Different readings between RivaTuner CPU Temp monitor and Bios Temp monitor

I just installed the RivaTuner temp plugin and it is reporting a core temp of 50C, CPU0 and CPU1 at 65C-66C. If I restart the PC and go to the BIOS the temp is being reported as 43C with a system temp of 42C. At most I would guess that 30 secs have elapsed since I viewed the temp in RivaTuner before checking the BIOS. Is this normal? Why the difference? Are my temps too high?

I will try to monitor the temperature with the chassis open tonight. I feel like there is a lot of blockage in there, but I don't know exactly how to tackle it. The PSU alone has a ton of wires in there and they are criss-crossing everywhere. I tried to zip tie them together as neatly as possible, but there is just a lot of crap in the middle of the case. I also have 3 HDD so that pretty much blocks the entire front fan. I could try using the top and bottom most mounting slots so that there is some air passage between 2 HDDs. The graphics card is also mounted in the top most PCIe slot. I could move that to the bottom one which should provide a better air channel. Other than that there isn't really much more that I can see doing. The case is a Tsunami Dream with the solid side. I could try modifying the side panel so that I can install another case fan. It currently has 2x 120mm fans, one rear and one front. I don't know what the CFMs are on them so I don't know if it is worth swapping them out for more powerful ones. Thanks for your help. I will run some more tests tonight. I did adjust the ratio in the bios so that I could run the RAM at 800mhz and I upped the RAM voltage to the 2.1v that Corsair recommended for it. Could those be affecting the temperature that much? Should I try restoring the RAM settings to factory defaults before trying again? Other than that I have done not other BIOS mods other than what was necessary for RAID.

  • Is there a documented correlation between high CPU/RAM usage and poor system performance?

I realize this subject is not black and white and has quite a bit of depth to it as high usage of either the CPU or RAM does not necessarily mean that a computer is running slowly.
However, is there any documentation, scientific research or academic journal that makes a correlation between poor system performance and the consumption of system resources.
It goes without saying that if you use all your RAM then there won't be any available for additional programs, but can this be substantiated with metrical data?

  • Different tint between Cinema Display/PC montior and TV?

    Hello!
I purchased a Samsung LED TV for monitoring FC Studio trough a AJA Hi5 HDMI miniconverter. I can't afford a Hires SDI HD Pro monitor (3.000 euro or more).
Image on the TV looks bluish than on the Apple Cinema Display or another PC monitor. But the Samsung TV has several image settings, one is called "movie" and it is supposed to be used in a darkened room. Curiously under the "movie" setting, the image looks like the Apple Cinema Display! No bluish.
The other TV settings are "normal", "standard" and "Dinamic" for lit rooms. All look bluish than the PC monitor.
I made an HD video quicktime H264 and send it to a PC. It looks same as the Apple Cinema display. No bluish.
The big question; what color shoud I trust: TV or monitor?
    Thanks!

    www.jdiez.com

The "bluish" tone you're seeing on the consumer monitor is likely due to it being set to a colour temperature up in the 9000Kelvin zone. Its a cheap way to create the impression of a much brighter ("whiter") picture. It starts to compensate for the enormous deficiency that solid-state displays have in generating enough green so that everything doesn't wind up looking magenta.
The reason that the "movie" setting likely looks correct, or at least closer to the Apple Cinema is because they are supplying a contrast/colour temperature setting closer to D65, for a warmer, "filmier" rendition. Its a Kodak thing.
So now that you know that the manufacturers are lying through their teeth to consumers, how confident are you about using a "sweetbox"? Grading is usually about seeing the actual values, rather than a highly pumped-up, compensated version. Maybe you can't afford a calibrated grade monitor -- can you afford to be wrong?

  • Different behavior between Swing in 1.3 and 1.4

I have to overtake an application based on JDK1.3 with a complex swing gui. Several components are self developed, for example buttons , menutems. I dont know the reason. All works (almost )fine in JDK 1.3 but in 1.4 i have a lot of side effects :

    - focus on textfield was lost
I dont think, this is a bug in swing. But i dont see a solution for that. My questions :
    1. Is there related changes in Swing ?
    2. What the best approach to solve this problems ?

  • MBP 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo, CPU temp constant 90 degrees C at high load

I have a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo MBP. Not sure which chipset, but not Santa Rosa. I'm still running 10.5.2 because I don't want to stop the process I'm running at the moment.
Anyhow, I'm running both CPUs at full load, and the program I'm running is very SSE-heavy. iStatPro reads the CPU as running at 90 degrees C with the fans running at about 3800RPM. It's been running like this for several days straight because this is the fastest compute hardware I own. I have three PC case fans pointing at the notebook, so the exterior is relatively cool, as are the other temp readings, but the CPU temp makes me nervous. Various things I've read suggest that about 85C isn't so healthy for the processor. Is that true?
I did try calling Apple Care, but they basically blew me off, suggesting I use external cooling. I could take it to the Genius bar, but that'll be a good 3 hours of my time, so I need to make sure it's worth it.
    Comments?
    Thanks.

See this article regarding runaway applications:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304882
and use that technique to make sure that no other heavy applications are crashing the party. There will be a number of smaller system apps and processes running; you're looking for a big hitter that you did not want.
I hear that the MBP is good for 100°C/ 212°F. I'm a little surprised that you're getting only 3800 rpm at 90°. Fans should be able to turn up to 6000 rpm. You may wish to download smcFanControl.
I use that program to increase the resting rpm from 2000 to about 2500 to give a head-start on any heat issues. At 2500, the fans are not noticeable unless I put my ear an inch from the the computer. The program also has a quick-change setting that lets you quickly bump the fan speed to the max of 6000 if things get too hot too fast.

Built this system last week when i install core center I get no 3.3 v readings. cpu temp plays between 18c to 60c and the fan speed from 800 t0 6000rpm. Check in the bios all voltage readings are fine but cpu temp and fan readins can be way off. Also installed lastest versions of mbm and get the same results. Flashed bios to latest version also. • Hardware Monitor Vs. iStat  CPU Temp Readings

Hello, Can some kind person with Mac expertise ... please tell me why I get two sets of different Temp' readings from Hardware Monitor and iStat ?
For the same CPUs at the same time (generally : CPU B reads 2 Degrees C lower than CPU A)
My CPUs average when my G5 is :
Idle / light work load : 42.2 degrees C with Hardware Monitor
Idle / light work load : 47.2 degrees C with iStat
Working Heavy work load : 58.6 degrees C with Hardware Monitor
Working Heavy work load : 64.0 degrees C with iStat
My Mac interior is kept dust free & the tower is kept covered when shut down, (as its only in use for two hours per evening each day).
Which of the readings may be correct : Hardware Monitor or iStat ?
Is it possible to calibrate Hardware Monitor or iStat ?
Many thanks in advance & a lovely shiny green star awaits ...

Many thanks for your reply & Mac expertise
I always have the Activity Monitor CPU open ..
I am fascinated by the way the CPUs switch on heavy workloads .... when one CPU hits a top temp of 64 degrees C it seems to switch over to the other CPU. when the temp of the first CPU immediately drops it cuts in again !
... I am glad to hear its running rather cool (as its up on its very own desk).
I shall always go by the higher readings then !
    Many thanks again

  • Tm2t cpu temp between 40-65 and fan always on

HI I just got my TM2t XQ330AV - intel core i5 u470 and amd  etc.
Well first of all, the fan is always running even with the option for fan disabled.
I also notice the tempurature of the laptop is pretty warm to touch and where the vent is at, the temp is noticeably warm.
On idle, (im running current ver of core temp) my cpu is around 37-47 degrees with 2-10 percent load.
From the reviews, this laptop was supposed to be cool running.
Also, I have fully charge the laptop overnight and have it unplugged now with the lowest power setting on, brightnss to about less than 50 percent and im already at 65 percent battery after just 1 hour. At this rate, i dont think im going to get to the 5 hour mark others been raving about.
    What do you guys think?

    For example:
I have my macbook on a hard flat surface, and the rear vent is not blocked by anything and is not packed up with dust. My room temp is 68F.
I opened Google Earth and set the globe spinning. I opened iTunes and burned a playlist to a cd. I opened Safari and played a video from Hulu.com. So those three apps and FlashPlayer were all running above 20%CPU for about 10 minutes and the fan ran at 6200rpm but kept the cpu temp below 185F. Once i quit everything except ActivityMonitor all the cpu processes dropped below 5% and it took about 3min for the cpu temp to get down to 130F and the fan idled at 1800rpm.
Im pretty sure this is normal for the macbook. I believe the max operating temp for your intel cpu is somewhere between 212F and 221F .

  • It ALL works (mostly)!!! CPU Temp Monitor??

Just finished assembling my new system and loading it up this weekend, and amazingly, it works. Even with CL3 ram it runs much faster than a P4 1.8A on SiS 645/DDR333 board I had. I am amazed at how big a difference there is in the way XP Pro loads and retrieves data and how smooth it sets up. I did not have to load ANY drivers! A huge step forward from 98SE.
The only issue appears to be that the temperature monitor is out to lunch (So was my last board the SiS645 one, it did the exact same thing) for both CPU and Case. I installed a seperate case system to monitor temp and it gives me 22 deg C after I rearranged the airflow from the fans. I am thinking of drilling out the stock heatsink and inserting one of these temp monitors to real time monitor the CPU.
Has anyone come up with a good way to really monitor CPU temps with this board??

    Hey,
I loaded up MBM (after I figured out what it was and where to find it). It seems pretty good: The case reads 37 deg C (my independent sensor reads 27 deg and bios says 47) and CPU reads 47 deg (bios says 57).
The real questions is : My -12 volts reads -6, and I have played with the settings to find the right sensor, and every sensor I select changes all the voltage readings. Is there a specific selection for readings that sets this up right?
Also, I found a Lian-Li temp sensor with thin tape probes that is designed to be set between CPU/Heatsink to provide real time accurate monitoring for chips (theres two, so I plan on doing CPU and NB), so I will have real data instead of hoping it is right. (19.00 US). Nice little 3.5" or 5.25"  models avail in black, silver or beige.

  • 2 identical machines - different CPU temps

I recently built two XP3200+ identical machines (specs below). All parts were purchased from the same company (NewEgg) and both processors were retail packaged. My concern is the CPU temperature on System 2. Here are the vitals at idle with about 1 hour warmup:
    System 1
    CPU temp: 43 C
CPU Fan Speed: averages 3800 RPM
    System temp: 38 C
    System 2
    CPU temp: 55 C
CPU Fan Speed: averages 4300 RPM
    System temp: 38 C
I know both CPU temps are with allowable limits but why would they be so different?
BTW... I did try removing the heatsink, cleaning it and the CPU, then reapplying Arctic Silver 5 and got no difference in temperature readings. Anyone have any ideas?

And that night i updated corecenter again and my cpu temp. dropped 42C from 52C

  • P6N Sli Platinum front audio panel and CPU temp voltage issues

    Hi All,
I got my P6N Sli Platinum yesterday, build up my computer without any major issues. However I have noticed that my audio front panel does not work. It could not detect my microphone when i plug it into front auido panel, it works fine for the rear auido panel though.
Another issues is I highly doubt the accuracy of CPU temp sensor. Msi 's software monitor reports my CPU temp is around 19-20 degree, I know that's too good to be true even I am using a water cooling system. Btw my cpu is E6600. Anyone else has the similar issues?
The third, I notice my CPU voltage is bouncing between 1.1 to 1.24 in CPU-z. And the multiplier is changing from 6 to 9, frequency is changing from 1.6g to 2.4g. I only see this in CPU-z.  Msi 's own software reports CPU running at 2.4g though. Is this cpuz issue or something else?
Finally, any tips to max the overclock potential of this board? I have overclocked to 3.1g but there are some crashes. Going higher the board just won't boot up. I read a review on anandtech.com says 1.22 bios is good for oc. Where can i download that? I only found 1.1 bios on official site.
    Any reply will be appreciated.
    Cheers

C2D-CPUs have a digital internal sensor to monitor CPU Core temperatures.  Have a look at those with Core Temp ( http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/ ).  This Tool reads the temperature data directly from the register of your CPU. There is nothing wrong with the sensor.  It is rather the MSI tool that does not read the data it provides correctly.

There is no issue.  What CPU-Z allows you to see there is the C1E-feature of your CPU at work.  When there is nothing to do your processor will automatically reduce Core Voltages and frequency to save power and keep temperatures down.  As soon as the work load increases the multiplier is set back to x9 and core voltages increase dynamically.  It is meant to be a good thing.
I have overclocked my system a little and I like that the C1E feature is still working at this speed setting CPU frequency to 2GHz and core voltage to 1.144v when my system is idle.
If you have problems with this feature you can turn it off in BIOS. The option is labeled as "C1E Support" and might be hidden somewhere.  You may be able to hit "F4" to unhide it.
The MSI utilities are not the best tools to monitor your system.  CPU-Z, Core Temp, Everest, Speedfan, Memset, Rightmark Memory Analyzer for example do a far better job.

  • MBP cpu temps and fanspeed help

So I have a MBP intle core i5 2.5GHz with 4 GB of ram, I thinkits either a 2008 model or 2010, I bought it new in 2010.
It has always gotten pretty hot, but thats what MBPs are supposed to do, I get it, but lately I have been testing temps and RPM with istat pro and rmcfancontrol and I think there may be a problem.
my temps all seem fine exceptmy CPU temp, which is regularly above 70 degrees. when doing semi extensive things like watching videos, streaming netflix or menial photoshop tasks, it is generally 80-85, with the fans around 3.5k RPM to 5K RPM. If I plug in my new 21 inch monitor (1920x1028 resolution) and play online poker, watch videos, or any design tasks involving adobe programs, ive seen it jump as high as 94 degrees, and im sure RPM atleast 6k, these may both go even higher as I have not tested the max yet.
this is usually when I have say an online poker lobby with tables going, a tracking software db running, skype on and firefox on. one question I have is, will tthere be less strain on the cpu if I drop the resolution of my new monitor? I dont want to drop it past 1600x1000 (not sure of the exact dimensions) because then it is defeating the purpose of why I bought a new larger screen with a high res.
second, I already run a desk sized fan on my MBP while it sits on an elevated pad (0.25 in approx) with 2 build in fans, left and right. The cpu is located just above the ESC button and that is where the heat is obviously centered so i place my cooling efforts as much as I can on that area.
my next question is, with fancontrol, how high can i force the fans to run and for how long while doing these kind of tasks on dual monitors? Can I set the left side fan to run at 5-6k as a default when playing a session of online poker (this is my part time job so its an important question) while leaving the right fan at 2k? or would it be better to keep them balanced? how long can they run at high rpm before it could cause problems? how long can my mbp run at constant temps of 80-95 degrees before it is dangerous for it? like I said it is mostly common for it to be between 75-85 at most times.
and last but not least, could this be a defect that it runs at such high temps? could it be my fans that are just plugged up and need a cleaning or replacing?
all suggestions are welcome, thank you

Of course. A smaller resolution will require less performance to your dedicated graphic card. Note that your Mac has got two graphic cards (an Intel card and a NVIDIA GeForce one), and your computer switches to the dedicated graphic when it requires more graphic performance.

We don't recommend smcFanControl because your Mac knows what's the correct fan speed and because this application modifies the SMC.
It's not good that your fans run at maximum speed for a long time (5000 rpm is too high). Now, the best you can do is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If you have problems with the fan speed, this should solve the problem.

If the SMC reset doesn't work, I suspect two things: the first, that you have a hardware problem, and the second, that there's a process eating CPU and memory when you are using the computer, because those temperatures are not normal. Also, at that fan speed, they may fail
