Different display aspect ratios between Mac and PC

I am working with some NTSC DV .mov files (720x480). When I view them in OS X Lion (Quicktime 10.1), the Quicktime Movie Inspector shows the video correclty at 4:3 Aspect Ratio with the correct dimensions of 640x480 (using square pixels).
However, when I open the same video in Windows 7 using Quicktime 7.7.2, It shows the video as 720x480 (I guess it is interpreting the pixesls as square instead of 0.9091). Also, on the pc, there are black bars on the left and right margins. These don't appear on the mac.
Any ideas about why these are being interpreted differently by Quicktime on OS X and Windows?
Thanks.

I assure you that I can open the same file from an external drive with my Windows PC or my Mac and get the above results. I have over 500 of these videos, and they all behave the same way.
And I assure you that the files are not the same if the file display internals were chagned by your copy work flow.
I did discover in QT 7 that if I go to the "Presentation" tab in the "Show Movie Properties", that I can set the "Conform aperture to:" to "Clean" and it sets the movie to 640x480 and removes the black bars.
Underscan issues are separate from aspect ratio issues. They can be eliminated by masking or cropping along with the re-scaling—the latter of which I've have been pointing out would correct your 720x480 (3:2 aspect ratio) to 640x480 (4:3 aspect ratio) which was the original title subject of your topic.
I believe this is the difference.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4265
All NTSC SD DV content is encoded 720x480 matrix content whether the aspect ratio is 4:3 or 16:9. To properly trim and scale the content as described by this article, the file must contain a valid setting flagging whether the original content was recoded with a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio. This has yet to be proven to be the case of your copied file which the media info window states is now playing as a simple non-anamorphic 720x480 whereas your current example reads as a simple non-anamorphic 640x480 file. In most cases this does not matter if the source content was 4:3 aspect. However, any file with a "lost" flag setting will be treated as 4:3 aspect file whether the original content was recorded as 4:3 or 16:9 so there is a potential for problems here.

  • Aspect Ratio between FCE and LiveType

I've been working on a project in FCE 3.5 and doing titles in LiveType 2.1. I noticed that when I import into LiveType there is a thin checkered line at the bottom of the video window. When I looked at the aspect ratio setting in the Livetype "Project Properties" it was set on "CCIR 601 NTSC" which has an aspect ratio of 720x486. In my FCE project, my clips are all 720x480, which seems to explain the thin checkered line. So I went back to Livetype and changed the aspect ratio to 720x480. Sure enough, the checkered line was gone, but the mode automatically changed from "CCIR 601 NTSC" to "NTSC DV 3:2". The problem is that my clips in FCE have the "CCIR 601" pixel aspect, but not the 720x486 aspect ratio that Livetype associates with that. Eventually I'm hoping to export this to DVD.
My questions are: is this something I should worry about? Should I use the 720x486 or 720x480 aspect ratio in LiveType?
    Thanks
iMac Intel Core Duo 2   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Type cmd+zero and open the project properties in LiveType. then choose DV NTSC for the properties... you'll be good to go.

One way to to put the videos into an iDVD slideshow
and set iDVD's Slideshow preferences to always scale slides to TV Safe Area.
However, some users have reported that the audio quality using this method is lessened.  I've not noticed it but then I don't have a good ear when it comes to that sort of thing. If you add more than one video in the same slideshow do not select any transition.

  • Does LR handle a dual monitor setup with different aspect ratios (16:9 and 16:10)?

Does LR 5 handle a dual monitor setup with different aspect ratios (16:9 and 16:10)?
I'm planing to buy a 27" 16:9 monitor and use it as primary together with a 22" 16:10. Does any have any idea?
    Thanks

Moreover, the two monitors can have completely different characteristics.  As always, you really need to calibrate/profile any monitor (with a hardware tool - Spyder, Colormunki etc).  That's no more important with two monitors, but you see for sure if you don't, as two dissimilar monitors will then probably look different.

  • Multiple display between Mac and Ipad

I have an IPAD with latest IOS system and a Mac with Maverick.
Would multi display works between Mac and Ipad?
If so, where can I found manual or instruction to make it works?
    Thanks.

You'd have to use something like DisplayPad to do that. I have it set up on my system and its working great under Mavericks (it wasn't supported under Mountain Lion on my system).
    Good luck.

  • Display aspect ratio in PSE4?

While working in PSE4 editor, is there a quick way to display aspect ratio?
I know that I can display pixel size by clicking the little panel near the lower left of the image, but if they are strange numbers, I would sometimes like to know if the aspect ratio is near enough to 1.5 (or 1.3333 or whatever ratio I might be after). Can I find this out without having to do a calculation?

Do Image>Resize>Image Size (this is in PSE2, it might be different in PSE4). Enter 1 in either the Width or Height box, and the other value will be adjusted accordingly. Then click the Cancel button!!

  • Display aspect ratio in T400 with Ati

When I put a program into fullscreen mode with Ati, it stretches the program's display aspect ratio wrong. Ati should have some kind of way to change this in the Catalysts but I can't find it. In basic mode it says you need to put the manager to advanced mode to change it and then in advanced mode there just simply isn't such an option. So how can I change this. And also I can't just go to upload the drivers because god only knows which driver versions work with switchable graphics and which don't. I'm using Win7.
Well, at least it seems that I still have a good reason to tell ppl to avoid anything which has something to do wtih AMD or Ati.

Do Image>Resize>Image Size (this is in PSE2, it might be different in PSE4). Enter 1 in either the Width or Height box, and the other value will be adjusted accordingly. Then click the Cancel button!!

  • File transfer between Mac and Windows

I am running Windows on my Mac and I transfer files between mac and Windows alot using my external hard drive. I was wondering if there was an easier way to do this than having to use my external hard drive like a networking solution or something. Thanks...

i also run windows on my mac (for work). The issue i had was that when booted in osx, i could see the windows partition, and copy files FROM it to the mac side, but i could not copy files TO the windows partition.
As i understand it, this is because the apple NTFS driver (to read the windows partition) only allows read access (not read and write access). It was easily solved with MacFuse (which is an open source way to add different disk file systems to your mac, kind of like teaching it a new language), and NTFS-3G for mac osx.
    http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
scroll down a bit for the download link. The installer will put in MacFuse and NTFS-3G, so it's the only one you need.
After a reboot, i can read/write to the windows partition while booted into macosx (and it's free).
    i hope that helps.
p.s. the efi boot manager download is NOT required.

  • How to sync iBooks between Mac and iPhone? I'm on Mavericks and iOS 7

I'm on Mavericks and iOS 7, but my iBook on Mac is different from my iPhone 5.
Does anyone know how to sync iBooks between Mac and iPhone?
This issue has been puzzled me for a while, hope can find a way out here, many thanks~

    Under iTunes / File / Devices ?
But I did not see my iPhone under this section...
    Only see those 4 options:
    Sync "my iPhone"
    Transfer Purchases from "my iPhone"
    Back Up
    Restore from Backup
Could you describe a bit more precise?
    Many thanks~

Yes, you can use it for Mac computer > Mac computer or iDevice > iDevice. It's because they have different operating systems.

  • My home sharing continually fails between mac and apple tv 2.

my home sharing continually fails between mac and apple tv 2, even during watching a movie.  I go to the mac to re-turn on home sharing but it is still on.  Any tips?  I also have to turn off and back on at the mac every time i switch on my apple tv.

Sharing Stopped working again over night.
I went to Apple Support Artical TS2972
As soon as I did this Home Sharing started working
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
    Firewall Section
    5. Check Firewall Settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu > System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    Block all incoming connections
    Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
It made sense to me, but its still puzzling me after restarting a router would (in my first attempt) resolve the issue for a day.  This this time I applied the port forwarding TCP and UDP ports and saved the settings in the DLink DIR-655 and both my iPad2 and iPhone 3GS were now again finding the share. My ATV2 is also now accepting the Share.
Tommorrow will be the true test.

  • Is there a way to stop the text shifting between mac and pc?

I can't believe there is still no fix to the vertical text shift issue when transferring fla's between Mac and PC's. Create an fla on a Mac put some text in it, save the file and open it on a PC and see how the text has dropped.
Adobe please tell me I'm missing something here or at least acknowledge the problem and explain the cause.
This problem has plagued flash for as long as I can remember. None of the other applications (Photoshop, Illustrator etc) have this problem. It wastes huge amounts of time and causes massive quality control issues especially when outsourcing work.
We're using CS3 now and the problem is as bad as ever. It happens with all text fields and all font types.
    Please help.

Don't get your hopes up that anyone from Adobe will see your posting.  These are user to user forums and appearances by anyone from Adobe are rare.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/
