thought trashing prefs would have cleared it up.

Finally found someone with the exact same problem. Our entire department of 7 people is having this same issue. It is strange becasue we can't isolate where it starts.
If we save our PDF back to .ai file,
close and reopen Illustrator CC,
open the .ai file and save to PDF again,
then the file is "clean" and works as expected.
But then somewhere down the line we get another file that does the same thing. Then any file we open after that will have the same problem, unless we repeat the process I mentioned. This has been consistent between Illustrator CS6 and Illustrator CC.
This started happening about 2-3 weeks ago (mabe longer?) and is killing us when we run our PDF to our step and repeat workflows because they use the trim and bleed size for placement and this is being ignored. I am looking for a solution as well.

  • Problem with page size when using redirected printer

I have a customer who connects to another customer's network via VPN, then logs into and RDS server running Server 2012.
This customer then opens an Excel file and tries to print it out to a printer that is local to her and of course shows as redirected when looking at Devices and Printers in her login on the RDS server.
The problem is that when going to File / Print on the Excel document, the page size is listed as Custom Size and if you try to select any other size from the list, it won't accept it and stays at custom size. If she selects another redirected local printer,
she can choose whatever page size she wants.
This is not selecting the paper size. She can change that on either redirected printer. So when she is trying to print an Excel file on legal size paper, the print comes out reduced as if it is trying to print on letter size paper even though legal size
    paper is selected.
I hope my description is clear enough. If not, please let me know and I'll try to explain further. So I'm trying to find how to fix this one redirected printer (a Brother MFC-7860DW) so that she can change the page size so when the document prints it occupies
the full sheet of legal size paper.
    Jonathan

Is there is a difference in printer driver for working and non-working redirected printers? If yes, can you match it?
Do you see the same behavior if you use Generic Text Only inbox driver?
    Thanks

  • Small Problem in Compute for Page Size when using inline overflow

    Hi Everyone:
It appears to me that in 11g when I am using:
    1) A table-form layout
    2) Inline Overflow
    3) Compute as the Table Width
The Compute does not seem to take into account the width of the "twistie" as I call it, which is a small triangular arrow that points right when there is something in the inline overflow and points down when you are viewing what is in the inline overflow.
The pages that have these 3 characteristics have a scroll bar along the bottom, that needs just a little more room. I am assuming that this is the "twistie" width not being taken into account.
I looked on this forum as well as the Release Notes to see if this was a known issue but didn't find it, and I can send you a testcase with the HRSchema, if you want.
I realize that I can use "pixels" instead of compute for the Table Width, but I thought I should report this to you if you didn't already know.

    Mary,
    Are you using JDeveloper 11.1.1.4?
I so, that explains it. This JDev release has some annoying layout changes. The good news is that JHeadstart 11.1.1.3 which has just been released should solve these layout issues.

  • Printing multiple sizes from a PDF - Choose page source by PDF page size is set

I've tried this in both Reader 7 and 8.1. What I am experiencing is this:
A user is printing a document which has both legal and letter sized pages. I have selected Choose page source by PDF page size when printing. The document will print all pages based on the first page. If I print just one page, it will print correctly.

The expected behavior would be to print each page on paper according to its page size. For example, if there is a PDF file with five pages, page one and two are letter size, page three is legal, and page four and five are letter. When I print all pages, the entire set prints as letter. Page three should print on legal. If I print just page three alone, it will print on legal.

  • Any control over page size when outputting PDF files?

Is there any way to control page size in the Book creation section (currently 8.5 x 11) or to control the final output page size when printing to PDF? I'd like to create some 10x10 pages (so I can print 10x10 photos) using the excellent Aperture book/album layout features.

It looks like this has been discussed in previous posts... I did find a nice workaround though which allows us to make pages with usable dimensions for going to photo printing...other than the 8.5x11 offered by aperture .

    Hi,
You may open the original form in FormsCentral and toggle to “Page View” at the lower right corner. Adjust the page content to make sure no page breaks in this view.
    Thanks,

    Hi heathers,
You would need to print the file to a new PDF with the appropriate page size.

    Moved to DPS forum.
You need to set up the pages appropriately for the target device. For iPad that's 1024x768.

  • Wrong PDF page size in Excel

When I use PDFMaker to "print" the print area of one particular spreadsheet, the Adobe PDF page size is 11.18 x 14.47 inches.
When I use Adobe PDF printer, the Adope PDF page size is 8.5 x 11.0.
    Excel Page size = Letter (8.5 x 11.0)
    Excel Page orientation = Portrait
Excel Page Parameter = Fit print area to 1 page x 1 page
    Selected Printer = Adobe PDF
Selected Paper size in Adobe PDF dialog boxes = Letter
Selected Paper size in PDFMaker Preferences = Letter
When I change the Excel Page Size to Tabloid (11 x 17):
Adobe PDF printer creates a page size of 11.0 x 17.0
Adobe PDF Maker creates a page size of 11.0 x 17.0
Can anyone shed light on the problem experienced by PDFMaker on the Letter sized request?
    I am running:
    Windows XP, SP3
    MS Excel 2007
    Acrobat 9.1.2
    PDFMOfficeAddin.dll version 9.1.0.0
    PDFMExcel.dll version 9.1.0.0

    Hello everyone!
It's been long since this topic was active but I just wanted to share my solution to a similar problem.
I was trying to use the built-in Save as PDF function of Excel 2007 and my sheet which also had some headers and footers was not coming out correctly.
From Page Layout tab, I clicked the small icon on the corner of the Page Setup. Then I clicked the Header/Footer tab and removed the tick next to where it says "Scale with document" and viola! I miraculously could export my sheet in the correct page size.
May this be helpful to not just who have had this problem before, but also the ones that will come afterwards!
    Cheers!

  • Unknown Error when using save for web

When saving a gif using the "save for web" option in Photoshop CC 2014, I get a "Could not complete operation. An unknown error has occurred" message.  I am using Mac 10.10.1.  I tried deleting the "save for web" pref files but same error happens.  Size of the file being saved (large or small) makes no difference.  No problems saving files using "save as".  Photoshop was uninstalled/reinstalled.  Problem is still there.

I think the reason why this question is asked often is because the FAQ entry is pretty lame and incomplete, especially for Mac users that by default have a color managed browser and by default have a screwed up rendering mechanism for untagged images.
Depending on your version of Photoshop, you can convert to sRGB before or during the Save for Web operation.

...I have been told that you are not supposed to embed the ICC profile in the document when saving for web because most monitors are untagged.
You convert to sRGB for the systems that do not fully support color management.
    and...
You include the sRGB ICC profile for the systems that do support color management.
Doing both covers your bum in most situations. You may choose to omit the ICC profile if you are working on common interface graphics that do not require strict color management. The ICC profile adds a few kilobytes to the file size that are not necessary on lesser graphic elements on a web page.

  • Selecting "choose paper source by pdf page size" causes page to print as mirror image thumbnail

Printing from acrobat reader 9.3.4 to a bizhub C220 printer/copier using the postscript driver in XP sp3. when you select "choose paper source by pdf page size" the document prints mirror image as a tiny thumbnail in the corner of the page? We have replicated the problem with different computers and other copier/printers. This does not occur when using the PCL driver. Any ideas?

Do you not get any options after you have selected print
then select Print using System dialogue
which then opend another box , where I select Layout
and can select how I want the document printed.
As you can see I do use an Epson Printer though, but this is the way when using Mac OSX

  • Export "Adobe PDF Page Size" ?

    Hello:
Is there a way to export custom Adobe PDF Page Sizes from computer to computer?  We have a series of custom page sizes for Architectural sheets and currently we have to enter them manually for each computer in the office.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Seeing 750k described as a huge PDF is amusing when I often need to send files for print that are 750 mb or more.
That aside, exported PDF nearly always is larger than distilled PDF because it can include a lot more information like transparency and color management intents. The warning about fonts just means that the preset is set to not embed fonts during distilling to reduce file size (so the viewer must have the fonts on the system for viewing or printing properly), and ID always embeds fonts during export unless they are restricted, so not embedding your fonts will be ignored. You can unembed them using the optimizer.
So why is a 750k PDF too large? Perhaps there's a better format all around for what you are doing.

  • Customizing PDF page size

    I have a 5 x 3 (index card) template in Word 2007 - in Portrait
I want to create a PDF of this document that I will use on an iPod Touch
When I Print Preview in Word, I get the 5 x 3 size preview. Looks perfect!
I selected Adobe PDF in the Printer Dialog box - clicked Properties - Adobe PDF Settings tab - and Added an Adobe PDF Page Size of 5 x 3 named "Index Card" - then selected it in the Adobe PDF Page Size drop-down.
When I print to PDF, I get my card printed on 8.5 X 11 in landscape - with the text a small portion of the page - centered and right justified.
I want to see a 5" x 3" pdf page size with my text filling the page.
    What am I doing wrong?
    I'm using Acrobat 7.0 Standard.

Thank you, GKaiseril. Your suggestions helped me resolve this.
For the record, here's the steps:
In MS Word, File  > Print  >  Click Properties button  >  Click Adobe PDF Settings  >  Click  ADD and create a custom defined "Index Card" size (Width = 3, Height = 5) then click Add/Modify to close the Add Custom Paper Size dialog box.
Verify that the Adobe PDF Page Size combobox shows "Index Card"
In the MS Word Print Dialog Box, select Adobe PDF as the Printer, and in the lower RH Corner, in the Scale To Paper Size combobox select "Index Card".
I found that I have to set the Scale To Paper Size combobox each time I print, or it defaults back to "Letter".
    Hope this helps!

  • Right Click jpg from Windows Explorer Convert to pdf page size issue

I'm running Acrobat 8 Standard and trying to figure out what controls the page size when you right click and select convert to pdf on a jpg file.  I've got several jpg files of all shapes and sizes and no matter what I try the pdf is always Letter Landscape.  If I use File - Create PDF - From File within Acrobat then the pdf retains the size of the original jpg and that is what I want the right click to do.

I wanted to add a little more detail.  Using the right click convert to pdf on any jpg results in a pdf that is landscape letter.  If the jpg is smaller than the page it is scaled up but if it bigger then it gets cropped.  I can open the same files from inside Acrobat and they convert without a problem.  Any thoughts on what controls the conversion process whenever using the right click feature on a jpg file?

    Hello,
I have a user that utilizes the "choose paper source by pdf page size" option when printing a PDFs. He has a PDF that has a letter sized page and a legal sized page.
I recently upgraded his Adobe Reader from 10 to 11 and now that option isn't working for him. The printer is an HP LaserJet M2727nf MFP.
Are their any bugs regarding that feature in the new Adobe Reader?
    Thanks!

If you have not updated Acrobat, try that before you go further. Currently AA9 is at 9.5.1.
