Differential backup files--how long should I keep them?

Our SQL server administrator had scheduled SQL diferential backup every night since February 2012. The backup files have been stored in a folder on the server which now has the size over 8 GB. All the differential backup files are in this folder.
I am thinking we only need them for 30 days (with the full backup available). So can I remove the differential backup files manually?  Thanks!

You should not ask this question here how can we tell whether you can remove anything or not. But yes keeping Diff files from 2012 onwards on harddrive is not a good idea. Discuss same with you manager of course you need to to delete and keep files only for
a month.

  • Mavericks is installed and runs well, but how long should I keep the small windows "Optimizing Your Mac" ? It has been now one month!!!

    Small window "Optimizing your Mac" (see below) has been on my Desktop for over a month now.
    How long should I keep it (... without "impacting the performance or the battery life")?

    Closing it when it first appeared wouldn't have stopped the 'optimization' so you could have closed it any time and can do so now - in any case optimization will have long since completed.

  • ISE Backup. How long should be a file?

    Hi:
    I'm doing a backup remotely to and ISE standalone with minimal configuration, just for Guest Wireless Service. It is taking a long time ...
    Usually what size should be a backup file?

    As you are connected to ISE via VPN, so I believe due to slow internet connection which usually happens and VPN always slow down the speed and consumes lot of bandwidth. This might be the reason of taking lots of time to take backup of ISE.
    If you try connecting your PC directly into the same subnet where ISE exist, it will take very less time.
    And moreover file size does not matter, instead of  the medium through which you are connected, that matters.

  • How long should i keep my MBP plugged in?

    On my old laptop, I used to leave it plugged in nonstop. It seems as if, with my MBP, since i leave it plugged in for most of the day, the batterly life isn't that great....? Is this normal? Should I not be plugging in my laptop after it's done charging or overnight? please help, my old computer's battery died and I don't want that to happen my my MBP!
    -O

    Everytime you cycle the battery it looses a tiny bit of ability to charge. But if you don't cycle it, it also loses maximum capacity as well. The good compromise is to leave it plugged in whenever you can and then once a month or so, unplug it, do a total drain till it goes into automatic sleep mode, and leave it unplugged overnight to fully kill it in sleep. Then plug it in the next morning and use till it's up to 100% again. This will prevent use related loss while maintaining the maximum range of charge of the battery.

  • 8gig 3g Restore From Backup. How long should this take?

    It's currently been almost three hours and I'm getting worried. There is no status bar and no cancel option. Can I unplug it?

    Thanks!
    I clicked the X. It told me application couldn't be cancelled. Shut down PC anyway. Disconnected iPod. Apple logo shows up. Battery charger image shows, so I connected it to the mains charger... it sat there, thought about it and told me it was fully charged! Is now sat here quite happily accepting tunes from my iTunes library!
    Thanks ever so much for the help, really appreciate it! Going to work tomorrow will seem more worthwhile having music to listen to!

  • How long should you use the Macbook is the fan is at Max?

    Hey all, the reason i ask is because sometimes when i visit a site with embedded video the CPU rises and heats up so the fan goes up to max. How long should you keep there with out damaging anything? Sometimes the videos are 45 mins, there tv shows and by 5th min is heated up and i dont want to keep it running for the rest of the 45 mins and wreck somthing. Whats the max time for that?

    Not really an answer but I was wondering where your computer is located or how you are using it? My kids were putting a quilted blanket on their lap and then running their notebook on top of the blanket. The blanket had a terrible insulating affect on the computer. And to make matters worse, sometimes the blanket would block the fan exhaust! I had to scold them and teach them to put something else on the blanket over their lap, like a book, and then put the notebook on the book. That really stopped the fan from running a lot.
    It's just something to be aware of. The MB will run cooler if there is space all around it.

    You have limited opportunity to attempt to create a backup of your created files.
    That is what the SafeBoot or safemode appears to allow you -- at the moment.
    Since the hard disk drive exhibits signs of failure or other major issues, plan
    on a replacement in the near future. You may be able to get the computer to
    start up in a regular full OS X (not safe mode) but consider its hours are limited.
    An externally enclosed hard disk drive (with own power supply, not relying on
    Mac ports to run it) is a good basic means of which to use a disk utility to make
    a copy or a Clone of the current OS X. This may help retrieve an archive that
    could be used along with a Time Machine backup, to restore your Mac once you
    get a new hard drive installed inside.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Not much faster than 40 GBs-60GBs per hour. So, minimally, around 12 hours.

  • HT1414 How long should it take to backup an iphone?

    How long should it take to backup an iphone?

    That's not really true. Open apps, except for the one you are actively using, use no power. They are in a suspended state. And killing apps in the Quick Launch screen does not necessarily stop ones with background processes from using power.
    What you should be using the Quick Launch screen for is to switch quickly between applications without having to go back to the Home screen and navigating to the app you want every time.

    How long should it take to restore new 4s iPhone backup from iCloud?

    That depends mostly on your Internet connection download speed, and how much data you have on the phone. It could take anything from a few minutes to several days. There is no "one size fits all" answer.

  • HT1176 how long should an initial backup take?

    How long should an initial backup take?

    If the Mac is connected to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection, the backup will proceed on average at about 30-35 GB per hour.
    So, if you have 100 GB to backup, the process will be approximately 3 hours.
    Bets are off with a backup using wireless, but it will likely be at least 3-4 times longer than the wired Ethernet connection.

  • ID CS2 Windows XP Pro - How long should adding pages take?

    I am using InDesign CS2 in Windows XP Pro. I have an ID book file with 13 sections, approximately 20-25 pages in each section. There are approximately 4,000-5,000 images on the pages (total on all pages). I am using auto page numbering and am trying to add three blank pages to the beginning of the second section. It's been working for about two hours so far to make the change. Is this normal? I'm a Macintosh guy, so I'm not sure how long this process should take on a Windows machine. When I open the task manager, it says that InDesign is using 47-54% CPU (it fluctuates between 47 and 54%). I've quit all other apps (except system-related), even though they weren't using any of the processor, but it hasn't sped things up. In the menu bar at the top of the main ID window, it says "not responding," but I've seen that before and then it's started working again.
    Is this normal? How long should I wait? I know adding an odd number of pages means that items on pages in the sections after the one to which I'm adding pages have to be shifted from right-hand pages to left-hand pages, but should it be taking this long?
    I appreciate any input or suggestions. Thank you.
    Lloyd Lathrop

    Guys,
    Thanks for the replies. I'm actually not sure how these files were set up (before I was here), and I haven't dug into them yet, but I'm trying to fix them (each book file is a 300-page catalog, and we have 10 catalogs...pray for me!). I thought there were 2GB of RAM, so that's one place to start. I'll try to add the pages with all the other sections closed first. I went through each section and they almost all had "sections" beginning on an internal page within the section in addition to the first page of the section. I want "automatic page numbering," so I unchecked "start section" (or whatever it says) on those internal pages.
    I'll requisition more RAM and keep plugging away. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • How long redo logs keep the transactions?

    I learn Oracle and decide to do an experiment. There was a table in the test database. I deleted the file that contained this table via OS. And then I added transactions to this table.
    I did 'insert' several times, then 'commit', then 'alter system switch logfile' several times, 'alter system flush buffer_cache', 'alter system flush shared_pool' and nothing happened. I could add and take data from this table successfully. Alert log showed the error only when I shutdown the database.
    SQL> shutdown immediate
    ORA-01116: error in opening database file 13
    ORA-01110: data file 13: '/oracle/oradata/test5/POSTEMPTEST2.dbf'
    ORA-27041: unable to open file
    Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
    Additional information: 3
    I understand that transactions are put in the redo logs at first, and then are transferred to the datafile on disk. I thought that command 'ALTER SYSTEM CHECKPOINT' writes transactions from redo logs to datafile on disk, but I was wrong. How long redo logs keep transactions? Is there the way to push data from redo logs to datafile?
    I use Oracle 10.2.0.1.0.

    i believe this time you will see the error message during your SQLsWRONG!probably you did not read the complete post of mine before saying WRONG. You tell me, if data file containing a table is deleted at OS level (in *nix), and then you try to insert data in this table and want to retrieve the data from the table (If data is not in db cache or cache has been flushed), from where data will come? Or if you want to insert some data into this table for which new extent are required to be allocated, where it will be allocated? Will your SQLs succeed or will return some error? Either SQL should return you data (which is not possible as data file is no there to fetch the data), or SQL should fail with some error message.
    I mimicked the situation on IBM AIX, following is the outcome.
    Enter user-name: system/salman
    Connected to:
    Oracle Database 11g Release 11.1.0.7.0 - 64bit Production
    SQL> create table test as select * from dba_tables;
    Table created.
    SQL> alter table test move tablespace users;
    Table altered.
    SQL> insert into test select * from dba_tables;
    2500 rows created.
    SQL> /
    2500 rows created.
    SQL> /
    2500 rows created.
    SQL> commit;
    Commit complete.Now i deleted the users01.dbf file at OS level and then execute following INSERT
    SQL> insert into test select * from test;
    insert into test select * from test
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01565: error in identifying file '/oracle/oradata/test/users01.dbf'
    ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
    IBM AIX RISC System/6000 Error: 2: No such file or directory
