Differences in sort order between iTunes and iPod

Can someone explain how the sort order of artists / albums works? It seems that it is different between iTunes and the iPod. In iTunes (7.3.1) I can enter data in the fields for Artist, Album Artist, Sort Artist and Sort Album Artist. When I get the tracks to appear in the order I want in iTunes, it doesn’t seem to transfer across to my iPod. I know there are some differences in how the sort order works in both, but how is it different?

ou must have an older iPod.
I believe the new sort order only works on the new iPods (Nano and Video)

  • Volume difference between iTunes and iPod?

    I use MP3Gain so that all my songs are the same volume. Whenever I play music in iTunes everything is the same volume like it should be, but when I listen to my iPod the songs are all their original volumes (before they were equalized) and therefore their volumes are all over the board. Anybody know how I can make the iTunes and iPod volume the same?

    Is Sound Check turned on in iTunes? It needs to be on in iTunes and the iPod in order for the iPod to use it.

  • Oracle jdbc driver: sort order between letters and numbers

    Hello,
    I am facing a very strange problem with sortering of data between letters and numbers.
    I'am executing the following SQL request:
    SELECT nummsg FROM CWD01 where nummsg = '00000001' or nummsg = 'AAAA0001' order by nummsg
    When this request is executed with sqlplus or SQuirreL, I receive the expected result:
    NUMMSG
    00000001
    AAAA0001
    When I execute the following java code:
    try {     String className = "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver";     Class driverObject = Class.forName(className);     Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("myurl", "user", "pass");     Statement stmt = con.createStatement();     ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(           "SELECT nummsg FROM CWD01 where nummsg = '00000001' or nummsg = 'AAAA0001' order by nummsg");     while (rs.next()) {           String x = rs.getString("nummsg");           System.out.println("nummsg " +x);     } } catch (Exception e) {     System.out.println("Failed: Driver Error: "+ e.getMessage()); }
    I receive the unexpected result:
    nummsg AAAA0001
    nummsg 00000001
    We are using the following version of Oracle:
    Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - 64bi
    and the following jdbc driver:
    Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) JDBC Drivers (ojdbc14.jar (1,536,979 bytes) - classes for use with JDK 1.4 and 1.5)
    Any suggestion?

    I checked, I'am sure of the problem:
    package test;
    import java.sql.Connection;
    import java.sql.DriverManager;
    import java.sql.ResultSet;
    import java.sql.Statement;
    public class Test {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              try {
                   String className = "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver";
                   Class driverObject = Class.forName(className);
                   Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@<server>[:<1521>]:<database_name>", "user", "password");
                   Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
                   ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(
                      "SELECT nummsg  FROM CWD01 where nummsg = '00000001' or nummsg = 'AAAA0001' order by nummsg");
                   while (rs.next()) {
                        String x = rs.getString("nummsg");
                        System.out.println("nummsg " + x);
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   System.out.println("Failed: Driver Error: " + e.getMessage());
    }The table CWD01 defines the column NUMMSG as VARCHAR2(8).
    The output gives:
    nummsg AAAA0001
    nummsg 00000001

  • 'Volume Adjustment' effect is different between iTunes and iPod

    I spent weeks using the 'Volume Adjustment' option on hundreds of quieter albums in my library to consistently match the louder volume levels of newer albums of my library. I wanted playback to be even across the board of my entire library. Some needed a small percentage of increase, some needed the maximum. To my ears' content, I played each adjusted album back in iTunes through powered monitors and studio headphones to make sure each album was just right.
    To my horror, after I sync my new library to my newly wiped and restored 5th gen. iPod Classic, the 'Volume Adjustment' effect is multiplied and the playback on anything that was adjusted is ridiculously louder than even the originally loudest album I have. I am also using the same headphones with my iPod that I used to adjust the albums in iTunes on my MacBook Pro.
    So pretty much my question is, "what the ****?!"
    In iTunes, the 'Volume Adjustment' is great, and playback is perfectly even across the board while I am actually playing back in iTunes. Either I need to go back and change each and every album I adjusted to a much lower adjustment and have to deal with quiet playback in iTunes once again or I can get ear-blasted by my iPod during track changes yet still enjoy the even sound levels in iTunes. I playback in iTunes as frequently as I use my iPod.
    There is no grey area and I am sad about this :'( Why is there no consistency? Has this been discussed before or does anyone have a solution?
    Thanks for your time,

    i don't own a classic but you might want to see if you find a +sound check+ setting on it. you may want to enable sound check in iTunes and the iPod.
    additionally, you might want to check out iVolume.

  • Updating Top 25 between iTunes and iPod Nano

    Is there someway you can update your Top 25 Most Played (smartlist), so it includes the playcounts from iTunes and your iPod Nano. If not, how do u just update your Top 25 list on the Nano, to also update on iTunes?

    It still doesnt answer my original question.
    I want my library on there (manually so it doesn't update it with itunes). But I want the Top 25 Most Played List updated with my iTunes and Nano playcounts (So if I play a song on iTunes, it will also count on the Top 25 Most Played list on the Nano).
    If I try to do the Top 25 list automatically, I can't add my library to it, unless I just make all songs and playlists automatically. But again, I dont want my library on there autmoatically, just in case i do change a song.
    Can somebody help?

  • Song volume difference between iTunes and iPod

    I changed the volume of a few songs that were too loud or too weak when playing in iTunes. Now the volume is fine when playing in iTunes.
    But when I tranfer my songs to my iPod mini, the songs where I boosted the volume are WAY TOO LOUD, and the songs where I lowered the volume are WAY TO SILENT !!
    It seems that iPod mini interpretes the volumes in a different scale than on iTunes...
    PS. Don't tell me to use the automatic volume control, because it's not fine enough to be useful...

    "what if i dont have a mac?"
    Buy one? (sorry, couldn't resist) : )
    I have only ever used mp3gain on Windows, and apparently it now supports AAC files also (as a Beta version).
    That's the only one I have personal experience of.

  • Album Sort Order in iTunes vs iPod

    WIth the newer Versions of iTunes, albums are sorted in alphabetical order ignoring the word "The". (i.e. On iTunes the following albums would be in this order: Sub Songs, The Super Songs, Suzy Music where on my iPod, the following albums would be placed in this order: Sub Songs, Suzy Music, The Super Songs lumping all "The" titles amongst the Ts.) Does anyone know why this sort feature is not the same on iPod AND iTunes? Please advise.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   14"

    Sorting has become a complete mess. Though, it's quite logical from Apple to sort albums by ignoring the because it makes searching for albums a lot easier since there are numerous albums (and artists) beginning with that word.
    But I guess that an answer to your question can only be given by an Apple engineer who makes iPod software.

  • Best ways to manually manage songs and other media between iTunes and iPod?

    I have a Video iPod (60 GB) and I connect it to two computers, with all my songs being on one of them (my Desktop). Since I connect to two, I have my iPod set to manually manage. My question is, is there any way for me to tell in iTunes what songs I have in iTunes but not on the iPod? If I could see that, it would make manually managing the iPod much easier. If this is available, could someone let me know how? If it is NOT available, are there other strategies people have used to make sure they are aware of what is on the iPod and what is not?
    Thanks in advance,
    - DTC

    I appreciate your help but I don't think you've read my message totally because I know that there should be a button where you can set it manually, but I strangely I don't have that kind of button (see: http://www.youruploadservice.be/uploads/iPod.JPG) Is it because I don't have a Mac? Because I'm sure I have the latest version of iTunes. Could you pls help?

  • HT1386 Play count wont update between iTunes and iPod Nano 7th Gen

    I have a iPod nano 7th generation and have the latest version of iTunes on my MacBook Pro... when I play music on my iPod and connect it to my computer, the play count doesn't update on my iTunes... The same can be said for when I play music on my iTunes...the play count wont update on my iPod...  any ideas how to fix this? AK

    If you want to make song files from your iTunes library available on your car audio system, and it connects using a USB port, a new iPod nano is a very expensive way to do it.  If that's the only reason for getting the iPod nano, you should return it and get a cheap 8 or 16GB USB flash drive instead, which costs less than $20.  Here's one that barely sticks out of the USB port.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SanDisk/SDCZ33016G/
    You can then leave it connected in the car all the time, except for when you want to update the songs.  An iPod is more fragile (especially screen and battery), and you'll have to always remember to remove it, in case the car overheats or freezes.  It would also be a target for thieves.
    For the audio file format, I can't believe any car audio system would ONLY play Window Media files, and not the most common type of audio files, MP3.  Songs purchased from the iTunes Store, and those ripped from music CD (using the default settings), are in AAC format.  It's possible the car system does not play AAC.  So, I would try songs from your iTunes library that are in MP3 format.
    You can use iTunes to convert songs from AAC (or any iTunes supported format) to MP3.  So, if MP3 works, and you need details on how to convert audio format using iTunes, please post back.  You cannot convert to WMA format (which is Windows Media audio) using iTunes.

  • Difference in song numbers between Itunes and Iphone

    I have an Iphone 3GS 16GB running iOS4.3
    It is set up to auto sync video and songs amongst other things.
    It is configured to sync 7 playlists of which 4 are smart ones, they are all in a playlist sub-folder. According to Itunes the total number of songs is 821 or 4.85GB. If you add up the number of songs in each playlist you get a number of 1132 but as some of the playlists contain the same tracks the actual number of different songs is the 821 stated earlier.
    Problem is that my iphone is convinced there are 1092 songs taking up 7.2GB.
    I can't understand why and would really like the 2.3GB back for other things as the phone is full.
    When I select each one individually the numbers initially tally but then the jumps are much larger.
    Any ideas?
    Message was edited by: jstubbs99

    Having sat here with a pen, paper and calculator it seems the problem occurs with the playlists that have songs already in other playlists that have been selected.
    It doesn't seem to matter that some are smart playlists or that they were in a sub folder (moved them out and selected them but same problem)
    As I add them the numbers tally at first but then jump beyond suddenly and I can't explain it or find out the reason.
    Very strange.

  • ITunes and iPod Sort Album Erroneously

    I have an album (Barnaked Ladies Maroon) that has the tracks ordered in the correct order when I select 'Album by Artist', but nothing else will give me the correct order. I specified the correct order in 'Get Info', and I made sure the information under the 'Get Info' window was the same for every track (that's what has fixed this issue in the past; if there were tracks with diffferent information under the 'Get Info' window, iTunes and iPod would mess up the order). I have tried reentering the information for all tracks at once, and it's all accurate except Track 12 is between Track 3 and 4 instead of after Track 11. That's as close as I can get (the default was a complete mess:12,1,3,2,5,10,6,4,9,13,7,11,8). No other album is like this. Can anyone explain this?

  • Is it possible to transfer music between iPhones and iPods with out using iTunes

    Is it possible to transfer music between iPhones and iPods with out using iTunes

    Nope.  Both require iTunes on a computer to sync music from.
    Unless the iPod is an iPod Touch and the music was bought from iTunes.  In which case the Touch can simply go to the iTunes App, under Purchased  and download the purchased songs for free.

    After replacing the hard drive on my G4 Powerbook and reinstalling Tiger I am no longer able to synch between itunes and my ipod (Classic 160gb) it would seem that the software on the ipod is of later date than itunes and I am unable to update itunes to the state prior to the original harddrive's failure for Tiger OSX 10.4.11
    Any ideas on the subject would be most helpful
    Thanks in advance

    The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.
    So, are you on version 9.2.1?
    Was it Tiger or Leopard you had on the drive before?
