Differences in iMovie '09 compared to '08

I currently have iMovie '08 version 7.1.4. I want to be able to do more with iMovie instead of just basics (like having text scroll vertical rather than just horizontal, etc). I want to go further with movie making (for personal, not professional use) so what is the difference between the iMovie '08 & '09 from a customer perspective? Is it worth it? Should I make the upgrade or switch to a different program all together?

imho, iM08 was just a demo of the new app's interface - no 'full' editor, way too much features missing.
compare your version with http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/whats-new.html
simple things as cut-aways, slow-mo, complex themes, maps, pic-in-pic, etc. etc.
.. Is it worth it? Should I make the upgrade or switch to a different program all together?
every penny.
or dare the plunge to FinalCutExpress.. a professional editor, with a very steem learning curve (buy a book from Tom Wolsky) but simply fantastic.

What's the difference between iMovie and iDVD?

iMovie enables you to edit video footage - typically from a video camera - add titles, effects, etc.
iDVD enables you to create an authored DVD of your iMovie, complete with DVD menu, chapters, "extras", etc and can be played in a conventional DVD player.

  • What are the differences between imovie on ipad and imovie on a MacBook Air?

I am a YouTubeer and want to begin doing some better editing on my videos, because Windows Live Movie Maker is just not good enough I don't think. I would really like to use iMovie to edit my videos, but I am not sure if there is any major differences on iMovie on an iPad and iMovie on a Mac. Please help! I would prefer to get an ipad because it is much cheaper, but if the iMovie on an iPad is not as good, I will consider getting a Mac.

I don't know the specifics of iMovie as I don't use it but, almost by definition, an application for a Mac is much more powerful and versatile than an app for an iPad.

  • Is there a difference between iMovie '11 and iMovie HD?

Just getting started with trying to learn how to edit a video.  Also, is '11 short for 2011? In other words, if I referred to "iMovie 2011" would I be talking about something that actually exists?  I guess HD means High Definition.  What do you call something that is NOT HD?  Low def?  Regular Def?  The introduction to "iMovie HD"manual refers to "Magic iMovie"  Does the word Magic have special meaning, the way it does in reference to a mouse (mighty or magic being different)?  The   manual keeps referring to "the latest" but the copyright date at the back is 2005.  This makes me wonder if there is a more recent version of this manual.  Is there a place on the apple website to check on what the latest version is?  What is the Product I am asking abouit?  I don't think it is iMac, iPhone, iS 5 or None.  But those are the only choices I see below here.  Why is there not a choice of "iMovie"?  Or iLife?

more questions: is a "project" the same thing as a "movie"?
A Project is a movie you are making. You can use the clips from one or more events in a project. You can also use photos from iPhoto or Aperture or the Finder, and you can use Music from iTunes. When you "finish" a project, you use the SHARE menu to execute all your edits and create a file that can be played where you want it, in the size you want it. Even after you Share a project, you can go back and edit it some more if you like, but then you would need to Share it again.
Or is it a "project" while you create it and then it becomes a "movie:" after you finish it?
A movie is the result of your Sharing the project as I mentioned above.
This is something the Apple manual writers assume everyone already knows but I do not.  What is a Cache and how it is different from a Library?
You shouldn't really need to understand caches and libraries to use iMovie. The Library is a section of your hard drive that you don't generally need to go to. It holds a bunch of files that are used by the system.
A cache is a temporary place to hold something that you might need right away. For example, Let's say you are editing the first five seconds of a clip. It takes time to go out and get the clip off the disk drive and bring it into memory so you can edit it. A cache might be used, say, to save some time by going ahead and bringing in the whole clip (not just the first 5 seconds) and maybe the next clip too. Another example. You want a glass of milk. So do you go to the store and buy a glass of milk? No. You buy a gallon of milk and put it in the refrigerator. You drink your glass of milk. When you want another glass, you go to the cache (the refrigerator) not the store. The iMovie App handles all this behind the scenes so you don't have to worry about it.
Clip seems on the surface obvious (a short section of continous video/audio that is a building block for a movie) but as I think about it, I wonder.....It is BOTH audio and video?  or EITHER?  If a movie contained only one clip wouold it be called a clip or a movie?
The best way to understand clips is that it is a unit of video from the time you press record on your camera until the time you press stop. Ususally a clip is from 5 seconds to 20 seconds, but if you are recording a convert, a single clip might be two hours.   A clip is imported into an Event. A clip, or a portion of a clip, can be used in a project. It becomes a movie when you share the project. Could you take one clip and make a project from it with no editing? Sure.
Usually a camcorder will record both audio and video. You can, however, use only the audio or only the video in a project if you want.
If the audio and the video were from different sources would it still be a clip?
No, it would be two clips. You can edit them together. If you want to sync multiple video angles (from different cameras) and different sound sources (like really good microphones, separate from the camera) then Final Cut Pro X is your best bet. But for simple needs, you can combine audio clips and video clips in iMovie.
What are scenes?  What are sections?
A scene is usually a unit within your movie. It is up to you to define that. For example, if I was makeing a movie about my daughter's marathon, I might put a scene together about the pre-race preparations, a scene about the starting line, a scene about the midpoint, and a scen at the finish line. Each scene could have many clips. A scene is really where you use your creativity. I am not sure how you are using the word Section.
    What are effects?
An effect could be changing the color balance, adding a sound effect, adding slow motion or fast motion, adding an old-timey or black and white look, adding a freeze frame, there are a lot. You dont have to use them at all. It depends on the story you are trying to tell.
How many different types of panes exist? (So far, I see audio, titles, photos, transitions, effects, and iDVD) What is the difference between iDVD and DVD?
A DVD is a round disk that you put in a DVD player. You can create a DVD if you have DVD authoring software and a DVD burner. Five years ago, all Macs had DVD burners. Now, MacBook Airs, some iMacs, and some Mac Books no longer have built-in burners, but you can always add a DVD burner through a USB port.  Apple used to sell iDVD, which is an app that is used for DVD Authoring.  You can still find copies of iDVD on Amazon or eBay. More on disk burning here. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3711
More and more people are shooting HD video - and DVDs are only standard definition. And more and more people are sharing the video through YouTube and Facebook, which support HD. So Apple has been deemphasizing DVD lately. They have not updated iDVD since 2006. Still, if you make movies for friends and family who are not comfortable with the internet, DVDs are still quite useful.
What is video exactly and how is video different from a movie?  Does video include audio by definition?  Or are there different terms to refer to video with and without audio?
I think I already answered  this one.

  • What are the main differences between iMovie HD and iMovie 06?

I've searched the Apple website but cannot find anything regards information about the older versions of the software. If anyone has any ideas as to what the differences are between the two packages then that would be helpful as I was wondering if it was worth upgrading to iMovie 06.
    Thanks

Hi Anthony - you just need to be aware that imovie 06 has an annoying 'bug' which can affect the editing of still photos (especially significant if making a slide-show involving a number of editing adjustments). If the imovie trash is cleared, it is impossible to re-edit your photos (you will just get a black screen), so they must then be re-imported. This is because iMovie deposits the originally-imported version of the photo into the trash, yet this version is needed for any subsequent editing. This does not happen with iMovie 05.
So - you are OK so long as you do not empty the trash!

  • Differences between imovie 6.0.3 & 6.0.4

Does anyone know what the differences between the two versions are, and whether the update, 6.0.4 holds any advantage over 6.0.3

Since it can only be installed by iLife 08 users the answer is obvious.
It's not an update of iMovie 6 HD. It allows those that install iMovie 7 the functionality and different interface found in iMovie 6.

  • Is there quality difference between iMovie project and QT shared file?

I have several scenes that I want to piece together. Each scene was edited and saved as a separate iMovie project. I also "shared" each of the edited scenes to create full quality QuickTime files. I now want to compile the scenes to create a short film (actually an actor's demo reel). My reason for importing the QT files would be to have simpler uncut scenes as opposed to importing each of the iMovie projects, which would result in hundreds of tiny clips. It just seems like the fewer scenes/clips the easier it will be to make transitions, etc. But, will I lose quality (video or audio) by using the QuickTime files instead of the iMovie projects? Thanks.

it just looked lower quality in the QuickTime Player.
probably just my mind. thanks for the assurance.
Don't worry; your mind (and your eyes) are okay. What you see is normal.
By default, a Full Quality movie does not look beautiful. Playback quality is reduced, making it easier for your Mac to play the movie. But if you have QuickTime Pro you can adjust the movie's playback settings to see all the quality that's there. Even then it will appear to be "stretched". That's normal too.
Full Quality means it contains all the data of the source material with no loss of quality, not that it delivers great playback quality. A Full Quality movie is not intended for playing movies, and it's too large to share. Its sole purpose is to preserve the quality of the video/audio, letting you copy it from place to place with no loss of quality.
Actually, when you use QT Pro to adjust the playback settings of a Full Quality movie, it actually looks BETTER than iMovie's own display. iMovie never shows you all the quality that's there. (One of the benefits of having QuickTime Pro.)

  • How does iMovie HD compare with iMovie 4?

I've just finished my first project using iMovie HD, and it seems okay. However, before I open any older projects from iMovie 4, thereby converting them, I would like to feel assured that I won't lose anything in the process?
Has anyone encountered problems switching over? Such as loss of special effects, synchronized sound, title font substitutions, or whatever?
Some of my projects were complicated, with lots of titles and effects and imported sounds. I could keep back-up copies in iMovie 4, I suppose, but that's a lot of disk space.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
    -- David H

Hi there, David & David --
I'm not familiar with Slick GeeThree effects. Is that a component of iMovie 4 that I overlooked, or a plug-in?
The step-by-step procedure for importing iM4 into iMHD is VERY interesting. I notice the Save As command is new to iMovie, not included in iM4, which offered only a Save Frame As command that mystified me. In iMHD, the Save As command appears to create a smaller file that does not include the Media and Audio Waveforms folders. Evidently it maintains a link to those folders, suggesting they need to be kept on the same disk in order for the Saved As version to work properly. Is that true?
Your comments are all very helpful. I don't expect anyone to be aware of every possible glitch that may show up in the future, in any program, but it is reassuring to learn that iMHD has not shown any chronic ailments after months of use in the field.
    I really appreciate this information.

  • Saving to QT "CD" quality , differences between iMovie 5 & iMovie 6

Hi, iMovie 6 seems to save movies to QT "CD" quality differently from iMovie 5 , this is causing me problems with a site I work with. Can anyone tell me if this is a quirk of my settings or is a general "issue". How do you get iMovie 5 to save to 320 x 240 rather than 320 x 230?
    iM 5.....FPS 14.98 / iM6.....12.02
    iM5....... FORMAT : IMA 4:1, Stereo, 44.100 kHz
    H.263, 320 x 230, Millions
    iM6.....FORMAT AAC, Stereo, 32.000 kHz
    H.264 Decoder, 320 x 240, Millions
    Size: (iM5) 320 x 230 pixels..... (iM6) 320 x 240 pixels
    Best

You may want to look beyond iMovie. Visual Hub can convert to CD quality, ie, mpeg1 (and many other formats such as Flash-check to see if other formats would be better for streaming). MPEG Streamclip can also convert Quicktime files to other formats (check whether it can convert to mpeg1). It is free, but typically you need to buy Apple's mpeg2 plug-in. Roxio Toast can create VideoCDs (that have mpeg1 files) and can do a number of file format conversions.

  • Difference between iMovie and Movies

What is the differance between the 2

Also, in iMovie terms, a Movie is a kind of a Project as distinguised from a Trailer.
In a Trailer you add you clips to a pre-built template with graphic, title and music to simulate a Hollywood-style movie trailer.
In a Movie you either add your clips to a pre-built Theme with titles and graphics or start with no Theme and build a movie from scratch just you your clips.

  • Quality difference between Imovie 05 and 08.

Ihave a ordinary Sony handycam DV camera(DCR-HC39E).I have made some films with Imovie 05 and they were ok, but not as good as plugging directly from the camcorder in to the mac or a TV. Why so, isn´t digital digital. I bought the Ilife 08 hoping that the quality was better, but when i made the same film with 08 it was much more "blurry" than 05. I was realy dissapointed. Do I do something wrong or should I downgrade ?

    Hi
iMovie'08 is something else than iMovie 1 to 6 and should have been named properly.
If You got iLife'08 then You are entitled to download iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4) which
    is Great.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
If You copy/export Your movie back to Camera and a new miniDV tape You'll get
a quality which I can't differ from original.
DVDs - are hard compacted eg 25Gb down to 4.2Gb => There is a loss and depending
on how this encoding is done this quality vary from worse to better.
    I use Verbatim DVDs
    I use DVD-R disks
I burn at x1 speed (can be set in iDVD08)
    I use Pro-encoding in iDVD08
I sequre at least 25Gb free space on internal hard disk (important)
This gives me a result I can stand for.

  • IMovie, AVCHD comparability

    I'm new to Apple.
I got the 27" iMac and I was wondering if the iMovie that came with the iMac is capable of playing and editing the AVCHD files off of Panasonic Lumix GH1.
I've been shooting scenes with the highest resolution possible on the Lumix GH1 but the iMovie refuses to import files that were made with the Lumix.

Glad to be of help! And thanks to AppleMan1958 for reminding me of the way the import from archive worked. I hadn't used that feature for a while as I import directly from the camera, but know that AppleMan generally imports from his archives. Once he has imported from an archive (and knows that it works) he reformats the memory card in readiness for the next shoot, knowing that he now has the full capacity of the card available again.
Rather than use iMovie's archive process, I now use an application called Revolver, as it allows me to selectively archive clips from my 60GB hard drive camera. I normally don't delete clips from my camera after archiving, unless I need more space. With iMovie's archive process, it only allows archiving of the total contents of the camera. Revolver gives you an option to select clips individually when archiving. You can still import from the archive in the normal way using the iMovie menu item File>Import>Camera Archive. iMovie will recognize the archive.
The only downside to Revolver is that the metadata regarding the clips' actual recorded date and time doesn't carry over to iMovie when importing the archive - just the archive date comes over. This is the reason for me importing directly from the camera, but separately archiving using Revolver (which I'll often do at a later date - hence the date and time not matching).
Here's a link to Revolver (it's available on the Mac App Store):

  • Video much too dark in FCP compared to iMovie

NB I mistakenly asked this question in the Final Cut Pro X forum and should really have posted it here
Bit of a newcomer to this but as I have Final Cut Pro 7 thought I'd use it rather than iMovie which seems a bit primitive.
Shot a video of someone in the studio yesterday on a Nikon DSLR at 1280x720 25fps
Then ran it through Compressor to transcode it to Apple Pro Res for editing.
    All ok so far
Viewed the footage in iMovie and it looks fine but what a horror in FCP7 !!!
    It is so dark
    So what's wrong ?
Have seen an earlier discussion which seemed to think the monitor calibration is off but how can that be ?
iMovie displays the footage fine but FCP doesn't.
    Any thoughts guys ?
    See the attached screen grab
As you can see: FCP Viewer on top and iMovie below
The latest reply I have received was the following from Meg the Dog and it certainly helps but is not a complete solution so I'd appreciate any further views:
In FCP-7 go to the menu Final Cut Pro > System Settings.
When the System Settings Pane opens, click on the Playback Tab.
    Set Gamma Correction to Approximate:

Well iMovie seems to "read" ProRes fine as I made no additional adjustment to the image clip to view it (and after all it is an Apple codec so iMovie should be able to read it).
As I am a professional photographer my monitors are regularly profiled and I have no issues with the colour range, gamut and birghtness - indeed the iMovie output very closely matches the still shots that I did at the same time.
Of course I have no control over the monitor conditions you may be viewing it under.
Having made the adjustment that Meg the Dog suggested has indeed brought the FCP image more into line with the "correct" out put as displayed by iMovie but not all the way there - see the new image here:
You can now see that the player's hat is now visible but the gamma is still off - needs a higher gamma and possibly a little more brightness (exposure) too.
It is however workable and I will attempt to edit the footage now and if necessary tweak it to ensure a good output video.
When I compare this odd discrepancy with what I have come to expect from still photo editing programs I am a little bemused; If I make image adjustments in Lightroom, save the file, and then open in Preview/ Photoshop/ Aperture the image appears much as I expected it to (ie like the Lightroom output)
Why then am I having this enormous difference between iMovie and FCP7 ?
Come on Apple - there must be a simple solution to this.

  • What is the difference between QuickTime and iMovie?

Why would I need to upgrade my QuickTime to QuickTime Pro if I have iMovie? If I did have these two programs wouldn't that be redundant? They both edit the same kind of information, right? If you use both programs, please provide pros and cons. Thank you.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It would take a book to describe the differences between iMovie and QuickTime Pro, so I won't go down that road. Here's Apple's QT Pro Tutorial, which will help introduce its features:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/tutorials.html
I use QuickTime Pro every day to help with one task or another. It's a very useful tool, which gets you closer to the basic functions of QuickTime than does iMovie. It also helps you learn more about QuickTime software, the heart of iMovie. Like most other things, the more you understand the fundamentals the more you understand the program using them.
There's one important difference: Unlike iMovie, whatever task you want to perform with QuickTime Pro can also be done with an AppleScript script. So if you have repetitive tasks with movies, QuickTime Pro is a must. Just write a script that you call from within QuickTime Pro to perform just about any task, or collection of tasks. The script literally "tells" QuickTime Pro to perform the task.
I strongly recommend QT Pro for anyone who uses iMovie HD a lot, or who is interesting in understanding the underlying structure of QuickTime movies.
