Diffferent speeds on two computers

I have two identical laptops albeit with some differences in the software installed. Same antivirus installed on each. One gives 40Mb/s download, the other 15Mb/s. Speed tests using the same cable directly into the router.
Anyone any ideas what this may be please?

are all drivers up to date using the manufacturer's web sites not windows updates

  • Inconsistency in speed between two computers

Well, today we got fios internet installed in our house. While one computer regularly has download speeds of 17mb, the other computer barely goes up to 5 mb. What could be the problem considering that the computers are just 2 meters away from each other?

They both show the same signal, and they are relatively 15 feet from the router.

  • Internet by high-speed DSL cable and two computers sharing the cable

I have a DSL cable going to my computer. It is high speed 100mbps internet. There was a modem supplied but I do not use it. I just stick the cable which comes out of the wall into the computer using the USB ethernet connector.
When I plugged the DSL cable into the modem then connected the modem to my computer, the internet speed was slower (about 30 mbps) so I did not do that.
If I want to use wireless internet though I do have to use the modem.
When the service provider technician came to my home to hook everything up, he said something about purchasing a router from him. He said that way I can have multiple computers using into the internet.
Since I only had the one computer at the time, I did not take him up on his offer.
Now, I want to use two computers––two MacBook Airs––using the cable. I prefer the cable to wireless because it's very fast.
Before I go and buy any equipment, I want to know what I need.
Do I buy just a router and then put the cable that comes out from the wall into a socket and then connect the other two computers to the router, or do I need to get a modem as well?
Just to remind you that when the modem is connected to the computer, the speed drops a lot even though the cable is connected to the modem.
If I need a modem, do I need to buy a special modem or is the one that I have good enough?
Sorry, if this sounds like a basic question but I don't really know much about routers and modems. I surfed the internet a bit on this but I still am not sure what to do.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
As to where that is, it seems to be at
    STATUS > WAN STATUS.

  • Syncing problem between iphone and two computers. Transfer speed issue.

An issue that I've recently started having problems with is syncing my contacts and calendar into two computers and my iphone. I've recently pickup up a new macbook pro to use when out of the office but my mac at work is still my main computer.
The problem is the two computers get equal usage but they also each get their own random entries as well as the iphone which requires me to sync the two to my iphone a few times a week. The computer at work runs the sync fine and is my main computer with the music stored on it. The sync with that one runs in no time as long as their isn't any change with the music. The problem comes about when I try and sync with my laptop. I have the sync music option turned off and I always click merge info for my calendar and contacts (about 2000 entries for contacts). The sync with the laptop can sometimes take over 10 minutes and I can't figure out why as it only shows the sync in progress bar.
It's not like I'm changing much info, it's usually just the calendar so I can't figure out why it takes so long on a much newer computer.
Any info would be greatly welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Robert

One thing that might help out.
Create a new login account on the new computer.
Open address book and enter a test or real contact.
open itunes and go through the initial setup.
Connect the iphone and try syncing just contacts.
    Allow the contacts to merge.
If this takes the same amount of time, then it is a system wide issue and you might need to reset isync.
If the sync only takes a short time like on the work computer, then it might be with the data or a program you have running in your user account when you login.
If you need to reset isync or sync services, here are a few articles that might help out.
One article is for osx 10.4.x and the other is for 10.5.x

Make sure you use the correct article if you decide to reset sync services!!!!
    Hope this helps.

  • How Can I Combine Podcasts from Two Computers Into One ?

I download podcasts on two computers - my home PC and my work/travel laptop. My IPod syncs to my home PC. What I would like to be able to do is transfer all the podcasts I have downloaded from my laptop to my home PC (as my internet speed at home isn't great), then sync it all to my IPod. Is this possible ?

Well it works.....sometimes. It works OK with audio podcasts, but not with *.mov video podcasts. It DOES work with *.M4V video podcasts. I found this out by trying to add all the Tiki Bar TV files, and only the Boomerang episode transferred OK.
The strange thing is this - while the *.MOV vpodcasts don't show up in the Podcast window in ITunes, they DO transfer over and show up in Library>Genre 'Podcasts'>. How can I force them to appear in the Podcasts window ?
    Cheers

  • Sharing Files Amongst Two Computers With DIFFERENT Versions Of Windows (XP & Vista)

I just bought a WRT54G4 Wireless-G broadbad router & am a n00bie to this whole networking thng.  As things stand now, I have got everything whereas both my desktop PC (Windows XP Home Edition) & my wireless laptop PC (Windows Vista Home Premium) are online (Both local & Internet) HOWEVER I cannot seem to get things whereas my desktop PC shares files which can then be viewed & otherwise accessed by the laptop.
Here's what I'm trying to do....
    * Have BOTH computers access the Internet via private network (This I have already managed to do)
    * Have the desktop share files which can be accessed (Wirelessly or not) by my laptop
Essentially, I want to be able to make use of BOTH HDs as needed.
My desktop is an old AMD Duron 1 Ghz. computer with 512MB of RAM & can handle SOME small tasks however the big gun is my laptop (A 1.86 Ghz. Intel Pentium with 3 GB of RAM). Because of it's speed & memory, I'd like to have the laptop handle the larger & more intensive tasks.
Although my laptop has a smaller HD compared my desktop (A 136 GB HD in the desktop (Out of 200 GB) compared to a 141 GB (I'm guessing this HD is around that size but since it came pre-installed & I'm currently leasing-to-own, I don't know), I'd like to be able to make use of BOTH HDs if at all possible.  All I need is for the two computers to see the two HDs & all the files on it.
I have tried the setting up of file sharing as instructed elsewhere on the Linksys site, but lost it when I restarted both of my computers since that's what the page told me to do (I followed the Windows XP as the desktop has all the files I want to be shared & Windows XP is the OS of the desktop).  Should I have not done this?
Also, my ultimate goal is to GET RID of the big bulky monitor which I have plugged into the back end of my desktop PC & just simply use the laptop instead since it doesn't take up so much room on the desk.  Is there a software-based "Virtual Monitor" or monitor emulator of some kind which I can download (FREE please ) that will allow me to see the desktops of all the computers on my network just as if I
had REAL monitors?  If so, where might I find one?
In short, whle I have accomplished a great deal in these last few days since I bought the router & linked the two computers together, as you can see, I still need some help & I've got some learning to do.
Any help I can get wouldbe MOST appreciated.
    Cheers

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

File & Printer Sharing IS enabled on the desktop (Which has all the files I wish to share) HOWEVER.....
    Ricewind wrote:
Make sure File and Printer Sharing is Enabled...
Also make sure both the computer's are in the same workgroup...
The default workgroup name in Windows Vista has been changed to WORKGROUP. In WindowsXP, the default workgroup name is MSHOME...
Also go into the computer software firewall on each computer, and set it to "trust" the other computers on your network.
If your firewall or PC security program keeps a list of trusted applications (also known as a "trusted zone"), then make sure that your router is in the trusted zone on your firewall...
As indicated before, both computers have DIFFERENT operating systems.  The laptop has Windows Vista HP installed while the desktop has Windows XP HE installed.  As such, are you suggesting that I stick with the default workgroup names just to keep things simple?
As for the firewall & other security software, I have Windows Defender plus SpyBot (Desktop only), ThreatFire & AdAware (The latter I rarely use since ThreatFire fills this need rather nicely).  Would I have to go into Defender on both computers & tell it to trust the other computer?  Network Magic already does this with both computers (Yes, I have Network Magic installed on both computers).

  • I'd like to edit my site from iWeb on two computers, is this possible?

I'd like to edit my site from iWeb on two computers, is this possible?
I started creating my site on a PB 15", but when I'm home I like the speed of my iMac and I'd like to continue the editing process on my iMac but I can't find the files that iWeb saves.
I'd ideally like to save my site on my 30gig iPod using it as a hard drive between both. I would love for this to happen but I can't find the files saved by iWeb. Is this even possible?
I've even tried linking my PB to my iMac via firewire as a hard drive. No Luck.
    Please Help . . .

    PB G4 15" 167GHz 80HD, iMac G5 2Ghz, 160HD   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I think iWeb only recognizes the 'domain.sites' file so while you can set up more than one site, they are in the same project.
Of course, the workround is to move the domain.sites file out of the default location, which them makes iWeb create a new one. You can then work on any number of projects, only moving the correct file into the default location for work on each one. Not elegant by any means, but until someone suggests a better way (or Apple produce a more flexible version of the software) it works fine that way.

  • Linking two computers

so i've got one computer at 10.3.9 that's been our workhorse. we're purchasing another computer that has 10.4 on it. they'll both have final cut pro and be able to do stuff. like make dvd's, export videos, etc... how do i go about linking the two computers together? or is it possible? i'd also like a fast solution since i'd be working with large file sizes (in the gigabytes.)

Not quite clear what your needs are, to do a one-time migration of files so you can retire the old computer, or to use both computers and continually share files so you can work on projects with either one. Some good suggestions for both situations already posted here, so you may want to implement both techniques to perform an initial migration using FW target disc mode or physical media for large files then use network file sharing through a high-speed wireless or wired router to access smaller files on a daily basis. Using Chicken of the VNC you can even use one Mac as a console to perform work on the other Mac, with a slight network lag in the display.
One thing to consider in sharing work between a 10.3 and 10.4 machine: you might find slight differences in the apps versions and their data files, you might consider upgrading the older machine to 10.4 or at least make sure you use the same version apps on both machines so the project files will be truly interchangeable.

  • Usb connection printer, router, two computers on LAN?

I recently got a TP-Link WDR4300 (N750) router with two usb jacks. I have a HP OfficeJet 5610 printer's usb output plugged into the router usb jack. On the network I have an Imac 10.4.11 and a Macbook 10.5.xx. The Imac recognizes the printer and will print. However, the Macbook sees the printer, but will not print. Both computers are plugged into the router by ethernet cables.
There are many posts regarding setting up printers with macs in various configurations. But I have not seen any where there are two computers on the LAN and one computer will print and the other does not.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    You could try [iStat Menus|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25230/istat-menus].
I use this to monitor temps, fan speed, disk usage, read/write speed, CPU usage and of course, network throughput.
    Hope this helps...

  • Using FCPX on two computers

I have an iMac 27" that's a few years old running 10.6.8-- just before Thunderbolt came out unfortunately-- and also a MacBookPro (which does have Thunderbolt).  While I do most of my editing on the iMac, I might need to use the MBP to tweak things for clients while I'm away from the studio.  I am mostly a stills shooter, and I'm still learning the vagaries of video editing.  Just took a nice little course in FCP10, had previously been using FCX (X as in "Express") and Premier.  I just purchased FCP10 toady.
I am hoping that as with FCX, I will be able to use FCP10 on both computers without buying two versions.  That was allowable as long as it was not being used on two computers at the same time.  Can someone please confirm that this is the case?
Also, I am planning on using a 128GB USB thumb drive to carry the work between the two computers for a project I am currently working on.  It's USB 2.0, and I know that's not optimal as far as speed is concerned, but since all of the final videos I'll be creating for the project are under four minutes, I'm hoping that won't be a horrible problem, just a mildly frustrating one.
At the class I took, we grabbed a disk image off of the network drive to use on the local computer, then put it back at the end of the class.  Will something like that work with the USB dongle between the iMac and MBP?  Many thanks for all info.  -JB

You can use Final Cut Pro X on two computers, all you have to do is on the second computer, login to the Mac App store with the account you purchased the first one.
I'm on 10.6.8 and I recently moved from FCEx to FCPX (I prefer these abbreviations), and had to learn everything all over again, FCPX is nothing at all like any previous version of FCP, so you will have a learning curve, but having said that, FCPX is far better than FCEx.
Moving the folders from the flash drive to the computer each time would work. The general consensus is to have your Event and Project folders on a fast external drive, just so you can move it to any computer you wish, no need to copy folders back and forth from internal and external drives, FCPX recognizes those folders on any drive automatically, just be sure to back up the external drive. BTW, you must create Event and Project folders and move them from one drive to another within FCPX (which you might already know).
The USB 2.0 flash drive is excrutiatingly slow. I'd buy a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter for the MacBook Pro, then use an external Firewire drive to move between the two computers.

  • Two computers, two modems?

    Hi,
A short time ago, I finally got high speed internet (DSL) for my iMac G3 (400 MHz). I was prompted to do this because my modem was a dud and dial-up became impossible for me. Now I have an external modem and after ironing out a few wrinkles with my ISP, everything is good. However, a housemate has a PC that is not connected to this great system. Can anyone tell me how to get the second computer connected? Is it possible to have both a mac and a pc connected to the same modem? Are there ethernet cable splitters that will do this job? Or do I need to get a whole second modem and if so, can the two computers be online at the same time?
Sorry if this is basic; I am still learning.
    Thank you in advance.

Buy an inexpensive wired router. The router will use the single IP address given to you by your ISP and create multiple local IP addresses. It will support both the Mac and PC.

  • Can two computers use the same backup??

I restored a seperate Macbook pro from the Time machine backup of MY Macbook. So I have two computers operating from the same backup. Is that recommended??

Yes, it should do. Once you change the name of the computer make sure you reset TM
    See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
When you start the backup it will create a new sparsebundle.. (like a virtual disk that holds the backup on network drives) and you will be able to check that it is correct because it should be a new full backup.
Then you can do a full backup of one of the machines.. the other machine can continue to use the original backup.

  • Can I have the same library on two computers?

I would like to run iTunes off two computers..work and home with my same library. Can I? How?
    Thank you much

I have seen the same info in a few different threads, but I'm still confused. My daughter has ITunes on an older computer, and wants to back up all the info for a new computer. I have ITunes on my computer, and tried to save her files on a flash drive (1 GB) and here's what happened: When I save either or both the .xml or .itl files, and tried to import them to my itunes, I got folders but no songs. When I saved the ITunes Music folder, that gave me the songs, but its more than 1 GB, so I guess I need more flash drives. [However, I was able to import a song that had been downloaded from a CD onto my daughter's computer while the drive was in place on my computer, but when the drive was gone, so was the song......is that always the case?] Do I need to copy the entire ITunes folder (including the .xml, .itl and Music) to the flash drive, and then copy that to the hard drive on the new computer? Help!

  • Computer with CS6 Died on one of two computers. I need to install and activate CS6 Web Premium on another computer. How can I activate it on new computer?

I have Adobe Creative Suite CS6 installed on two computers. One of the two computers experienced a catastrophic failure. The hard drive is damaged and the computer will not boot. So now I only have access to CS6 on one computer.  I would like to install CS6 on a new computer so that I have two working computers each with an installation of CS6. How do I do this and activate both installations? I tried calling Adobe but the only number I have to troubleshoot problems is for Creative Cloud problems only. Any way to contact a live person at Adobe would be appreciated. Any other solutions would also be appreciated..
    Thank you.
