Different b/w index rebuild and index rebuild online
hi..guys could u plz tel me difference between index rebuild and index rebuild online
There is no difference in both the commands. Both will rebuild the index structure from the scratch.But in the first case with only Rebuild, as long as the index, its temporary segment is not prepared and merged together, index is not available for the other users for use. The Online clause makes the index available for others even while being rebuild.
Rebuilding index online has the same concept of creating them online to some extent,

Hi ,
We have a catalog that defines 2 types of products (they have too many different properties), so wanted to keep them on two different MDEX engines and serve the applications requests. Here DB catalog and front end ATG application is same for both the MDEX instances.
Is it possible to have 2 different output config XML files and index the data into 2 endeca apps using the same indexing component ProductCatalogSimpleIndexingAdmin?
Thanks
DevHi, also have had some problem some monthes ago - I created separete component ProductCatalogSimpleIndexingAdminSecond. After that one of my colleage gave me some advice:
The creating separate component like ProductCatalogSimpleIndexingAdmin for the second IOC is possible way for resolving your situation. But I afraid that this way will be required creating mane duplicates for already existed components.
In my opinion the better way is the following:
starting from AssemblerApplicationConfiguration and ApplicationConfiguration component. It contains details for connecting between ATG and Endeca. Of course you should configure different components for different Endeca Apps.
After that:
Find all components that uses AssemblerApplicationConfiguration and ApplicationConfiguration. Customize these components for using one or another *Configuration component depending on what index works. (many variants released it: the most simple global custom component with flag.)
Then customize the existed ProductCatalogSimpleIndexingAdmin. Using one or another IOC and setting the flag in global custom component when index started. You can add some methods into your custom ProductCatalogSimpleIndexingAdmin like:
Execute baseline index for both IOC (one by one)
Execute baseline for IOC 1
Execute baseline for IOC 2.
Note: you should be afraid about incremental (partial) index in this configuration. But resolving conflicts in incremental index should be done after full implementation these changes.

What's the index node and index page in DB2
Could you please explain what the index node and index page in DB2, and what's the relationship between them?
Following paragraph is copied from tadm56.
Tables contain records of data. One or more records of a table are stored in a DB2 data page. Pages are the minimum I/O unit of DB2. A DB2 data page can contain one or more records. But a record must fit in a data page.
If a record of a table does not fit in a 4096 byte (4 KB) page, the table must be defined in a tablespace that is based on a larger page size. DB2 also provides page sizes of 8192 bytes (8 KB), 16384 bytes (16 KB), and 32768 bytes (32 KB).
For improved access to data, indexes are predefined by SAP developers. Indexes can also be defined later as further need arises. An index is defined using a few columns of a table, which are accessed frequently. Index data structures allow for efficient retrieval of small quantities of data. Indexes are based on nodes, their storage is maintained within DB2 index pages. Because the pointers pointing to other index nodes are also stored in the index pages, storage of indexes is not as compact as the storage of data records.
And above this paragraph, there is a figure that shows relationship. I don't know how to paste a picture here. In the figure, it shows that table records vs data page is n:1, and index nodes vs index page is 1:1.
How to understand index nodes vs index page is 1:1? -
Index series and index class in asset accounting
Hi All,
I have read in the SAP documentation that we need to assign index series to index class. I have not found the place where index class is configured/assigned. Could you please let me know what are the configuration steps for indexing in asset accounting for calculation of replacement value and purpose of each of these steps/fields?

Creative Zen X-FI 2 rebuilding and start up problems!
I finally upgraded and got a new Zen X-FI 2 64gb player and so far it seems to be a nice player. But there are two significant problems that are making me really miss my Vision W and making me consider returning my player.
The first problem occurs when ever I sync or charge my mp3 player on my computer. Whenever I'm done charging or syncing my player and disconnect it from my computer, it takes a long time to rebuild and it rebuilds multiple times before the player finally starts up. Also, I not sure if my player is suppose to rebuild oppose to just updating the library like the way the Vision W did.
Second problem occurs when I actually shut down my player. It also takes a significantly long time to turn on to the point where I am considering of never turning my player off which is not convenient when it comes to trying to save battery power.
So please tell me if this is normal for a Zen X-FI 2 64gb player and if not, is there any way to fix these problems? By the way I have the latest firmware.
Thanks!Hi,
The player is supposed to rebuild, but not multiple times in a row, and it shouldn't take very long. I've read about others who were having the same problem, and they solved it by formatting the player. You might want to try that, but first make sure to backup all your music that's on it! You can format it from the Recovery Mode. -
Hi,
how to know if for a table we should rebuild table and index ?
Many thanks.Safi, I would be less sure than that. There were many many very long threads in database general forum about that subject. If you observed that fact once, that is not very often the case.
@OP,
Assuming the question was not about performance, but more on AppDesigner side (because of rebuild table), what I can say is :
1. Peoplesoft store all the storage definition for all the objects in its own metamodel tables
2. when you are changing field definition (column's definition) or indexes definition, the new definition is stored in the Peoplesoft metamodel tables
3. On the table/index build, AppDesigner compare the Peoplesoft metamodel definition for that particular object with in the Oracle (or what ever else database you are using) definition of that same object.
4. If the defintions reported on step 3 are different, then AppDesigner will fill a file with all the (re)build statements of the objects you are rebuilding (and different).
5. Finally, you just have to run the generated script.
Of course, you can bypass the comparison by enforcing AppDesigner the (re)build the record/index in all cases, however, it is not always (do not say never) recommanded.
Now, when you have to rebuild table (or record in AppDesigner's word) or indexes ? Basically, by the previous explanation I gave above, you could understand this is when you are changing a field/table/index definition through AppDesigner.

Gathering schema Statistics and Index rebuilding
I want to know after how much time we must gather the schema Statistics and Index rebuilding.
In our system approximately 7 logfile generates in one day
Please suggest meIndex rebuilding sounds so much Oracle 7! Indexes today generally take care of themselves quite well, throughout inserts, deletes and updates. It rebalances itself automatically when necessary, without requiring any rebuild. As for the stats, run it for sure after large data movements (i.e. deletes and inserts). Besides that, implement table monitoring for your tables, and run once in a while dbms_stats with the options parameter as GATHER STALE. That way, Oracle will automatically know which objects need their stats refreshed.

Goldengate Extracts reads slow during Table Data Archiving and Index Rebuilding Operations.
We have configured OGG on a near-DR server. The extracts are configured to work in ALO Mode.
During the day, extracts work as expected and are in sync. But during any dialy maintenance task, the extracts starts lagging, and read the same archives very slow.
This usually happens during Table Data Archiving (DELETE from prod tables, INSERT into history tables) and during Index Rebuilding on those tables.
Points to be noted:
1) The Tables on which Archiving is done and whose Indexes are rebuilt are not captured by GoldenGate Extract.
2) The extracts are configured to capture DML opeartions. Only INSERT and UPDATE operations are captured, DELETES are ignored by the extracts. Also DDL extraction is not configured.
3) There is no connection to PROD or DR Database
4) System functions normally all the time, but just during table data archiving and index rebuild it starts lagging.
Q 1. As mentioned above, even though the tables are not a part of capture, the extracts lags ? What are the possible reasons for the lag ?
Q 2. I understand that Index Rebuild is a DDL operation, then too it induces a lag into the system. how ?
Q 3. We have been trying to find a way to overcome the lag, which ideally shouldn't have arised. Is there any extract parameter or some work around for this situation ?Hi Nick.W,
The amount of redo logs generated is huge. Approximately 200-250 GB in 45-60 minutes.
I agree that the extract has to parse the extra object-id's. During the day, there is a redo switch every 2-3 minutes. The source is a 3-Node RAC. So approximately, 80-90 archives generated in an hour.
The reason to mention this was, that while reading these archives also, the extract would be parsing extra Object ID's, as we are capturing data only for 3 tables. The effect of parsing extract object id's should have been seen during the day also. The reason being archive size is same, amount of data is same, the number of records to be scanned is same.
The extract slows down and read at half the speed. If normally it would take 45-50 secs to read an archive log of normal day functioning, then it would take approx 90-100 secs to read the archives of the mentioned activities.
Regarding the 3rd point,
a. The extract is a classic extract, the archived logs are on local file system. No ASM, NO SAN/NAS.
b. We have added "TRANLOGOPTIONS BUFSIZE" parameter in our extract. We'll update as soon as we see any kind of improvements. -
How to track BIA delta index merge and rebuild
Hi Gurus,
I have set up process chains which load the BIA delta index and full index rebuild in separate process chains.
Is there any way to check if BIA is behaving as desired? I know to check RSDDSTATTREX table.
Regards,
AnilNot a reply from Guru..
But I put my thoughts in and here are few take aways for you ,which you may wish to have a look in to..
PS - BI Accelerator is quite a Virgin territory ..few documentations or persons worked with ..
You can execute some performance checks with tcode - RSRV to validate the same.
<b>BI Accelerator Performance Checks</b>
1)Size of Delta Index
If you have chosen delta mode for an index of a table, new data is not written to the main index but to the delta index. This can significantly improve performance during indexing. However, if the delta index is large, this can have a negative impact on performance when you execute queries. When the delta index reaches 10% of the main index, the system displays a warning.
The system performs a merge for the index in repair mode. The settings are retained.
2) Propose Delta Index for Indexes
It is useful to create a delta index for large indexes that are often updated with new data. New data is not written to the main index, but to the delta index. This can significantly improve the performance of indexing, since the system only performs the optimize step on the smaller set of data from the delta index. The data from the delta index is used at the runtime of the query.
The system determines proposals from the statistics data: Proposals are those indexes that received new data more than 10 times during the last 10 days. A prerequisite for these proposals is that the statistics for the InfoCube are switched on.
Data in the main index and delta index should be merged at regular intervals (see test Size of Delta Index).
In repair mode, the system sets the Has Delta Indexproperty for the proposed indexes. The delta index is created when the data is next loaded for this index.
3)Compare Size of Fact Tables with Fact Index
The system calculates the number of records in both fact tables (E and F tables) for the InfoCube and compares them with the number of records in the fact index of the BI accelerator index. If the number of records in the BI accelerator index is significantly greater than the number in the InfoCube (more than a 10% difference), you can improve query performance by rebuilding the BIA index.
The following circumstances can result in differences in the numbers of records:
○ The InfoCube was compressed after the BI accelerator index was built. Since the BI accelerator index is not compressed, it may contain more records than the InfoCube.
○ Requests were deleted from the InfoCube after the BI accelerator index was built. The requests are deleted from the BIA index in the package dimension only. The records in the fact index are therefore no longer referenced and no longer taken into account when the query is executed; however, they are not deleted.

Update Statistics and Rebuild of Indexes
Hi friends,
If I execute the Update statistics for a given table thru DB20 does it have any effect on the indexes of this table or is it necessary to rebuild the index using db02
Regards
AliilaUpdating Statistics does not rebuild index while in update states logs it will show you information regarding which indexes needs to be rebuiled which you can rebuild by brtools or executing rsanaora prg in se38.

Different query behaviour (index or no index use) between sql and pl/sql
Hi All,
I have a query inside a cursor in a procedure, let's say:
cursor c_emp (b_dept_no in number)
is
select *
from emp
where dept_no = b_dep_no;
There is an non unique index on dept_no.
In this procedure i first loop through another cursor which gets the dept_no and with this dept_no i go into a for loop for the c_emp cursor.
When i run this procedure i see that the explain plan of above query gives me a Full table Scan on EMP, eventhough there is a index on dept_no and there are 1.3 million records in the em table. When i take the above query and explain it seperately, it uses the index on dept_no.
I have rebuild/analyzed the tables and indexes, nothing seems to work. Even hints in the procedure cursor are not helping at all.
I'm using Oracle Database 10.2.0.1.0 and have never seen such behaviour before.
Anyone an idea what is going on here?
Kind regards,
DaveHoi Rob,
it's like i have three tables. The first i have to get data from for my output, then for every record of table one there are one or more records in table 2 and table 3.
I had to create a xml file and it looks like this:
<Table1 Record 1>
<Name>...</Name>
etc...
<Table2 Record 1>
</Table2 Record 1>
<Table2 Record 2>
</Table2 Record 2>
<Table3 Record 1>
</Table3 Record 1>
<Table3 Record 2>
</Table3 Record 2>
<Table1 Record 2>
etc.etc.etc.
So that's why i programmed:
for r_1 in c_table1 loop
for r_2 in c_table2(r_1.dept_no) loop
end loop;
for r_3 in c_table3(r_1.dept_no) loop
end loop;
end loop;
And when i look at the first record,
it has 2 records in table2 en 16 records in table3. So nothing huge.
For now i'm unable to trace the session. I will try to post the tkprof later.
Kind regards,
Dave -
Rebuild index vs Analyze index
Hi All,
I am realy confused about rebuilding index versus Analyzing index.
Could anyone plz help me out what is the diffrence between them.
How to Perform analyze of indexes and Rebuld of Indexes for both Oracle 9i and 10g databases.
Thanks a lotCKPT wrote:

I am realy confused about rebuilding index versus Analyzing index. tell us you are getting confused why we need to ananlyze before reubild index? if so
if index analyzed the whole statistics of index will be gathered.... then you can check what is the hieght of the index.. according to the height of the index you need to take step is index need to be really rebuild or not...
lets see furhter posts from experts if not clear..Thanks OK, so you determine the height of an index is (say) 4. What then ? If you decide to rebuild the index and the index remains at a height of 4, what now ? Was it really worth doing and do you rebuild it again as the index height is still 4 and still within your index rebuild criteria ? At what point do you decide that rebuilding the index just because it has a height of 4 is a total waste of time in this case ?
OK, so you determine the index only has a height of (say) 3, does that mean you don't rebuild the index ? But what if by rebuilding the index, the index now reduces to a height of just 1 ? Perhaps not rebuilding the index even though it has just a height of 3 and doesn't currently meet your index rebuild criteria is totally the wrong thing to do and a rebuild would result in a significantly leaner and more efficient index structure ?
So what if it's pointless rebuilding an index with a height of 4 but another index with a height of 3 is a perfect candidate to be rebuilt ?
Perhaps knowing just the height of an index leaves one totally clueless after all as to whether the index might benefit from an index rebuild ...

Rebuilding spatial indexing fail after patch 9.2.0.8.0
Hi!
I did apply patchset, and after i did try to
set NLS_LANG=American_America.CL8MSWIN1251
sqlplusw ......

As you can see, rebuilding was failed.
Before upgrade all did work fine.
If i will create table WITH_ENGLISH_NAME as SELECT from my table all working fine ;(
I DID apply all *.sql from patchset.
Any idea, gurus ?
P.S.
I did use script from metalink

I will try to explain.
If I do have table with russian letter, than creating index creation will fail, no matter name of index :(
But if I will prepare copy of my table with english name (including meta-data) - index creations is succesfull. -
How much time it take to rebuild an index for a table with 20 millions rows
Hi all,
i need to rebuild the index of a table containing 20 000 000 row (i don't know why the other people working on this didn't think of rebuilding the index regularly, because i asked and apparently it has never been done :cry: :cry:) i am not a sql developper nor a DBA so i can't mesure how long it take to rebuild the index, does any one have an idea (aproximativly of course :aie:), the other question is there any formula to use in order to calculate how often to rebuild the indexes (i can for example retieve how much rows are delated or inserted daily ...)
Thanks again

:aie: that's why i am asking because i don't know (and to be sure which solution is best)
so the table is like this (the columns) :
45 varchar2, 5 timestamp, 30 Number no LOB columns, (15 indexes : 5 unique indexes and that those indexes uses at a maximum 4 columns)15 indexes - 100,000 deletes: this could mean 1,500,000 block visits to maintain index leaf blocks as the table rows are deleted. If you're unlucky this could turn into 1,500,000 physical block read requests; if you're lucky, or the system is well engineered this could be virtually no physical I/O. The difference in time could be huge. At any rate it is likely to be 1,500,000 redo entries at 250 - 300 bytes per entry for a total of about 400MB of redo (so how large are your redo logs and how many log switches are you going to cause).
yes the tables is used by an application so (update, insert ) can take place at any time
for the deletion , there is the batch which does a mass delete on the table ( 4 or 5 time each day)
You haven't answered the question - how long does it take to do a sample batch delete.
If you can enable SQL tracing, or take a before/after snapshot of v$sesstat or v$session_event for the session as it does the delete then you can get some idea of where the time is going - for all you know it might be spending most of its time waiting for a lock to do away.

"How many leaf blocks are currently allocated to the index(es) ?" how can i answer to this question ? may be if i check the all_objects table ?
If you keep your statistics up to date then dba_indexes is a good place, cross-checked with dba_segments, and you can use the dbms_space package for more detail. I have a code sample on my blog which allows you to compare the current size of your indexes with the size they would be if rebuilt at some specific percentage: http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/index-sizing/ (It's such good code that Oracle Corp. has copied it into MOS note 989186.1)
