Different movie file sizes - different videos??

I downloaded the Flex 4 In a Week videos for offline viewing a few months ago.
Today I noticed that, in conjunction with an overhaul of the Flex In A Week web page, the movie files posted therein have changed in size.  They are several megs smaller than the corresponding videos I downloaded a few months ago.  Have the videos changed, or have they only been compressed more for faster download?
Thanks

Hi Gusetva,
All of the content for the videos are the same.  Looks like they just compressed the files.

  • Photo Both video (.mov) file size in Lion

Photo Both in Lion saves videos (.mov) with double the file size of previous versions.  I have verified by looking at a 30 second video created pre-Lion (2.1mb) and a new 30 second video created post-Lion (4.1mb) on the same MacBook Air.  I have seen even more drastic file size increses on a newer MacBook Pro; more that 20mb for a video that used to be under 2mb.
There are no settings available in Photo Booth.  And as stated in other threads there is no method in Mail to resize a video, this option is only available for images.  The only functioning workaroud is to open the .mov file in Quicktime and then export for the web.  This is OK, but the beauty of Photobooth and the Mail button within was the ability to just quickly fire off a video.  Opening another app, exporting and then attaching to an email is no longer simple or beautiful.
Does anyone know why the filesizes have jumped up so drastically?  More importantly, does anyone know how to get the file size of videos created in Photo Booth back under control so they can be emailed more easily?

UPDATE:  Using any of the effects in photo booth videos greatly reduces the file size.  This seems a bit contrary to what I would expect.  Adding birds flying around my head cuts the video size in half.  Sepia cuts down to 1/3.  Black and white, the one that isnt a suprise, is less that 1/4 the file size of just plain old color.
Why can't I just have the nice small video files that Photo Booth used to save??

Thanks for all your help and thorough answers. After trying several things
without success, I ultimately just rebooted the system and...bingo...the
problem went away. It was such an unusual problem that it just didn't occur
to me that it would be that simple. Sometimes it isn't. I appreciate your
working to help me deal with this.

  • Reducing Movie File Size

I have a 8 minute video shot in HD that when I export, it comes out to about 1.5 gb (not exact because I'm in the process of exporting it again and I can't get details at this moment). I need to imbed this onto a Keynote presentation for a graduation ceremony and I was wondering if anybody out there could give me a suggestion on what compression would be best to export this to. I'm asking because I usually play around with each compression format to get a good image/manageable file size, but, I'm short on time and don't have a lot of time to try different formats. Sadly, I don't remember what worked in the past. I think I used to export the full .mov file and then convert it using quicktime or something.
I'm hoping that I can get something small in size but in good quality to play on a large auditorium screen. The projector isn't as nice as a movie projector so I can sacrifice some quality but preferably not a lot.

Found a good solution, for those of you that are interested. After exporting to .mov, I just used quicktime to save as a HD 720p movie. Went from 1.9gb to about 310mb. Perfect for the ceremony and great size too.

  • .mov file has no video - playing it in Quick Time 7 on Windows XP. Help!

I work for a law firm and we received a CD which contains a .mov file. When we try to play it in Quick Time, it plays the audio, but NO video. We are trying to play it is Quick Time (version 7.7.1) on a Windows XP Pro PC. When Quick Time first opened, it gave a message saying "Additional software is required for QuickTime to playback this media. It may be available from the Quick Time Components page." I clicked Continue and it took me to the Components page, but it lists like 10 different components and I have no idea what we need. Can anyone provide any input as to what might be missing? Is it a CODEC? I have tried converting it to a different format usinig two different softwares and have gotten errors.

Sorry, this is a work issue and I just got in from the weekend. Here is what I have:

  • MOV files in computer video folder don't DL to My Library in iTunes

I have several MOV files on my computer in the video folder which I would like to DL to my library in iTunes and then burn DVDs. I have tried "add file". The title appears, but the time is 00. There is no download. I have Quicktime Pro. Does anybody have a solution? I have spent hours on this but have not been successful.

    - Do you have Restrictions set that would prevent the syncing? Settings>General>Restrictions
    - Do they play in iTunes?
    - Is the format or source different that the one that do sync?

  • Quicktime Mov File size reduce after Data Recovery

Following a Data Recovery from Apple Care, most of my video files have been reduced to 120x90 pixels making them unwatchable. The Format is Apple Photo-JPEG, 120x90, Millions 16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48000 kHz with a Data Size of 15.16 MB. Other QT mov files bring up the following message "The movie could not be opened" "A necessary data reference could not be resolved"
Is there any way I can get the Dimensions back to 640x480 and can the necessary data reference be resolved.
My Quicktime Player is Version 7.6.4 (518.35)

Is there any way I can get the Dimensions back to 640x480 and can the necessary data reference be resolved.
Assuming the original data is in tact, the normal work flow would be to either reset/resize the movie's "Current Size" setting and re-save the file store the new setting using QT Pro or use QT Pro, an alternative QT application, or a third-part application to re-compress the file to the proper dimensions but this approach, depending on settings, can degrade the video. As to the missing "references," depending on the required "references," it might be possible to re-link/restore things if you know enough about the file structure (which I don't).

  • Quartz Composer maximum file size for videos?

I'm using the Movie Importer patch and large videos refuse to play. I had no trouble with a 16-minute, 249.6 MB file, but a 7-hour, 534.6 MB file doesn't work. The patch acts like I don't have a file selected at all: it doesn't output an image or a duration value like it's supposed to. I have tried a variety of formats (.mp4, .m4v, .avi) and a variety of frame rates and resolutions. All of my test videos played fine in Quicktime Player (I use Perian, which may explain .avi compatibility... I don't think that's supported natively).
I can't find anything in the docs about file size or duration limits. What am I missing?
    Thanks for the help!

That is a pretty small file for being 7 hours long.
Have you tried using interpolation and converting the hours, seconds and frames into all seconds or does that defeat the object of the composition? I have a bunch of movies taken with the same camera and some do not provide a timecode. Has been an issue for me for a while. In X.6.+ even apple created comps cause the finder and QC to crash. • Embedded movie file sizes - any guides?

I am new to Flash and trying hard to get a .flv movie
embedded in a .swf file. I'm importing an mpeg4 video (a Quicktime
movie about 17 Mb) into flash video encoder and then trying to
encode it into a really small image and file size. This is 'live
action' video, actually short interview clips, lasting about 65
seconds, in a studio, so there's not much change in the image. I'm
aiming for a movie size around 150x100 pixels and as small a file
size as possible. My problem is this: I can't seem to get the file
size much below 1.4 Mb on any setting which keeps the image
reasonably smooth. Even at 150Kbs, 15 frames persecond and a really
small image I still get a .flv around 1.3MB. Can anyone tell me if
this is normal, or should I be able to achieve a much smaller file
size? I need to run this movie from my website and at the moment it
would be way too big! Any thoughts or suggestions would be
    gratefully received...

Any particular reason why you are imbedding the movie rather
    than playing it
as an external FLV? Playing the FLV externally doesn't cost
    anything in
terms of quality and will dramatically reduce the size of
    your SWF.

  • Monster MOV. file size

Used Stream Clip to convert VOB. from a DVD to MOV. so can use in Itunes and Imovie through Quicktime. The VOB. had 3 one gig files and after conversion now have a giant 31 gig MOV. file.
Is this simply the way it is to be or is there anyway to cut the file size in half with little loss of quality.

Used Stream Clip to convert VOB. from a DVD to MOV
That really doesn't tell us much sine the .mov file extension merely means that the video/audio streams contained in the file are in a QuickTime wrapper. A .mov file could be made from any number of codecs.
Also remember that DVD video is highly compressed MPEG-2 so when converting to an editing format (ie; DV/DVCPro) the resulting file size SHOULD BE MUCH LARGER.
You can get up to 2 hours of decent quality video on a 4.3gb DVD disc, but DV/DVCPro requires about 13gb per hour, so you can easily see how highly the DVD video was compressed.

  • MOV file shows no video in latest QT on Windows

What's wrong with a .mov file if I have audio but no video? I'm running QT 7.7.1 on Windows.

Thanks for the reply. Here's exactly what it says:

    16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo,
    48.000 kHz
    Movie FPS: 29.97

    Data Rate: 26.55 mbits/sec

  • Will the latest version of Quicktime Pro(for Vista) create a Lime Lapse from a .Mov file (from a video camera)

Will Quicktime Pro for Windows convert a .MOV file to a time lapse?
I have a six hour tripcoming up next weekend, and want turn a full length bullet cam video(native .MOV) of it into a time lapse to post.  I have found tons of info saying QuicktimePro will go from stills to time lapse, but only one reference to converting an existing 1080P .mov file into one.
Any and all help and or direction  will be greatly appreciated!

QuickTime Player Pro can open image sequences and export to an image sequence. This will create a series of still image files, sequentially named to a folder you create.
Open the video and choose Export from the File menu. In the next dialog window choose "Movie to Image Sequence" and then click the "Options" button. Here you set the "frame per second" and the file format (JPEG, PNG, etc.) and other options (like target file size or compression).
Set the FPS to one and one image file per second of video will be extracted and compressed. If your source was 30 fps then the first frame of the first second of the file will be saved. Set the fps to two and the first and fifteenth frame will be captured.
    Some words of cation:
Be sure to create a new folder prior to the export. You don't want hundreds (or thousands) of image files cluttering your desktop.
Edit the source file prior to export to get a "long" shot of the action. Scene breaks will look awkward when they are played at high speed.
Don't make a 1080 file export to image sequence. If your source is 1080 use the View menu to change it to "Half Size". These half size image files will help keep the file size down and help playback on older machines.
Now that you have your folder of images choose "import Image Sequence" from the file menu and set your fps rate back to the same as your source file.
You'll note that file size of your exported/imported project will probably be larger than your source file (and maybe too big to share on the Web). Export it again "Movie to QuickTime Movie" and choose H.264 video codec and set an "average" data rate. This should crunch the file five times smaller.

  • With iMovie 10 how do I change the movie file size and type.

I have recently upgraded to iMovie 10. It takes some getting used to but I think I will like the new product. After creating my first few movies and trying to upload them to dropbox, it is taking a long time. Comparing the files to ones created in the previous version they are larger, and I need to know how we adjust the file size to the device the movies will be used for. I don't need high resolution files.  It looks like you can change the size in file for share but still a large file and only compatible with Mac and PC others are greyed out. Files are much larger than the files generated in the old version.
Thanks any help will be appreciated.

This is one of the areas where the options have been reduced compared to iMovie 9.  If you share to File, you should have Large (540p) and SD (480p) options in addition to the HD ones.
I'm not sure exactly which menu it is where you are finding greyed-out options.
What is the native format of the movie you are saving?
If you can't share directly into the format you want you should be able to post-process the shared file with a third-party app.
    Geoff.

  • .mov files not showing video while using Quicktime Pro

    Hi:
I'm trying to work with some .mov files that were created in DVCPRO HD format, which I understand is a Panasonic format. I've upgraded to Quicktime Pro 7.6.4 as instructed by the individual who created the .mov files. The problem is I get audio, but no video. I've also tried exporting these movie files to DV Stream and I get an error message that reads "qtKitErrorCatchAll(-8961)."
Thanks for viewing this and for any help you can provide.

The file was made by someone using Final Cut Studio?
A white playback means the codec used in the file is missing on the machine trying to view it.
Ask them to send you a version exported using H.264 video codec.
