Different artist name when browsing and playing

Question

I'd like to see the name of the artist displayed differently when I'm browsing by artist vs when I access the "Now Playing" information. For instance if I have an album by David Bowie then I would like to see the artist listed in the browse-by-artist listing as "Bowie, David" (which makes sense since I have filed him under "B" not "D") but when I play one of his albums then I would like to see it listed as "David Bowie" since, in that context, "Bowie, David" would look a bit weird.
Has anyone tried to do this? Did you manage it? I don't have an iPhone yet, only an 3 year old iPod, so I can't really experiment yet. A couple of possibilities occurred to me though, but I have no idea whether they would work:
Make use of both the Artist and AlbumArtist tags. Since I don't think that one can browse by AlbumArtist then I assume I would set the Artist tag to "Bowie, David" and AlbumArtist to "David Bowie". Clearly this will make browsing work the way I want but I have no idea what would display on the now-playing information. Is there any mileage in this idea or the reverse (AlbumArtist = "Bowie, David" and Artist = "David Bowie")?
Alternatively, since I have very little classical music in my collection, maybe I could make use of the Composer tag. I could set the Composer to "Bowie, David" and the Artist to "David Bowie" and, whenever I want to browse my collection by artist, I actually use browse-by-composer. Again this will obviously give me the browsing behaviour that I want but what will display on the now-playing info? Will it just show the Artist tag, e.g. "David Bowie", or will it show something stupid like "Bowie, David by David Bowie"?
Even if it works I would prefer to find a way to do what I want without using the Composer tag because I do have some classical music in my collection and for that it is nice to have the Composer tag available for its correct use.

Thanks. That allows you to specify a different text field to be used for the sort key when browsing by artist. If you just have the Artists tag set to "John Smith" (for example) then that artist will be sorted under "J" which might well not be what you want. This is where you would set the Artist Sort field to be "Smith, John" and when sorting this tag would override the Artist tag so the artist would now be sorted under "S".
The problem is that this doesn't solve my problem because the display name used in the browse-by-artist listing is, I think, still the original "Artist" tag so I might end up with my list of artists under "S" looking like:
Santana
John Smith
Steely Dan
Whereas what I am trying to get is
Santana
Smith, John
Steely Dan
