Different Library's

Is it possible/sensible to keep different clients images on separate drives with a separate library for each?
If I have to review with a client, I do not want them to be able to see other clients work.
I was thinking of a small drive for each client with it's own library on it, totally self contained.
Or Is it possible/better to keep the images separate on one drive?
Trying to sort out a sensible work flow to deal with multiple clients who are likely to want to see their images.
Many thanks

It is (imho) almost always better to use one Library per photographer, and to make each of those Libraries as inclusive as possible.
Here is only one of the many problems with multiple Libraries:  there is no way to query across Libraries.  If you want to, say, cull a group of Images for a portfolio (or some publicity) and your Images are in Libraries set up as one per client, you will have to open every Library, export as a Library every Image you want to consider, and then merge all the exported Libraries.  This is inefficient to the point of silly.  With one Library you can use a keyword "PublicityShot", tag your work as you go, and then just click on your "PublicityShot" Smart Album when you need some of those Images.
Aperture is a workflow tool.  That flow ends in a pool of Images that you have organized and made as best as each can be for whatever use you have for it.  It does not excel as an Image hosting tool.  Unless you want to show your clients the tributaries, the muddy pools, desiccated projects, etc., you should use another program to showcase and review your work.
Without knowing more of your needs and your business, it's hard to make useful recommendations.  I would, however, aim to use Aperture strictly "in house" and to export Images to a hosting/viewing program or site for client presentation and review.  All of the photography websites offer this (ZenFolio, SmugMug, etc.; look for "private galleries").  I use (and recommend, as long as the cost is worth it to you) aPhotoFolio.  Among much to recommend it (including private galleries), it comes with a free iPad display app which I use to showcase subsets of my work.  (You can even set up your iPad in kiosk mode.  I don't.)

  • ITunes library issue - different library on my iPhone

I have an iPhone 3GS with the latest iOS on it, and I had recently restored it from a backup on my computer.  It had crashed during
an iOS update, so I did a restore and then did the update again, and everything worked.  I had even worked on my library and had
synced it with my phone. Now, after an iTunes update, it doesn't sync and when I tell it to, it says that it is synced with a different
library and do i want to erase the phones library and sync with the one on the computer.
What happened?  The library on the phone and the computer are the same.  So now why does iTunes think they are different?
How do i resolve this without messing up either the computer or the phone?  Is there a way to transfer everything on the phone to
the computer and have it correct the library on the computer so that it matches?  This really has me baffled...
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have tried the library file rename and copy/paste suggestion from other threads, and it didn't work.

  • ITunes tells me my iPad is synced to a different library. It's not.

We bought a new iPad Air and immediately synced it to our iTunes library, hand choosing 3000 songs. I went back later to add some books, and iTunes tells me that the device is synced to a different library (it's not, same library) and that to sync books I have to erase all data and start over to make it compatible with this library. It's not a crisis, and I can do it, but to go back and choose the music all over again is time consuming. And I have no idea why it is not recognizing this device as being synced to this iTunes.
Possible relevant info: We have two users and two iTunes, but only use one for syncing devices. On my other side I have another Apple ID for iCloud, but have not used it for this iPad. We have several devices synced to this iTunes (2 ipads, ipod, iPhone). All updates are in place.
Any ideas why this happened and if there is a fix other than erasing all data?
    Thanks!

I have a similar problem - transferred from an older iPad to a newer one.
Once over the hurdle of the backup being encrypted with a password that was never set, the new iPad thinks it is synced with a library on another computer that will not be up to date (it was an old backup made on the original device).
    Some of the backup information has not fully restored the new iPad to the same state as the old one - if I connect and sync to the computer with the older library, will this;
    a) erase any data - i.e. should I not automatically sync?
    b) will it recover the missing data - or is it 'lost'?
    c) will it always require synching to this library - I intend for the device to be synched with another PC because it is faster and more convenient - this is the one where the backup and restore has been carried out rather than waiting for an iCloud sync.
The old iPad has already been reset - will this process have to be completed from scratch again? i.e. is there a way of divorcing the old iPad from it's old library then backing up and getting a full transfer.

  • My ipod is synced to a library i can no longer access, will i lose the songs on my ipod if i sync it to a different library?

my ipod is synced to a library i can no longer access( computer died )... can i sync it to a different library and not lose the songs currently on the ipod?

Im having the same problem. I just got the itouch 4g this past sunday and everything was working great. Yesterday and today the camera went black out of nowhere and its black right now. After i turned it on and off it went back on but its doing it again. So i assume its just an iOS 5 bug thats doing this. But is there any talk about fixing this?

  • My computer crashed and was rebuilt. I tried to sync the music from ipad back to my computer but I keep getting a message that says the content on my ipad will be erased. It also says the ipad was synced to a different library.

My computer crashed and was rebuilt. I tried to sync the music from my ipad to my computer but get a message that says the content on my ipad will be erased and is synced to a different library. All the music purchased from itunes synced but I need to get the music that was not purchased on itunes. How do I do this?

You don't.  the ipad is not a backup/storage device.  it simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.  The sync is one way - computer to ipad.  The only exception is itunes purchases.
Did you fail to maintain a backup copy of your computer?
    If so, not good.
You may be able to purchase  a third party program, not supported by Apple, to get the other music.

as long as you do not have copies of your music (i.e. on an external HDD) or iTunes Match I fear the answer is: you won't.

  • Trying to sync iPad saying already synced to different library on computer

    trying to sync ipad
saying it already synced to different library on my computer
    how ??
what do i do??? to change libraries

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
I am an Hardcore fan of Apple productios for their leadership in innovation.
I was using iTouch previously which doesnt use to behave in this way.
Having a single all the time with the user is very difficult and not parcticale. I am very much suprised if it was really designed in that way.
I used several smartphones and none of the smartphone has this kind of problems.
I am not sure if I had put the question correctly so for your reference, I am inserting an image. Please refer to it.

  • Steps to move several projects from a library on my computer to a different library on my same computer ( in Aperture prog .)

I have resqued all my photos from my back up, and I was making one single library but I decided to make a different library for " my trips' .. How can i transfer project from my 'New library" to my 'trips library' there are many projects and i whant to do it as fast as I can ,,I have been recuperating photos for the past 2 months and I'm getting desperated .. Thanks { I'm working on Aperture 3 and an Imac with maveriks].

Select Images or containers and "File  ▹ Export ▹ Export ... as Library".
Then close the Library, open the other one, and run "File ▹ Import ▹ Library ... ".
Confirm that everything has gone as you want, make back-ups, and then delete the exported Images or containers from the originating Library.
This is covered in the User Manual here.  Scroll down to:

  • Is it possible to have 2 different library 1 for ipod and 1 for iphone ?

    Hi,
I was wondering if it's possible to have 2 different library in itunes 1 for a ipod and 1 for a iphone.
I'm using the same computer as my boyfriend to sync my iphone and his ipod and we absolutly don't listen to the same music so if i could have 1 library for my iphone and 1 for his ipod it would be best of bot world when we sync our iphone/ipod.

Yes. Launch iTunes with the Shift key held down as needed, or use separate user accounts on the computer.

  • Sync from different library other than mine.

Hello. I have an iPhone 4S and is it possible to sync music onto my phone from a different library other than mine without the possibility of wiping out my own library? I noticed this when I hooked my iPhone up to my boyfriend's computer, and when I tired to drag a song onto my device, it would not allow it. When I clicked the box "manually manage music" then it gives me the option to replace his library with mine. Is there any way around this? Thanks.

No, by design the iPhone is meant to sync with a single iTunes library.  If you attempt to sync with another one it will wipe the media off your phone and replace it with the other library.  Don't attempt this or you will have major problems trying to recover.

  • "iPod classic synched with a different library" error

I get an error saying that my iPod is synched to another library - but I can't get that library to display the contents!! When I open my iTunes, the library is empty and I get the error message. How do I get the original library back (i.e. to display) instead of the current (empty) one?? I have over 42GB of music!!
    Anyone???

    Sorry about the delay, chris.
no actually, just replace the "owner's iPod" name in the error message with the name of the shuffle...etc. but the rest of the message is the same.
Thank you kindly. That rules out a possible complication/ramification of a Windows drive letter confusion (that can cause the name of a different ipod to appear when an ipod is plugged in).
Backtracking to something from your initial post:
that was the library that existed each time I pulled up iTunes... now, no library of songs is listed, and none of my playlists are on the computer, unless I have my iPod connected to it.
What I'm wondering here is if someone has accidentally created a second library on the PC in your user account, as per:
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
If you have multiples libraries in the same user account, unless you actively choose to open a different library during the start-up process, by default the last library that was open in iTunes is the one that will open when you next launch iTunes. So if a new blank library was created, and that blank library screen was open when iTunes was closed, that blank library would keep coming up each time iTunes was launched in the ordinary fashion. (And your ipods would say that they were synced to a different library if you connected them while the new blank library was open.)
So, next time you open iTunes, try choosing a library (as per the document I linked to earlier) and see if you can find your previous library. If the original library was in the default location, the following document may help with locating its .itl file:
What are the iTunes Library files?
Can you find another library file, with your music in it?

  • I have an Iphone OS 4.3.3 and need to update with a different library than the original.

I have an Iphone OS 4.3.3 and need to update. I have not done so since the first Itunes library used to setup my phone was done on a friend's computer and is not longer available for me. Loading to a different library requires me to erase the contents before updating. I have already come to terms with the disappointing reality of losing my media, however, will my text message history, phone contacts/numbers, notes saved in the basic built-in notes app or ANYTHING else be effected or wiped during this process? Does the backup function secure this data even though I'm using a different Library?
Hoping there's anyone with a promising answer to this concern.
    Thanks in advance,
    MS

App content will not be lost as long as you back up the phone to the computer you plan to restore it from. See this for advice on how to deal with your situation: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

  • After update says synched to different library

After I ypdate to the latest version of iTunes and plug in my iPhone, it says I'm sysched to a different library and wants to erase my phone and synch to this one. I've only EVER sysched this phone with this PC. It also thinks I'm have not authorized this computer with the store.
What is going on? How can I correct this without wiping out my phone (can't take that chance).
    Thank you.

I suspect you have a automatically rebuilt library file however, or you would be unlikely to get that message. You could try swapping the library files around to see if it helps. If not you can always switch them back again. There is also the user tip at the end about recovering the entire library from the device. This is designed to backup all your apps, data and other content, then get your device syncing to the "new" library without any loss of data.
You can fix the authorization issue by signing in to the store.

  • I-Pod synced to different library

Had my laptop stolen in October; haven't been able to sync new music from my new laptop to my Nano, because the Nano is connected to the old library. Only way I can sync is if everything currently on my Nano is removed but then I'd have to rebuild my library.
I there a way to download and store i-Pod contents to a file on my computer and then transfer it to my new library?

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
