Different approach for capturing vhs to fcp

yes i know an often asked question ... i happen to have a kona 3 card but it doesn't have any analog input capabilities. so the way i've captured vhs has been to simply to run it into my mini dv camera and record dv out from the camera through firewire. i think that's how most folks do it. works fine but i'm wondering if i'm losing some quality this way. does it make sense or does anyone convert the component analog out from the vhs deck to sdi which in my case can then be captured through kona. i guess canopus, black magic, and decklink make converters that do this. would i be gaining any quality this way? thanks.

You have a grasp of the issues and no, you are not really losing anything by using the DV cam as a converter. VHS was such a sucky format to begin with, the only thing that really might help is to put a TBC between the VHS source and the A/DV converter to deal with any timing/chroma issues.
The Canopus ADVC300 has a line TBC built in which does help some. It's not as effective as a frame TBC.

  • Hardware recommendations for capturing VHS / RCA composite better than Hauppauge USB?

    Hi folks,
I am trying to archive our old VHS tapes (NTSC 720x480 29.97 fps). I am using a $45 Hauppauge USB-Live-2 Video Capture. It's certainly adequate to see what's happenning in general, but it's also not as good as one would see e.g. playing these tapes on a TV. In particular, the right side of the image is missing some pixels (as though the right-most 20 or so pixels are blacked out, all up and down the right edge). Quite possibly, there are other subtler problems.
FWIW, I am doing the initial capture with AVS Video Recorder (to UYVY AVI format), then importing this (DV NTSC 720x480 29.97 fps) to PE11 and exporting to DV NTSC 720x480 29.97 fps MP4. PE11's MP4s are about 30% the size of the AVS AVIs.
Bill Hunt here recommended looking into DV Bridges (thanks, Bill!). However, I am not entirely sure what to look for. I found some Canopus devices on NewEgg, but they are $170, $200, or more. I'm not sure it's worth $200 just to save a 20-pixel edge on approximately 30 home videos. Anyway, can anyone point me toward hardware that works well with PE11 and VHS composite?
    Thanks if you can help!
    Mike

You get what you pay for.
I have been using a Canopus ADVC100 for almost 10 years, and have had 100% success right out of the box the first time I used it.  As noted above the model 55 (which wasn't available when I bought my unit) should be all you need.
Before I got the Canopus unit I tried several 'cheaper' (USB) devices but never got satisfactory repeatable reuslts.  Be sure you have at least a Firewire 400 connection.  If you need to add such a port make sure the device uses a TI chip to avoid conversion problems.  I purchased a " Syba Low Profile PCI-Express 1394b/1394a (2B1A) Card, TI Chipset, Extra Regular Bracket SD-PEX30009 " (which has both FW 400 & 800 ports) apprx $26 from Amazon.
By the way I use the Canopus to convert/capture both VHS and Hi8 analog tapes.

  • 8mm and Canopus or Digital 8 for capturing 8mm tapes?

I have a Canopus 300 that I've been using for capturing VHS tapes. I also have an 8mm camcorder. Will that camcorder + Canopus do as good a job as a Digital 8 camcorder or Digital 8 playback deck?
    Thanks!
    MikeR

Probably only a side-by-side comparison using the same test footage would provide a definitive answer as to which path produced the better result.
The data stream on a Digital8 tape is the same DV stream that is on a miniDV tape. The data is identical, it's just the physical tape that is different. You can only get 1 hour of DV onto a 2-hour Hi-8 tape, because the Digital8 camcorder runs the tape at approximately twice the speed.
My Sony DCR-TRV460 is smart enough to recognize the signal and switch between modes. I even have a few tapes which have regular analog 8mm video on part of the tape and Digital8 on a later part of the same tape. When it reaches one of these changes, the camera automatically stops and switches mode, then starts rolling again.
Not all DV is exactly identical, I have found out. There is a small discrepancy between the way Panasonic cameras record DV and the way Sony cameras record DV. I found this out when a colleague sent me a miniDV tape recorded on a Panasonic camera. I took it to a video shop to have it copied over to a Digital8 tape, which should have been a direct digital copy. But at the shop they told me Panasonic records DV in a slightly different way. The result is that there were some glitches and artifacts on the copy, and some audio problems as well. If you stick with all one manufacturer you should probably not run into that problem.
The downside is that I have found Sony camcorders to suddenly fail to operate at the worst possible moments, and for no apparent reason. This has happened to me several times, in fact my TRV460 died a couple of weeks ago. It is always wise to have an expert repairman who is knowlegeable about Sony available at all times.
I think that the Sony deck (GV-D200) might be exactly what you need for your project, but at $500 for a new one (or maybe $250-$300 for a used one on eBay) that would be a significant cost.

  • Recommended approach for validating page content on activation?

    Hi,
Is there a recommended approach to implementing validation in CQ5 (we are using 5.5) that will run when a Page is activated?  I have been reading up on different approaches for this, but have not been able to find a clear solution.
The requirement that I have is for a News article to only be published if all of it's mandatory fields have been supplied - for example Heading, Image, Body Text, Author.  Simply implementing validation on the edit dialog doesn't really solve the issue, as each component is editable separately, so it is easy for a content author to miss entering the Author for example.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to run some custom validation code when the page is replicated, and cancel the replication if the validation does not pass.  Ideally this would show a "Validation Failed" or similar notification in the CQ user interface, the same way that the "Activation Successful" notification is shown.
The approaches that I have investigated so far are:
    Replication Action Event Handler
    http://helpx.adobe.com/cq/kb/ReplicationListener.html
    - This triggers at the right time and provides sufficient information (path to page), but doesn't provide a mechanism to stop the replication.
    - Potentially this could be combined with further service calls to stop replication?
    Workflow Action Event Handler
    http://dev.day.com/docs/en/cq/current/workflows/wf-extending.html#par_title_0
    - This doesn't seem to fire when activating a page
    Custom Replication Agent
    http://dev.day.com/docs/en/cq/5-5/deploying/configuring_cq/replication.html
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4785913#4785913#4785913
    - This would provide a hook for validation, but seems like massive overkill - is there no way to simply hook into the existing replication process and cancel it if the page is not valid?
Any advice on how to best accomplish this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ray

  • Help with capturing VHS onto the FCP drive

Hello, I'm a new (novice) G-5 FCP user and I'm trying to attempt to capture video through my VHS player (from the VHS Tape) and dub it into my new Panasonic PVGS31 mini dv camera, or if possible, bypass the dubbing to mini dv and capture the video straight into the G-5 using the dv camera. I tried to connect the av adapter to the back of the VCR, but no luck...can anyone advise on what to do. I keep spending more and more money at the dubbing house putting VHS onto mini dv and that's got to stop.
    Thank you!!
    G-5 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

First off, make sure you're using the correct cable(s) to connect the VHS VCR to your camcorder and that you've connected to the correct outputs on the VCR as well as the right inputs on your camcorder. I know its a simple thing, but sometimes its easy to get the INs and OUTs crossed up.
Next, make sure your camcorder is set for the proper line input. Usually its a menu setting while in VTR mode. Now here's the important part; if your camcorder can pass through an analog signal to its digital output, you should be able to capture directly with FCP without dubbing to tape first. But be aware that not all camcorders have this capability. If yours doesn't, just go ahead and dub to DV tape first then capture the new DV tape with FCP.
Of course, you'll need to have the Firewire port of your camcorder connected to your Mac, and assuming your camcorder is compatible with FCP you should be good to go.
I tried to connect the av adapter to the back of the VCR<<</div>
What exactly is this "AV Adapter" you're referring to? Most all VCRs will have an RCA output jack for video and one (mono) or two (stereo) for audio. You connect these to your camcorder's line input jacks.

    Hi,
Thanks for posting the CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements; that really helps!
Here's one wa. Like your 2nd approach, this uses a self-join:
    WITH     got_r_num     AS
         SELECT  ca_id
         ,     ROW_NUMBER () OVER ( PARTITION BY  ca_id
                                   ,                    fac_id
                             ORDER BY        ca_ver_num
                                 )    AS r_num
         ,     brwr_short_name
         ,     TO_CHAR (sic_code)     AS sic_code
         ,     fac_id
    --     ,     ...     -- Other columns (using TO_CHAR if needed)
         FROM     r_dummy
    ,     unpivoted_data     AS
         SELECT     *
         FROM     got_r_num
         UNPIVOT     INCLUDE NULLS
              (    txt
              FOR  column_name IN ( brwr_short_name          AS 'BRWR_SHORT_NAME'
                            , sic_code               AS 'SIC_CODE'
    --                        , ...     -- Other columns
    SELECT       p.ca_id
    ,       p.fac_id
    ,       p.column_name
    ,       p.txt          AS previous_name
    ,       a.txt          AS after_modification
    FROM       unpivoted_data   p
    JOIN       unpivoted_data   a  ON  p.ca_id     = a.ca_id
                           AND p.fac_id     = a.fac_id
                         AND p.column_name     = a.column_name
                         AND p.r_num      = a.r_num - 1
                         AND p.txt || 'X' != a.txt || 'X'
    ORDER BY  a.r_num
;To include other columns, add them in the 2 places where I put the comment "Other columns".
Ca_ver_num can have any values, not just 2.00 and 3.00.
This will show cases where a value in one of the columns changed to NULL, or where NULL changed to a value.
There ought to be a way to do this without a separate sub-query like got_r_num. According to the SQL Language manual, you can put expressions in the UPIVOT ... IN list, but when I tried
    ...     UNPIVOT     INCLUDE NULLS
              (    txt
              FOR  column_name IN ( brwr_short_name          AS 'BRWR_SHORT_NAME'
                                 , TO_CHAR (sic_code)     AS 'SIC_CODE'
)I got the error "ORA_00917: missing comma" right after TO_CHAR. Perhaps someone else can show how to eliminate one of the sub-queries.

  • Best Method For Importing Clips Between FCP Projects

What is the best method for importing clips between FCP 7.0.3 projects?  I am wondering whether or not pulling the clips from the Capture Scratch folder is the way to go or will using Import from the new FCP project create a new folder in Capture Scratch with the imported clips?  I have a new HD camcorder with different clips for different projects and Log and Transfer makes it so easy to bring them all in at once but now wondering how best to separate them into separate Capture Scratch folders for each project.

well, I simply either drag them in to the new/different project from the finder, or drag or copy and paste between open fcp projects.  Never had any problems working this way.  Just remember that if you delete a specific project scratch disk folder, you may be deleting media used in another project.

  • Problems capturing VHS video - help please (Elements 11)

I've tried without success trying to capture a VHS tape into Elements 11 for two hours now and really need some guidance please.
The hardware is a Win 7 64 bit desptop and my VCR player is connected to the PC via a Canopus ADVC55 firewire connection, through an S-video and L/R audio inputs. The VHS tape is a Japanese one whihc plays fine through the VCR when it is connected directly to my TV.
The capture process I'm trying to use is "DV Camcorder" but I keep getting an error message in the capture window stating that "Camera settings do not agree with project settings" and that the capture process may not work properly.
To solve this I've tried almost all the NTSC settings in the New Project dialogue box. Sometimes the Canopus isn't recognised, sometimes it is but I get the above error message but nothing gets captured.
I would have thought the correct project setting would be NTSC/DV/Standard 48kHz but i just get the error message. When I ticked the "force these settings for the project" box I got an immediate blue screen of death!
I'm obviously doing something - or several things - that aren't right. I'd be very grateful if somebody could put me straight. All over the internet are articles saying how easy this VHS to DVD transfer is!!
    TIA. John.

Thank you very much gentlemen for your help and advice. I've had a whale of a time this afternoon trying to make some sense of the problem.
I've downloaded WinDV and updated the Firewire drivers. I've checked Device Manager and there is nothing there about dropped frames or timcodes. I've also tried every combination of the Canopus dipswitches making sure that I reboot bewteen setting changes. I've tried 2 different VHS players and also swapped out the cables. I've also found an old Miglia capture device and tried that as well in case the problem lies with the Canopus.
    The conclusions so far:-
    1. Using WinDV with the Canopus set to NTSC I get a picture straight away no problem and audio works as well. BUT the pictures are in black & white not colour.
    2. The Canopus doesn't pass the video through to WinDV with the dipswitches set to PAL - the status light stays red.
    3. So going back to elements 11 I've tried both dipswitch settings. With PAL the Canopus doesn't pass the signal through as for WinDV.
    4. With Elements 11 with the dipswitch set to NTSC and the New Project settings at PAL/HD/Standard 48kHz I get the error message about "Camera settings and Project settings being different" and my PC hangs completely.
    5. With Elements 11 with the dipswitches set to NTSC and the New Project settings at NTSC/HD/Standard 48kHz I get the message as above but if I close it then the "record" button is inactive and no video is recorded.
    6. And those results are the same for both VHS players.
    7. With The Miglia device I get no picture or sound with either WinDV or Elements 11 no matter what type of VHS tape I try to record.
And that's as far as I've got.
Are there any other Project settings I should try? Can anybody help with the Black and White issue with WinDV?
I just want to get the VHS recorded via any piece of software now!
    Thanks again.

  • Unable to Log and Capture AND make FCP a boot disk

I am unable to go into Log and Capture mode in FCP 4. I can capture from firewire using I movie just fine so I know the sytem works. The minute I open Log and Capture from within FCP (with the JVC Mini-DV camera hooked up thru Firewire), it crashes. Help. I upgraded from FCP 3 to FCP 4 a couple years ago and it hasn't worked right since. Would re-installing the FCP 4 upgrade work? Also, my system works very sluggish. Please explain to me how I would make the veersion of FCP 4 my boot disk. I realize that I can't have the FCP 4 application and the media on the same drive but is there a way to partition one of my drives and make FCP one of the startup disks? Hope this isn't too confusing. Thanks.

First off, FCP 4 was darn unstable. FCP 4.5 is a free upgrade and is STILL the most stable version out there. FCP 5 is getting there.
    Secondly, try:
Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/ and run it.
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
As for partitioning the hard drive, that isn't necessary. Hasn't been since FCP 3.

  • Capturing footage to FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVRZ1U HD Camera

I'm doing an HD project using a Sony HVRZ1U camera. I'm capturing footage from a Sony HDV GV-HD700 deck. I get nothing in the viewer when I go to log and capture and I cannot capture anything when I press capture because there is no video signal. I can see video on the viewer for the deck. When I change the settings on the deck from AV-DV out, I can see a stretched version in DV quality when I change the settings. I just cannot see a HDV signal to my computer. What are the correct settings for capturing this format? I've tried all the various possibilities and haven't been successful. The deck is connected to the computer via firewire to the HDV/DV iLink cable. Is this deck compatible with FCP? Is the video too much info for the computer?

When setting any Sony HDV device to output HDV you should disconnect the ilink/wirefire cable first, in the menu find Rec In/Out and set the ilink Conv to OFF for HDV. Then connect to the computer when both computer and deck are turned off.
If you have 6.0.1 then why not updated to the latest version, if you do update you will also need to update Quicktime.

  • Can't capture video with FCP 5.1

    Hi All,
Here is the case. I'm trying to capture the video from my newly baught Sony HDR FX7. Here are the specs:
I've connected it thru Firewire 400 on the back of my G5.
    G5 660GB HD, 5.5Gb RAM
In Easy set up I've selected HDV-1080i60
When I go to file-log and capture, it connects to camcorder and says VTR OK on the bottom of the screen.
When capturing the video (after I've connected to log and capture I push play on camcorder and then click capture now on FCP) I could see on the capture screen and my video running but here an there a green line would cross the film and then it would slow down for a 10th of a second and line would run accouss the capture window again. The type of lines you'd get in the old movie? .
After I've captured all 5 sigments I had on the tape and when I tried to play (I went to file-import-file, I've selected the captured clip from my internal HD where the FCP put the files). The file opened in browser. And then it open in preview window of FCP. At this point the clip that is 1 minute long would play for 2-4 second and end there. The quality of it was also very, very poor (and I filed it at HD 1080i.
So, the quality was really poor. It was the case with all 5 clips I've captured from FX7. All of them 2-4 sec. long and very poor quality.
Now, if I try to play the clip from camcorder and select "in" and "out" points and then batch capture via the same log and capture window, it would tell me that it's "unable to locate timecode, the timecode appears to be missing from the tape. Please verify that tape is timecoded correctly"
So, I was reading this forum and did this:
Tried to go to user preferences and set "on time code brake" select "make new clip"
    Nothing helped.
Also it's worth noting. When I push play on camcorder and click capture now, new window comes up and it says on the bottom of it "searching for meadia..." press esc to stop or something like that. May be it's not finding it?
Also, when I first filmed with this camera, I would stop after every clip, turn off the camera, plug it into tv and preview what I've filmed.
Either way, the few seconds of the clips that I"ve got are very bad quality. When I view the clips on my TV and monitore connected thru 3 colored cables, the video was ok, I'd even say good, just too much noice in it. But quality of capture is horrible.
If anyone is readying this, could you please give me some ideas where to go with this. I don't know what to do from here

    Question is answered

  • How can I use an external hard drive for capturing? I don't have enough mem

I'm new at this...I have a Powerbook G4 and not nearly enough memory for capturing a full size video. Is there some way to send it to an external hard drive- for capturing, then burn it in my laptop? Would that external hard drive have to have IDVD loaded on it?

    Hi artdrake
Just to add to the already good advice posted above.
Another possible approach which works for me, assuming the ext. FireWire HD is large and fast enough (I recommend at least 120GB and 7200rpm) is to format the the ext. HD as stated above (journaled) and then clone your existing startup volume (using Carbon Copy Cloner) to the ext. Hard Drive. This will circumvent installing a fresh OS as well as all the iLife apps to the ext. device. You will simply make an exact copy of your laptops HD to the ext. volume. It takes me all of 30-40 mins. on my G4 system to do this procedure whereas installing everything from scratch may take several hours.

Once this is completed and assuming the ext. drive is connected securely via Firewire, Restart the computer while holding down the option key. Select the ext. FW HD. Once your G4 laptop is booted to external drive, use it as you would the primary drive. The only difference is that you now have plenty of room to capture to or to burn a DVD. This saves you from consuming much needed HD space on the G4 laptop plus it also serves as a fully operative backup hard drive for your G4.
Hope this suggestion works as well for you as it does for me. Feel free to post back with additional questions/concerns.

  • My external hard drives are causing problems when i capture DV in FCP

We have external hard drives (2 different brands lacie and WD) are causing dropped frames when I capture DV in FCP. This only happens when they are connected via firewire 800. When I connect them using USB everything works great. Any ideas why this could be? We have 2 of each drive and 2 older mac pros and they both have this issue with every combination of drives I try. I've also tried reseting the ports with no luck...

Connecting your camcorder to even 1 FW drive constitutes daisy-chaining.  Even if you have two FW ports in your Mac, connecting a drive to one port and your camcorder to the other is the same as daisy-chaining as far as  your Mac is concerned.
Try capuring from your camcorder with no exernal FW drives attached.  Verify that works before trying anything else.
Also, I noticed your profile says you have a Mac Pro.  You might consider adding a FW card in order to get extra FW ports that are not on the same FW bus as the built-in FW ports.  Then you could connect your external FW drives to the card; and your camcorder to the built-in ports and it should work.

  • Using different templates for the desktop and phone versions of the same blog

I have a site which was created in Adobe Muse and is hosted on Business Catalyst.
I have created both a desktop and a phone versions of the site.
I  want to know how I can integrate the blogs that I  currently have on the desktop site with the phone version that I just did, using different templates for the desktop and phone versions of the same blog. This is in order to ensure that visitors to the blogs on the website are directed to the templates that render correctly for the devices they are using.
My current approach has been to create both a desktop and phone versions of the blogs. The problem with this however, is that the dates are different and the comments are separated between the two blog versions!
I  have also tried enabling mobile templates in BC, but still couldn't find a way to specify the mobile versions of the templates for the same blog?
To recap my problem, I basically  need a solution where the same blog uses different templates for desktop and mobile (both templates use different navigation headings and menu styles)
    Thanks.

There can be few reason for this, including page contents links or contents used in phone/tablet version.
Please provide the site url , also try to publish the site as a trial site in Business Catalyst with all layouts which would help to isolate the issue.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit
