Different DVI?

I just exchanged my mac mini which i purchased 2 weeks ago for the newer one. I spent the extra 50 bucks. I was wondering if anyone else had the problem of a different DVI? Meaning, I put in the mini-dvi to dvi adapter. Then I tried to put on my dvi to vga adapter that I had from before. It does not fit. My dvi to vga adapter that came from my macbook pro also does not fit. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. Is it really a dvi or an apple version of DVI?

My mini won't arrive until later today, but my guess is that the supplied adapter is DVI-D, which doesn't pass through an analog signal, thus is made to not fit analog adapters. Specifically, the DVI to VGA adapter you have is DVI-I, which stands for "integrated," as in digital + analog. You can't mix and match DVI-I with DVI-D. The pin outs are slightly different. If that is the case you will need to buy a mini-DVI to VGA adapter.

  • Possible to move boot display to different DVI port? (GTX780)

I doubt this is possible, but just in case : is it possible to force boot screens to a different port on the video card?
The MSI GTX780 has two DVI ports - one DVI-I (which includes analog display) and DVI-D (which does not). The DVI-I port displays the boot screen, BIOS, and anything that shows before Windows is fully loaded.
I currently have two monitors. My primary monitor can connect via DVI, and since it is a 120HZ monitor, it currently uses a dual link cable. The secondary monitor is older and cannot connect via DVI, so I use a DVI-I-to-VGA adapter and a standard VGA cable for that display. Unfortunately, this means that the secondary monitor shows boot/BIOS/etc.
Is it possible to move the boot display to the DVI-D port on the card?
Please note that this is not a big issue - having the secondary monitor show boot info is a minor annoyance at worst. The secondary monitor also has HDMI-in, so I can buy a cable and use that, and then move the primary monitor to the DVI-I port. I do want to avoid spending more money, but mostly, I want to see if it is possible to force the boot screens to another port. This seems like it might be a very interesting way to learn about the video card (and VBIOS, if changing that is necessary to do this).
    Thank you.

In the "Arrangement" pane of "Displays" System Preference, drag the picture of the menu bar to the picture of the other display.

  • DVI to VGA adapter too bulky

the DVI-to-VGA adapter that came with my mini is too big in that it increases the footprint of the mini by more than an add'l inch (won't fit on shelf as a result). ..Is there a way to avoid this? Can you buy a VGA monitor cable that simply terminates with a DVI connector?
Thanks for reading and - hopefully - replying.

There are actually several different DVI/VGA adapters, not just the bulky one that Apple supplies. I have one, bought from Radio Shack a couple of years ago which is no bigger than a DVI connector on the back of the mini, but has a 6" lead, terminating in a VGA 'female', thus is still a suitable adaptor for the purpose.
In the event you can't find a suitable one in the electronics stores or the usual places on line, http://sewelldirect.com/dvi-i-to-vga-360-degree-rotating-adapter.asp might be a suitable option.

  • DVI port not functioning on G4 MDD

Hello, I just bought a 23" Apple Cinema Display and the Graphic Card on my G4 MDD 1.42 doesn't see it. The display stays black (doesn't come on). However the Firewire and USB ports work on the display.
The graphic Card is the original (I think) ATI Radeon 9000 pro. It has 64 MB of RAM. That should be enough and is said to support this display.
It seems to me that the DVI signal is not working. I say that because, with both a VGA to DVI and a VGA to ADC adapter, I can plug 2 CRT monitors and they all work fine.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to solve this? Should I buy another card?
How do I know for sure that the card is not working. So far I tried it with 3 different DVI monitors and none worked. The display I bought is fine. I tried it on a mac mini.

There have been many reports of new 23" displays with bad power supplies. Is there a another computer you could try the display on? the adapters shouldn't be a problem,

  • Connecting MacBook to Sony Bravia via DVI-HDMI!

Hi I am having major issues with my Macbook connecting to my Sony Bravia KDL-32V4000 I now have 2 different DVI-HDMI leads as well as the Apple Mini-DVI-DVI and still have absolutely no luck.
The Macbook is picking up the Television absolutely no bother at all but there is just nothing at all coming up on the Television its self it doesn't even recognise that I have the computer in the HDMI slot nothing at all just blank!
Any help would be greatly appreciated as it will save me buying more and more cables if this fails to work will have to go with the DVI-VGA I guess would rather fix this though!
    Thanks!

I bought a mini-DVI to HDMI and an HDMI to HDMI cable. Once I went into settings for the display, I found that the TV was acting as a second monitor and that it was off to the right of the macbooks own screen. Thus if i moved the mouse to the right it could control the second monitor. You are able to move the screens so that they have the same data on each or use them as two screen with different info on each. Each screen is clearly visible in Spaces and it works a treat.
It is also possible to use the TV as the only screen. The way to do this is to connect up and close the lid on the mac. Once the light on the front starts blinking you can wake it up by using your mighty mouse or external keyboard. once awake, assuming you have chosen the correct HDMI connection from the TV the TV will act as the only monitor at full resolution.
The problem I have, is that I have not been able to get the sound to work. I have used the earphone socket and connected that to external speakers as I cannot seem to get the analogue signal on the TV on anything but an AV channel (not an HDMI channel). Thus the sound works on one channel and the image on another. My TV is a Sony KDL40w5710 - thus if anyone know the solution to getting the sound running through an HDMI channel on my TV it would be appreciated if you could contribute.
    Cheers

  • Mini displayport to DVI adapter inadequate

Naively I thought that all DVI adapters were create equal and until I found otherwise I assumed that Apple's adapter would just work. The problem is that I just wanted a DVI adapter that would work with any DVI device out there, little did I know that there are at least two different DVI plugs, and our office has a nice mix of both of them.
There's the DVI-D plug that Apple's adapter supports, and there's the DVI-I plug that the older macbook pro's (and a fair number of office devices are set up to use). The problem is that DVI-I uses four extra pins and a DVI-I cable won't fit in a DVI-D socket (though the reverse works fine).
What's up? Why would they do this? I've yet to find a solution. It's bad enough having to carry around lots of extra adapters just to connect my macbook to various displays, but for the fairly expensive adapter to fail to work (and do so with no mention of this limitation on the packaging) is beyond frustrating.
For a company that sells it's goods as stuff that "just works", it's quite the eye opener to see all of the way in which they don't.

At least you are only out $6 + shipping to figure it out. If that's the case, then great, you can let us know that it does work, and others can have it too.
As for the necessity, it is only necessary if you chose to buy an Aluminum MacBook, or a more recent MacBook Pro. MacBook White is available NEW with built-in mini-DVI. While it doesn't have gesture sensitive trackpad and the maximum GPU in a MacBook, it is not much worse than the Aluminum MacBook in terms of the GPU speed since both still have shared GPU main memory. Furthermore, Aluminum if exposed to too much water can pit just as easily as plastic can if exposed to too much dirt. The only real reason to get the Aluminum is the slight improvement in processing power. You can always sell your Aluminum and downgrade to the MacBook White unless the Aluminum's power is essential for your work.

  • Macbook mini DVI to DVI output problems

    hi
I've been using a samsung syncmaster 22" with my macbook for about a year now with no problems using the mini DVI to DVI connection
then earlier this week i used a different DVI cable to plug my playstation 3 into the screen, when i plugged the computer DVI cable back into the screen lots of red/pink pixels have taken over the screen and when the desk is nudged red lines flash up
i thought it might be either the DVI cable or the mini DVI to DVI adapter and replaced both to no avail, i have also tested all the cables on other screens/with other computers, and tested the screen with my playstation. Screen and cables all work fine so i think it must be some kind of output problem, but cant work out what it could be seeing as nothing would have happened to the port on the actual computer whilst changing connections on the samsung screen
sorry for the long winded post, really wanna know what the problem is here

    Hi cbeth,
    welcome to macbook forum.
For your friend macbook, try to press F7 back and forth to switch between mirror and expanded mode.
Try to update your macbook hardware firmware and software using software updater and repair permission after that...application/utilities/disk utility/repair permission.
Also reset your PRAM and PMU.
Open your friend system preference / display and try to compare and set yours similar to hers, including resolution, color depth, refresh rate.
    Good Luck.

  • Some dvi questions for those who really know there stuff!

Hi all, haven't lurked these forums in a few weeks but just had a quick question for those who wanna build up some "points". I'm trying to connect my MBP 15" (1.83ghz) to my Dell LCD 26" T.V. via DVI. Anyhoo, the DVI port on an MBP is a DVI-I (Dual link 24 + 5 pin) fenmale port while my Dell LCD sports a DVI-D (Dual link 24 + 1 pin) female port. Anyhoo, I went to my local Circuit City store and picked up a 6.6ft DVI-D (Single link 18 + 1 pin) male cable to hook both devices up. Should this work? If those have no idea what I'm talking about, I've included a link with a picture of allt he different DVI ports:
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/59/Dvitypes.png/180px-Dvitypes.png
If I haven't explained myself well, please post and I'll do my best to clarify.

Am I missing something? Do you actually have a problem making this work? If the plugs you chose are mechanically compatible (and both are DVI D, dual-link), then there should not be a problem.
Ah. I see the concern. The extra four pins. I believe they make the connector able to supply hybrid DVI-A and DVI-D. The Mac output is hybrid so it can easily be adapted drive a VGA monitor, too.
I think you should be fine.
I have a ViewSonic 1600x1200 LCD monitor with a DVI (single) and it works superbly with the Mac.

  • ATI 4870 DVI-VGA not working.  Help?

    Howdy folks,
I was using an ATI 4870 with two DVI ports and one S-Video port on a Mac Pro 3,1 (I think) running osx 10.5 with two monitors
When we retired that computer I harvested the 4870 card to replace a GT 120  on a Mac Pro 4,1 running osx 10.8.  It has been feeding two monitors without issue, one DVI and the other DVI-HDMI.
However, I cannot seem to get it to recognize any VGA monitor or projector using any of three different connectors.  Nor can I seem to get any signal out of the S-Video port.
My goal is to run a VGA projector with the Mac Pro 4,1, a projector with VGA, S-Video, and RCA inputs.
As I said, I have tried three different DVI to VGA connectors.  Two of these are very similar with 29 pins on the DVI connector.  These did absolutely nothing.  The third has only 17 pins, and while it had no result with projector, when connected to a VGA monitor the computer would recognize that a second monitor was attached, but no signal seemed to be carried to that monitor.  The osx settings showed options for two monitors, but no image appeared on that second monitor.
One of the two DVI to VGA connectors I had successfully used on the previous Mac Pro 3,1 computer, but I cannot remember if it was with the 4870 or the graphics card we used before upgrading.
A Macbook using a MiniDVI to VGA connector feeds a signal to the projector without issue.
If this community can offer any help or guidance, I would be very grateful.
    Best wishes-

The signals used for VGA are generated directly by the DVIO-I port on the graphics card, and are supplied in the bar at the right end, the four pins around it, and one pin from the top row of the grid (salmon/pink in the diagram above). A VGA adapter has no active components in it -- it just picks up those five signals and presents them on the proper VGA pins. The bar is used as the common return.
A failure is to produce a signal is not likely to be a failure in the adapter, but a failure on the graphics card.
DVI-I (Digital AND Analog) has the bar and the four pins around it present.
DVI-D (Digital only) has no bar, and the pins around it are not populated.

  • VGA to DVI question

I have a LCD monitor that only has a DVI-D port in it, I want to connect my Xbox 360 to it. I bought the VGA AV cable from Microsoft, but I don't know what adapter I need in order to hook up my Xbox in it, since there are so many different DVI's I don't understand. What kind of adapter will I need? if any. Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

  • DVI Out Flicker and connection issues- Macbook Pro 2006

No matter which monitors/cable combination I use, my external display flickers at random times. Sometimes, the signal will come back a second or two later, other times it will go out until a reboot.
From my unofficial "tests", this happens more (but not always, and never consistently) when...

    * When I have an expresscard in the slot
    Hardware Notes:
    * 1st gen Macbook Pro 2.0ghz (ati 256mb)
    * 10.6.3 - I don't know if this started happening on a particular release. I think it still happened in 10.5

  • Buzz In Audio When Using DVI Output

I've had this problem for a while now, but everytime I plug in a monitor to the DVI port I get a horrible buzz out of my audio interface. I've tried everything: using different DVI cables and audio cables, using different audio interfaces, disconnecting everything except the necessary things, etc. and no matter what, the buzz comes when I plug something into the DVI port. I'm assuming that this has to do with the video card, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had problems like this.

Are the TV and the Mac plugged into different wall outlets in the room? It could be they are on widely different circuits, considering the wiring behind the wall, and that stray currents are flowing through the signal cables and upsetting the signals carried on those cables.
If the above is true, try plugging the TV into the same outlet as the Mac and see if things improve.

  • 05' Mac G5 - DVI/HDMI

I have 05' G5 Mac (2.7). Trying to connect it via DVI/HDMI adapter to LCD TV (2013). I've tried three different adapters. No luck. DVI ports work with my 20'' ACER LCD Monitor (2008). I'd appreciate any help.

Could the TV really make a difference?
I ask this because I've tried three different DVI/HDMI Adapters. The first one was a cheap noname brand bought from Amazon.ca, while the other two were from Best Buy. However, I should mention that one of the adapters stated HDMI to DVI on the package; not sure if this an issue or not.
I did try all three adapters on two seperate TV in the house; RCA & Philps.
I truely cannont understand why I'm having such an issue with this connection.

  • Extra DVI adapter with Mac Pro?

    Hello-
I recently received a Mac Pro and it included two adapters - one was the DVI to VGA and the other looks like a DVI to DVI adapter or extension. I use a monitor with a VGA connection so I'm not familiar at all with the different DVI connections and/or adapters. My question is, does anyone know what this adapter is for? It's not listed in my Mac pro manual and it's not on the "what's in the box" list when you view the Mac Pro specs on the site. My Mac Pro has the stock graphics card. Thanks in advance.
    Mac Pro 2.0ghz / iBook G3 800mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Some DVI plugs are so wide that they will not fit side by side in the two DVI ports on the graphics board. The short DVI extension cord has a narrow plug that will fit beside a wide plug. The DVI extension may just carry the digital video signals, so may not work with the DVI to VGA adapter, but you can buy very narrow DVI to VGA adapters, so should not need to use the DVI extension with them.

  • DVI corruption on new card (NX6200AX-TD128)

It's been a while since I've had to post here with an MSI problem - so hopefully this will be short and sweet:
When I use the DVI out on my new 6200 card the display is garbled.
I've updated my mobo bios, my vga bios, tried several nvidia drivers, reseated the card... still I get garbage with DVI. No problems at all with analog.
My monitors native res is 1280 x 1024, which looks terrible using DVI (see pic below) - but even at lower resolutions I still get garbage and messed up colours.
Any ideas what's going on here? Time to try a different dvi cable? (Although the one I'm using now is brand new).
    XP Pro SP2
    DVI-D cable (2 meters)
    Philips 190B lcd monitor
    MSI NX6200AX-TD128
    MSI KT6 Delta LSR
    Athlon 2500
    SBLive/M-Audio Delta 66

Yeah I've tried all sorts of resolutions etc.
The few days to return the card was if I wanted the retailer to deal with the MSI supplier on my behalf - otherwise I'd have to do it myself.
But I think I've found the problem anyway - I'm pretty sure it's the cable after reading this: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/406134.html
I'm using the same brand of cable ("Anyware") that they're talking about.
I've ordered a new cable and have crossed my fingers.
