Different desktop in every space?

Is there any way of putting a different photo on the desktop in every space. I know Spacesuit effectively does this but by overlaying the main desktop which is not what I want. I use ScreenRecycler to give me two screens and System Preferences allows me to put a panoramic photo across the two screens, but the same desktop for each space. Spacesuit puts the same photo on each screen. Any ideas or suggestions?

I looked into Desktop curtain last night, after searching for an answer to this question. It seems to ALMOST work. I have a secondary monitor 1920 x 1600 px for my 15" MacBook Pro. For a given Space, Desktop Curtain puts up the same picture on both monitors, but on the larger monitor it covers only the pixel dimensions of the primary monitor. The Leopard Aurora peeks out in a nice band around the edges of the picture I want to fill the screen.
Apart from that, what I want is to be able to have a different picture on each monitor for each Space, and Desktop curtain has only the options Primary Screen or All Screens. It isn't the answer in its present form.

  • Different background for every Space?

Is there any utility that would let me specify a different background image for every Space?

That seems like a trivial feature, but it may be difficult to implement. The system would have to keep the other desktop images loaded in memory (one per space) so that switching would work seamlessly and immediately, without any delay. That's potentially 16 images. If the Mac had two displays, that's 32. And a Mac can have more displays...
To answer your question, I have not seen any utility to do that.
I think the idea for Spaces it that your desktop does not move or change. It's your open application windows that slide onto an off of your ONE desktop, based on how you have grouped them. Spaces is an extension of Exposé, which does the same type of thing with open windows. I like the way it works now, and I think it would be distracting and a bit jarring if the background also changed as the windows slid into place.

Does anyone know of an application which will display a different desktop picture on each space when using multiple spaces?

  • How can I move an application window to a different desktop space?

Spaces is cool, very cool and useful. I'm glad they took the hint from KDE desktop in Linux and made it work unlike the clumsy goober that M'soft tried to do. But here's the thing- in Linux you can move an application to a different desktop space. I guess that's coming in a later update- nobody thought you'd wanna move something to another space!

Unfortunately, I've run into several non-Apple programs, including Adobe Photoshop CS3 that do not show up in the Spaces grid view. If you can't see the windows in the grid you can't move the application.

  • Are different desktops available, similar to spaces?

Hi, I'd like to be able to save icons and files to a personalized desktop, then, allow others to use the same computer without viewing basically a cluttered messy desktop -- how can I give them their own desktop, or, switch between my own various desktops, easily like Spaces?
    thanks

Setting up multiple user accounts should accomplish that. You can then enable Fast User Switching and toggle between them, without having to log out or quit any apps.

  • How can I open multiple instances of the same folder and web browser in different desktops in Lion?

I've selected "none" for association but it doesn't work. In other words, I have a Dropbox folder on my desktop. I'd like to be able to open that same folder using the same shortcut on different Lion desktops. However, whenever I try to use the same shortcut on a different desktop, it switches to the one where it's already open. Same problem with web browsers; if I try to just click on a web browser to create a new window, it will take me back to the other desktop.
I didn't have this problem before I had to replace my hard drive and update everything again. I am aware of the "restart Finder" option as well as associating programs with individual desktops. All of the things in question are currently selected as "none."
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I just set Safari's option to None. That is I right clicked on the dock, selected options, and chose none. Also, in Mission Control's tab of System Preferences I clicked Off When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for that application. That let me open a new Safari window no matter what desktop I was in. But I had to do both. Just setting the desktop option to none didn't seem to do it. Finder seems to work okay with just the none option set.

  • Having problems us ng my ipod 7g Nike Fitness.  When running when I press the button between the volume buttons, I get a different action almost every time.

I am having problems using my ipod 7g with Nike Fitness.  When running when I press the button between the volume buttons, I get a different action almost every time. And usually I end up either turrning volume up very high or ending the workout. I need to be able to pause workout, and get spoken feedback regarding time, distance, and pace, that's all. I'm using a Griffin brand armband, that covers all of the buttons.  I've read the online manual.  no help.  I'm just about ready to return it and go back to my 5th gen with its smaller song capacity and no blurry.  Any help or suggestions very welcome.

    Jeff:
I have had both good and bad experiences with Acronis True Image. I got the recent copy of ATI via a Newegg.com bundle. I haven't tried it yet on any Windows 7 editing systems. ATI installs some services that I would rather not have running in the background.
What made you change from ATI to ShadowProtect Desktop Edition?
    Are you running Windows 7?
What do you see as advantages to running ShadowProtect Desktop Edition as opposed to Acronis True Image?
    Thanks

  • Whither "Show app on every Space"?

Hmm, Lion seems pretty cool so far, but it appears the option to display an app in every Space (or even to assign an app to a specific Space) is history.
    Am I missing something?
I typically have RSS feed tickers, and other dynamic information, displayed in every space on a second display so, no matter which Space I'm in, they're visible.  I've looked through the Mission Control prefs, but that option seems no longer available?

    Hi Clay,
Hmm, nope.  I didn't do anything special to enable it.  You should also be able to click-hold on the app icon while it's in the Dock.  A little menu will be displayed with an "Options" submenu.  This submenu contains the following:
    Keep in Dock
    Open at Login
    Show in Finder
    Assign To
      All Desktops
      This Desktop
      None
    Good luck!

  • Why can't I assign applications to different desktops?

Why can't I swipe with three fingers to go from application to application which are assigned to different desktops since moving from Lion to Mountain Lion?

What I did: I used trackpad preferences and changed the settings to the following:
    1) 3 finger swipe to go to previous and next page
    2) 4 finger swipe to switch spaces.
    Works like a charm now.

  • Why does the aol desktop crash every time I try to use it

Why does the aol desktop crash every time I try to use it and how can I fix the problem.

I am having exactly the same problem with my iPhone 4 (running 6.0.1 (10A523)). I have rebooted several times since this started occurring but it doesn't change the behavior. It was also reporting a "storage almost full" error quite often when I still have 1GB - 3GB of free space. As a troubleshooting exercise I removed all my music so there is now 20.1GB free. The storage warning no longer appears but the same issue still persists with reminders. Help, please!

  • App mirroring on different desktops

    Hi there,
I was just wondering if there is any way on a macbook air to prevent apps mirroring on different desktops?
    thanks

that depends if by desktops you mean monitors, or the work spaces inside of Yosemite... if you are talking about monitors you should be able to go to settings displays and uncheck the box labeled displayed mirroring.. if this is not what you are referring to then i will need a little more information before i can adequately help you...

  • Can I have Safari running on two different desktops?

I want to run two instances of Safari on two different desktops so that I can run a genealogy program with my tree on one and another person's tree on the other for comparison. When I try to launch Safari on a desktop other than the one containing my program, it immediately leaps to the one where Safari is already running. Is there a way to get round this? Am I missing something? I suppose I could launch the second instance of the program from Camino or Firefox but I'd rather use Safari if it's possible.

    Yes you can do this.
Safari should not be assigned to a space.
Make sure of this by control-clicking on the Safari dock icon and following the options arrow.
What you do next depends upon whether you have "When switching to an application...." checked or unchecked in System Preferences, Mission control.
If that his unchecked and you want a new Safari window in desktop 2, make sure Safari is in front, then ask for a new window. (Note: if Safari is already in front and you click on its dock icon it will interpret that as a request to go to another desktop with a safari window.)
Alternatively, create a new window in any desktop then drag it to the desktop of interest after invoking MC.

  • Moving windows into every space via keyboard shorcut

    Hi all
occasionally I need to see an app in every window, but not all the time. I was wondering if there was a script or a mouse click or keyboard shortcut to move and remove an app or window from every space.
I know I can do this through spaces preference, but was just wondering if there is a way to reduce the steps.
    thanks

    Hey rakem,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing an on-going issue in regards to the connectivity of your peripheral devices, in this case a USB keyboard. I completely agree that this issue sounds incredibly frustrating. I’d like to ask you a few questions to gather more information on the issue.
Is the USB keyboard in question an Apple device or third-party? If it is the latter, it may be that the USB keyboard requires specific power requirements:
Apple Computers and Displays: Powering peripherals through USB
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4049
Note: Some USB peripheral devices not manufactured by Apple may have unique power requirements. These may exceed the power allotment on an individual USB port. Those devices may require you connect them to multiple USB ports or may have external power sources that must be present for them to function.
Apple peripheral devices may request more than 500 mA (Milliamps) at 5 V (Volts) from a port to function or to allow for faster charging. Such Apple peripheral devices include:
    - Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive (when connected to supported computers)
    - Aluminum Wired Keyboard*
    - iPod
    - iPhone
    - iPad
Also, I understand that you have tested this keyboard with a different computer, however I’d really love to hear the results of a test with another wired keyboard. This will help isolate if the issue indeed lies with the keyboard itself.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • HT2478 how do you make the setting to change desktop background every time you shut down your mac

how to make setting to change desktop background every time you close your mac
because i want to make it if anybody tries to change my dekstop picture i want it to go backto set desktop picture

Don't let other people access your Mac in admin mode - they might change something a lot more important than the Desktop picture.
However you can use Automator: create an Application in it, and select 'Set the Desktop Picture' from the Library. Choose the picture you want. Save the application, then go to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items and select the Automator application you just created. This will then run at startup and set your chosen picture.
