Differences In "Combo Drive" vs. the "Double-Layer Superdrive" ?

i was looking at the base macbooks on the apple mac website and there is two different white models and one has the "combo drive" and the other has the "double-layer superdrive". is there much of a difference?
also, on those two base models, one has a 2.0Ghz processor and the other is a 2.2Ghz... is there really going to be much of a noticeable difference?
thanks!

The difference is that the combo drive cannot burn DVD - it can only burn CD. The SuperDrive can burn CD or DVD.
Both combo and SuperDrive can play cd's and DVD's.

  • What is the difference between combo dive (24x) and Double layer (8x) ???

    Hi everyone,
I am helping my girlfriend to purchase a new Macbook, so I would like to know (I guess she) what is the difference between the combo drive (24x) and double layer (8x) divers? Although I have a Macbook Pro, I could not give to her an right answer about this simple question—what a shame!
    Thanks,
    M

From my P.O.V, being able to burn DVD's is a fairly standard feature these days and is very useful. I have the 2.4 and am very happy with it, i would always buy the best one can afford at the time as it goes out of date so quickly, so i would personally go for the 2.4, yes, but it depends on whether she thinks she is actually going to need that DVD burning facility.

  • Can Combo Drive read dvd double layer?

Can Mac Mini Combo Drive read dvd double layer?
    Thanks

It should be able to handle commercially-made movie double-layer DVDs.

  • Difference between 8X Super Drive and 8X 'Double Layer' Superdrive?

Can someone advise me the difference, if any, between 8X Super Drive and
8X 'Double 'Layer' Super Drive. I often see both used in advertisments for
    Apple Computers. Thanks.

DVDs can be single-layer (4.7 GB) or dual-layer (8.5 GB). All drives can read both types, and burn single-layer, but only a dual-layer drive can burn dual layer. Macs have all shipped with dual-layer drives for several years. I think all drives currently sold are dual-layer, so it may just be an omission in some of the ads, unless they are for older equipment.

  • The combo drive can read double-layer DVD?

I own an iBook G4 (Late 2004) with a combo drive. Can I use the combo drive to install Leopard? I have know the install discs of Leopard is double-layer DVD.
    Thanks.

Hari, Welcome to the discussion area!
There is no special DVD drive required. Your iBook's combo drive will be able to read the Leopard disc.

  • How do I use the "double-layer" function with my iMac?

    Hi,
Just wondering who can help me. I want to burn a dvd using the double-layer feature. The thing is I don't know if my iMac comes with that application preinstalled. I don't even know if I need an application and which one. The only thing I have for the moment is the "LightScribe DVD+R".
    Thank you

"Double-layer" is a property of the media (the disk itself). There are no options in software necessary to support writing to it, it just uses the second layer if the data won't fit on a single-layer and the disk in the drive has a second-layer.
As far as software is concerned, there's no notion of "layers" on the disk. The software simply sees the disk as 4.5G (a regular DVD+R) or 9G (DVD+R DL). Handling of writing multiple layers is handled by the drive itself.
You'll note that you can't treat single-layer discs as double-layered ones. The drive can tell what sort of disk was inserted.

  • New Double Layer Superdrive

OK, so the new MacBook Pro just released has a double layer superdrive. Yet us early adopters were told it could not be done because of the size of the MacBook. Hmmm, so does that mean we are going to be left out in the cold with no options for upgrades?

Almost certainly. Only on one occasion recently has Apple offered upgrades for their laptop drives (DVD to DVD-R in first and second gen TiBooks). The rumor was this was done to replenish a stock of spares for the Cube and TiBook range.
At the time the MacBook Pro was released, only Matshita made the 9.5mm drives used in the MacBook Pro (vs 12.5mm drives in the Powerbooks and most PC laptops).
Either Apple has rearranged things significantly inside (which I doubt) or Matshita has released a 9.5mm Dual Layer Superdrive (most likely). There may be a third party company selling the part at some point in the future which could allow an upgrade (Part will probably be called a UJ-867, but I'm sure pictures will appear soon)

  • Portege R600 - Is the DVD drive compatible with double layer disks?

The Australian specs for the *R600 PPR61A* state that the unti contains: *DVD SuperMulti Double Layer (7mm)*
The R600 however does not recognise any blank double layer DVD discs using either Windows burning tools or Toshiba Disc Creator.
Is this a mistake in the specs (being completely misleading), or do I have a driver/configuration problem?
Australian specs are available here: http://203.56.127.51/%2fTOPIC%2fproduct_details%2fproduct%2f20090325%2f Toshiba_PortegeR600_PPR61A-00300R_Specification_Brochure_Mar09.PDF

    Hello
Are you really sure that your ODD can recognize double layer DVD’s?
I mean on the specification of the ODD you can find a mark (#) and on the second page you find the following information about this:
#=> +CD/DVD write capability may vary depending on the type/brand of media utilized+
So I think your model is equipped with a non double layer ODD.
But you can check this for example with Nero as Chad suggested.
    What does Nero say?

  • DVD drive not burning double layer discs

I was burning a double layer DVD this morning, using Verbatim media, which I've never had any problems with. The drive I was using was a Pioneer DVR-A18M. All of a sudden, after I successfully burned one disc and inserted another DL disc, it refused to burn anymore. I forget the exact error message, but it was something along the lines of the media wasn't recognized, and this persisted for multiple discs that I tried.
Now, yesterday, a friend let me borrow a movie that had a crack in it and the disc came apart in my internal Pioneer drive - but it still worked after that. Odd thing was that the drive would still read and play movies, music, etc but it wouldn't burn anything, tho I don't know if it would burn things other than DL media because I didn't try.
Anyways, while the Pioneer drive - which I just bought after New Years - had been working well, I decided to replace it due to the fact that it wouldn't burn DL discs and a few other minor issues I'd been having with it. The one main issue was that if I left a disc in the drive for too long, I wouldn't be able to eject it or load any new applications. I'd have to reboot the computer to get the disc out, something I never had to do with the only Sony drive that came with my G5.
So, I replaced it with an LG GH22. Upon trying it out, it burned a single layer DVD-R, but will not burn a DL disc. The error message this new drive gives me is, from with Toast:
    Sense Key = Illegal Request
    Sense Code = 0x24
    Invalid Field in CDB
If it would help, I could put the Pioneer drive back in and see exactly what that error message was.
Oh, one last thing. I'd like to replace the E-IDE cable I have, as disc media is never able to reach its full burning speed potential. I'm guessing it's due to the old IDE cable, as my G5 is from 2005?
    Thanks!

Ok, I tried using Dragon Burn instead of Toast and it worked fine and the DL disc plays. I have to run out to MCAT class but when I get home, I'll mess around with it some more and try using Toast again, the old drive, etc.

  • Is there a manual eject button for the combo drive on the mini?

My angel of a 3 year old has managed to force two dvds into the combo drive, bless her, and so none of the software solutions to ejecting discs is much use to me, I'm afraid.
There's a soft, black button to the right of the disc slot, but I don't want to force anything until it's confirmed that it is indeed some kind of manual eject.
Otherwise, I guess it's back to base ...
    Many thanks for any help.
    Ian

    Hi Boece and IanB1967-
There is no manual eject mechanism, however one may be able to manually remove a disk from the drive albeit with varied results.
If two are stuck this may cause mechanical as well as electronic malfunctions within the drive itself. While an external is an excellent idea I think it is important to undo whatever damage has been done.
If you are daring enough you can open up the mini and replace the optical drive yourself. If under warranty or AppleCare just let them do it, even if they try to hit you for a charge. A firm yet polite stand may get you somewhere, as it is very difficult to actually jam 2 disks into a slot-loading drive.
    Luck-

  • EMac Combo drive for a DVD burner ( superdrive)

Hi . I have purchased a used eMac 1 ghz . it has a stock combo drive . i burn a lot of DVDs .I have a external plextor DVD burner ( super drive ) and i was woundering if it would fit in the eMac ? do i need to remove the little bezel at the end of the tray ? I have always owned a older Slower G3 type mac , this will be my fastest mac i would ever have . So i want to be happy with it .
    Thank you kindly

I guess burning to external is not so bad . i have been haveing problems when OSX tryed to verifi the burn and it fails so i though putting it into the computer would resolve that . I will keep the burner in the external case if it means i have to take the top off the optical drive itself .

  • Can I remove the drive door on my new combo drive?

I bought a Lite-On dvd combo drive. The drive door (face place? Whatever it is called) is not flat like the dvd drive it replaced. Consequently, I can't get the drive door bezel back on my sawtooth. The drive works fine. It is strictly an aesthetic consideration.
I could pry at it until it snaps off, but before I take the cave man approach, I was wondering if a better way was known. Suggestions?

No, you can't. The only way to get a larger capacity would be to sell your iPhone and purchase a new one.

  • Combo drive stops in the middle of burning a CD

My combo drive gives me this error message when I try to burn a CD in iTunes:
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry."
When I try to make a back-up CD with image or other files, I get this error message:
"An error occurred while burning the disc. This disc cannot be used."
The buring process seems to proceed just fine for about 20 seconds, then the error message appears.
I am using Maxell CDs and the lowest burn speed. The CDs can be written on fine by another Apple combo drive. The drive is still reading CDs and DVDs properly.
This is very frustrating since this is the 3rd combo drive for this computer. (The replacements were covered under Apple Care, but my 3 years are up.)
    Any tips?

    For a 1 1/2 hour movie, 4 hours isn't too long for a G4 Powerbook
Like I said in another message thread:
Creating DVDs requires LOTS of patience!!!!
DON'T panic and 'pull the plug' - walk away and let your computer 'do its thing'.
    However:
The computer has about 12GB left, and I don't think that should be a problem.
That definitely COULD be a problem! You should have from 15 to 20 GB free to do what you are trying to do.

  • 15-inch Double-Layer SD

    I have a 15" PB G4 with a SuperDrive bought in 2003. How do I know if it is a Double-Layer SD?
The reason for the question is that we had repairs done to this computer and it needed a battery firmware update. Now the batteries need to be calibrated. There are two procedures for calibrating, one for G4's w/o the Double-Layer SD and one for G4's with it. Thus the need to know which process to use.
    Thank you,
    JWTech

    JWT:
    I am not able to locate a 2003 15" PB G4 with Double-Layer. The 2003 15" came with Slot-loading Combo or 2x/8x/16x/4x/24x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW).
Or are you referring to the 2005 15" PB G4 which came with 8x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)?
    Cheers
