Differences between Express and Extreme?

Are the only differences between the Airport Express and Airport Extreme the ability to connect speakers to the Express (I don't think the Extreme does this) and the number of computers that can connect to the Extreme is higher than the Express? Is the range the same between both?
Anything else?
Thanks!

kat.hayes,
1. Yes, the antenna for the Extreme increasing the distance.
2. The ethernet port can be used for several things.
a. hooking to your Internet modem
b. hooking to a hub/switch for other wired components. (printer, computer, etc.)
3. Yes, the "N" series is supposed to be faster for in house sharing of video and other larger files. And Yes, anything shared "In House" (LAN) will be faster as long as the other equipment has "N" capabilities.

  • What is the difference between express and extreme?

I am wondering what is the difference between express and extreme and will there be any effect in performance if I am just using it at home?

I am just looking for router that gives me reliable highspeed wi-fi for personal use within my home.
Wireless performance is roughly equal between the two devices, with a slight edge to the Extreme since it uses a bit better antenna package.
If I connect the the hard drive to the extreme, does that mean I can back up all my data wirelessly through the port into my external hard drive?
Yes, if you backup manually, or use an application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.
No, if you were planning to use Apple's Time Machine application since Time Machine backups to a hard drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme are not officially supported by Apple.

  • Differences between express and pro

    Hi:
What are some key differences between the Pro and Express versions? I understand that Pro included in the studio package and express is a stand alone product. Anything else?
    Thanks!

Express is limited to DV, HDV and some AVCHD codecs.
Pro will handle just about any codec you throw at it and is scalable to hardware as well.
DVD SP, LT, Motion, ST, Cinema Tools are included in Pro. Color as well which is worth the whole package.
Only LT with Express I believe.

  • Communication between Express and Extreme possible?

Can you link and Express to an extreme using Airplay?

Extreme and Express can communicate as wireless network on the 802.11 bands, Express can extend a wireless network created by the Extreme.
What exactly are you trying to do?

  • Which airport is good to extend my wifi, what is the difference between the AirPort Extreme and the airport express base sstation

What is the difference between the AirPort Extreme and the airport express base station and which one can extend my wifi router.

With rare exceptions of a few older routers, neither one can extend a non-Apple router's network wirelessly - they are not designed that way - but you can extend the wireless network if the Extreme is hardwired to the router or you can connect wirelessly and join the network as an access point that will provide remote ethernet access but not produce or extend the wireless signal - here is a comparison of the Apple base stations - http://www.apple.com/wifi/

  • What is the difference between the airport extreme and the airport express?

What's the real difference between the airport extreme and the airport express except for the price and the size? Does one transmit with more range?

Range is about the same, maybe a bit better on the Extreme, which has better antennas.
The AirPort Exreme has Gigabit (1,000 Mpbs) Ethernet ports and the USB port will support a hard drive.
The Express has 10/100 (up to 100 Mpbs) Ethernet ports, and will not support a hard drive at the USB port.
The Express has audio capability for AirTunes while the Extreme does not.
If you don't need to connect a hard drive and don't need the faster Ethernet ports, the Express is a good value.

  • Difference Between Airport Express and Extreme?

What may I ask, is the difference between the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express? And why is there a price difference between them. And would I be able to use it for surfing the web and print wirelessly on my Macbook? Which would be worth it for me, Because I'm sorta on a tight budget...

That page does not explain what I think is the most significant feature difference. The Extreme has two Cat5 (Ethernet) sockets (abelled LAN and WAN) whereas the Express has only one (which serves as LAN or WAN depending on its configuration).
If your ISP allows you only one IP address per account, you need a router with NAT to serve multiple computers. Both Extreme and Express have a router with NAT inside.
With an Express, the Cat 5 cable socket is used up with the WAN (modem) input, so all your computers on the LAN must connect wirelessly. There would be no Cat 5 cable for the LAN.
With an Extreme, however, your local computers may connect either wirelessly or via the LAN Cat 5 cable socket (through hubs as necessary).
So, if you wish to add a Mac Book, say, to an installation that has one non-airport computer connected directly to the (Cable or DSL) modem, and the ISP will not serve more than one IP, you can connect an Extreme's WAN port to the modem and configure it translate that one IP via NAT to serve multiple local IP addresses on the LAN. Then you connect your non-airport computer to the Extreme's LAN port. Your Mac Book can then connect either wirelessly or also (with a hub) via the Ethernet LAN. You can't do this with an Express.
A secondary feature difference is that the Express supports AirTunes to drive a mini stereo audio output socket on the case of the Express. It also supplies digital audio via optical fiber through the same socket. Either of these allows iTunes to play over your house stereo system wirelessly. You can't do this with an Extreme.

  • What are the main differences between airport express and extreme?

what are the main differences between the express and extreme base stations.

In addition to Bob Timmons' link the main differences are as follows:
Extreme has a slightly more powerful antenna (might not be true but from experience it seems to be)
    Extreme has USB HDD sharing
    Express has AirPlay
Extreme has 3 Gigabit ports (don't be confused by Apple's page. Apple states 4 including WAN, 3 without WAN)
    Express is smaller
Express has 10/100 Ethernet whereas Extreme has Gigabit

  • Any software differences between new airport express and extreme?

I was wondering if there are any features or configuration differences between the two, such as configuring VPN passthrough.
The only difference I can see is using the USB for hard drive use.
Also, do you think the performance will be similar.  I know the time capsule actually rated slower than the extreme even though they use similar hardware.

  • Is there a difference between AirPrint and printing via usb printer plugged into an airport extreme?

My printer does not show up in the add a printer option on my iMac when plugged into the extreme. I have a HP officejet 5610 All-in-One. I want to be able to print wirelessly using my Airport Extreme.  Thank you

Is there a difference between AirPrint and printing via usb printer plugged into an AirPort Exreme?
    Big difference.
AirPrint for one will not work via USB, so you will not be able to print from an iOS device like an iPhone or iPad using this type of connection unless you look at additional software....that may or may not allow this option.
Assuming that you get the All-in-One setup using the USB port on the AirPort.......only printing is supported.
You will not be able to use any other advanced features like maintenance, scan, copy, fax, etc when the device is connected to the USB port on an AirPort.
If you plan to use the HP for other things, I would strongly recommend that you connect it to your computer.
My printer does not show up in the add a printer option on my iMac when plugged into the extreme.
This usually indicates that your printer model is not supported. Check with HP Support to see if they have any updated Macintosh drivers for the 5610 that you could download and install that might allow this.

  • Why would i connect a external hardrive to the airport extreme and what is the difference between LAN and WAN gigabit ethernet?

Hey just wanted to know what is the reason i would connect my external hardrive to the extreme and what is the difference between LAN and WAN ehternet. I know one is local and other is wide but can someone explain in simpler terms.

Connecting a hard drive to the Airport Extreme makes it available to be shared across all the computers on your network.
WAN (Wide Area Network) is your connection to the internet
LAN (Local Area Network) is your internal (or local) ethernet connections (computers, printers, etc...)

just purchased an Airport Extreme , what´s the difference between LAN and WAN

Check the Setup Guide for the AirPort Extreme to confirm that the WAN port accepts the signal from your modem or from another router on your network.
Other Ethernet devices on your network connect to the LAN <-> ports.

  • Whats the difference between list and lov ?

Whats the difference between list and lov ?
i can do the same things with a list what an lov can do .
infact a list is more better. cause the list doesnt hold/show a range of values, and only has the items value iteself.
while the lov can get all the values of items depending on the query.
    like
select ename, job, sal from emp
will show all the three items values in lov?

Also, if you're looking in the US store, the prices are:
    - Airport Express (small, no ac) $99 - Has audio out for speaker connection using Airplay. Can share a USB printer only.
    - Airport Extreme (larger, ac) $199 - No audio out, can share a USB printer or hard drive.
    - Time Capsules (2TB, 3TB at $299, $399) - have ac wireless and a backup hard drive for Time Machine which the other Airports do not have.
